Ultra-short pulses with high repetition frequency have great application prospects in the field of nano-optics. Here, in the case of continuous wave incidence, the femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency are achieved in the transmission system consisting of a rectangular cavity, a V-groove (VG) cavity and a nanowire embedded with quantum emitters (QEs). The generation mechanism of the ultra-short pulses with high repetition frequency is elucidated by semi-classical Dicke model. Attribute to the presence of the two-level QEs, the field amplitude in plasmonic resonator is oscillating with time, resulting in the transmittance of the system behave as the form of pulse oscillation. Moreover, The pulse repetition frequency and extinction ratio can be freely controlled by the incident light intensity and QEs number density to obtain the required ultra-short pulses at nanoscale, which also has potential applications in optical computing.
Nanoscale pulsed light is highly desirable in nano-integrated optics. In this letter, we obtained femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency via the strong coupling between quantum emitters (QEs) and plasmonic resonators. Our structure consists of a V-groove (VG) plasmonic resonator and a nanowire embedded with two-level QEs. The influences of the incident light intensity and QE number density on the transmission response for this hybrid system are investigated through semi-classical theory and simulation. It is found that the transmission response can be modulated to the pulse form. The…
Ultrafast lasers generating high repetition rate ultrashort pulses through various mode-locking methods can benefit many important applications including communication, materials processing, astronomical observation, etc. For decades, mode-locking based on dissipative four-wave-mixing (DFWM) has been fundamental in producing pulses with repetition rates on the order of gigahertz (GHz), where multiwavelength comb filters and long nonlinear components are elemental. Recently, this method has been improved using filter-driven DFWM, which exploits both the filtering and nonlinear features of silic…
We report on an environmentally stable, Yb-doped, all-normal dispersion, mode-locked fibre laser that is capable of creating broadband pulses with ultra-low repetition rates. Specifically, through careful positioning of fibre sections in an all-PM-fibre cavity mode-locked with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, we achieve stable pulse trains with repetition rates as low as 506 kHz. The pulses have several nanojules of energy and are compressible down to ultrashort (< 500 fs) durations.
We report that femtosecond surface plasmon polariton pulses can propagate along a metal-dielectric waveguide and that they can be modulated on the femtosecond timescale by direct ultrafast optical excitation of the metal, thereby offering unprecedented terahertz plasmonic bandwidth - a key missing component in the development of surface plasmons as information carriers for next generation nanophotonic devices.
We propose several planar layouts of ultra-compact plasmonic waveguide modulators that utilize alternative CMOS-compatible materials. The modulation is efficiently achieved by tuning the carrier concentration in a transparent conducting oxide layer, thereby tuning the waveguide either in plasmonic resonance or off-resonance. Resonance significantly increases the absorption coefficient of the plasmonic waveguide, which enables larger modulation depth. We show that an extinction ratio of 86 dB/um can be achieved, allowing for a 3-dB modulation depth in less than one micron at the telecommunicati…
We report a measurement on the temporal response of a plasmonic antenna at the femtosecond time scale. The antenna consists of a square array of nanometer-size gold rods. We find that the far-field dispersion of light reflected from the plasmonic antenna is less than that of a 1.2 mm thick glass slide. Assuming a simple oscillating dipole model this implies that the near-field of the antenna may be used as an electron switch that responds faster than 20 fs. Alternatively, ultrafast electron diffraction may be used to investigate the near-field dynamics of the plasmonic antenna.
We demonstrate the operation of an ultra low repetition rate, high peak power, picosecond diode pumped Nd:YVO4 passively mode locked laser oscillator. Repetition rates even below 1 MHz were achieved with the use of a new design multiple-pass cavity and a semiconductor saturable absorber. Long term stable operation at 1.2 MHz, pulse duration of 16.3 ps and average output power of 470 mW corresponding to 24 KW peak power pulses is reported. This is, to our knowledge, the lowest repetition rate high peak power pulses ever generated directly from a picosecond laser resonator without cavity dumping…
We explore the nonlinear response of plasmonic materials driven by ultrashort pulses of electromagnetic radiation with temporal duration of few femtoseconds and high peak intensity. Plasmonic nanostructures hold promise for the realization of ultra-thin sub-wavelength devices, reducing power operating thresholds and enabling nonlinear optical functionality in metasurfaces. However, this promise is substantially undercut by absorption introduced by resistive losses, causing the metasurface community to turn away from plasmonics in favour of alternative material platforms (e.g., dielectrics) that provide weaker field enhancement, but more tolerable losses. Here, we report a plasmonic metasurface with a quality-factor (Q-factor) of 2340 in the telecommunication C band by exp…
We experimentally demonstrate that the transmission of a 1030~nm, 1.3~ps laser beam of 100 mJ energy through fog increases when its repetition rate increases to the kHz range. Due to the efficient energy deposition by the laser filaments in the air, a shockwave ejects the fog droplets from a substantial volume of the beam, at a moderate energy cost. This process opens prospects for applications requiring the transmission of laser beams through fogs and clouds.
