Let's fix a complex abelian scheme $\mathcal A\to S$ of relative dimension $g$, without fixed part, and having maximal variation in moduli. We show that the relative monodromy group $M^{\textrm{rel}}_σ$ of a ramified section $σ\colon S\to\mathcal A$ is nontrivial. Moreover, under some hypotheses on the action of the monodromy group $\textrm{Mon}(\mathcal A)$ we show that $M^{\textrm{rel}}_σ\cong \mathbb Z^{2g}$. We discuss several examples and applications. For instance we provide a new proof of Manin's kernel theorem and of the algebraic independence of the coordinates of abelian logarithms with respect to the coordinates of periods.
We compute new polynomials with Galois group $M_{11}$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. These polynomials stem from various families of covers of $\mathbb{P}^1\mathbb{C}$ ramified over at least 4 points. Each of these families has features that make a detailed study interesting. Some of the polynomials lead, via specialization, to number fields with very small discriminant or few ramified primes.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ and let $X$ the projective line over $k$ with three points removed. We investigate which finite groups $G$ can arise as the monodromy group of finite étale covers of $X$ that are tamely ramified over the three removed points. This provides new information about the tame fundamental group of the projective line. In particular, we show that for each prime $p\ge 5$, there are families of tamely ramified covers with monodromy the symmetric group $S_n$ or alternating group $A_n$ for infinitely many $n$. These covers come from the moduli…
Let p be an odd prime, and k_\infty the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of an abelian field k. For a finite set S of rational primes which does not include p, we will consider the maximal S-ramified abelian pro-p extension M_S(k_\infty) over k_\infty. We shall give a formula of the Z_p-rank of Gal(M_S(k_\infty)/k_\infty). In the proof of this formula, we also show that M_{q}(k_\infty)/L(k_\infty) is a finite extension for every real abelian field k and every rational prime q distinct from p, where L(k_\infty) is the maximal unramified abelian pro-p extension over k_\infty.
In this paper, we give explicit descriptions of Hyodo and Kato's Frobenius and Monodromy operators on the first $p$-adic de Rham cohomology groups of curves and Abelian varieties with semi-stable reduction over local fields of mixed characteristic. This paper was motivated by the first author's paper "A $p$-adic Shimura isomorphism and periods of modular forms," where conjectural definitions of these operators for curves with semi-stable reduction were given.
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
Let K be a number field, t a parameter, F=K(t) and f in K[x] a polynomial of degree d. The polynomial P_n(x,t)= f^n(x) - t in F[x] where f^n is the n-fold iterate of f, is absolutely irreducible over F; we compute a recursion for its discriminant. Let L=L(f) be the field obtained by adjoining to F all roots, in a fixed algebraic closure, of P_n for all n; its Galois group Gal(L/F) is the iterated monodromy group of f. The iterated extension L/F is finitely ramified if and only if f is post-critically finite (pcf). We show that, moreover, for pcf polynomials f, every specialization of L/F at t=…
Associated to an abelian variety over a number field are several interesting and related groups: the motivic Galois group, the Mumford-Tate group, $\ell$-adic monodromy groups, and the Sato-Tate group. Assuming the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we show that from two well chosen Frobenius polynomials of our abelian variety, we can recover the identity component of these groups (or at least an inner form), up to isomorphism, along with their natural representations. We also obtain a practical probabilistic algorithm to compute these groups by considering more and more Frobenius polynomials; the group…
For a prime number p, we denote by K the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of a number field k. For a finite set S of prime numbers, we consider the S-ramified Iwasawa module which is the Galois group of the maximal abelian pro-p-extension of K unramified outside S. This paper treats the case where S does not contain p and k is the rational number field or an imaginary quadratic field. In this case, we prove the explicit formulae for the free ranks of the S-ramified Iwasawa modules as abelian pro-p groups, by using Brumer's p-adic version of Baker's theorem on the linear independence of logarithms of a…
We prove new results on the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties over finitely generated fields $k$ of characteristic zero. For example, given a ramified cover $π: X \to A$, where $A$ is an abelian variety over $k$ with a dense set of $k$-rational points, we prove that there is a finite-index coset $C \subset A(k)$ such that $π(X(k))$ is disjoint from $C$. Our results do not seem to be in the range of other methods available at present; they confirm predictions coming from Lang's conjectures on rational points, and also go in the direction of an issue raised …
Corvaja and Zannier conjectured that an abelian variety over a number field satisfies a modified version of the Hilbert property. We investigate their conjecture for products of elliptic curves using Kawamata's structure result for ramified covers of abelian varieties, and Faltings's finiteness theorem for rational points on higher genus curves.
