Despite the number of relevant considerations in the literature, the algebra of generalized symmetries of the Burgers equation has not been exhaustively described. We fill this gap, presenting a basis of this algebra in an explicit form and proving that the two well-known recursion operators of the Burgers equation and two seed generalized symmetries, which are evolution forms of its Lie symmetries, suffice to generate this algebra. The core of the proof is essentially simplified by using the original technique of choosing special coordinates in the associated jet space.
There exist several approaches exploiting Lie symmetries in the reduction of boundary-value problems for partial differential equations modelling real-world phenomena to those problems for ordinary differential equations. Using an example of generalized Burgers equations appearing in nonlinear acoustics we show that that the "direct" procedure of solving boundary-value problems using Lie symmetries firstly described by Bluman is more general and straightforward than the method suggested by Moran and Gaggioli in [J. Eng. Math. 3 (1969), 151-162]. After the group classification of a class of gen…
We construct new integrable coupled systems of N=1 supersymmetric equations and present integrable fermionic extensions of the Burgers and Boussinesq equations. Existence of infinitely many higher symmetries is demonstrated by the presence of recursion operators. Various algebraic methods are applied to the analysis of symmetries, conservation laws, recursion operators, and Hamiltonian structures. A fermionic extension of the Burgers equation is related with the Burgers flows on associative algebras. A Gardner's deformation is found for the bosonic super-field dispersionless Boussinesq equatio…
Reduction operators of generalized Burgers equations are studied. A connection between these equations and potential fast diffusion equations with power nonlinearity -1 via reduction operators is established. Exact solutions of generalized Burgers equations are constructed using this connection and known solutions of the constant-coefficient potential fast diffusion equation.
We apply the Painleve test for integrability of partial differential equations to a system of two coupled Burgers-type equations found by Foursov, which was recently shown by Sergyeyev to possess infinitely many commuting local generalized symmetries without any recursion operator. The Painleve analysis easily detects that this is a typical C-integrable system in the Calogero sense and rediscovers its linearizing transformation.
In this work we study the Lie group analysis of a generalized invicid Burgers' equations with damping. Seven inequivalent classes of this generalized equation were classified and many exact and transformed solutions were obtained for each class.
A detailed analysis of the invariant point transformations for the first four partial differential equations which belong to the Complex Burgers` Hierarchy is performed. Moreover, a detailed application of the reduction process through the Lie point symmetries is presented while we construct similarity solutions. We conclude that the differential equations of our consideration are reduced to first-order equations such as the Abel, Riccati and to a linearisable second-order differential equation by using similarity transformations.
Let $f,g:{\Bbb R}\to{\Bbb R}$ be integrable functions, $f$ nowhere zero, and $ϕ(u)=\int du/f(u)$ be invertible. An exact solution to the generalized nonhomogeneous inviscid Burgers' equation $u_t+g(u).u_x=f(u)$ is given, by quadratures.
We introduce a new concepts of weak solution for the conservative stochastic Burgers equation in any dimension. The definition is based on weak solution concepts introduced by various authors in order to make sense of equations which do not solutions in the sense of distributions. In one dimension the solution reduces to the classical distributional solution of the 1--D stochastic Burgers equation.
We introduce a new technique for studying well posedness and energy estimates for evolution equations with a rough transport term. The technique is based on finding suitable space-time weight functions for the equations at hand. As an example we study the well posedness of the generalized viscous Burgers equation perturbed by a rough path transport noise.
In this paper, we investigate the symmetry properties of a variable coefficient nonlinear space-time fractional Burgers' equation. Fractional Lie symmetries and corresponding infinitesimal generators are obtained. With the help of the infinitesimal generators some group invariant solutions are deduced. Further, some exact solutions of fractional Burgers' equation are generated by the invariant subspace method.
In this paper, a viscous shock wave under space-periodic perturbation of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation is investigated. It is shown that if the initial periodic perturbation around the viscous shock wave is small, then the solution time asymptotically tends to a viscous shock wave with a shift partially determined by the periodic oscillations. Moreover the exponential time decay rate toward the viscous shock wave is also obtained for some certain perturbations.
