We construct a terahertz time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) system based on photoconductive antenna (PCA). A 800 nm Ti sapphire femtosecond laser with 80 MHz repetition rate provides the pump and probe laser pulse, which has a 45 fs pulse width (as short as 15 fs is available) and as much as 400 mW power. Two commercial PCAs with 34 um and 6 um gap size are used as the emitter and receiver, respectively. We characterize this system by measuring its absolute radiated THz power, spectral bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), dynamic range and beam profile at the focal plane. We further analyze the noise sources of the THz-TDS system and specifically discuss the possibility to improve the DR and SNR. In addition, using this system, we study the response of the PCA to various parameters, such as laser power, biased voltage, beam spot's location and laser's polarization.
Photoconductive antennas and photomixers are very promising sources of terahertz radiation that is widely used for spectroscopy, characterisation and imaging of biological objects, deep space studies, scanning of surfaces and detection of potentially hazardous substances. These antennas are compact and allow generation of both ultrabroadband pulse and tunable continuous wave terahertz signal at room temperatures, without a need of high-power optical sources. However, such antennas have relatively low energy conversion efficiency of femtosecond laser pulses or two close pump wavelengths (photom…
We numerically describe the physical mechanism underlying the terahertz photoconductive antenna (PCA) by the finite-difference time-domain method in three-dimension. The feature of our approach is that the multi-physical phenomena happening in the PCA, such as light-matter interaction, photo-excited carrier dynamics and full-wave propagation of the THz radiation, are considered and embodied in the simulation. The method has been verified by comparing with existing commercial softwares. In addition, we use this simulation tool to characterize the parameter-dependent performance of a PCA,thereby…
Improving terahertz(THz) radiation power and/or optics-to-THz efficiency of the photoconductive antenna(PCA) is widely recognized as one of the most attractive and challenging missions in THz community. In this work, the design of a THz PCA with nano-crossfinger structure in the active region is proposed. The THz radiation properties of this PCA was demonstrated by finite-difference-time-domain method based on full-wave model. As a comparison, the PCA with nano-finger structure that promises enhanced THz radiation than conventional PCA was also analyzed numerically. The results indicate that t…
Graphene, owing to its ability to support plasmon polariton waves in the terahertz frequency range, enables the miniaturization of antennas to allow wireless communications among nanosystems. One of the main challenges in the demonstration of graphene antennas is finding suitable terahertz sources to feed the antenna. This paper estimates the performance of a graphene RF plasmonic micro-antenna fed with a photoconductive source. The terahertz source is modeled and, by means of a full-wave EM solver, the radiated power of the device is estimated with respect to material, laser illumination and …
The common terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) based on photoconductive antenna (PCA) needs two separate PCA chips. One PCA works as an emitter, and the other works as a receiver. For a reflection-type measurement, the technique called 'attenuated total reflection' usually is needed to enhance the reflection sensitivity. These make the system bulk and complicated for the reflection-type measurement. In this paper, we propose a novel THz-TDS endoscope that is specifically designed for reflection-type measurement. This THz-TDS endoscope is benefited from an integrated photoconductive an…
The emission properties of terahertz(THz) photoconductive antenna (PCA) have been numerically studied by three-dimensional finite-difference-time-domain method based on the full-wave model. The dependence of the THz radiation on various parameters, such as laser power, bias voltage, substrate's material, pulse duration of the laser, beam spot's size, dimension of the antenna, were comprehensively simulated and analyzed. This work, on one hand, reveals the internal relationship between the THz radiation of a PCA and the involved parameters, so that one can have a better understanding of the PCA…
The enhanced terahertz radiation from a new photoconductive antenna (PCA) has been predicted by numerical simulation. Different from the conventional PCA, the proposed PCA has electrodes with sawtooth structures on the edge, which will introduce stronger localized bias field than common electrode (e.g. strip-line structure). In addition, the elliptical beam of the laser source is used to illuminate the sawtooth structure of the PCA, so that the effective region of the terahertz excitation is enlarged and higher laser power can be applied before saturation effect occurs. The design of the propo…
Advanced nanophotonics penetrates into other areas of science and technology, ranging from applied physics to biology and resulting in many fascinating cross-disciplinary applications. It has been recently demonstrated that suitably engineered light-matter interactions at the nanoscale can overcome the limitations of today's terahertz (THz) photoconductive antennas, making them one step closer to many practical implications. Here we push forward this concept by comprehensive numerical optimization and experimental investigation of a log-periodic THz photoconductive antenna coupled to a silver …
