We study a "div-grad type" sub-Laplacian with respect to a smooth measure and its associated heat semigroup on a compact equiregular sub-Riemannian manifold. We prove a short time asymptotic expansion of the heat trace up to any order. Our main result holds true for any smooth measure on the manifold, but it has a spectral geometric meaning when Popp's measure is considered. Our proof is probabilistic. In particular, we use S. Watanabe's distributional Malliavin calculus.
Under a nondegeneracy condition, we show that an equiregular sub-Riemannian manifold of step size $r$ admits a canonical, $V$-rigid complement defined from the sub-Riemannian data that is preserved the by action of sub-Riemannian isometries. We explore how the existence of such a complement relates to results from the literature and study the step size 2 case in more detail.
We prove that in a class of non-equiregular sub-Riemannian manifolds corners are not length minimizing. This extends the results [4]. As an application of our main result we complete and simplify the analysis in [6], showing that in a 4-dimensional sub-Riemannian structure suggested by Agrachev and Gauthier all length-minimizing curves are smooth.
This paper is a starting point towards computing the Hausdorff dimension of submanifolds and the Hausdorff volume of small balls in a sub-Riemannian manifold with singular points. We first consider the case of a strongly equiregular submanifold, i.e., a smooth submanifold N for which the growth vector of the distribution D and the growth vector of the intersection of D with TN are constant on N. In this case, we generalize the result in [12], which relates the Hausdorff dimension to the growth vector of the distribution. We then consider analytic sub-Riemannian manifolds and, under the assumpt…
The notion of curvature discussed in this paper is a far going generalization of the Riemannian sectional curvature. It was first introduced by Agrachev, Barilari and Rizzi in arXiv:1306.5318, and it is defined for a wide class of optimal control problems: a unified framework including geometric structures such as Riemannian, sub-Riemannian, Finsler, and sub-Finsler structures. In this work we study the generalized sectional curvature of Carnot groups with rank-two distributions. In particular, we consider the Cartan group and Carnot groups with horizontal distribution of Goursat-type. In thes…
For an equiregular sub-Riemannian manifold M, Popp's volume is a smooth volume which is canonically associated with the sub-Riemannian structure, and it is a natural generalization of the Riemannian one. In this paper we prove a general formula for Popp's volume, written in terms of a frame adapted to the sub-Riemannian distribution. As a first application of this result, we prove an explicit formula for the canonical sub-Laplacian, namely the one associated with Popp's volume. Finally, we discuss sub-Riemannian isometries, and we prove that they preserve Popp's volume. We also show that, unde…
In this article we study the validity of the Whitney $C^1$ extension property for horizontal curves in sub-Riemannian manifolds endowed with 1-jets that satisfy a first-order Taylor expansion compatibility condition. We first consider the equiregular case, where we show that the extension property holds true whenever a suitable non-singularity property holds for the input-output maps on the Carnot groups obtained by nilpotent approximation. We then discuss the case of sub-Riemannian manifolds with singular points and we show that all step-2 manifolds satisfy the $C^1$ extension property. We co…
We prove a general essential self-adjointness criterion for sub-Laplacians on complete sub-Riemannian manifolds, defined with respect to singular measures. As a consequence, we show that the intrinsic sub-Laplacian (i.e. defined w.r.t. Popp's measure) is essentially self-adjoint on the equiregular connected components of a sub-Riemannian manifold. This result holds under mild regularity assumptions on the singular region, and when the latter does not contain characteristic points.