In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of a system of $N$ partial differential equations. When $N = 1$ the equation reduces to the Burgers equation and was studied by Hopf. We consider both the inviscid and viscous case and show a new feature in the asymptotic behaviour.
Some connections between classical and nonclassical symmetries of a partial differential equation (PDE) are given in terms of determining equations of the two symmetries. These connections provide additional information for determining nonclassical symmetry of a PDE and make it easier to solve the system of nonlinear determining equations. As example, new nonclassical symmetries are exhibited for a class of generalized Burgers equation and KdV-type equations are given.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem with the far field condisiton for the generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation with a fourth-order dissipative term. When the corresponding Riemann problem for the hyperbolic part admits a Riemann solution which consists of single rarefaction wave, it is proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the rarefaction wave as time goes to infinity. We can further obtain the same global asymptotic stability of the rarefaction wave to the generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Benjamin-Bona-Mahony…
We study admissible transformations and Lie symmetries for a class of variable-coefficient Burgers equations. We combine the advanced methods of splitting into normalized subclasses and of mappings between classes that are generated by families of point transformations parameterized by arbitrary elements of the original classes. A nontrivial differential constraint on the arbitrary elements of the class of variable-coefficient Burgers equations leads to its partition into two subclasses, which are related to normalized classes via families of point transformations parameterized by subclasses' …
Analytic continuation of viscous shock solution for the generalized Burgers equation with polynomial nonlinear source term is investigated. We show that a pertubated wave recovers its analyticity in the space variable in the strip limited by the first pair of singularities of the wave.
Considered is the generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation $$ u_{t}+u_{xxx}+uu_{x}+|D_{x}|^{2α}u=0,\quad t\in \mathbb{R}^{+}, x\in \mathbb{R}, $$ with $0\leq α\le 1$. We prove a sharp results on the associated Cauchy problem in the Sobolev space $ {H}^s(\mathbb{R})$. For $s>-\min\{\frac {3+2α}4, 1\}$ we give the well-posedness of solutions of the Cauchy problem, while for $\frac 12\leα\le 1$ and for $s<-\min\{\frac {3+2α}4, 1\}$ we show some ill-posedness issues.
We study the existence of monotone heteroclinic traveling waves for a general Fisher-Burgers equation with nonlinear and possibly density-dependent diffusion. Such a model arises, for instance, in physical phenomena where a saturation effect appears for large values of the gradient. We give an estimate for the critical speed (namely, the first speed for which a monotone heteroclinic traveling wave exists) for some different shapes of the reaction term, and we analyze its dependence on a small real parameter when this brakes the diffusion, complementing our study with some numerical simulations…
The complete group classification problem for the class of (1+1)-dimensional $r$th order general variable-coefficient Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equations is solved for arbitrary values of $r$ greater than or equal to two. We find the equivalence groupoids of this class and its various subclasses obtained by gauging equation coefficients with equivalence transformations. Showing that this class and certain gauged subclasses are normalized in the usual sense, we reduce the complete group classification problem for the entire class to that for the selected maximally gauged subclass, and it is the…
In this paper, we study the small-time global null controllability of the generalized Burgers' equations $y_t + γ|y|^{γ-1}y_x-y_{xx}=u(t)$ on the segment $[0,1]$. The scalar control $u(t)$ is uniform in space and plays a role similar to the pressure in higher dimension. We set a right Dirichlet boundary condition $y(t,1)=0$, and allow a left boundary control $y(t,0)=v(t)$. Under the assumption $γ>3/2$ we prove that the system is small-time global null controllable. Our proof relies on the return method and a careful analysis of the shape and dissipation of a boundary layer.