We report here fabrication of interdigitated photoconductive antenna (iPCA) terahertz (THz) emitters based on plasmonic electrode design. Novel design of this iPCA enables it to work without microlens array focusing, which is otherwise required for photo excitation of selective photoconductive regions to avoid the destructive interference of emitted THz radiation from oppositely biased regions. Benefit of iPCA over single active region PCA is that photo excitation can be done at larger area, hence avoiding the saturation effected at higher optical excitation density. The emitted THz radiation …
A multi-element interdigitated photoconductive emitter for broadband THz polarization rotation is proposed and experimentally verified. The device consists of separate pixels for the emission of horizontally and vertically polarized THz radiation. The broadband (0.3-5.0THz) nature of the device is demonstrated, and the polarization angle of the generated far-field THz radiation is shown to be readily controlled by varying the relative bias voltage applied to the horizontally and vertically emitting pixels. The device is scalable in design, and with its simple method of polarization rotation it…
The terahertz current generated by a photoconductive device (PCD) saturates as the power of the input optical pump is increased. This behavior is induced by various screening effects that stem from the interactions between electromagnetic (EM) fields and semiconductor carriers. In this work, these screening effects are numerically analyzed for the first time using a fully-coupled multiphysics approach. Unlike the previously developed simulation frameworks, this approach rigorously models the nonlinear coupling between the EM fields and the carriers and therefore is capable of accounting for th…
In this paper, we report on an approach for shaping the spectra of THz pulse generation in photoconductive antennas (PCAs) by frequency-dependent impedance modulation. We introduce a theoretical model describing the THz pulse generation in PCAs and accounting for impedances of the photoconductor and of the antenna. In order to showcase an impact of frequency-dependent impedance modulation on the spectra of THz pulse generation, we applied this model to simulating broadband PCAs with log-spiral topology. Finally, we fabricated two different log-spiral PCAs and characterized them experimentally …
Terahertz time domain spectroscopy employing free-space radiation has frequently been used to probe the elementary excitations of low-dimensional systems. The diffraction limit blocks its use for the in-plane study of individual laterally defined nanostructures, however. Here, we demonstrate a planar terahertz-frequency plasmonic circuit in which photoconductive material is monolithically integrated with a two-dimensional electron system. Plasmons with a broad spectral range (up to ~400 GHz) are excited by injecting picosecond-duration pulses, generated and detected by a photoconductive semico…
Subwavelength-slotted parallel plate waveguides exhibit a localized electromagnetic resonance bound to the slits at a frequency slightly below the transverse electric cutoff [R. Merlin, Phys. Rev. X 2, 031015 (2012)]. The resonance is long-lived and, as opposed to the vanishingly small transmission shown by a single sub-wavelength aperture, it gives perfect transmission for perfectly-conducting plates. We show that the aperture-supported resonances of a pair of slotted copper plates have long lifetimes at THz frequencies. Finite element method calculations show that these bound resonances can …
We demonstrate a single-shot terahertz spectrometer consisting of a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a microbolometer focal plane array. The spectrometer is simple to use and can measure terahertz field autocorrelations and spectral power with no moving parts and no ultrashort-pulsed laser. It can effectively detect radiation at 10$\sim$40 THz when tested with a thermal source. It can be also used to measure the complex refractive index of a sample material. In principle, it can characterize both laser-based and non-laser-based terahertz sources and potentially cover 1$\sim$10 THz with…
We report on an attempt to generate highly stable continuous terahertz (THz) wave by using optical frequency comb (OFC). About 10-nm wide OFC has been generated through a deep phase modulation of a 852 nm laser line in lithium niobate crystal cavity. The multiple optical modes (side bands) of the OFC, which are equally separated from each other by the modulation frequency (=6 GHz) are taken as the frequency reference. When another semiconductor laser is frequency locked, the stability of the difference frequency between the master laser and the second laser is improved on the same order of the…
Speckle patterns observed in coherent optical imaging reflect important characteristic information of the scattering object. To capture speckle patterns, angular resolved or oblique illumination geometries are usually employed in combination with Rayleigh statistical models. We present a portable and handheld 2-channel polarization-sensitive imaging instrument to directly resolve terahertz (THz) speckle fields in a collocated telecentric back-scattering geometry. The polarization state of the THz light is measured using two orthogonal photoconductive antennas and can be presented in the form o…
