We present, to the best of our knowledge, the highest average power from a laser-driven single-cycle THz source demonstrated so far, using optical rectification in the titled pulse-front geometry in cryogenically cooled lithium niobate, pumped by a commercially available 500 W ultrafast thin-disk Yb-amplifier. We study repetition rate dependent effects in our setup at 100 kHz and 40 kHz at this high average power, revealing different optimal fluence conditions for efficient conversion. The demonstrated sources with multi-100 mW average power at these high repetition rates combine high THz pulse energies and high repetition rate and is thus ideally suited for nonlinear THz spectroscopy experiments with significantly reduced measurement times. The presented result is a first benchmark for high average power THz time domain spectroscopy systems for nonlinear spectroscopy, driven by very high average power ultrafast Yb lasers.
We present a study on THz generation in lithium niobate pumped by a powerful and versatile Yb:CaF2 laser. The unique laser system delivers transform-limited pulses of variable duration (0.38-0.65 ps) with pulse energy of up to 15 mJ at a center wavelength of 1030 nm. From theoretical investigations it is expected that those laser parameters are ideally suited for efficient THz generation. Here we present experimental results on both the conversion efficiency and the THz spectral shape for variable pump pulse durations and for different crystal temperatures down to 25 K. We experimentally verif…
We demonstrate efficient multicycle terahertz pulse generation at 14.6 THz from large-area lithium niobate crystals by using high-energy (up to 2 J) femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses. Such terahertz radiation is produced by phase-matched optical rectification in lithium niobate. Experimentally, we achieve maximal terahertz energy of 0.71 mJ with conversion efficiency of $\sim$0.04%. We also find that the effective interaction length for optimal terahertz conversion is fundamentally limited by terahertz absorption, laser pulse stretching by material dispersion, and terahertz-induced nonlinea…
We obtained an optical-to-terahertz (THz) energy conversion efficiency of 0.5% using the tilted-pulse-front technique in lithium niobate at a cryogenically cooled temperature of 100 K pumped by amplified Ti:sapphire laser pulses with ~150 fs pulse duration at 800 nm wavelength. Compared with the optimized conversion efficiency of 0.18% achieved at room temperature, we achieved more than 2.5 times enhancement in conversion efficiency upon cryogenically cooling the crystal due to reduction of THz absorption. Further improvements to the conversion efficiency can be made by optimizing the out-coup…
We experimentally investigate the limits to 800 nm-to-terahertz (THz) energy conversion in lithium niobate at room temperature driven by amplified Ti:Sapphire laser pulses with tilted-pulse-front. The influence of the pump central wavelength, pulse duration, and fluence on THz generation is studied. We achieved a high peak efficiency of 0.12% using transform limited 150 fs pulses and observed saturation of the optical to THz conversion efficiency at a fluence of 15 mJ/cm2. We experimentally identify two main limitations for the scaling of optical-to-THz conversion efficiencies: (i) the large s…
Free-space super-strong terahertz (THz) electromagnetic fields offer multifaceted capabilities for reaching extreme nonlinear THz optics, accelerating and manipulating charged particles, and realizing other fascinating applications. However, the lack of powerful solid-state THz sources with single pulse energy >1 mJ is impeding the proliferation of extreme THz applications. The fundamental challenge lies in hard to achieve high efficiency due to high intensity pumping caused crystal damage, linear absorption and nonlinear distortion induced short effective interaction length, and so on. Here, …

