In this short survey paper, we first recall the log gradient estimates for the heat equation on manifolds by Li-Yau, R. Hamilton and later by Perelman in conjunction with the Ricci flow. Then we will discuss some of their applications and extensions focusing on sharp constants and improved curvature conditions.
In this paper we give Hamilton's Laplacian estimates for the heat equation on complete noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. As an application, combining Li-Yau's lower and upper bounds of the heat kernel, we give an estimate on Laplacian form of the heat kernel on complete manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature that is sharp in the order of time parameter for the heat kernel on the Euclidean space.
In the first part of this paper, we get new Li-Yau type gradient estimates for positive solutions of heat equation on Riemmannian manifolds with $Ricci(M)\ge -k$, $k\in \mathbb R$. As applications, several parabolic Harnack inequalities are obtained and they lead to new estimates on heat kernels of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below. In the second part, we establish a Perelman type Li-Yau-Hamilton differential Harnack inequality for heat kernels on manifolds with $Ricci(M)\ge -k$, which generalizes a result of L. Ni \cite{NL1,NL4}. As applications, we obtain new Harnack inequali…
The heat flow for Dirac-harmonic maps on Riemannian spin manifolds is a modification of the classical heat flow for harmonic maps by coupling it to a spinor. It was introduced by Chen, Jost, Sun, and Zhu as a tool to get a general existence program for Dirac-harmonic maps. For source manifolds with boundary they obtained short time existence and the existence of a global weak solution was established by Jost, Liu, and Zhu. We prove short time existence of the heat flow for Dirac-harmonic maps on closed manifolds.
We prove some uniqueness result for solutions to the heat equation on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we prove the uniqueness of $L^p$ solutions with $0< p< 1$, and improves the $L^1$ uniqueness result of P. Li by weakening the curvature assumption.
In this paper, we study the gradient estimates of Li-Yau-Hamilton type for positive solutions to both drifting heat equation and the simple nonlinear heat equation problem $$ u_t-Δu=au\log u, \ \ u>0 $$ on the compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n$ and with non-negative (Bakry-Emery)-Ricci curvature. Here $a\leq 0$ is a constant. The latter heat equation is a basic evolution equation which is the negative gradient heat flow to the functional of Log-Sobolev inequality on the Riemannian manifold. We derive various versions of gradient estimates which generalize Hamilton's gradient …
In this paper we introduce a new logarithmic entropy functional for the linear heat equation on complete Riemannian manifolds and prove that it is monotone decreasing on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Our results are simpler version, without Ricci flow, of R.-G. Ye's recent result (arXiv:0708.2008v3). As an application, we apply the monotonicity of the logarithmic entropy functional of heat kernels to characterize Euclidean space.
The main goal of this paper is to generalize some Li-Yau type gradient estimates to Finsler geometry in order to derive Harnack type inequalities. Moreover, we obtain, under some curvature assumption, a general gradient estimate for positive solutions of the heat equation when the manifold evolving along the Finsler Ricci flow.
This article shows that under locally uniformly integral bounds of the negative part of Ricci curvature the heat kernel admits a Gaussian upper bound for small times. This provides general assumptions on the geometry of a manifold such that certain function spaces are in the Kato class. Additionally, the results imply bounds on the first Betti number.
We study entire solutions of the biharmonic heat equation on complete Riemannian manifolds without boundary. We provide exponential decay estimates for the biharmonic heat kernel under assumptions on the lower bound of Ricci curvature and noncollapsing of unit balls. And we prove a uniqueness criteria for the Cauchy problem. As corollaries we prove the conservation law for the biharmonic heat kernel and a uniform L-infinite estimate for entire solutions starting with bounded initial data.
Using an approach based on the heat kernel we prove an Atiyah-Bott-Lefschetz theorem for the $L^2-$Lefschetz numbers associated to an elliptic complex of cone differential operators over a compact manifold with conical singularities. We then apply our results to the case of the de Rham complex.