We study spectral properties of sub-Riemannian Laplacians, which are hypoelliptic operators. The main objective is to obtain quantum ergodicity results, what we have achieved in the 3D contact case. In the general case we study the small-time asymptotics of sub-Riemannian heat kernels. We prove that they are given by the nilpotentized heat kernel. In the equiregular case, we infer the local and microlocal Weyl law, putting in light the Weyl measure in sR geometry. This measure coincides with the Popp measure in low dimension but differs from it in general. We prove that spectral concentration …
In this paper we prove a sub-Riemannian version of the classical Santaló formula: a result in integral geometry that describes the intrinsic Liouville measure on the unit cotangent bundle in terms of the geodesic flow. Our construction works under quite general assumptions, satisfied by any sub-Riemannian structure associated with a Riemannian foliation with totally geodesic leaves (e.g. CR and QC manifolds with symmetries), any Carnot group, and some non-equiregular structures such as the Martinet one. A key ingredient is a "reduction procedure" that allows to consider only a simple subset of…
On a sub-Riemannian manifold we define two type of Laplacians. The \emph{macroscopic Laplacian} $Δ_ω$, as the divergence of the horizontal gradient, once a volume $ω$ is fixed, and the \emph{microscopic Laplacian}, as the operator associated with a sequence of geodesic random walks. We consider a general class of random walks, where \emph{all} sub-Riemannian geodesics are taken in account. This operator depends only on the choice of a complement $\mathbf{c}$ to the sub-Riemannian distribution, and is denoted $L^c$. We address the problem of equivalence of the two operators. This problem is int…
We consider the basic heat operator on functions on a Riemannian foliation of a compact, Riemannian manifold, and we show that the trace of this operator has a particular short time asymptotic expansion. The coefficients in this expansion are obtainable from local transverse geometric invariants - functions computable by analyzing the manifold in an arbitrarily small neighborhood of a leaf closure. Using this expansion, we prove some results about the spectrum of the basic Laplacian, such as the analogue of Weyl's asymptotic formula. Also, we explicitly calculate the first two nontrivial coeff…
Consider a Riemannian symmetric space $X= G/K$ of non-compact type, where $G$ denotes a connected, real, semi-simple Lie group with finite center, and $K$ a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. Let $\widetilde X$ be its Oshima compactification, and $(π,\mathrm{C}(\widetilde X))$ the regular representation of $G$ on $\widetilde X$. In this paper, a regularized trace for the convolution operators $π(f)$ is defined, yielding a distribution on $G$ which can be interpreted as global character of $π$. In case that $f$ has compact support in a certain set of transversal elements, this distribution is a l…
In spin geometry, traceless cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds equipped with a homogeneous spin structure can be viewed as the simplest manifolds after Riemannian symmetric spin spaces. In this paper, we give some characterizations and properties of cyclic and traceless cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds and we obtain the classification of simply-connected cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds of dimension less than or equal to four. We also present a wide list of examples of non-compact irreducible Riemannian $3$-symmetric spaces admitting cyclic metrics and give the expression of…
In this paper we study the small time asymptotics for the heat kernel on a sub-Riemannian manifold, using a perturbative approach. We then explicitly compute, in the case of a 3D contact structure, the first two coefficients of the small time asymptotics expansion of the heat kernel on the diagonal, expressing them in terms of the two basic functional invariants $χ$ and $κ$ defined on a 3D contact structure.
A vector field on a Riemannian manifold is called conformal Killing if it generates one-parameter group of conformal transformations. The class of conformal Killing symmetric tensor fields of an arbitrary rank is a natural generalization of the class of conformal Killing vector fields, and appears in different geometric and physical problems. A symmetric tensor field is a trace-free field if the contraction of the field with the metric tensor is identically equal to zero. On a Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, the space of trace-free conformal Killing symmetric tensor fields of …
For the Bach-flat closed manifold with positive scalar curvature, we prove a rigidity result under a given inequality involving the Weyl curvature and the traceless Ricci curvature. Moveover, under an inequality involving $L^{\frac{n}{2}}$-norm of the Weyl curvature, the traceless Ricci curvature and the Yamabe invariant, we also provide a similar rigidity result. As an application, we obtain some rigidity results on 4-dimensional manifolds.
We study fractional Sobolev and Besov spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. Usually, these spaces are defined via geodesic normal coordinates which, depending on the problem at hand, may often not be the best choice. We consider a more general definition subject to different local coordinates and give sufficient conditions on the corresponding coordinates resulting in equivalent norms. Our main application is the computation of traces on submanifolds with the help of Fermi coordinates. Our results also hold for corresponding spaces defined on vector bundles of bounde…
The Ray-Singer analytic torsion is the zeta-function trace of a certain sum of logarithm operators on the de Rham complex. In this note we examine the residue analytic torsion, defined using the residue-trace instead of the spectral zeta function quasi-trace.