Key points of this demonstration include the use of a pump pulse duration of 280 fs in combination with an echelon mirror. Our results present unmatched combined characteristics and are highly competitive with the existing THz sources pumped at the mJ range. This demonstration…
Terahertz (THz) generation by optical rectification (OR) using tilted-pulse-fronts is studied. One-dimensional (1-D) and 2-D spatial models, which simultaneously account for (i) the nonlinear coupled interaction of the THz and optical radiation, (ii) angular and material dispersion, (iii) absorption, iv) self-phase modulation and (v) stimulated Raman scattering are presented. We numerically show that the large experimentally observed cascaded frequency down-shift and spectral broadening (cascading effects) of the optical pump pulse is a direct consequence of THz generation. In the presence of …
A model for THz generation by optical rectification using tilted-pulse-fronts is developed. It simultaneously accounts for (i) the spatio-temporal distortions of the optical pump pulse, (ii) the nonlinear coupled interaction of THz and optical radiation in two spatial dimensions (2-D), (iii) self-phase modulation and (iv) stimulated Raman scattering. The model is validated by quantitative agreement with experiments and analytic calculations. We show that the optical pump beam is significantly broadened in the transverse-momentum (kx) domain as a consequence of the spectral broadening caused by…
Bridging the "terahertz (THz) gap" relies upon synthesizing arbitrary waveforms in the THz domain enabling applications that require both narrow band sources for sensing and few-cycle drives for classical and quantum objects. However, realization of custom-tailored waveforms needed for these applications is currently hindered due to limited flexibility for optical rectification of femtosecond pulses in bulk crystals. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) circuits provide a versatile solution for such waveform synthesis through combining the merits of complex…
A new type of tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz (THz) source has been demonstrated, which is based on a lithium niobate plane-parallel slab with an echelon structure on its input surface. Single-cycle pulses of 1 microjoule energy and 0.30 THz central frequency have been generated with 0.05% efficiency from such a source. One order-of-magnitude increase in efficiency is expected by pumping a cryogenically cooled echelon of increased size and thickness with a Ti:sapphire laser. The use of a plane-parallel nonlinear optical crystal slab enables straightforward scaling to high THz pulse energie…
Using the tilted-pulse-intensity-front scheme, we generate single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses by optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in LiNbO3. In the THz generation setup, the condition that the image of the grating coincides with the tilted-optical-pulse front is fulfilled to obtain optimal THz beam characteristics and pump-to-THz conversion efficiency. The designed focusing geometry enables tight focus of the collimated THz beam with a spot size close to the diffraction limit, and the maximum THz electric field of 1.2 MV/cm is obtained.
High-power multicycle THz radiation is highly sought after with applications in medicine, imaging, spectroscopy, characterization and manipulation of condensed matter, and could support the development of next-generation compact laser-based accelerators with applications in electron microscopy, ultrafast X-ray sources and sub-femtosecond longitudinal diagnostics. Multicycle THz-radiation can be generated by shooting an appropriate laser through a periodically poled nonlinear crystal, e.g. lithium niobate (PPLN). Unfortunately, the manufacturing processes of PPLNs require substantially strong e…

By combining 2-D and 1-D periodic method of moments (MoM) calculations with QO terahertz (THz) time-domain measurements, we provide physical insights, numerical, and experimental demonstra…
We demonstrate THz generation using the tilted pulse front method in Lithium Niobate, driven at unprecedented high average power of more than 100 W and at 13.3 MHz repetition rate, provided by a compact amplifier-free modelocked thin-disk oscillator. The conversion efficiency was optimized with respect to pump spot size and pump pulse duration, enabling us to generate a maximum THz average power of 66 mW, which is the highest reported to date from a laser-driven, few-cycle THz source. Furthermore, we identify beam walk-off as the main obstacle that currently limits the conversion efficiency in…
The goal of this report is to study the conditions for efficient THz generation using Frequency Difference Generation principle. In particular, two CW IR beams are used together with a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal in order to generate a continuous THz wave. As a source of the IR pump beams we consider a 30W (CW) IPG Er-doped fiber-amplifier which currently is the most powerful commercial amplifier on the market. The work is motivated by application of CW sources of THz waves in high bit wireless communication applications. The amplifier will allow to mix two optically modulated I…
We present a novel method for THz generation in lithium niobate using a reflective stair-step echelon structure. The echelon produces a discretely tilted pulse front with less angular dispersion compared to a high groove-density grating. The THz output was characterized using both a 1-lens and 3-lens imaging system to set the tilt angle at room and cryogenic temperatures. Using broadband 800 nm pulses with a pulse energy of 0.95 mJ and a pulse duration of 70 fs (24 nm FWHM bandwidth, 39 fs transform limited width), we produced THz pulses with field strengths as high as 500 kV/cm and pulse ener…

