Let $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a non-degenerate linear recurrence sequence with order at least two defined over a function field and $\mathcal{O}_S^*$ be the set of $S$-units. In this paper, we use a result of Brownawell and Masser to prove effective results related to the Diophantine equations concerning linear recurrence sequences and $S$-units. In particular, we provide a finiteness result for the solutions of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_1} + \cdots + U_{n_r} \in \mathcal{O}_S^*$ in nonnegative integers $n_1, \ldots, n_r$. Furthermore, we study the finiteness result of the Diophantine equation $U_n+V_m+W_\ell = 0$ in $(n, m, \ell)\in \N^3$, where $U_n,V_m,W_\ell$ are simple linear recurrence sequences in the function field.
For an arbitrary homogeneous linear recurrence sequence of order d with constant coefficients, we derive recurrence relations for all subsequences with indices in arithmetic progression. The coefficients of these recurrences are given explicitly in terms of partial Bell polynomials that depend on at most d-1 terms of the generalized Lucas sequence associated with the given recurrence. We also provide an elegant formula for the partial sums of such sequences and illustrate all of our results with examples of various orders, including common generalizations of the Fibonacci numbers.
In this paper we give an improvement of the degree of the homogeneous linear recurrence with integer coefficients that exponential sums of symmetric Boolean functions satisfy. This improvement is tight. We also compute the asymptotic behavior of symmetric Boolean functions and provide a formula that allows us to determine if a symmetric boolean function is asymptotically not balanced. In particular, when the degree of the symmetric function is a power of two, then the exponential sum is much smaller than $2^n$.
Let $\{u_{n}\}_{n \geq 0}$ be a non-degenerate binary recurrence sequence with positive, square-free discriminant and $p$ be a fixed prime number. In this paper, we have shown the finiteness result for the solutions of the Diophantine equation $u_{n_{1}} + u_{n_{2}} + \cdots + u_{n_{t}} = p^{z}$ with some conditions on $n_i $ for all $1\leq i \leq t$. Moreover, we explicitly find all the powers of three which are sums of three balancing numbers using the lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms. Further, we use a variant of Baker-Davenport reduction method in Diophantine approximation due t…
Let $S := \{p_1,\ldots ,p_{\ell}\}$ be a finite set of primes and denote by $\mathcal{U}_S$ the set of all rational integers whose prime factors are all in $S$. Let $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a non-degenerate linear recurrence sequence with order at least two. In this paper, we provide a finiteness result for the solutions of the Diophantine equation $aU_n + bU_m = z_1 +\cdots +z_r,$ where $n\geq m$ and $z_1, \ldots, z_r\in \mathcal{U}_S$.
We give a simplified presentation of some results about recurrences of certain sequences of binomial sums in terms of (generalized) Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials.
Due to some results by John P. D Angelo and Dusty Grundmeier about CR- mappings the main results of my 2001 paper about recurrences for some sequences of binomial sums can be simplified.