Continuous Wave (CW) Terahertz spectroscopy enabled by photomixing is a promising high precision spectroscopic tool for the examination of a wide variety of samples including biological, chemical, and solid state. However, often it would be of interest to examine isolated samples free from bulk effects that broaden spectral features. In this form samples with low concentrations of absorbers have a reduced cross section making coupling to an external driving field a challenge. By utilising THz metamaterials one can borrow the concepts of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy to confine and concen…

We present a new instrumentation and calibration procedure for terahertz time-domain spectroscopic ellipsometry (THz-TDSE) that is a newly established characterization technique. The experimental setup is capable of providing arbitrary angle of incidence in the range of $15^\circ$--$85^\circ$ in the reflection geometry, and with no need for realignment. The setup is also configurable easily into transmission geometry. For this setup, we successfully used hollow core photonic band gap fiber with no pre-chirping in order to deliver a femtosecond laser into a THz photoconductive antenna detector,…

We report on the first direct measurement of the emission character of quantum cascade laser based frequency combs, using intensity autocorrelation. The correlation technique is based on fast electro-optic sampling, with a bandwidth optimized to match the emission spectra of the comb laser, centered around 2.5~THz. We find the output light to be amplitude and frequency modulated at the same time, with intensity modulation depth as high as 90\%, occuring on timescales as short as few picoseconds. We compare these findings with intensity autocorrelation measurements of pulsed Terahertz light ori…
The 1-10 terahertz (THz) spectral window is emerging as a key region for plenty of applications, requiring not yet available continuous-wave room-temperature THz spectrometers with high spectral purity and ultra-broad tunability. In this regard, the spectral features of stabilized telecom sources can actually be transferred to the THz range by difference frequency generation, considering that the width of the accessible THz spectrum generally scales with the area involved in the nonlinear interaction. For this reason, in this paper we extensively discuss the role of Lithium Niobate (LN) channe…
Highly sensitive terahertz (THz) sensors for a myriad of applications are rapidly evolving. A widespread sensor concept is based on the detection of minute resonance frequency shifts due to a targeted specimen in the sensors environment. Therefore, cutting-edge high resolution continuous wave (CW) THz spectrometers provide very powerful tools to investigate the sensors' performances. However, unpredictable yet non negligible frequency drifts common to state-of-the-art CW THz spectrometers limit the sensors' accuracy for ultra-high precision sensing and metrology. Here, we overcome this deficie…
We report the first coherent excitation of intramolecular vibrational modes via the nonlinear interaction of a TeraHertz (THz) light field with molecular liquids. A terahertz-terahertz-Raman pulse sequence prepares the coherences with a broadband, high-energy, (sub)picosecond terahertz pulse, that are then measured in a terahertz Kerr effect spectrometer via phase-sensitive, heterodyne detection with an optical pulse. The spectrometer reported here has broader terahertz frequency coverage, and an increased sensitivity relative to previously reported terahertz Kerr effect experiments. Vibration…
We demonstrate a convenient and fast method to measure the spectrally resolved far-fields of multimode terahertz quantum cascade lasers by combining a microbolometer focal plane array with an FTIR spectrometer. Far-fields of fundamental TM0 and higher lateral order TM1 modes of multimode Fabry-Pérot type lasers have been distinguished, which very well fit to the results obtained by a 3D finite-element simulation. Furthermore, multimode random laser cavities have been investigated, analyzing the contribution of each single laser mode to the total far-field. The presented method is thus an impor…
Terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy is a powerful method that allows one to measure the ultrafast dynamics of polarization, current, or magnetization in a material based on THz emission from the material. However, the practical implementation of this method can be challenging, and can result in significant errors in the reconstruction of the quantity of interest. Here, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate a rigorous method of signal reconstruction in THz emission spectroscopy, and describe the main experimental and theoretical sources of reconstruction error. We identify the linea…
Dual-comb generation from a single laser cavity provides a simple and high-performance solution to time sampling applications. We demonstrate a compact single-cavity dual-comb laser operating at gigahertz repetition rates and high repetition rate differences up to more than 100 kHz with sub-100 fs pulse duration. The single cavity approach leads to passive common noise suppression resulting in ultra-low relative timing jitter and fully resolvable comb lines in free-running operation. We showcase the laser performance with two application demonstrations: (a) time-domain spectroscopy of acetylen…
We have performed terahertz time-domain magnetospectroscopy by combining a rapid scanning terahertz time-domain spectrometer based on the electronically coupled optical sampling method with a table-top mini-coil pulsed magnet capable of producing magnetic fields up to 30 T. We demonstrate the capability of this system by measuring coherent cyclotron resonance oscillations in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs and interference-induced terahertz transmittance modifications in a magnetoplasma in lightly doped n-InSb.
