Broadband and high-resolution spectroscopy in the visible and ultraviolet is central to advances in multiple fields, including fundamental quantum physics, biology, atmospheric science and astronomy. Traditionally, these measurements are performed with grating or Fourier-transform spectrometers using incoherent light sources. Leveraging coherent light enables powerful frequency-comb-based techniques, but is limited by the technical complexity of efficiently generating broad spectral bandwidths from relatively narrowband and spectrally distant laser sources. Current visible dual-comb spectrometers require implicit compromises between optical bandwidth, experimental simplicity, and acquisition speed. In this work, we introduce a simple and efficient dual-comb spectrometer that converts robust Er:fiber frequency combs from the near-infrared to the ultraviolet and visible with thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) nanophotonic waveguides. Using real-time signal processing, we retrieve coherently averaged dual-comb spectra over nearly 120 THz of simultaneous bandwidth in the visible with 100 MHz spectral resolution. With these capabilities, we measure the broadband absorption spectrum of molecular iodine (I2), demonstrating the broadest visible spectral coverage of a dual-comb spectrometer to date. Additional measurements of NO2, atomic rubidium, and atomic sodium further illustrate the achievable combination of spectroscopic bandwidth, resolution, and intrinsic frequency accuracy. Our results demonstrate the powerful integration of low-power frequency combs, nonlinear nanophotonics, and digital signal processing to enable a compact, efficient and versatile approach to high-resolution mapping of complex absorption spectra across 500 THz in the UV-visible and near-infrared spectral regions for multiple applications beyond the research lab
In this paper, we have investigated the interplay between the second and third-order nonlinearities in lithium-niobate waveguides with strong waveguide dispersion using uniform and linearly-chirped poling patterns at input powers in the pico-joule range. We have implemented the accurate unidirectional pulse propagation model to take into account all the possible nonlinear interactions inside these structures. In particular, the poling period has been designed to quasi-phase-match single and multiple sum- and difference-frequency generation processes. We have shown how the poling period can be …
Modern communication networks require high performance and scalable electro-optic modulators that convert electrical signals to optical signals at high speed. Existing lithium niobate modulators have excellent performance but are bulky and prohibitively expensive to scale up. Here we demonstrate scalable and high-performance nanophotonic electro-optic modulators made of single-crystalline lithium niobate microring resonators and micro-Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We show a half-wave electro-optic modulation efficiency of 1.8V$\cdot$cm and data rates up to 40 Gbps.
Highly-tunable coherent light generation is crucial for many important photonic applications. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a dominant approach for this purpose, which, however, exhibits a trade-off between the conversion efficiency and the wavelength tunability in a conventional nonlinear platform. Recent development of the integrated lithium niobate (LN) technology makes it possible to achieve a large wavelength tuning while maintaining a high conversion efficiency. Here we report on-chip SHG that simultaneously achieves a large tunability and a high conversion efficiency inside a sing…
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been extensively studied in various systems since its first proposal in quantum mechanics. Photonic BICs can enable optical mode confinement and provide field enhancement for nonlinear optics, but they have rarely been explored in nonlinear integrated photonic waveguides. Applying BICs in photonic integrated circuits enables low-loss light guidance and routing in low-refractive-index waveguides on high-refractive-index substrates, which is suitable for integrated photonics with nonlinear materials. Here, we report experimental demonstration of second-h…
Optical nonlinear functions are crucial for various applications in integrated photonics, such as all-optical information processing, photonic neural networks and on-chip ultrafast light sources. Due to the weak nonlinearities in most integrated photonic platforms, realizing optical nonlinear functions typically requires large driving energies in the picojoules level or beyond, thus imposing a barrier for most applications. Here, we tackle this challenge and demonstrate an integrated nonlinear splitter device in lithium niobate nano-waveguides by simultaneous engineering of the dispersion and …
Strong amplification in integrated photonics is one of the most desired optical functionalities for computing, communications, sensing, and quantum information processing. Alternatively, material platforms with strong quadratic nonlinearities promise numerous advantages with respect to gain and bandwidth, among which nanophotonic lithium niobate is one of the most promising candidates. Here, we combine quasi-phas…