We consider a generalized Burger's equation (dtu = dxxu - udxu + up - λu)in a subdomain of R, under various boundary conditions. First, using some phase plane arguments, we study the existence of stationary solutions under Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions and prove a bifurcation depending on the parameters. Then, we compare positive solutions of the parabolic equation with appropriate stationary solutions to prove that global existence can occur for the Dirichlet, the Neumann or the dissipative dynamical boundary conditions σdtu+dνu = 0. Finally, for many boundary conditions, global ex…
We carry out enhanced symmetry analysis of a two-dimensional Burgers system. The complete point symmetry group of this system is found using an enhanced version of the algebraic method. Lie reductions of the Burgers system are comprehensively studied in the optimal way and new Lie invariant solutions are constructed. We prove that this system admits no local conservation laws and then study hidden conservation laws, including potential ones. Various kinds of hidden symmetries (continuous, discrete and potential ones) are considered for this system as well. We exhaustively describe the solution…
We have constructed new formulae for generation of solutions for the nonlinear heat equation and for the Burgers equation that are based on linearizing nonlocal transformations and on nonlocal symmetries of linear equations. Found nonlocal symmetries and formulae of nonlocal nonlinear superposition of solutions of these equations were used then for construction of chains of exact solutions. Linearization by means of the Legendre transformations of a second-order PDE with three independent variables allowed to obtain nonlocal superposition formulae for solutions of this equation, and to generat…
We prove the existence of generalized characteristics for weak, not necessarily entropic, solutions of Burgers' equation \[ \partial_t u +\partial_x \frac{u^2}{2} =0, \] whose entropy productions are signed measures. Such solutions arise in connection with large deviation principles for the hydrodynamic limit of interacting particle systems. The present work allows to remove a technical trace assumption in a recent result by the two first authors about the $L^2$ stability of entropic shocks among such non-entropic solutions. The proof relies on the Lagrangian representation of a solution's hyp…
In many situations, the notion of function is not sufficient and it needs to be extended. A classical way to do this is to introduce the notion of weak solution; another approach is to use generalized functions. Ultrafunctions are a particular class of generalized functions that has been previously introduced and used to define generalized solutions of stationary problems in [4,7,9,11,12]. In this paper we generalize this notion in order to study also evolution problems. In particular, we introduce the notion of Generalized Ultrafunction Solution (GUS) for a large family of PDE's, and we confr…
We prove the convergence of the solutions $u_{m,p}$ of the equation $u_t+(u^m)_x=-u^p$ in $\R\times (0,\infty)$, $u(x,0)=u_0(x)\ge 0$ in $\R$, as $m\to\infty$ for any $p>1$ and $u_0\in L^1(\R)\cap L^{\infty}(\R)$ or as $p\to\infty$ for any $m>1$ and $u_0\in L^{\infty}(\R)$ . We also show that in general $\underset{p\to\infty}\lim\underset{m\to\infty}\lim u_{m,p}\ne\underset{m\to\infty}\lim\underset{p\to\infty}\lim u_{m,p}$.
In this paper we are concerned with the well-posedness and the exponential stabilization of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries Burgers equation, posed on the whole real line, under the effect of a damping term. Both problems are investigated when the exponent p in the nonlinear term ranges over the interval $[1,5)$. We first prove the global well-posedness in $H^s(R)$, for $0 \leq s \leq 3$ and $1 \leq p < 2$, and in $H^3(R)$, when $p \geq 2$. For $2 \leq p < 5$, we prove the existence of global solutions in the $L^2$-setting. Then, by using multiplier techniques combined with interpolation the…
The generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation (gBBMB) describes the flow of blood through a long, viscoelastic artery. In this article we introduce a formulation of gBBMB valid on networks with semi-infinite edges joined at a single junction, with the network's edges corresponding to a segment of the arterial tree. To reflect sudden changes in the material properties of blood vessels, the coefficients of gBBMB are allowed to take different values on each edge of the network. Critically, our formulation ensures that the total mass of the solution to gBBMB is constant in time, even in th…
The Burgers' equation is a one-dimensional momentum equation for a Newtonian fluid. The Cole-Hopf transformation solves the equation for a given initial and boundary condition. However, in most cases the resulting integral equation can only be solved numerically. In this work a new semi-analytic solving method is introduced for analytic and bounded series solutions of the Burgers' equation. It is demonstrated that a sequence transformation can split the non-linear Burgers' equation into a sequence of linear diffusion equations. Each consecutive sequence element can be solved recursively using …
We study generalized variants of the Burgers equation and the KdV equation on the circle. The main goal of the paper is to show that both extensions can be recast as geodesic equations on a suitable diffeomorphism group of the circle and the corresponding Bott-Virasoro group respectively. As a consequence we obtain that the initial value problem for the Burgers equation with an additional quadratic term is well-posed on a scale of Sobolev spaces on the circle.