In this paper, we study the gradient estimate for positive solutions to the following nonlinear heat equation problem $$ u_t-Δu=au\log u+Vu, \ \ u>0 $$ on the compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n$ and with non-negative Ricci curvature. Here $a\leq 0$ is a constant, $V$ is a smooth function on $M$ with $-ΔV\leq A$ for some positive constant $A$. This heat equation is a basic evolution equation and it can be considered as the negative gradient heat flow to $W$-functional (introduced by G.Perelman), which is the Log-Sobolev inequalities on the Riemannian manifold and $V$ correspond…
In those lecture notes, we review some applications of heat semigroups methods in Riemannian and sub-Riemannian geometry. The notes contain parts of courses taught at Purdue University, Institut Henri Poincaré, Levico Summer School and Tata Institute.
We consider a complete noncompact smooth Riemannian manifold $M$ with a weighted measure and the associated drifting Laplacian. We demonstrate that whenever the $q$-Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor on $M$ is bounded below, then we can obtain an upper bound estimate for the heat kernel of the drifting Laplacian from the upper bound estimates of the heat kernels of the Laplacians on a family of related warped product spaces. We apply these results to study the essential spectrum of the drifting Laplacian on $M$.
The purpose of this paper is to study gradient estimate of Hamilton - Souplet - Zhang type for the general heat equation $$ u_t=Δ_V u + au\log u+bu $$ on noncompact Riemannian manifolds. As its application, we show a Harnak inequality for the heat solution and a Liouville type theorem for a nonlinear elliptic equation. Our results are an extention and improvement of the work of Souplet - Zhang (\cite{SZ}), Ruan (\cite{Ruan}), Yi Li (\cite{Yili}) and Huang-Ma (\cite{HM}).
In this paper, we consider the heat flow for p-pseudoharmonic maps from a closed Sasakian manifold M into a compact Riemannian manifold N. We prove global existence and asymptotic convergence of the solution for the p-pseudoharmonic map heat flow, provided that the sectional curvature of the target manifold N is nonpositive. Moreover, without the curvature assumption on the target manifold, we obtain global existence and asymptotic convergence of the p-pseudoharmonic map heat flow as well when its initial p-energy is sufficiently small.
In this article we derive Harnack estimates for conjugate heat kernel in an abstract geometric flow. Our calculation involves a correction term D. When D is nonnegative, we are able to obtain a Harnack inequality. Our abstract formulation provides a unified framework for some known results, in particular including corresponding results of Ni, Perelman, and Tran as special cases. Moreover it leads to new results in the setting of Ricci-Harmonic flow and mean curvature flow in Lorentzian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.
We study the heat trace for both the drifting Laplacian as well as Schrödinger operators on compact Riemannian manifolds. In the case of a finite regularity potential or weight function, we prove the existence of a partial (six term) asymptotic expansion of the heat trace for small times as well as a suitable remainder estimate. We also demonstrate that the more precise asymptotic behavior of the remainder is determined by and conversely distinguishes higher (Sobolev) regularity on the potential or weight function. In the case of a smooth weight function, we determine the full asymptotic expan…
We introduce a new entropy functional for nonnegative solutions of the heat equation on a manifold with time-dependent Riemannian metric. Under certain integral assumptions, we show that this entropy is non-decreasing, and moreover convex if the metric evolves under super Ricci flow (which includes Ricci flow and fixed metrics with nonnegative Ricci curvature). As applications, we classify nonnegative ancient solutions to the heat equation according to their entropies. In particular, we show that a nonnegative ancient solution whose entropy grows sublinearly on a manifold evolving under super …
D.Freed has formulated and proved an index theorem on odd dimensional spin manifolds with boundary. The proof is based on analysis by Calderon and Seeley. In this note we are going to give a proof of this theorem using the heat kernels methods for boundary conditions of Dirichlet and Von Neumann type. Moreover we consider also the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer spectral boundary condition which is not considered in Freed's paper. As a direct consequence of the method, we will obtain some information about isospectral invariants of the boundary conditions. This proof does not uses the cobordism invarianc…
We derive several mean value formulae on manifolds, generalizing the classical one for harmonic functions on Euclidean spaces as well as later results of Schoen-Yau, Michael-Simon, etc, on curved Riemannian manifolds. For the heat equation a mean value theorem with respect to `heat spheres' is proved for heat equation with respect to evolving Riemannian metrics via a space-time consideration. Some new monotonicity formulae are derived. As applications of the new local monotonicity formulae, some local regularity theorems concerning Ricci flow are proved.