Let $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a fixed linear recurrence sequence of integers with order at least two, and for any positive integer $\ell$, let $\ell \cdot 2^{\ell} + 1$ be a Cullen number. Recently in \cite{bmt}, generalized Cullen numbers in terms of linear recurrence sequence $(U_n)_{n\geq 0}$ under certain weak assumptions has been studied. However, there is an error in their proof. In this paper, we generalize their work, as well as our result fixes their error. In particular, for a given polynomial $Q(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ we consider the Diophantine equation $U_{n_1} + \cdots + U_{n_k} = \ell…
There is a growing literature on sums of reciprocals of polynomial functions of recurrence relations with constant coefficients and fixed depth, such as Fibonacci and Tribonacci numbers, products of such numbers, and balancing numbers (numbers $n$ such that the sum of the integers less than $n$ equals the sum of the $r$ integers immediately after, for some $r$ which is called the balancer of $n$; If $n$ is included in the summation, we have the cobalancing numbers, and $r$ is called the cobalancer of $n$). We generalize previous work to reciprocal sums of depth two recurrence sequences with ar…
Let $\{ {U_{n}\}_{n \geq 0} }$ be a non-degenerate binary recurrence sequence with positive discriminant. Let $\{p_1,\ldots, p_s\}$ be fixed prime numbers and $\{b_1,\ldots ,b_s\}$ be fixed non-negative integers. In this paper, we obtain the finiteness result for the solution of the Diophantine equation $U_{n_{1}} + \cdots + U_{n_{t}} = b_1 p_1^{z_1} + \cdots+ b_s p_s^{z_s} $ under certain assumptions. Moreover, we explicitly solve the equation $F_{n_1}+ F_{n_2}= 2^{z_1} +3^{z_2}$, in non-negative integers $n_1, n_2, z_1, z_2$ with $z_2\geq z_1$. The main tools used in this work are the lower …
Let $S= \{ p_1, \ldots, p_s\}$ be a finite, non-empty set of distinct prime numbers and $(U_{n})_{n \geq 0}$ be a linear recurrence sequence of integers of order $r$. For any positive integer $k,$ we define $(U_j^{(k)})_{j\geq 1}$ an increasing sequence composed of integers of the form $U_{n_k} +\cdots + U_{n_1}, \ n_k>\cdots >n_1$. Under certain assumptions, we prove that for any $ε>0,$ there exists an integer $n_{0}$ such that $[U_j^{(k)}]_S < \left(U_j^{(k)}\right)^ε,$ for $ j > n_0,$ where $[m]_S$ denote the $S$-part of the positive integer $m$. On further assumptions on $(U_{n})_{n \geq 0…
A linear recurrence sequence in a cyclotomic field produces a sequence of the generating fields of each term. We show that the later sequence is periodic after removing the first finite terms, and give a bound of its period. This can be applied to exponential sums.
The main objective of this article is to study the exponential sums associated to Fourier coefficients of modular forms supported at numbers having a fixed set of prime factors. This is achieved by establishing an improvement on Shparlinski's bound for exponential sums attached to certain recurrence sequences over finite fields.
The balancing numbers $B_n$ ($n=0,1,\cdots$) are solutions of the binary recurrence $B_n=6B_{n-1}-B_{n-2}$ ($n\ge 2$) with $B_0=0$ and $B_1=1$. In this paper we show several relations about the sums of product of two balancing numbers of the type $\sum_{m=0}^n B_{k m+r}B_{k(n-m)+r}$ ($k>r\ge 0$) and the alternating sum of reciprocal of balancing numbers $\left\lfloor\left(\sum_{k=n}^\infty\frac{1}{B_{l k}}\right)^{-1}\right\rfloor$. Similar results are also obtained for Lucas-balancing numbers $C_n$ ($n=0,1,\cdots$), satisfying the binary recurrence $C_n=6C_{n-1}-C_{n-2}$ ($n\ge 2$) with $C_0=…
The paper studies algebraic independence of certain reciprocal sums of Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Also more general binary recurrences are considered. The main tool is Mahler's method reducing the investigation of the algebraic independence of function values to the one of functions if these satisfy certain types of functional equations.
The degree sequence of the algebraic numbers in an algebraic linear recurrence sequence is shown to be virtually periodic. This is proved using the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem. It has applications to the degree sequence and the minimal polynomial sequence for exponential sums over finite fields. The degree periodicity also holds for some more complicated non-linear recurrence sequences. We give one example from the iterations of a polynomial map. This depending on the dynamic Mordell-Lang conjecture which has been proved in some cases.
We derive weighted summation identities involving the second order recurrence sequence $\{w_n\} =\{ w_n(a,b; p, q)\}$ defined by $w_0 = a,\,w_1 = b;\,w_n = pw_{n - 1} - qw_{n - 2}\, (n \ge 2)$, where $a$, $b$, $p$ and $q$ are arbitrary complex numbers, with $p\ne 0$ and $q\ne 0$.