We compute the density of the set of ordinary primes of an abelian surface over a number field in terms of the l-adic monodromy group. Using the classification of l-adic monodromy groups of abelian surfaces by Fite, Kedlaya, Rotger, and Sutherland, we show the density is 1, 1/2, or 1/4.
Deligne's weight-monodromy conjecture gives control over the poles of local factors of L-functions of varieties at places of bad reduction. His proof in characteristic p was a step in his proof of the generalized Weil conjectures. Scholze developed the theory of perfectoid spaces to transfer Deligne's proof to characteristic 0, proving the conjecture for complete intersections in toric varieties. Building on Scholze's techniques, we prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for complete intersections in abelian varieties.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$. Suppose its dual abelian variety $A'$ has good non-ordinary reduction at the primes above $p$. Let $F_{\infty}/F$ be a $\mathbb Z_p$-extension, and for simplicity, assume that there is only one prime $\mathfrak p$ of $F_{\infty}$ above $p$, and $F_{\infty, \mathfrak p}/\mathbb Q_p$ is totally ramified and abelian. (For example, we can take $F=\mathbb Q(ζ_{p^N})$ for some $N$, and $F_{\infty}=\mathbb Q(ζ_{p^{\infty}})$.) As Perrin-Riou did, we use Fontaine's theory of group schemes to construct series of points over each $F_{n, \mat…
In this paper we study the wild part of the finite monodromy groups of abelian varieties over number fields. We solve Grunwald problems for groups of the form $\mathbf{Z}/p\mathbf{Z}\wr \mathfrak{S}_n$ over number fields to build CM abelian varieties with maximal wild finite monodromy in the odd prime case. For the even prime case we prove a new bound on the 2-part of the order of the finite monodromy group for CM abelian varieties and build varieties that reach it.
The Steinitz class of a number field extension K/k is an ideal class in the ring of integers O_k of k, which, together with the degree [K:k] of the extension determines the O_k-module structure of O_K. We call rt(k,G) the classes which are Steinitz classes of a tamely ramified G-extension of k. We will say that those classes are realizable for the group G; it is conjectured that the set of realizable classes is always a group. We define A'-groups inductively, starting by abelian groups and then considering semidirect products of A'-groups with abelian groups of relatively prime order and direc…
Let $E$ be an abelian scheme over a geometrically connected variety $X$ defined over $k$, a finitely generated field over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $η$ be the generic point of $X$ and $x\in X$ a closed point. If $\mathfrak{g}_l$ and $(\mathfrak{g}_l)_x$ are the Lie algebras of the $l$-adic Galois representations for abelian varieties $E_η$ and $E_x$, then $(\mathfrak{g}_l)_x$ is embedded in $\mathfrak{g}_l$ by specialization. We prove that the set $\{x\in X$ closed point $| (\mathfrak{g}_l)_x\subsetneq \mathfrak{g}_l\}$ is independent of $l$ and confirm Conjecture 5.5 in [2].
Given a Galois cover of curves X to Y with Galois group G which is totally ramified at a point x and unramified elsewhere, restriction to the punctured formal neighborhood of x induces a Galois extension of Laurent series rings k((u))/k((t)). If we fix a base curve Y , we can ask when a Galois extension of Laurent series rings comes from a global cover of Y in this way. Harbater proved that over a separably closed field, this local-to-global principle holds for any base curve if G is a p-group, and gave a condition for the uniqueness of such an extension. Using a generalization of Artin-Schrei…
We prove new results concerning the additive Galois module structure of certain wildly ramified finite non-abelian extensions of Q. In particular, when K/Q is a Galois extension with Galois group G isomorphic to A4, S4 or A5, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring of integers of K to be free over its associated order in the rational group algebra Q[G].