In this short note we present local derivative estimates for heat equations on Riemannian manifolds following the line of W.-X. Shi. As an application we generalize a second derivative estimate of R. Hamilton for heat equations on compact manifolds to noncompact case.
In this paper, we prove sharp gradient estimates for a positive solution to the heat equation $u_t=Δu+au\log u$ in complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. As its application, we show that if $u$ is a positive solution of the equation $u_t=Δu$ and $\log u$ is of sublinear growth in both spatial and time directions then $u$ must be constant. This gradient estimate is sharp since it is well-known that $u(x,t)=e^{x+t}$ satisfying $u_t=Δu$. We also emphasize that our results are better than those given by Jiang (\cite{XJ16}), Souplet-Zhang (\cite{SZ06}), Wu (\cite{Wu15, Wu17}), and others.
In this work, we obtain a short time existence result for harmonic map heat flow coupled with a smooth family of complete metrics in the domain manifold. Our results generalize short time existence results for harmonic map heat flow by Li-Tam [The heat equation and harmonic maps of complete manifolds, Invent. Math., 1991] and Chen-Zhu [Uniqueness of the Ricci flow on complete noncompact manifolds, J. Differential Geometry, 2006]. In particular, we prove the short time existence of harmonic map heat flow along a complete Ricci flow $g(t)$ on $M$ into a complete manifold with curvature bounded f…
We give an asymptotic expansion of the relative entropy between the heat kernel $q_Z(t,z,w)$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $Z$ and the normalized Riemannian volume for small values of $t$ and for a fixed element $z\in Z$. We prove that coefficients in the expansion can be expressed as universal polynomials in the components of the curvature tensor and its covariant derivatives at $z$, when they are expressed in terms of normal coordinates. We describe a method to compute the coefficients, and we use the method to compute the first three coefficients. The asymptotic expansion is necessary fo…
We investigate a parabolic-elliptic system for maps $(u,v)$ from a compact Riemann surface $M$ into a Lorentzian manifold $N\times{\mathbb{R}}$ with a warped product metric. That system turns the harmonic map type equations into a parabolic system, but keeps the $v$-equation as a nonlinear second order constraint along the flow. We prove a global existence result of the parabolic-elliptic system by assuming either some geometric conditions on the target Lorentzian manifold or small energy of the initial maps. The result implies the existence of a Lorentzian harmonic map in a given homotopy cla…
The paper establishes a series of gradient estimates for positive solutions to the heat equation on a manifold $M$ evolving under the Ricci flow, coupled with the harmonic map flow between $M$ and a second manifold $N$. We prove Li-Yau type Harnack inequalities and we consider the cases when $M$ is a complete manifold without boundary and when $M$ is compact, without boundary.
This article shows that if the negative part of Ricci curvature lies in the Kato class, the heat kernel satisfies a Li-Yau type estimate. Additionally, using the resulting heat kernel bound, we show that the obtained heat kernel estimate leads to bounds on the first Betti number only depending on the Kato constant.
We study some qualitative properties of ancient solutions of superlinear heat equations on a Riemannian manifold, with particular interest in positivity and constancy in space.