In this note we consider some properties of $GL_n(\mathbb{R})$ with the Semi-Riemannian structure induced by the trace metric $g$. In particular we study geodesics and curvature tensors. Moreover we prove that $GL_n$ has a suitable foliation, whose leaves are isometric to $(SL_n(\mathbb{R}), g)$, while its component of matrices with positive determinant is isometric to the Semi-Riemannian product manifold $SL_n \times \mathbb{R}$.
We consider isotropic Lévy processes on a compact Riemannian manifold, obtained from an $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued Lévy process through rolling without slipping. We prove that the Feller semigroups associated with these processes extend to strongly continuous contraction semigroups on $L^p$, for $1\leq p<\infty$, and that they are self-adjoint when $p=2$. When the motion has a non-trivial Brownian part, we prove that the generator has a discrete spectrum of eigenvalues and that the semigroup is trace-class.
This is a revised version (minor changes and a deeper insight in the positive curvature case). We prove some Caccioppoli's inequalities for the traceless part of the second fundamental form of a complete, noncompact, finite index, constant mean curvature hypersurface of a Riemannian manifold, satisfying some curvature conditions. This allows us to unify and clarify many results scattered in the literature and to obtain some new results. For example, we prove that there is no stable, complete, noncompact hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^{n+1},$ $n\leq 5,$ with constant mean curvature $H\not=0,$ pro…
For complete Riemannian manifolds with vanishing Bach tensor and positive constant scalar curvature, we provide a rigidity theorem characterized by some pointwise inequalities. Furthermore, we prove some rigidity results under an inequality involving $L^{\frac{n}{2}}$-norm of the Weyl curvature, the traceless Ricci curvature and the Sobolev constant.
We show the existence of nonsymmetric homogeneous spin Riemannian manifolds whose Dirac operator is like that on a Riemannian symmetric spin space. Such manifolds are exactly the homogeneous spin Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ which are traceless cyclic with respect to some quotient expression $M=G/K$ and reductive decomposition $\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{m}$. Using transversally symmetric fibrations of noncompact type, we give a list of them.
In this thesis we study the geometry of the fixed point set $Σ$ of a smooth mapping $Φ: M\to M$ on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary by computing the asymptotic expansion of the deformed heat trace $\Trace Φ\exp(tΔ)$ of the Laplace operator $Δ$ on $M$. We assume that the fixed point set $Σ$ is a union of connected components, each of which is a smooth compact submanifold of $M$ without boundary. The deformed heat trace asymptotics is determined by contributions of each connected component, so each of them can be studied separately. We develop a generalized Laplace metho…
We study the heat trace for both the drifting Laplacian as well as Schrödinger operators on compact Riemannian manifolds. In the case of a finite regularity potential or weight function, we prove the existence of a partial (six term) asymptotic expansion of the heat trace for small times as well as a suitable remainder estimate. We also demonstrate that the more precise asymptotic behavior of the remainder is determined by and conversely distinguishes higher (Sobolev) regularity on the potential or weight function. In the case of a smooth weight function, we determine the full asymptotic expan…
In this paper we prove a version of Connes' trace theorem for noncommutative tori of any dimension~$n\geq 2$. This allows us to recover and improve earlier versions of this result in dimension $n=2$ and $n=4$ by Fathizadeh-Khalkhali. We also recover the Connes integration formula for flat noncommutative tori of McDonald-Sukochev-Zanin. As a further application we prove a curved version of this integration formula in terms of the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined by an arbitrary Riemannian metric. For the class of so-called self-compatible Riemannian metrics (including the conformally flat metr…
We prove several relations between spectrum and dynamics including wave trace expansion, sharp/improved Weyl laws, propagation of singularities and quantum ergodicity for the sub-Riemannian (sR) Laplacian in the four dimensional quasi-contact case. A key role in all results is played by the presence of abnormal geodesics and represents the first such appearance of these in sub-Riemannian spectral geometry.
