This paper introduces monoidal (super)categories resembling the Brauer category. For all categories, we can construct bases of the hom-spaces using Brauer diagrams. These categories include the Brauer category, its deformation the BWM-category, the periplectic Brauer category, and its deformation the periplectic $q$-Brauer category but also some new exotic categories. We show that the BWM-category is the unique deformation of the Brauer category in this framework, while the periplectic Brauer category has two deformations, which are each other monoidal opposite.
In this paper we prove an analogue of Brauer's theorem for faithful objects in fusion categories. Other notions, such as the order and the index associated to faithful objects of fusion categories are also discussed. We show that the index of a faithful simple object of a fusion categories coincides with the order of the universal grading group of the fusion category.
In this paper, we introduce a rewriting theory of linear monoidal categories. Those categories are a particular case of what we will define as linear (n, p)-categories. We will also define linear (n, p)-polygraphs, a linear adapation of n-polygraphs, to present linear (n -- 1, p)-categories. We focus then on linear (3, 2)-polygraphs to give presentations of linear monoidal categories. We finally give an application of this theory in linear (3, 2)-polygraphs to prove a basis theorem on the category AOB with a new method using a rewriting property defined by van Ostroom: decreasingness.
This paper clarifies basic definitions in the universal construction of topological theories and monoidal categories. The definition of the universal construction is given for various types of monoidal categories, including rigid and symmetric. It is also explained how to set up the universal construction for non-monoidal categories. The second part of the paper explains how to associate a rigid symmetric monoidal category to a small category, a sort of the Brauer envelope of a category. The universal construction for the Brauer envelopes generalizes some earlier work of the first two authors …
The numerical invariants (global) cohomological length, (global) cohomological width, and (global) cohomological range of complexes (algebras) are introduced. Cohomological range leads to the concepts of derived bounded algebras and strongly derived unbounded algebras naturally. The first and second Brauer-Thrall type theorems for the bounded derived category of a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field are obtained. The first Brauer-Thrall type theorem says that derived bounded algebras are just derived finite algebras. The second Brauer-Thrall type theorem says that an …
We determine the decomposition numbers for the Brauer and walled Brauer algebra in characteristic zero in terms of certain polynomials associated to cap and curl diagrams (recovering a result of Martin in the Brauer case). We consider a second family of polynomials associated to such diagrams, and use these to determine projective resolutions of the standard modules. We then relate these two families of polynomials to Kazhdan-Lusztig theory via the work of Lascoux-Schützenberger and Boe, inspired by work of Brundan and Stroppel in the cap diagram case.
We describe the planar rook category, the rook category, the rook-Brauer category, and the Motzkin category in terms of generators and relations. We show that the morphism spaces of these categories have linear bases given by planar rook diagrams, rook diagrams, rook-Brauer diagrams, and Motzkin diagrams.
The main result here gives an algebra(/linear category) isomorphism between a geometrically defined subcategory $J^1_0$ of a short Brauer category $J_0$ and a certain one-parameter specialisation of the blob category $b$. That is, we prove the Conjecture in Remark 6.7 of [14]. We also define a sequence of generalisations $J^i_{i-1}$ of the category $J^1_0$. The connection of $J_0$ with the blob category inspires a search for connections also with its beautiful representation theory. Here we obtain formulae determining the non-semisimplicity condition (generalising the classical `root-of-unity'…
Let $A$ be the locally unital algebra associated to a cyclotomic oriented Brauer category over an arbitrary algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic $p\ge 0$. The category of locally finite dimensional representations of $A $ is used to give the tensor product categorification (in the general sense of Losev and Webster) for an integrable lowest weight with an integrable highest weight representation of the same level for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, where $\mathfrak g$ is a direct sum of copies of $\mathfrak {sl}_\infty$ (resp., $ \hat{\mathfrak {sl}}_p$ ) if $p=0$ (resp., $p>0$)…
We compute the group of braided tensor autoequivalences and the Brauer-Picard group of the representation category of the small quantum group $\mathfrak{u}_q(\mathfrak{g})$, where $q$ is a root of unity.
There is a natural bijection between Dyck paths and basis diagrams of the Temperley-Lieb algebra defined via tiling. Overhang paths are certain generalisations of Dyck paths allowing more general steps but restricted to a rectangle in the two-dimensional integer lattice. We show that there is a natural bijection, extending the above tiling construction, between overhang paths and basis diagrams of the Brauer algebra.