We have gone back to old methods found in the historical part of Hardy's Divergent Series well before the invention of the modern analytic continuation to use formal manipulation of harmonic sums which produce some interesting formulae. These are linear recurrence relations for $\displaystyle{ \sum_{n=1}^\infty H_n n^k}$ which in turn yield linear recurrence relations for $ζ'(-k)$ and hence using the functional equation to a linear recurrence relation for $ζ'(2k)$ and $ζ(2k+1)$. Questions of rigor have been postponed to a subsequent preprint.
Usually creative telescoping is used to derive recurrences for sums. In this article we show that the non-existence of a creative telescoping solution, and more generally, of a parameterized telescoping solution, proves algebraic independence of certain types of sums. Combining this fact with summation-theory shows transcendence of whole classes of sums. Moreover, this result throws new light on the question why, e.g., Zeilberger's algorithm fails to find a recurrence with minimal order.
Ramanujan gave a recurrence relation for the partition function in terms of the sum of the divisor function $σ(n)$. In 1885, J.W. Glaisher considered seven divisor sums closely related to the sum of the divisors function. We develop a calculus to associate a generating function with each of these divisor sums. This yields analogues of Ramanujan's recurrence relation for several partition-theoretic functions as well as $r_k(n)$ and $t_k(n)$, functions counting the number of ways of writing a number as a sum of squares (respectively, triangular) numbers. As by-products of this association, we ob…
We study higher-dimensional interlacing Fibonacci sequences, generated via both Chebyshev type functions and $m$-dimensional recurrence relations. For each integer $m$, there exist both rational and integer versions of these sequences, where the underlying prime congruence structures of the rational sequence denominators enables the integer sequence to be recovered. From either the rational or the integer sequences we construct sequences of vectors in $\mathbb{Q}^m$, which converge to irrational algebraic points in $\mathbb{R}^m$. The rational sequence terms can be expressed as simple recurren…
For integer $k \geq 0$, let $S_k$ denote the sum of the $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^k + 2^k + \cdots + n^k$. For any given $k$, the power sum $S_k$ can in principle be determined by differentiating $k$ times (with respect to $x$) the associated exponential generating function $\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}S_k x^k/k!$, and then taking the limit of the resulting differentiated function as $x$ approaches $0$. In this paper, we exploit this method to establish a couple of seemingly novel recurrence relations, one of them involving the even-indexed power sums $S_2, S_4,\ldots, S_{2k}$,…
Let $(F_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be the Fibonacci sequence given by the recurrence $F_{n+2}=F_{n+1}+F_n$, for $n\geq 0$, where $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. There are several generalizations of this sequence and also several interesting identities. In this paper, we investigate a homogeneous recurrence relation that, in a way, extends the linear recurrence of the Fibonacci sequence for two variables, called {\it double-recurrence Fibonacci numbers}, given by ${F(m,n) = F(m-1, n-1)+F (m-2, n-2)}$, for $n,m\geq 2$, where $F (m, 0) = F_m$, $F (m, 1) = F_{m+1}$, $F (0, n) = F_n$ and $F (1, n) = F_{n+1}$. We exhibit a…
In this paper we present a simple method for deriving recurrence relations and we apply it to obtain two equations involving the Lerch Phi function and sums of Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. Connections between these results and those obtained in a paper of H.M. Srivastava, M.L. Glasser and V. Adamchik are pointed out, emphasizing the usefulness of this approach with some meaningful examples.
Starting from a classical generating series for Bessel functions due to Schlomilch, we use Dwork's relative dual theory to broadly generalize unit-root results of Dwork on Kloosterman sums and Sperber on hyperkloosterman sums. In particular, we express the (unique) p-adic unit root of an arbitrary exponential sum on the torus in terms of special values of the p-adic analytic continuation of a ratio of A-hypergeometric functions. In contrast with the earlier works, we use noncohomological methods and obtain results that are valid for arbitrary exponential sums without any hypothesis of nondegen…
We evaluate the nested sum $\sum_{a_{n - 1} = c}^{a_n } {\sum_{a_{n - 2} = c}^{a_{n - 1} } { \cdots \sum_{a_0 = c}^{a_1 } {x^{a_0 } } } }$ where $a_n$ and $c$ are any integers and $x$ is a real or complex variable. Consequently, we evaluate multiple sums involving the terms of a general second order sequence, the Horadam sequence $(W_j(a,b;p,q))$, defined for all non-negative integers $j$ by the recurrence relation $W_0 = a,\,W_1 = b;\,W_j = pW_{j - 1} - qW_{j - 2}\, (j \ge 2)$; where $a$, $b$, $p$ and $q$ are arbitrary complex numbers, with $p\ne 0$, $q\ne 0$.