We study monodromy action on abelian varieties satisfying certain bad reduction conditions. These conditions allow us to get some control over the Galois image. As a consequence we verify the Mumford--Tate conjecture for such abelian varieties.
In this paper we make an initial study on type D moduli spaces in positive characteristic $p\neq 2$, where we allow $p$ ramified in the definite quaternion algebra. We classify the isogeny classes of $p$-divisible groups with additional structures in question. We also study the reduction of the type $D$ moduli spaces of minimal rank.
For a strictly semistable log scheme $Y$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p$ we investigate the canonical Čech spectral sequence $(C)_T$ abutting to the Hyodo-Kato (log crystalline) cohomology $H_{crys}^*(Y/T)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ of $Y$ and beginning with the log convergent cohomology of its various component intersections $Y^i$. We compare the filtration on $H_{crys}^*(Y/T)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ arising from $(C)_T$ with the monodromy operator $N$ on $H_{crys}^*(Y/T)_{\mathbb{Q}}$. We also express $N$ through residue maps and study relations with singular cohomology. If $Y$ lifts to a proper str…
Let $X_0$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ and let $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ be an irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X_0$. We show that if a subobject of minimal slope of the associated convergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathcal E_0$ admits a non-zero morphism to $\mathcal O_{X_0}$ as a convergent isocrystal, then $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal O^{\dagger}_{X_0}$ as an overconvergent isocrystal. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Kedlaya. The key ingredient in the proof is the study of the monodromy group …
We use new over-convergent p-adic exponential power series, inspired by work of Pulita, to build self-dual normal basis generators for the square root of the inverse different of certain abelian weakly ramified extensions of an unramified extension K of Qp. These extensions, whose set we denote by M, are the degree p subextensions over K of Mp,2, the maximal abelian totally, wildly and weakly ramified extension of K, whose norm group contains p. Our construction follows Pickett's, who dealt with the same set M of extensions of K, but does not depend on the choice of a basis of the residue fiel…
The theory of p-ramification, regarding the Galois group of the maximal pro-p-extension of a number field K, unramified outside p and $\infty$, is well known including numerical experiments with PARI/GP programs. The case of ``incomplete p-ramification'' (i.e., when the set S of ramified places is a strict subset of the set P of the p-places) is, on the contrary, mostly unknown in a theoretical point of view. We give, in a first part, a way to compute, for any S $\le$ P, the structure of the Galois group of the maximal S-ramified abelian pro-p-extension H\_(K,S) of any field K given by means o…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a global field $F$ of positive characteristic $p$ and let $\calf/F$ be a $\Z_p^{\N}$-extension, unramified outside a finite set of places of $F$. Assuming that all ramified places are totally ramified, we define a pro-characteristic ideal associated to the Pontrjagin dual of the $p$-primary Selmer group of $A$, in order to formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture for the non-noetherian commutative Iwasawa algebra $\Z_p[[\Gal(\calf/F)]]$ (which we also prove for a constant abelian variety). To do this we first show the relation between the characteristic i…
We consider a tamely ramified abelian extension of local fields of degree n, without assuming the presence of the nth roots of unity in the base field. We give an explicit formula which computes the local reciprocity map in this situation.
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $G$ a finite group of odd order. If $K_h$ is a weakly ramified $G$-Galois $K$-algebra, then its square root $A_h$ of the inverse different is a locally free $\mathcal{O}_{K}G$-module and hence determines a class in the locally free class group $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ of $\mathcal{O}_KG$. We show that for $G$ abelian and under suitable assumptions, the set of all such classes is a subgroup of $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$.
Explicit descriptions of local integral Galois module generators in certain extensions of $p$-adic fields due to Pickett have recently been used to make progress with open questions on integral Galois module structure in wildly ramified extensions of number fields. In parallel, Pulita has generalised the theory of Dwork's power series to a set of power series with coefficients in Lubin-Tate extensions of $\Q_p$ to establish a structure theorem for rank one solvable p-adic differential equations. In this paper we first generalise Pulita's power series using the theories of formal group exponent…
We partially answer, in terms of monodromy, Murty and Patankar's question: Given an absolutely simple abelian variety over a number field, does it have simple specializations at a set of places of positive Dirichlet density? The answer is based on the classification of pairs (G,V) consisting of a semi-simple algebraic group G over a non-archimedean local field and an absolutely irreducible representation V of G such that G admits a maximal torus acting irreducibly on V.