In this short note, we show the rigidity of a trace estimate for Steklov eigenvalues with respect to functions in our previous work (Trace and inverse trace of Steklov eigenvalues. J. Differential Equations 261 (2016), no. 3, 2026--2040.). Namely, we show that equality of the estimate holds if and only if the manifold is a direct product of a round ball and a closed manifold. The key ingredient in the proof is a decomposition theorem for flat and totally geodesic Riemannian submersions which may be of independent interests.
This paper is devoted to investigate the heat trace asymptotic expansion corresponding to the magnetic Steklov eigenvalue problem on Riemannian manifolds with boundary. We establish an effective procedure, by which we can calculate all the coefficients $a_0$, $a_1$, $\dots$, $a_{n-1}$ of the heat trace asymptotic expansion. In particular, we explicitly give the expressions for the first four coefficients. These coefficients are spectral invariants which provide precise information concerning the volume and curvatures of the boundary of the manifold and some physical quantities by the magnetic …
In this paper we study absence of embedded eigenvalues for Schrödinger operators on non-compact connected Riemannian manifolds. A principal example is given by a manifold with an end (possibly more than one) in which geodesic coordinates are naturally defined. In this case one of our geometric conditions is a positive lower bound of the second fundamental form of angular submanifolds at infinity inside the end. Another condition may be viewed (at least in a special case) as being a bound of the trace of this quantity, while similarly, a third one as being a bound of the derivative of this trac…
In this paper we generalize the main result of [4] for manifolds that are not necessarily Einstein. In fact, we obtain an upper bound for the volume of a locally volume-minimizing closed hypersurface $Σ$ of a Riemannian 5-manifold $M$ with scalar curvature bounded from below by a positive constant in terms of the total traceless Ricci curvature of $Σ$. Furthermore, if $Σ$ saturates the respective upper bound and $M$ has nonnegative Ricci curvature, then $Σ$ is isometric to $\mathbb{S}^4$ up to scaling and $M$ splits in a neighborhood of $Σ$. Also, we obtain a rigidity result for the Riemannian…
In this article, we examine the geometry of a group of Fourier-integral operators, which is the central extension of $Diff(S^1)$ with a group of classical pseudo-differential operators of any order. Several subgroups are considered, and the corresponding groups with formal pseudodifferential operators are defined. We investigate the relationship of this group with the restricted general linear group $GL_{res},$ we define a right-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric on it that extends the Hilbert-Schmidt Riemannian metric by the use of renormalized traces of pseudo-differential operators, and we …
Principal Component Analysis can be performed over small domains of an embedded Riemannian manifold in order to relate the covariance analysis of the underlying point set with the local extrinsic and intrinsic curvature. We show that the volume of domains on a submanifold of general codimension, determined by the intersection with higher-dimensional cylinders and balls in the ambient space, have asymptotic expansions in terms of the mean and scalar curvatures. Moreover, we propose a generalization of the classical third fundamental form to general submanifolds and prove that the eigenvalue dec…
Let $(M^n, g)(n\geq3)$ be an $n$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold with harmonic curvature and positive Yamabe constant. Denote by $R$ and $\mathring{Rm}$ the scalar curvature and the trace-free Riemannian curvature tensor of $M$, respectively. The main result of this paper states that $\mathring{Rm}$ goes to zero uniformly at infinity if for $p\geq \frac n2$, the $L^{p}$-norm of $\mathring{Rm}$ is finite. Moreover, If $R$ is positive, then $(M^n, g)$ is compact. As applications, we prove that $(M^n, g)$ is isometric to a spherical space form if for $p\geq \frac n2$, $R$ is positive and…
In this paper we introduce a notion of scattering theory for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on non-compact, connected and complete Riemannian manifolds. A principal condition is given by a certain positive lower bound of the second fundamental form of angular submanifolds at infinity. Another condition is certain bounds of derivatives up to order one of the trace of this quantity. These conditions are shown to be optimal for existence and completeness of a wave operator. Our theory does not involve prescribed asymptotic behaviour of the metric at infinity (like asymptotic Euclidean or hyperboli…
Given a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold $Y$ on which a compact Lie group $G$ acts, there is always a metric on $Y$ such that the action is by isometries. Assuming $Y$ is equipped with such a metric, recall that the $G$-invariant Laplacian is the restriction of the ordinary Laplacian to the space of functions which are constant along the orbits of $G$. In this paper, the author analyzes the wave trace of the $G$-invariant Laplacian and shows that the singularities of this wave trace occur at the lengths of certain geodesic arcs--those that are orthogonal to the orbits and whose endpoin…
In this paper, we shall prove that, on a non-flat Riemannian vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold, the smooth solution of the Yang-Mills flow will blow up in finite time if the energy of the initial connection is small enough. We also consider the finite time blow up for the Yang-Mills flow with the initial curvature near the harmonic form. Furthermore, when $E$ is a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold, then $E$ will admit a projective flat structure if the trace free part of Chern curvature is small enough.