We introduce new analogues of the Ramanujan sums, denoted by $\widetilde{c}_q(n)$, associated with unitary divisors, and obtain results concerning the expansions of arithmetic functions of several variables with respect to the sums $\widetilde{c}_q(n)$. We apply these results to certain functions associated with $σ^*(n)$ and $ϕ^*(n)$, representing the unitary sigma function and unitary phi function, respectively.
Let R be the ring of S-integers of an algebraic function field (in one variable) over a perfect field, where S is finite and not empty. It is shown that for every positive integer N there exist elements of R that can not be written as a sum of at most N units.
Recently, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the index 2 and 4 cases have been given in several papers (see [2,3,7,8]). In the course of evaluation, the sigh (or unit root) ambiguities are unavoidably occurred. This paper presents another method, different from [7] and [8], to determine the sigh (unit root) ambiguities of Gauss sums in the index 2 case, as well as the ones with odd order in the non-cyclic index 4 case. And we note that the method in this paper are more succinct and effective than [8] and [7].
For a given positive integers $m$ and $\ell$, we give a complete list of positive integers $n$ for which their exist $m$th roots of unity $x_1,\dots,x_n \in \mathbb{C}$ such that $x_1^{\ell} + \cdots + x_n^{\ell}=0$. This extends the earlier result of Lam and Leung on vanishing sums of roots of unity. Furthermore, we prove that for which integers $n$ with $2 \leq n \leq m$, there are distinct $m$th roots of unity $x_1,\dots,x_n \in \mathbb{C}$ such that $x_1^{\ell} + \cdots + x_n^{\ell}=0$.
We introduce a symbolic representation of $r$-fold harmonic sums at negative indices. This representation allows us to recover and extend some recent results by Duchamp et al., such as recurrence relations and generating functions for these sums. This approach is also applied to the study of the family of extended Bernoulli polynomials, which appear in the computation of harmonic sums at negative indices. It also allows us to reinterpret the Raabe analytic continuation of the multiple zeta function as both a constant term extension of Faulhaber's formula, and as the result of a natural renorma…
In this paper we consider combinatorial numbers $C_{m, k}$ for $m\ge 1$ and $k\ge 0$ which unifies the entries of the Catalan triangles $ B_{n, k}$ and $ A_{n, k}$ for appropriate values of parameters $m$ and $k$, i.e., $B_{n, k}=C_{2n,n-k}$ and $A_{n, k}=C_{2n+1,n+1-k}$. In fact, some of these numbers are the well-known Catalan numbers $C_n$ that is $C_{2n,n-1}=C_{2n+1,n}=C_n$. We present new identities for recurrence relations, linear sums and alternating sum of $C_{m,k}$. After that, we check sums (and alternating sums) of squares and cubes of $C_{m,k}$ and, consequently, for $ B_{n, k}$ an…
The L-function of symmetric powers of classical Kloosterman sums is a polynomial whose degree is now known, as well as the complex absolute values of the roots. In this paper, we provide estimates for the p-adic absolute values of these roots. Our method is indirect. We first develop a Dwork-type p-adic cohomology theory for the two-variable infinite symmetric power L-function associated to the Kloosterman family, and then study p-adic estimates of the eigenvalues of Frobenius. A continuity argument then provides the desired p-adic estimates.