We demonstrate a compact two-chip terahertz-emitting vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (TECSEL) source, which provides 1-THz output based on intracavity frequency conversion of dual-wavelength emission in a periodically-poled lithium niobate crystal. The type-I frequency conversion scheme at room temperature highly benefits from the power-scaling possibilities in a multichip cavity with intracavity powers in excess of 500 W.
Integrated optics provides a platform for the experimental implementation of highly complex and compact circuits for practical applications as well as for advances in the fundamental science of quantum optics. The lithium niobate (LN) waveguide is an important candidate for the construction of integrated optical circuits. Based on the bound state in the continuum (BIC) in a LN waveguide, we propose an efficient way to produce polarization-entangled photon pairs. In the past decade, lithium niobate (LN) crystal implementation of wave-front tilt scheme has been prevalently used, while painstaking efforts have been invested in order to achieve higher THz conversion efficiency. In this research we developed a brand new type of LN crystal possessing dual-face-cut and Brewster coupling, a…
We report on the global temporal pulse characteristics of individual harmonics in an attosecond pulse train by means of photo-electron streaking in a strong low-frequency transient. The scheme allows direct retrieval of pulse durations and first order chirp of individual harmonics without the need of temporal scanning. The measurements were performed using an intense THz field generated by tilted phase front technique in LiNbO_3 . Pulse properties for harmonics of order 23, 25 and 27 show that the individual pulse durations and linear chirp are decreasing by the harmonic order.
Electrically driven acousto-optic devices that provide beam deflection and optical frequency shifting have broad applications from pulse synthesis to heterodyne detection. Commercially available acousto-optic modulators are based on bulk materials and consume Watts of radio frequency power. Here, we demonstrate an integrated 3-GHz acousto-optic frequency shifter on thin-film lithium niobate, featuring a carrier suppression over 30 dB. Further, we demonstrate a gigahertz-spaced optical frequency comb featuring more than 200 lines over a 0.6-THz optical bandwidth by recirculating the light in an…
We report multicycle, narrowband, terahertz radiation at 14.8 THz produced by phase-matched optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in bulk lithium niobate (LiNbO$_3$) crystals. Our experiment and simulation show that the output terahertz energy greatly enhances when the input laser pulse is highly chirped, contrary to a common optical rectification process. We find this abnormal behavior is attributed to a linear electro-optic (or Pockels) effect, in which the laser pulse propagating in LiNbO$_3$ is modulated by the terahertz field it produces, and this in turn drives optical rectif…

By combining a tilted-pulse-intensity-front scheme using a LiNbO3 crystal and a chirped-pulse-beating method, we generated a narrowband intense terahertz (THz) pulse, which had a maximum electric field of more than 10 kV/cm at around 2 THz, a bandwidth of about 50 GHz,and frequency tunability from 0.5 to 2 THz. By performing THz-pump and near-infrared-probe experiments on GaAs quantum wells, we observed that the resonant excitation of the intraexcitonic 1s-2p transition induces a clear and large Autler-Townes splitting. Our time-resolved measurements show that the splitting energy observed in …

We refine the method towards extraction of sub-cycle transients in the 0.1-1 THz frequency (mm-wavelength) range from optical rectification in lithium niobate using tilted pulse fronts. Our scheme exploits previously unexplored spatio-temporal shaping of the pump pulses, resulting in highly efficient and near diffraction-limited sub-THz transients reaching 0.2 GV/m electric field strengths in free-space using only mJ-level optical ps-pulses. We address experimentally and theoretically the means to producing above-GV/m relativistic sub-THz transients with proper beam confinement and under moder…
The organic terahertz (THz) generation crystal BNA has recently gained traction as a valuable source to produce broadband THz pulses. Even when pumped with 800-nm light, thin BNA crystals can produce relatively high electric fields with frequency components out to 5 THz. However, the THz output when pumped with 800-nm light is limited by the damage threshold of the organic crystal. Here we report that the damage threshold of BNA can be significantly improved by physically bonding BNA to a high-thermal conductivity sapphire window. When pumped with 800-nm light from an amplified Ti:sapphire las…

We report on an attempt to generate highly stable continuous terahertz (THz) wave by using optical frequency comb (OFC). About 10-nm wide OFC has been generated through a deep phase modulation of a 852 nm laser line in lithium niobate crystal cavity. The multiple optical modes (side bands) of the OFC, which are equally separated from each other by the modulation frequency (=6 GHz) are taken as the frequency reference. When another semiconductor laser is frequency locked, the stability of the difference frequency between the master laser and the second laser is improved on the same order of the…