A representation of $\mathfrak{gl}(V)=V \otimes V^*$ is a linear map $μ\colon \mathfrak{gl}(V) \otimes M \to M$ satisfying a certain identity. By currying, giving a linear map $μ$ is equivalent to giving a linear map $a \colon V \otimes M \to V \otimes M$, and one can translate the condition for $μ$ to be a representation to a condition on $a$. This alternate formulation does not use the dual of $V$, and makes sense for any object $V$ in a tensor category $\mathcal{C}$. We call such objects representations of the curried general linear algebra on $V$. The currying process can be carried out fo…
We study the representation theory of the rook-Brauer algebra RB_k(x), also called the partial Brauer algebra. This algebra has a basis of "rook-Brauer" diagrams, which are Brauer diagrams that allow for the possibility of missing edges. The Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, Motzkin, rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras are all subalgebras of the rook-Brauer algebra. We prove that RB_k(n) is the centralizer algebra of the complex orthogonal group O(n) acting on the k-fold tensor power of the sum of its 1-dimensional trivial module and its n-dimensional defining module, and thus the rook-Brauer alge…
For each natural number n greater than 1, we define an algebra satisfying many properties that one might expect to hold for a Brauer algebra of type Cn. The monomials of this algebra correspond to scalar multiples of symmetric Brauer diagrams on 2n strands. The algebra is shown to be free of rank the number of such diagrams and cellular, in the sense of Graham and Lehrer.
The Brauer algebra has a basis of diagrams and these generate a monoid $H$ consisting of scalar multiples of diagrams. Following a recent paper by Kudryavtseva and Mazorchuk, we define and completely determine three types of conjugation in $H$. We are thus able to define modular characters for Brauer algebras which share many of the properties of Brauer characters defined for finite groups over a field of prime characteristic. Furthermore, we reformulate and extend the theory of ordinary characters for Brauer algebras as introduced by Ram to the case when the Brauer algebra is not semisimple.
A generalization of the Kauffman tangle algebra is given for Coxeter type Dn. The tangles involve a pole or order 2. The algebra is shown to be isomorphic to the Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebra of the same type. This result extends the isomorphism between the two algebras in the classical case, which in our set-up, occurs when the Coxeter type is of type A with index n-1. The proof involves a diagrammatic version of the Brauer algebra of type Dn in which the Temperley-Lieb algebra of type Dn is a subalgebra.
We investigate the spin-Brauer diagram algebra, denoted ${\bf SB}_n(δ)$, that arises from studying an analogous form of Schur-Weyl duality for the action of the pin group on ${\bf V}^{\otimes n} \otimes Δ$. Here ${\bf V}$ is the standard $N$-dimensional complex representation of ${\bf Pin}(N)$ and $Δ$ is the spin representation. When $δ= N$ is a positive integer, we define a surjective map ${\bf SB}_n(N) \twoheadrightarrow {\rm End}_{{\bf Pin}(N)}({\bf V}^{\otimes n} \otimes Δ)$ and show it is an isomorphism for $N \geq 2n$. We show ${\bf SB}_n(δ)$ is a cellular algebra and use cellularity to …
We construct combinatorial (involutory) Gelfand models for the following diagram algebras in the case when they are semi-simple: Brauer algebra, its partial analogue, walled Brauer algebra, its partial analogue, Temperley-Lieb algebra, its partial analogue, walled Temperley-Lieb algebra, its partial analogue, partition algebra and its Temperley-Lieb analogue.
Let $m, n\in{\mathbb N}$. In this paper we study the right permutation action of the symmetric group ${\mathfrak S}_{2n}$ on the set of all the Brauer $n$-diagrams. A new basis for the free ${\mathbb Z}$-module ${\mathfrak B}_n$ spanned by these Brauer $n$-diagrams is constructed, which yields Specht filtrations for ${\mathfrak B}_n$. For any $2m$-dimensional vector space $V$ over a field of arbitrary characteristic, we give an explicit and characteristic free description of the annihilator of the $n$-tensor space $V^{\otimes n}$ in the Brauer algebra ${\mathfrak B}_n(-2m)$. In particular, we …
The Brauer-Chen algebra is a generalization of the algebra of Brauer diagrams to arbitrary complex reflection groups, that admits a natural monodromic deformation. We determine the generic representation theory of the first non trivial quotient of this algebra. We also define natural extensions of this algebra and prove that they similarly admit natural monodromic deformations.
We give a characterisation of the idempotents of the partition monoid, and use this to enumerate the idempotents in the finite partition, Brauer and partial Brauer monoids, giving several formulae and recursions for the number of idempotents in each monoid as well as various $\mathscr R$-, $\mathscr L$- and $\mathscr D$-classes. We also apply our results to determine the number of idempotent basis elements in the finite dimensional partition, Brauer and partial Brauer algebras.
Given a fusion category $\mathcal{C}$ and an indecomposable $\mathcal{C}$-module category $\mathcal{M}$, the fusion category $\mathcal{C}^*_\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{C}$-module endofunctors of $\mathcal{M}$ is called the (Morita) dual fusion category of $\mathcal{C}$ with respect to $\mathcal{M}$. We describe tensor functors between two arbitrary duals $\mathcal{C}^*_\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{D}^*_\mathcal{N}$ in terms of data associated to $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{D}$. We apply the results to $G$-equivariantizations of fusion categories and group-theoretical fusion categories. We describe…
We determine the Jordan-Holder decomposition multiplicities of projective and cell modules over periplectic Brauer algebras in characteristic zero. These are obtained by developing the combinatorics of certain skew Young diagrams. We also establish a useful relationship with the Kazhdan-Lusztig multiplicities of the periplectic Lie superalgebra.