We develop a Lagrangian approach to conservation-law anomalies in weak solutions of inviscid Burgers equation, motivated by previous work on the Kraichnan model of turbulent scalar advection. We show that the entropy solutions of Burgers possess Markov stochastic processes of (generalized) Lagrangian trajectories backward in time for which the Burgers velocity is a backward martingale. This property is shown to guarantee dissipativity of conservation-law anomalies for general convex functions of the velocity. The backward stochastic Burgers flows with these properties are not unique, however. …
A numerical scheme based on backward differentiation formula (BDF) and generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) has been developed. The proposed scheme has been employed to investigate three cases of Burgers equation, one-dimensional, two-dimensional and two-dimensional coupled models. The results showed an effectiveness accuracy in absolute error and error norms
Nonclassical symmetries of a class of generalized Huxley equations of form $u_t=u_{xx}+k(x)u^2(1-u)$ are found. More precisely, for the class under consideration we completely classify reduction operators with $τ=1$ and give a wide number of examples of equations admitting reduction operators with $τ=0$.
The aim of this paper is to propose methods that enable us to build new numerical schemes, which preserve the Lie symmetries of the original differential equations. To this purpose, the compound Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries (\textit{CBKDV}) equation is considered. The particular case of the Burgers equation is taken as a numerical example, and the resulting semi-invariant scheme is exposed.
We analyze the relationship of generalized conditional symmetries of evolution equations to the formal compatibility and passivity of systems of differential equations as well as to systems of vector fields in involution. Earlier results on the connection between generalized conditional invariance and generalized reduction of evolution equations are revisited. This leads to a no-go theorem on determining equations for operators of generalized conditional symmetry. It is also shown that up to certain equivalences there exists a one-to-one correspondence between generalized conditional symmetrie…
Evaluation of analytical solutions of non-linear partial differential equations (both classical and fractional) is a rising subject in Applied Mathematics because its applications in Physical biological and social sciences. In this paper we have used generalized Tanh method to find the exact solution of KP-Burger equation and coupled KdV equation. The fractional Sub-equation method has been used to find the solution of fractional KP-Burger equation and fractional coupled KdV equations. The exact solution obtained by fractional sub-equation method reduces to classical solution when order of fra…
We consider higher order viscous Burgers' equations with generalized nonlinearity and study the associated initial value problems for given data in the $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. We introduce appropriate time weighted spaces to derive multilinear estimates and use them in the contraction mapping principle argument to prove local well-posedness for data with Sobolev regularity below $L^2$. We also prove ill-posedness for this type of models and show that the local well-posedness results are sharp in some particular cases viz., when the orders of dissipation $p$, and nonlinearity $k+1$, satisfy…
We consider the generalized Fornberg-Whitham equation. We study sufficient conditions for blow-up of solutions and show the global existence with small initial data. Also we give some relations to the Burgers equation.
We study an Eulerian droplet model which can be seen as the pressureless gas system with a source term, a subsystem of this model and the inviscid Burgers equation with source term. The condition for loss of regularity of a solution to Burgers equation with source term is established. The same condition applies to the Eulerian droplet model and its subsystem. The Riemann problem for the Eulerian droplet model is constructively solved by going through the solution of the Riemann problems for the inviscid Burgers equation with a source term and the subsystem, respectively. Under suitable general…
We determine, by hierarchy, dependencies between higher order linear symmetries which occur when generating them using recursion operators. Thus, we deduce a formula which gives the number of independent generalized symmetries (basis) of several orders. We construct a basis for conservation laws (with respect to the group admitted by the system of differential equation) and hence generate infinite conservation laws in each equivalence class.
This note addresses input-to-state stability (ISS) properties with respect to (w.r.t.) boundary and in-domain disturbances for Burgers' equation. The developed approach is a combination of the method of De~Giorgi iteration and the technique of Lyapunov functionals by adequately splitting the original problem into two subsystems. The ISS properties in $L^2$-norm for Burgers' equation have been established using this method. Moreover, as an application of De~Giorgi iteration, ISS in $L^\infty$-norm w.r.t. in-domain disturbances and actuation errors in boundary feedback control for a 1-$D$ {linea…
