Some connections between classical and nonclassical symmetries of a partial differential equation (PDE) are given in terms of determining equations of the two symmetries. These connections provide additional information for determining nonclassical symmetry of a PDE and make it easier to solve the system of nonlinear determining equations. As example, new nonclassical symmetries are exhibited for a class of generalized Burgers equation and KdV-type equations are given.
Various versions of the definition of nonclassical symmetries existing in the literature are analyzed. Comparing properties of Lie and nonclassical symmetries leads to the conclusion that in fact a nonclassical symmetry is not a symmetry in the usual sense. Hence the term "reduction operator" is suggested instead of the name "operator of nonclassical symmetries". It is shown that in contrast to the case of single partial differential equations a satisfactory definition of nonclassical symmetries for systems of such equations has not been proposed up to now. Moreover, the cardinality of essenti…
We apply the Lie-group formalism and the nonclassical method due to Bluman and Cole to deduce symmetries of the generalized Boussinesq equation, which has the classical Boussinesq equation as an special case. We study the class of functions $f(u)$ for which this equation admit either the classical or the nonclassical method. The reductions obtained are derived. Some new exact solutions can be derived.
Nonclassical symmetries of a class of generalized Huxley equations of form $u_t=u_{xx}+k(x)u^2(1-u)$ are found. More precisely, for the class under consideration we completely classify reduction operators with $τ=1$ and give a wide number of examples of equations admitting reduction operators with $τ=0$.
In this paper, we have studied the problem of determining the largest possible set of symmetries for an important example of nonlinear dynamical system: the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (K-S) model in two spatial and one temporal dimensions. By applying the classical symmetry method for the K-S model, we have found the classical symmetry operators. Also, the structure of the Lie algebra of symmetries is discussed and the optimal system of subalgebras of the equation is constructed. The Lie invariants associated to the symmetry generators as well as the corresponding similarity reduced equations are al…
A special class of symmetry reductions called nonclassical equivalence transformations is discussed in connection to a class of parameter identification problems represented by partial differential equations. These symmetry reductions relate the forward and inverse problems, reduce the dimension of the equation, yield special types of solutions, and may be incorporated into the boundary conditions as well. As an example, we discuss the nonlinear stationary heat conduction equation and show that this approach permits the study of the model on new types of domains. Our MAPLE routine GENDEFNC whi…
The notion of singular reduction modules, i.e., of singular modules of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of differential equations is introduced. It is shown that the derivation of nonclassical symmetries for differential equations can be improved by an in-depth prior study of the associated singular modules of vector fields. The form of differential functions and differential equations possessing parameterized families of singular modules is described up to point transformations. Singular cases of finding reduction modules are related to lowering the order of the corresponding reduced equa…
The reduction operators, i.e., the operators of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of (1+1)-dimensional second order linear parabolic partial differential equations and all the possible reductions of these equations to ordinary differential ones are exhaustively described. This problem proves to be equivalent, in some sense, to solving the initial equations. The ``no-go'' result is extended to the investigation of point transformations (admissible transformations, equivalence transformations, Lie symmetries) and Lie reductions of the determining equations for the nonclassical symmetries. Tra…
A full symmetry classification is given for models of energy transport in radiant plasma when the mass density is spatially variable and the diffusivity is nonlinear. A systematic search for conservation laws also leads to some potential symmetries, and to an integrable nonlinear model. Classical point symmetries, potential symmetries and nonclassical symmetries are used to effect variable reductions and exact solutions. The simplest time-dependent solution is shown to be stable, and relevant to a closed system.
The notion of singular reduction operators, i.e., of singular operators of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of partial differential equations in two independent variables is introduced. All possible reductions of these equations to first-order ODEs are are exhaustively described. As examples, properties of singular reduction operators of (1+1)-dimensional evolution and wave equations are studied. It is shown how to favourably enhance the derivation of nonclassical symmetries for this class by an in-depth prior study of the corresponding singular vector fields.
In this paper, Lie symmetry method is performed for the Hirota-Ramani (H-R) equation. We will find The symmetry group and optimal systems of Lie subalgebras. Furthermore, preliminary classification of its group invariant solutions, symmetry reduction and nonclassical symmeries are investigated. Finally the conservation laws of the H-R equation are presented.
