Manipulating the atomic and electronic structure of matter with strong terahertz (THz) fields while probing the response with ultrafast pulses at x-ray free electron lasers (FELs) has offered unique insights into a multitude of physical phenomena in solid state and atomic physics. Recent upgrades of x-ray FEL facilities are pushing to much higher repetition rates, enabling unprecedented signal to noise for pump probe experiments. This requires the development of suitable THz pump sources that are able to deliver intense pulses at compatible repetition rates. Here we present a high power laser-driven THz source based on optical rectification in LiNbO3 using tilted pulse front pumping. Our source is driven by a kilowatt-level Yb:YAG amplifier system operating at 100 kHz repetition rate and employing nonlinear spectral broadening and recompression to achieve sub-100 fs pulses at 1030 nm wavelength. We demonstrate a maximum of 144 mW average THz power (1.44 uJ pulse energy), consisting of single-cycle pulses centered at 0.6 THz with a peak electric field strength exceeding 150 kV/cm. These high field pulses open up a range of possibilities for nonlinear time-resolved experiments with x-ray probing at unprecedented rates.
A high repetition rate, picosecond THz parametric amplifier (TPA) with a LiNbO3 (LN) crystal has been demonstrated in this work. At 10 kHz repetition rate, a peak power of 200 W and an average power of 12 μW have been obtained over a wide range around 2 THz; at 100 kHz repetition rate, a maximum peak power of 18 W and average power of 10.8 μW have been obtained. The parametric gain of the LN crystal was also investigated and a modified Schwarz-Maier model was introduced to interpret the experimental results.
We demonstrate THz generation using the tilted pulse front method in Lithium Niobate, driven at unprecedented high average power of more than 100 W and at 13.3 MHz repetition rate, provided by a compact amplifier-free modelocked thin-disk oscillator. The conversion efficiency was optimized with respect to pump spot size and pump pulse duration, enabling us to generate a maximum THz average power of 66 mW, which is the highest reported to date from a laser-driven, few-cycle THz source. Furthermore, we identify beam walk-off as the main obstacle that currently limits the conversion efficiency in…
We demonstrate a 13.3 MHz repetition rate, broadband THz source with milliwatt-average power, obtained by collinear optical rectification of a high-power Yb-doped thin-disk laser in the organic crystal BNA (N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline). Our source reaches a maximum THz average power of 0.95 mW with an optical-to-THz efficiency of 4e-4 and a spectral bandwidth spanning up to 6 THz at -50 dB, driven by 2.4 W average power (after an optical chopper with duty cycle of 10%), 85 fs-pulses. This high average power excitation was possible without damaging the crystal by using a diamond-heatsinked…
We present on THz generation in the two-color gas plasma scheme driven by a high-power, ultrafast fiber laser system. The applied scheme is a promising approach for scaling the THz average power but it has been limited so far by the driving lasers to repetition rates up to 1 kHz. Here, we demonstrate recent results of THz generation operating at a two orders of magnitude higher repetition rate. This results in a unprecedented THz average power of 50 mW. The development of compact, table-top THz sources with high repetition rate and high field strength is crucial for studying nonlinear response…
Nanoscale pulsed light is highly desirable in nano-integrated optics. In this letter, we obtained femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency via the strong coupling between quantum emitters (QEs) and plasmonic resonators. Our structure consists of a V-groove (VG) plasmonic resonator and a nanowire embedded with two-level QEs. The influences of the incident light intensity and QE number density on the transmission response for this hybrid system are investigated through semi-classical theory and simulation. It is found that the transmission response can be modulated to the pulse form. The…
Metallic spintronic THz emitters have become well-established for offering ultra-broadband, gap-less THz emission in a variety of excitation regimes, in combination with reliable fabrication and excellent scalability. However, so far, their potential for high-average-power excitation to reach strong THz fields at high repetition rates has not been thoroughly investigated. In this article, we explore the power scaling behavior of tri-layer spintronic emitters using an Yb-fiber excitation source, delivering an average power of 18.5 W at 400 kHz repetition rate, temporally compressed to a pulse d…
We report the coherent generation and detection of terahertz (THz) pulses covering the bandwidth of 0.1-9 THz in a high repetition rate, low pulse energy laser system. In this work we demonstrate the application and evaluation of solid-state biased coherent detection in combination with a spintronic emitter. This combination was used to generate and detect THz pulses in a time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) setup and tested on bulk nonlinear crystals. These results establish a new promising candidate to extend the possibilities for compact, broadband THz TDS systems driven by high repetition rate l…