The lack of coherent room-temperature sources in the whole terahertz spectral window (0.3-10 THz) has significantly hampered the growth of scientific and technological applications in this range. Among them, high-precision frequency measurements of molecular transitions play a central role but remain an open challenge. Here, room-temperature generation and detection of continuous-wave, broadly tunable, narrow-linewidth THz radiation are presented, and their application to high-resolution spectroscopy in the broad 1-7.5 THz spectral range is demonstrated. This result has been achieved by implem…
Optical frequency combs generated by multiple four-wave mixing of two stabilized single-frequency lasers in optical fibers are proposed for use as high precision frequency markers, calibration of astrophysical spectrometers and metrology. Use of highly nonlinear and photonic crystal fibers with very short lengths and small group velocity dispersion, combined with energy and momentum conservation required by the parametric generation, assures negligible phase mismatch between comb frequencies. In contrast to combs from mode-locked lasers or microcavities, the absence of a resonator allows large…
In this paper we present the outcome of the first international comparison in the terahertz frequency range among three different kinds of spectrometers. A Fourier-Transform infrared spectrometer, a Vector Network Analyzer and a Time-Domain Spectrometer have been employed for measuring the complex refractive index of three travelling standards made of selected dielectric materials in order to offer a wide enough range of parameters to be measured. The three spectrometers have been compared in terms of measurement capability and uncertainty.
We present a rapid-scan, time-domain terahertz spectrometer employing femtosecond Er:fiber technology and an acousto-optic delay with attosecond precision, enabling scanning of terahertz transients over a 12.4 ps time window at a waveform refresh rate of 36 kHz, and a signal-to-noise ratio of $1.7 \times 10^5/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$. Our approach enables real-time monitoring of dynamic THz processes at unprecedented speeds, which we demonstrate through rapid 2D thickness mapping of a spinning teflon disc at a precision of $10\,\rm nm/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$. The compact, all-optical design ensures alignment-fre…
We report enhanced broadband Terahertz (THz) generation and detailed characterization from the interaction of femtosecond two colour laser pulses with thin transparent dielectric tape target in ambient air. The proposed source is easy to implement, exhibits excellent scalability with laser energy. Spectral characterization using Fourier transform spectrometer reveals yield enhancement of more than 150 % in the THz region of 0.1 - 10 THz with respect to conventional two-colour laser plasma source in ambient air. Further, the source spectrum extends up to 40 THz with an enhancement of flux > 30 …
We present a modified $8f$ geometry for time domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy (TDTS) experiments. We show, through simulations and data, that a simple rearranging of the off-axis parabolic mirrors, which are typically used to focus and direct THz radiation in TDTS experiments, results in a nearly 40% reduction in the THz focal spot diameter. This effect stems from significant reduction of the principle optical aberrations which are enhanced in the conventional $8f$ geometry but partially compensated in the modified $8f$ experimental setup. We compare data from our home-built TDTS spectromet…
The achievable instrument sensitivity is a critical parameter for the continued development of THz applications. Techniques such as Cavity-Enhanced Techniques and Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy have not yet been employed at THz frequency due to the difficulties to construct a high finesse Fabry-Pérot cavity. Here, we describe such a THz resonator based on a low-loss oversized corrugated waveguide with highly reflective photonic mirrors obtaining a finesse above 3000 around 620 GHz. These components enable a Fabry-Perot THz Absorption Spectrometer with an equivalent interaction length of one kil…
With an MBE technique, a Si/Ge heterostructures are prepared containing layers of nanostructured Ge with quantum dots of size of several nanometers. The effective conductivity of the layers is determined by a quasioptical terahertz-subterahertz coherent source BWO spectroscopy. The conductivity is found to be strongly enhanced compared with the conductivity of bulk germanium. Possible microscopic mechanisms responsible for the enhancement will be discussed. Application of BWO spectrometers for obtaining precise quantitative information on of dielectric properties at THz-subTHz frequencies of s…