In this paper we study symmetry reductions of a class of nonlinear fourth order partial differential equations \be u_{tt} = \left(κu + γu^2\right)_{xx} + u u_{xxxx} +μu_{xxtt}+αu_x u_{xxx} + βu_{xx}^2, \ee where $α$, $β$, $γ$, $κ$ and $μ$ are constants. This equation may be thought of as a fourth order analogue of a generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, about which there has been considerable recent interest. Further equation (1) is a ``Boussinesq-type'' equation which arises as a model of vibrations of an anharmonic mass-spring chain and admits both ``compacton'' and conventional solit…
We apply the theory of infinitesimal transformations for the study of a family of 1+1 fifth-order partial differential equations which have been proposed before for the description of multiple kink solutions. In this analysis we perform a complete classification of the Lie symmetries and of the one-dimensional optimal system. The results are applied for the derivation of similarity solutions and in particular we find travel-wave and scaling solutions. We show that the kink-solution of these equations can be recovered by the use of the Lie symmetries, while new solutions are also derived.
We have constructed new formulae for generation of solutions for the nonlinear heat equation and for the Burgers equation that are based on linearizing nonlocal transformations and on nonlocal symmetries of linear equations. Found nonlocal symmetries and formulae of nonlocal nonlinear superposition of solutions of these equations were used then for construction of chains of exact solutions. Linearization by means of the Legendre transformations of a second-order PDE with three independent variables allowed to obtain nonlocal superposition formulae for solutions of this equation, and to generat…
Similarity reductions and new exact solutions are obtained for a nonlinear diffusion equation. These are obtained by using the classical symmetry group and reducing the partial differential equation to various ordinary differential equations. For the equations so obtained, first integrals are deduced which consequently give rise to explicit solutions. Potential symmetries, which are realized as local symmetries of a related auxiliary system, are obtained. For some special nonlinearities new symmetry reductions and exact solutions are derived by using the nonclassical method.
In this paper, symmetry analysis is extended to study nonlocal differential equations, in particular two integrable nonlocal equations, the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the nonlocal modified Korteweg--de Vries equation. Lie point symmetries are obtained based on a general theory and used to reduce these equations to nonlocal and local ordinary differential equations separately; namely one symmetry may allow reductions to both nonlocal and local equations depending on how the invariant variables are chosen. For the nonlocal modified Korteweg--de Vries equation, analogously to the…
We provide a general theoretical framework allowing us to extend the classical Lie theory for partial differential equations to the case of equations of fractional order. We propose a general prolongation formula for the study of Lie symmetries in the case of an arbitrary finite number of independent variables. We also prove the Lie theorem in the case of fractional differential equations, showing that the proper space for the analysis of these symmetries is the infinite dimensional jet space.
We introduce a method to construct conservation laws for a large class of linear partial differential equations. In contrast to the classical result of Noether, the conserved currents are generated by any symmetry of the operator, including those of the non-Lie type. An explicit example is made of the Dirac equation were we use our construction to find a class of conservation laws associated with a 64 dimensional Lie algebra of discrete symmetries that includes CPT.
We study a nonlinear system of partial differential equations which describe rotating shallow water with an arbitrary constant polytropic index $γ$ for the fluid. In our analysis we apply the theory of symmetries for differential equations and we determine that the system of our study is invariant under a five dimensional Lie algebra. The admitted Lie symmetries form the $\left\{ 2A_{1}\oplus _{s}2A_{1}\right\} \oplus _{s}A_{1}$ Lie algebra for $γ\neq 1$ and $2A_{1}\oplus _{s}3A_{1}$ for $γ=1$. The application of the Lie symmetries is performed with the derivation of the corresponding zero-ord…
Lie symmetry analysis is an established method for generating symmetries of differential equations. We apply this method together the generalized fundamental theorem of double reduction. In particular, Noether symmetries and some associated conservation laws are constructed in our investigation to find exact solutions of higher order partial differential equations and complex partial differential equations.
We apply the theory of Lie symmetries in order to study a fourth-order $1+2$ evolutionary partial differential equation which has been proposed for the image processing noise reduction. In particular we determine the Lie point symmetries for the specific 1+2 partial differential equations and we apply the invariant functions to determine similarity solutions. For the static solutions we observe that the reduced fourth-order ordinary differential equations are reduced to second-order ordinary differential equations which are maximally symmetric. Finally, nonstatic closed-form solutions are also…