Dual-comb generation from a single laser cavity provides a simple and high-performance solution to time sampling applications. We demonstrate a compact single-cavity dual-comb laser operating at gigahertz repetition rates and high repetition rate differences up to more than 100 kHz with sub-100 fs pulse duration. The single cavity approach leads to passive common noise suppression resulting in ultra-low relative timing jitter and fully resolvable comb lines in free-running operation. We showcase the laser performance with two application demonstrations: (a) time-domain spectroscopy of acetylen…
On the basis of an energy-recovery linac, a terahertz (THz) source with kilowatts average power is proposed in Shanghai, which will serve as an effective tool in material and biological sciences. By using three dimensional, time-dependent numerical modeling of GENESIS in combination with paraxial optical propagation code (OPC), the THz oscillator performances, the detuning effects, and the tolerance requirements on the electron beam, the u…

Here, in the case of continuous wave incidence, the femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency are achieved in the transmission system consisting of a rectangular cavity, a V-groove (VG) cavity and a nanowire embedded with quantum emitters (QEs). The generation mechanism of the ultra-short pulses with high repetition frequency is elucidated by semi-classical Dicke model. We present a high-power source of broadband terahertz radiation covering the whole THz spectral region (0.1-30 THz). The two-color gas plasma generation process is driven by a state-of-the-art Ytterbium fiber chirped pulse amplification system based on coherent combination of 16 rod-type amplifiers. Prior to the THz generation, the pulses are spectrally broadened in a multi-pass-cell and compressed to 37 fs with a pulse-energy of 1.3 mJ at a repetition rate of 500 kHz. A gas-jet scheme has been employed for the THz generation, increasing the efficiency of the process to 0.1%. The air-biased-co…
Transient field-resolved spectroscopy enables studies of ultrafast dynamics in molecules, nanostructures, or solids with sub-cycle resolution, but previous work has so far concentrated on extracting the dielectric response at frequencies below 50\,THz. Here, we implemented transient field-resolved reflectometry at 50-100\,THz (3-6\,$μ$m) with MHz repetition rate employing 800\,nm few-cycle excitation pulses that provide sub-10\,fs temporal resolution. The capabilities of the technique are demonstrated in studies of ultrafast photorefractive changes in the semiconductors Ge and GaAs, where the …
Optical injection locking is implemented to faithfully transfer the phase noise of a dissipative Kerr microresonator soliton comb in addition to the amplification of the Kerr comb. Unlike Er-doped fiber and semiconductor optical amplifiers, the optical injection locking amplifies the comb mode without degrading the optical signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, we show that the residual phase noise of the optical injection locking is sufficiently small to transfer the relative phase noise of comb modes (equivalent to the repetition frequency) of low phase noise Kerr combs, concluding that the opt…
The recent demonstration of a terahertz (THz) molecular gas laser pumped by a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser (QCL) has opened up new perspectives for this family of sources, traditionally relying on CO2-laser pumping. A so far open question concerning QCL-pumped THz molecular lasers (MLs) is related to their spectral purity. Indeed, assessing their frequency/phase noise is crucial for a number of applications potentially exploiting these sources as local oscillators. Here this question is addressed by reporting the measurement of the frequency noise power spectral density (PSD) of a THz ML…
Octave-wide frequency combs in microresonators are essential for self-referencing. However, it is difficult for the small-size and high-repetition-rate microresonators to achieve perfect soliton modelocking over the broad frequency range due to the detrimental impact of dispersion. Here we examine the stability of the soliton states consisting of one hundred modes in silicon-nitride microresonators with the one-THz free spectral range. We report the coexistence of fast and slow solitons in a narrow detuning range, which is surrounded on either side by the breather states. We decompose the brea…
Selective enhancement of coherent optical phonons in Bi-Sb mixed crystals has been performed using terahertz (THz) rate pulse trains generated by spatial phase modulation of femtosecond pulse with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. The profile of the shaped pulse train has a flat-toped shape. The Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb vibrations can be enhanced and canceled selectively for pulse trains with a suitable repetition rate.
Within a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO), the inherent synchronism between the pump and the resonating signal is the magic to partly transfer the coherence property of the pump to the signal. In our demonstration, Vernier effect is observed within a femtosecond SPOPO by simply detuning the FSR of the cavity, generating signal pulses at tunable repetition rate from several GHz to 1 THz with a maximum 22.58 nm full width half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth supporting 160 fs pulses covering the C- and L-bands of the telecom wavelength region. This technique offers a simple me…
We report an integrated all-optical radio frequency spectrum analyzer based on a ~ 4cm long doped silica glass waveguide, with a bandwidth greater than 2.5 THz. We use this device to characterize the intensity power spectrum of ultrahigh repetition rate mode-locked lasers at repetition rates up to 400 GHz, and observe dynamic noise related behavior not observable with other techniques.