We consider sequences of compact Riemannian manifolds with uniform Sobolev bounds on their metric tensors, and prove that their distance functions are uniformly bounded in the Hölder sense. This is done by establishing a general trace inequality on Riemannian manifolds which is an interesting result on its own. We provide examples demonstrating how each of our hypotheses are necessary. In the Appendix by the first author with Christina Sormani, we prove that sequences of compact integral current spaces without boundary (including Riemannian manifolds) that have uniform Hölder bounds on their d…
We study new invariants of elliptic partial differential operators acting on sections of a vector bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold that we call the relativistic heat trace and the quantum heat traces. We obtain some reduction formulas expressing these new invariants in terms of some integral transforms of the usual classical heat trace and compute the asymptotics of these invariants. The coefficients of these asymptotic expansion are determined by the usual heat trace coefficients (which are locally computable) as well as by some new global invariants.
This paper is devoted to study the asymptotic expansion of the heat trace of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the thermoelastic equation on a Riemannian manifold with doundary. By providing a method we can obtain all the coefficients of the asymptotic expansion. In particular, we explicitly give the first two coefficients involving the volume and the total mean curvature of the boundary.
In this thesis we deal with spectral invariants for polygons and closed orbisurfaces of constant Gaussian curvature. In each case our method is to study the heat kernel and the asymptotic expansion of the heat trace. First, we investigate hyperbolic polygons, i.e. relatively compact domains in the hyperbolic plane with piecewise geodesic boundary. We compute the asymptotic expansion of the heat trace associated to the Dirichlet Laplacian of any hyperbolic polygon, and we obtain explicit formulas for all heat invariants. Analogous results for Euclidean and spherical polygons were known before. …
In this work we prove convergence results of sequences of Riemannian $4$-manifolds with almost vanishing $L^2$-norm of a curvature tensor and a non-collapsing bound on the volume of small balls. In Theorem 1.1, we consider a sequence of closed Riemannian $4$-manifolds, whose $L^2$-norm of the Riemannian curvature tensor tends to zero. Under the assumption of a uniform non-collapsing bound and a uniform diameter bound, we prove that there exists a subsequence that converges with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff topology to a flat manifold. In Theorem 1.2, we consider a sequence of closed Riemann…
Let $M$ be a closed Riemannian manifold with a family of Riemannian metrics $g_{ij}(t)$ evolving by a geometric flow $\partial_{t}g_{ij} = -2{S}_{ij}$, where $S_{ij}(t)$ is a family of smooth symmetric two-tensors. We derive several differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions to the nonlinear backward heat-type equation \begin{eqnarray*} \frac{\partial f}{\partial t} = -Δf + γf\log f +aSf \end{eqnarray*} where $a$ and $γ$ are constants and $S=g^{ij}S_{ij}$ is the trace of $S_{ij}$. Our abstract formulation provides a unified framework for some known results proved by various authors,…