In this paper, we study two kind of L^2 norm preserved non-local heat flows on closed manifolds. We first study the global existence, stability and asymptotic behavior to such non-local heat flows. Next we give the gradient estimates of positive solutions to these heat flows.
Asymptotic expansions of heat kernels and heat traces of Schrödinger operators on non-compact spaces are rarely explored, and even for cases as simple as $\mathbb{C}^n$ with (quasi-homogeneous) polynomials potentials, it's already very complicated. Motivated by path integral formulation of the heat kernel, we introduced a parabolic distance, which also appeared in Li-Yau's famous work on parabolic Harnack estimate. With the help of the parabolic distance, we derive a pointwise asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel for the Witten Laplacian with strong remainder estimate. When the deformation …
In a 1991 paper by Buttig and Eichhorn, the existence and uniqueness of a differential forms heat kernel on open manifolds of bounded geometry was proven. In that paper, it was shown that the heat kernel obeyed certain properties, one of which was a relationship between the derivative of heat kernel of different degrees. We will give a proof of this condition for complete manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, and then use it to give an integral representation of the heat kernel of degree $k$.
A quaternionic contact (qc) heat equation and the corresponding qc energy functional are introduced. It is shown that the qc energy functional is monotone non-increasing along the qc heat equation on a compact qc manifold provided certain positivity conditions are satisfied.
In this short note, we study the gradient estimate of positive solutions to Poisson equation and the non-homogeneous heat equation in a compact Riemannian manifold (M^n,g). Our results extend the gradient estimate for positive harmonic functions and positive solutions to heat equations.
We proved a matrix Li-Yau-Hamilton type gradient estimates for the positive solutin of the heat equation on complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature. As a consequence we obtain a comparison theorem for the distance function under this curvature assumption.
We study the radial parts of the Brownian motions on Kähler and quaternion Kähler manifolds. Thanks to sharp Laplacian comparison theorems, we deduce as a consequence a sharp Cheeger-Yau type lower bound for the heat kernels of such manifolds and also sharp Cheng's type estimates for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of metric balls.
We consider the harmonic heat flow for maps from a compact Riemannian manifold into a Riemannian manifold that is complete and of non-positive curvature. We prove that if the harmonic heat flow converges to a limiting harmonic map that is a non-degenerate critical point of the energy functional, then the rate of convergence is exponential (in the $L^2$ norm).
In this paper, we successfully generalize the eigenvalue comparison theorem for the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian ($1<p<\infty$) obtained by Matei [A.-M. Matei, First eigenvalue for the $p$-Laplace operator, Nonlinear Anal. TMA 39 (8) (2000) 1051--1068] and Takeuchi [H. Takeuchi, On the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian in a Riemannian manifold, Tokyo J. Math. 21 (1998) 135--140], respectively. Moreover, we use this generalized eigenvalue comparison theorem to get estimates for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian of geodesic balls on complete Riemannian manifolds with radial Ricc…
In this paper, we study the heat kernel associated to the intrinsic sublaplacian on a quaternionic contact manifold considered as a subriemannian manifold. More precisely, we explicitly compute the first two coefficients $c_0$ and $c_1$ appearing in the small time asymptotics expansion of the heat kernel on the diagonal. We show that the second coefficient $c_1$ depends linearly on the qc scalar curvature $κ$. Finally we apply our results to compact qc-Einstein manifolds and prove the spectral invariance of geometric quantities in the subriemannian setting.
We calculate heat invariants of arbitrary Riemannian manifolds without boundary. Every heat invariant is expressed in terms of powers of the Laplacian and the distance function. Our approach is based on a multi-dimensional generalization of the Agmon-Kannai method. An application to computation of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy is also presented.
We study curvature dimension inequalities for the sub-Laplacian on contact Riemannian manifolds. This new curvature dimension condition is then used to obtain: 1) Geometric conditions ensuring the compactness of the underlying manifold (Bonnet-Myers type results); 2) Volume estimates of metric balls; 3) Gradient bounds and stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian; 4) Spectral gap estimates.