We formulate and study a torsion analogue of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a proper smooth scheme over a non-archimedean local field. We prove it for proper smooth schemes over equal characteristic non-archimedean local fields, abelian varieties, surfaces, varieties uniformized by Drinfeld upper half spaces, and set-theoretic complete intersections in toric varieties. In the equal characteristic case, our methods rely on an ultraproduct variant of Weil II established by Cadoret.
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field. Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be its ring of integers. Let $k$ be its residue field which we assume to be algebraically closed of characteristic exponent $p\geq1$. Let $G/K$ be a semi-abelian variety. Let $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{O}_K$ be its Néron model. The special fiber $\mathcal{G}_k/k$ is an extension of the identity component $\mathcal{G}_k^0/k$ by the group of components $Φ(G)$. We say that $G/K$ has split reduction if this extension is split. Whereas $G/K$ has always split reduction if $p=1$ we prove that it is no longer the case if $p>1$ even if $G/K…
Let $K$ be a number field and $G$ a finite abelian group. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the number of tamely ramified $G$-extensions of $K$ with ring of integers of fixed realisable class as a Galois module.
Let $A_g$ be an abelian variety of dimension $g$ and $p$-rank $λ\leq 1$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We compute the number of homomorphisms from $π_1^{\text{ét}}(A_g,a)$ to $GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$, where $q$ is any power of $p$. We show that for fixed $g$, $λ$, and $n$, the number of such representations is polynomial in $q$, and give an explicit formula for this polynomial. We show that the set of such homomorphisms forms a constructible set, and use the geometry of this space to deduce information about the coefficients and degree of the polynomial. In the last sec…
Let K be a number field and {V_l} be a rational strictly compatible system of semisimple Galois representations of K arising from geometry. Let G_l and V_l^ab be respectively the algebraic monodromy group and the maximal abelian subrepresentation of V_l for all l. We prove that the system {V_l^ab} is also a rational strictly compatible system under some group theoretic conditions, e.g., when G_l' is connected and satisfies Hypothesis A for some prime l'. As an application, we prove that the Tate conjecture for abelian variety X/K is independent of l if the algebraic monodromy groups of the Gal…
To a family of smooth projective cubic surfaces one can canonically associate a family of abelian fivefolds. In characteristic zero, we calculate the Hodge groups of the abelian varieties which arise in this way. In arbitrary characteristic we calculate the monodromy group of the universal family of abelian varieties, and thus show that the Galois group of the 27 lines on a suitably general cubic surface in positive characteristic is as large as possible.
For any finite abelian group G, we study the moduli space of abelian $G$-covers of elliptic curves, in particular identifying the irreducible components of the moduli space. We prove that, in the totally ramified case, the moduli space has trivial rational Picard group, and it is birational to the moduli space M_{1,n}, where n is the number of branch points. In the particular case of moduli of bielliptic curves, we also prove that the boundary divisors are a basis of the rational Picard group of the admissible covers compactification of the moduli space. Our methods are entirely algebro-geomet…
Let $X/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be a smooth, geometrically connected, quasiprojective variety. Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a semisimple overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X$. Suppose that irreducible summands $\mathcal{E}_i$ of $\mathcal E$ have rank 2, determinant $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p(-1)$, and infinite monodromy at $\infty$. Suppose further that for each closed point $x$ of $X$, the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{E}$ at $x$ is in $\mathbb{Q}[t]\subset \mathbb Q_p[t]$. Then there exists a non-trivial open set $U\subset X$ such that $\mathcal{E}|_U$ comes from a family of abelian varieties on $U$. As an…
In this paper we prove the Geyer-Jarden conjecture on the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil group for a large class of abelian varieties defined over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. The class consists of all abelian varieties with big monodromy, i.e., such that the image of Galois representation on l-torsion points, for almost all primes l, contains the full symplectic group.