We demonstrate a compact source of energetic and phase-locked multi-terahertz pulses at a repetition rate of 190 kHz. Difference frequency mixing of the fundamental output of an Yb:KGW amplifier with the idler of an optical parametric amplifier in GaSe and LiGaS2 crystals yields a passively phase-locked train of waveforms tunable between 12 and 42 THz. The shortest multi-terahertz pulses contain 1.8 oscillation cycles within the intensity FWHM. Pulse energies of up to 0.16 μJ and peak electric fields of 13 MV/cm are achieved. Electro-optic sampling reveals a phase stability better than 0.1 $π$…
Terahertz (THz)-based electron manipulation has recently been shown to hold tremendous promise as a technology for manipulating and driving the next-generation of compact ultrafast electron sources. Here, we demonstrate an ultrafast electron diffractometer with THz-driven pulse compression. The electron bunches from a conventional DC gun are compressed by a factor of 10 and reach a duration of ~180 fs (FWHM) with 10,000 electrons/pulse at a 1 kHz repetition rate. The resulting ultrafast electron source is used in a proof-of-principle experiment to probe the photoinduced dynamics of single-crys…
Phase-stable electromagnetic pulses in the THz frequency range offer several unique capabilities in time-resolved spectroscopy. However, the diversity of their application is limited by the covered spectral bandwidth. In particular, the upper frequency limit of photoconductive emitters - the most widespread technique in THz spectroscopy - reaches only up to 7 THz in regular transmission mode due to the absorption by infrared-active optical phonons. Here, we present ultra-broadband (extending up to 70 THz) THz emission from Au implanted Ge emitter which is compatible with a fibre laser operatin…

Dual THz comb spectroscopy has the potential to be used as universal THz spectroscopy with high spectral resolution, high spectral accuracy, and broad spectral coverage; however, the requirement for dual stabilized femtosecond lasers hampers its versatility due to the bulky size, high complexity, and high cost. We here report the first demonstration of dual THz comb spectroscopy using a single free-running fibre laser. By tuning the cavity-loss-dependent gain profile with an intracavity Lyot filter together with precise management of the cavity length and dispersion, dual-wavelength pulsed lig…
Amplified bursts of laser pulses are sought for various machining, deposition, spectroscopic and strong-field applications. Standard frequency- and time-domain techniques for pulse division become inadequate when intraburst repetition rates reach the terahertz (THz) range as a consequence of inaccessible spectral resolution, requirement for interferometric stability, and collapse of the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) concept due to the loss of usable bandwidth needed for safe temporal stretching. Avoiding the burst amplification challenge and resorting to a lossy post-division of an isolate…
Development of ultrashort pulse sources has had an immense impact on condensed-matter physics, biomedical imaging, high-field physics, frequency metrology, telecommunications, nonlinear optics, and molecular spectroscopy. Although numerous advancements of such sources have been made, it remains a challenge to create a highly compact, robust platform capable of producing femtosecond pulses over a wide range of wavelengths, durations, and repetition rates. Recent observations of frequency comb generation via cascaded parametric oscillation in microresonators11 suggest a path for achieving this g…
We construct a terahertz time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) system based on photoconductive antenna (PCA). A 800 nm Ti sapphire femtosecond laser with 80 MHz repetition rate provides the pump and probe laser pulse, which has a 45 fs pulse width (as short as 15 fs is available) and as much as 400 mW power. Two commercial PCAs with 34 um and 6 um gap size are used as the emitter and receiver, respectively. We characterize this system by measuring its absolute radiated THz power, spectral bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), dynamic range and beam profile at the focal plane. We further analyze…
Metals have been studied as terahertz sources for decades. Recent research has shown the potential of metals in generating extremely high THz pulse energy excited by intense laser pulses. To avoid the metal surface debris caused by laser pulses, here, we report the results of the broadband terahertz wave emission from a flowing liquid metal line excited by sub-picosecond laser pulses. The THz signal emitted from the liquid gallium line shows stronger field with broader bandwidth comparing with the signal from water under the identical optical excitation conditions. Our preliminary study sugges…

We present a novel laser mode-locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse sha…