Yet, their quantum noise level--an crucial metric for any single-photon based application--has yet to be understood. In this work, we report the first study with the focus on telecom to near-visible conversion driven by a telecom p…
Lithium-Niobate-On-Insulator (LNOI) is emerging as a promising platform for integrated quantum photonic technologies because of its high second-order nonlinearity and compact waveguide footprint. Importantly, LNOI allows for creating electro-optically reconfigurable circuits, which can be efficiently operated at cryogenic temperature. Their integration with superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) paves the way for realizing scalable photonic devices for active manipulation and detection of quantum states of light. Lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) is an emerging photonic platform that exhibits favorable material properties (such as low optical loss, strong nonlinearities, and stability) and enables large-scale integration with stronger optical confinement, showing promise for future optical networks, quantum processors, and nonlinear optical systems. However, while photonics engineering has entered the era of automated "inverse design" via optimization in recent years, the design of LNOI integrated photonic devices still mostly relies on intuitive models and inefficient parameter sweeps, limiting the …
Lithium niobate (LN) exhibits unique material characteristics that have found many important applications. Scaling LN devices down to a nanoscopic scale can dramatically enhance light-matter interaction that would enable nonlinear and quantum photonic functionalities beyond the reach of conventional means. However, developing LN-based nanophotonic devices turns out to be nontrivial. Although significant efforts have been devoted in recent years, LN photonic crystal structures developed to date exhibit fairly low quality. Here we demonstrate LN photonic crystal nanobeam resonators with optical …
In this paper, we proposed and numerically demonstrated a giant enhancement up to 108 in both forward and backward propagation of the Second Harmonic Generation by combining the high-quality factor cavities of the Bound States in the Continuum and the excellent nonlinear optical crystal of lithium niobate. The enhancement factor is defined as the ratio of the second harmonic signal generated by the structure (lithium niobate membrane with Si grating) divided by the signal generated by lithium niobate membrane alone. Furthermore, a minimum interaction time of 350 ps is achieved despite the etch…

Periodically poled thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) waveguides have emerged as a leading platform for highly efficient frequency conversion in the near-infrared. However, the commonly used silica bottom-cladding results in high absorption loss at wavelengths beyond 2.5 $μ$m. In this work, we demonstrate efficient frequency conversion in a TFLN-on-sapphire platform, which features high transparency up to 4.5 $μ$m. In particular, we report generating mid-infrared light up to 3.66 $μ$m via difference-frequency generation of a fixed 1-$μ$m source and a tunable telecom source, with normalized effic…
Optical frequency comb is an enabling technology for a multitude of applications from metrology to ranging and communications. The tremendous progress in sources of optical frequency combs has mostly been centered around the near-infrared spectral region while many applications demand sources in the visible and mid-infrared, which have so far been challenging to achieve, especially in nanophotonics. Here, we report frequency combs tunable from visible to mid-infrared on a single chip based on ultra-widely tunable optical parametric oscillators in lithium niobate nanophotonics. Using picosecond…
Polarization is a fundamental degree of freedom for light and is widely leveraged in free space and fiber optics. Non-reciprocal polarization rotation, enabled via the magneto-optic Faraday effect, has been essentially unbeatable for broadband isolators and circulators. For integrated photonics foundries, however, there is still no good path to producing low-loss magneto-optic components, which has prompted a search for alternatives that do not use polarization rotation. Moreover, magneto-optic materials tend to be highly lossy, and while large (10-100 rad/cm) polarization rotation can be achi…
Several applications in modern photonics require compact on-chip optical filters with a tailored spectral response. Phase shifted Bragg gratings implemented by sidewall modulation of photonic nanowire waveguides are a good solution for on-chip narrowband operation with reasonable requirements in fabrication and scalability. In this work we report on their implementation and optimization in thin film lithium niobate, a photonic platform that affords re…

The generated photons are processed with low-loss circuits programmable at speeds of several GHz. We realize a variety of key photonic…
Periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide is a powerful platform for efficient wavelength conversion. Conventional PPLN converters however typically require long device lengths and high pump powers due to the limited nonlinear interaction strength. Here we use a nanostructured PPLN waveguides to demonstrate an ultrahigh normalized efficiency of 2600%/W-cm$^2$ for second-harmonic generation of 1.5-$μ$m radiation, more than 20 times higher than that in state-of-the-art diffused waveguides. This is achieved by a combination of sub-wavelength optical confinement and high-fidelity periodi…