The concept of optical phase discontinuities is applied to the design and demonstration of aberration-free planar lenses and axicons, comprising a phased array of ultrathin subwavelength spaced optical antennas. The lenses and axicons consist of radial distributions of V-shaped nanoantennas that generate respectively spherical wavefronts and non-diffracting Bessel beams at telecom wavelengths. Simulations are also presented to show that our aberration-free designs are applicable to high numerical aperture lenses such as flat microscope objectives.
Plasmonic color filters employing a single optically-thick nanostructured metal layer have recently generated considerable interest as an alternative to colorant-based color filtering technologies, due to their reliability, ease of fabrication, high color tunability. The present work reports, for the first time, a novel plasmonic subtractive color filtering scheme that exploits the counter-intuitive phenomenon of extraordinary low transmission (ELT) through an ultrathin nanostruct…
We propose ultra-broadband reflective and absorptive polarizers in the visible range using multi-scaled Ag nano wire-slit arrays. The nano arrays can be tuned from reflective to absorptive by incorporating Ag wires/strips with different lengths/widths. The ultra-broadband nature of the absorptive array, with averaged absorption as high as ~80%, is due to the collective excitations of plasmonic resonances in the Ag wires/strips with different length scales. The Ag nano wire-slit arrays are realized experimentally by using a simple two-times shadowing vapor deposition method. They exhibit broadb…
For integrated optical devices, realistic utilization of the superior wave-matter interaction offered by plasmonics is typically impeded by optical losses, which increase rapidly with mode volume reduction. Although coupled-mode plasmonic structures has demonstrated effective alleviation of the loss-confinement trade-off, stringent symmetry requirements must be enforced for such reduction to prevail. In this work, we report an asymmetric plasmonic waveguide that is not only capable of guiding subwavelength optical mode with long-range propagation, but is also unrestricted by structural, materi…

The optical response of the solid (liquid) Bi nanospheres is ruled by localized polaritonic (plasmonic) resonances tunable by controlling the diamet…
Quasi-crystals are intriguing as they exhibit rotational symmetry and long range ordering but lack translational symmetry. 2-dimensional metal-dielectric patterns are interesting to make use of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mediated local field enhancement and for near dispersionless SPP modes. In plasmonic crystals, the orientation and periodicity of the pattern dictate the polarization response and the discrete plasmon resonances while the interfaces define the plasmon dispersion. However, unique properties of plasmonic quasicrystals lead to polarization independence, designable k-space an…

Plasmonic lasers (spasers) generate coherent surface-plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) and could be realized at subwavelength dimensions in metallic cavities for applications in nanoscale optics. Plasmonic cavities are also utilized for terahertz quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs), which are the brightest available solid-state sources of terahertz radiation. A long standing challenge for spasers is their poor coupling to the far-field radiation. Unlike conventional lasers that could produce directional beams, spasers have highly divergent radiation patterns due to their subwavelength apertures. Here, we th…
Strong-coupling of monolayer metal dichalcogenide semiconductors with light offers encouraging prospects for realistic exciton devices at room temperature. One of the technical barriers impeding the wide applications of integrated photonic circuits is the lack of ultracompact, high speed, broadband electro-optical (EO) modulators, which up-convert electronic signals into high bit-rate photonic data. In addition to direct modulation of lasers, EO modulators can be classified into (i) phase modulation based on EO effect or free-carrier injection, or (ii) absorption modulation based on Franz-Keldysh effect or quantum-confined Stark effect. Due to the poor EO properties of regular materials, a conventional EO modulator has a very large footprint. Bas…