In this talk, we review the heat kernel approach to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on closed manifolds, as well as the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary. We also discuss the odd dimensional counterparts of the above results. In particular, we describe a joint result with Xianzhe Dai on an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary.
We study the solvability of the initial value problem for the semilinear heat equation $u_t-Δu=u^p$ in a Riemannian manifold $M$ with a nonnegative Radon measure $μ$ on $M$ as initial data. We give sharp conditions on the local-in-time solvability of the problem for complete and connected $M$ with positive injectivity radius and bounded sectional curvature.
We show that, on a complete, connected and non-compact Riemannian manifold of non-negative Ricci curvature, the solution to the heat equation with $L^{1}$ initial data behaves asymptotically as the mass times the heat kernel. In contrast to the previously known results in negatively curved contexts, the radiality assumption on the initial data is not required. Similar long-time convergence results remain valid on more general manifolds satisfying the Li-Yau two-sided estimate of the heat kernel. Moreover, we provide a counterexample such that this asymptotic phenomenon fails in sup norm on man…
We approximate the heat kernel $h(x,y,t)$ on a compact connected Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary uniformly in $(x,y,t)\in M\times M\times [a,b]$, $a>0$, by $n$-fold integrals over $M^n$ of the densities of Brownian bridges. Moreover, we provide an estimate for the uniform convergence rate. As an immediate corollary, we get a uniform approximation of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the heat equation on $M$.
We study a "div-grad type" sub-Laplacian with respect to a smooth measure and its associated heat semigroup on a compact equiregular sub-Riemannian manifold. We prove a short time asymptotic expansion of the heat trace up to any order. Our main result holds true for any smooth measure on the manifold, but it has a spectral geometric meaning when Popp's measure is considered. Our proof is probabilistic. In particular, we use S. Watanabe's distributional Malliavin calculus.
This is first of series papers on new two-side Gaussian bounds for the heat kernel $H(x,y,t)$ on a complete manifold $(M,g)$. In this paper, on a complete manifold $M$ with $Ric(M)\geq 0$, we obtain new two-side Gaussian bounds for the heat kernel $H(x,y,t)$, which improve the well-known Li-Yau's two-side bounds. As applications of our new two-side Gaussian bounds, We obtain a sharp gradient estimate and a Laplacian estimate for the heat kernel on a complete manifold with $Ric(M)\geq 0$, and we also give a simpler proof for the result concerning the asymptotic behavior in the time variable for…
We derive a sharp, localized version of elliptic type gradient estimates for positive solutions (bounded or not) to the heat equation. These estimates are akin to the Cheng-Yau estimate for the Laplace equation and Hamilton's estimate for bounded solutions to the heat equation on compact manifolds. As applications, we generalize Yau's celebrated Liouville theorem for positive harmonic functions to positive eternal solutions of the heat equation, under certain growth condition. Surprisingly, this Liouville theorem for the heat equation does not hold even in ${\bf R}^n$ without such a condition.…
We construct the biharmonic heat kernel for a suitable self-adjoint extension of the bi-Laplacian on a manifold with incomplete edge singularities. We employ a microlocal description of the biharmonic heat kernel to establish mapping properties of the corresponding biharmonic heat operator on certain Banach spaces. This yields short time existence for a class of semi-linear equations of fourth order, including for example the Cahn-Hilliard equation. We also obtain asymptotics of the solutions near the edge singularity.
We consider the heat operator acting on differential forms on spaces with complete and incomplete edge metrics. In the latter case we study the heat operator of the Hodge Laplacian with algebraic boundary conditions at the edge singularity. We establish the mapping properties of the heat operator, recovering and extending the classical results from smooth manifolds and conical spaces. The estimates, together with strong continuity of the heat operator, yield short-time existence of solutions to certain semilinear parabolic equations. Our discussion reviews and generalizes earlier work by Jeffr…