Let $n\ge 1, e\ge 1, k\ge 2$ and $c$ be integers. An integer $u$ is called a unit in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ of residue classes modulo $n$ if $\gcd(u, n)=1$. A unit $u$ is called an exceptional unit in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ if $\gcd(1-u,n)=1$. We denote by $\mathcal{N}_{k,c,e}(n)$ the number of solutions $(x_1,...,x_k)$ of the congruence $x_1^e+...+x_k^e\equiv c \pmod n$ with all $x_i$ being exceptional units in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In 2017, Mollahajiaghaei presented a formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,...,x_k)$ of the congruence $x_1^2+...+x_k^2\equiv c\pmod n$ with all $x_i$ be…
In 2007, Jarden and Narkiewicz raised the following question: Is it true that each algebraic number field has a finite extension L such that the ring of integers of L is generated by its units (as a ring)? In this article, we answer the analogous question in the function field case. More precisely, it is shown that for every finite non-empty set S of places of an algebraic function field F | K over a perfect field K, there exists a finite extension F' | F, such that the integral closure of the ring of S-integers of F in F' is generated by its units (as a ring).
In this paper, we develop a new method for finding all perfect powers which can be expressed as the sum of two rational S-units, where S is a finite set of primes. Our approach is based upon the modularity of Galois representations and, for the most part, does not require lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms. Its main virtue is that it enables to carry out such a program explicitly, at least for certain small sets of primes S; we do so for S = {2, 3} and S = {3, 5, 7}.
We prove new upper bounds on the number of representations of rational numbers $\frac{m}{n}$ as a sum of $4$ unit fractions, giving five different regions, depending on the size of $m$ in terms of $n$. In particular, we improve the most relevant cases, when $m$ is small, and when $m$ is close to $n$. The improvements stem from not only studying complete parametrizations of the set of solutions, but simplifying this set appropriately. Certain subsets of all parameters define the set of all solutions, up to applications of divisor functions, which has little impact on the upper bound of the numb…
We consider relations between the pairs of sequences, $(f, g_f)$, generated by the Lambert series expansions, $L_f(q) = \sum_{n \geq 1} f(n) q^n / (1-q^n)$, in $q$. In particular, we prove new forms of recurrence relations and matrix equations defining these sequences for all $n \in \mathbb{Z}^{+}$. The key ingredient to the proof of these results is given by the statement of Euler's pentagonal number theorem expanding the series for the infinite $q$-Pochhammer product, $(q; q)_{\infty}$, and for the first $n$ terms of the partial products, $(q; q)_n$, forming the denominators of the rational …
Translation from the Latin of Euler's "Observatio de summis divisorum" (1752). E243 in the Enestroem index. The pentagonal number theorem is that $\prod_{n=1}^\infty (1-x^n)=\sum_{n=-\infty}^\infty (-1)^n x^{n(3n-1)/2}$. This paper assumes the pentagonal number theorem and uses it to prove a recurrence relation for the sum of divisors function. The term "pentagonal numbers" comes from polygonal numbers. Euler takes the logarithmic derivative of both sides. Then after multiplying both sides by $-x$, the left side is equal to $\sum_{n=1}^\infty σ(n) x^n$, where $σ(n)$ is the sum of the divisors …
In an earlier work, the authors have determined all possible weights $n$ for which there exists a vanishing sum $ζ_1+\cdots +ζ_n=0$ of $m$th roots of unity $ζ_i$ in characteristic 0. In this paper, the same problem is studied in finite fields of characteristic $p$. For given $m$ and $p$, results are obtained on integers $n_0$ such that all integers $n\geq n_0$ are in the ``weight set'' $W_p(m)$. The main result $(1.3)$ in this paper guarantees, under suitable conditions, the existence of solutions of $x_1^d+\cdots+x_n^d=0$ with all coordinates not equal to zero over a finite field.
We prove that for a positive integer a the integer sequence P(n) satisfying for all n, -infty<n<infty, the recurrence P(n)=a+P(n-phi(a)), phi(a) the Euler function, generates in increasing order all integers P(n) coprime to a.The finite Fourier expansion of P(n) is given in terms of a, n, and the phi(a)-th roots of unity. Properties of the sequence are derived.