We define the category of partitioned binary relations and show that it contains many classical diagram categories, including categories of binary relations, maps, injective maps, partitions, (oriented) Brauer diagrams and (oriented) Temperley-Lieb diagrams. We construct a one-parameter deformation of the category of partitioned binary relations and show that it gives rise to classical one-parameter deformations of partition, Brauer and Temperley-Lieb categories. Finally, we describe a factorization of partitioned binary relations into a product of certain idempotents and pairs of usual binary…
We discuss the notion of strongly unbounded type for abelian length categories; this is closely related to the Second Brauer-Thrall Conjecture for artin algebras. A new ingredient is the space of characters in the sense of Crawley-Boevey.
We present an approach of calculating the group of braided autoequivalences of the category of representations of the Drinfeld double of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ and thus the Brauer-Picard group of $H$-$\mathrm{mod}$. We consider two natural subgroups and a subset as candidates for generators. In this article $H$ is the group algebra of a finite group $G$. As our main result we prove that any element of the Brauer-Picard group, fulfilling an additional cohomological condition, decomposes into an ordered product of our candidates. For elementary abelian groups $G$ our decomposition…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. We compute the Weyl filtration multiplicities in indecomposable tilting modules and the decomposition numbers for the general linear group over k in terms of cap diagrams under the assumption that p is bigger than the greatest hook length in the partitions involved. Then we introduce and study the rational Schur functor from a category of GL_n-modules to the category of modules for the walled Brauer algebra. As a corollary we obtain the decomposition numbers for the walled Brauer algebra when p is bigger than the greatest hook lengt…
We first give a short intrinsic, diagrammatic proof of the First Fundamental Theorem of invariant theory (FFT) for the special orthogonal group $\text{SO}_m(\mathbb{C})$, given the FFT for $\text{O}_m(\mathbb{C})$. We then define, by means of a presentation with generators and relations, an enhanced Brauer category $\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(m)$ by adding a single generator to the usual Brauer category $\mathcal{B}(m)$, together with four relations. We prove that our category $\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(m)$ is actually (and remarkably) {\em equivalent} to the category of representations of $\text{S…
We introduce stability categories for diagram algebras---analogues to Randal-Williams and Wahl's homogeneous categories. We use these to study representation stability properties of the Temperley--Lieb algebras, the Brauer algebras, and the partition algebras.
We study the periplectic Brauer algebra introduced by Moon in the study of invariant theory for periplectic Lie superalgebras. We determine when the algebra is quasi-hereditary and, for fields of characteristic zero, describe the block decomposition. To achieve this, we also develop theories of Jucys-Murphy elements, Bratteli diagrams, Murphy bases, determine when there exist quasi-hereditary 1-covers, obtain a BGG reciprocity relation and determine some decomposition multiplicities of cell modules. As an application, we determine the blocks in the category of finite dimensional weight modules…
The radical of the Brauer algebra B_f^x is known to be non-trivial when the parameter x is an integer subject to certain conditions (with respect to f). In these cases, we display a wide family of elements in the radical, which are explicitly described by means of the diagrams of the usual basis of B_f^x . The proof is by direct approach for x=0, and via classical Invariant Theory in the other cases, exploiting then the well-known representation of Brauer algebras as centralizer algebras of orthogonal or symplectic groups acting on tensor powers of their standard representation. This also give…
The diagram algebra introduced by Brauer that describes the centralizer algebra on tensor products of the natural representation of an orthogonal group has a presentation by generators and relations that only depends on the graph of type An on n nodes. Here we describe an algebra depending on an arbitrary graph of type M. We study its structure when the type is An, Dn, E6, E7, E8. We determine the representations and find the dimensions. The algebra is generically semisimple and contains the group algebra of the Coxeter type M as a subalgebra. It is a ring homomorphism of the Birman-Murakami-W…
It has been proved by Bergh and Thaule that the higher mapping cone axiom is equivalent to the higher octahedral axiom for n-angulated categories. In this note, we use homotopy cartesian diagrams to give several new equivalent statements of the higher mapping cone axiom, which are applied to explain the higher octahedral axiom.
We give a combinatorial interpretation of the determinant of a matrix as a generating function over Brauer diagrams in two different but related ways. The sign of a permutation associated to its number of inversions in the Leibniz formula for the determinant is replaced by the number of crossings in the Brauer diagram. This interpretation naturally explains why the determinant of an even antisymmetric matrix is the square of a Pfaffian.
The monoidal category of Soergel bimodules can be thought of as a categorification of the Hecke algebra of a finite Weyl group. We present this category, when the Weyl group is the symmetric group, in the language of planar diagrams with local generators and local defining relations.
