In this paper we study symmetry reductions of a class of nonlinear fourth order partial differential equations \be u_{tt} = \left(κu + γu^2\right)_{xx} + u u_{xxxx} +μu_{xxtt}+αu_x u_{xxx} + βu_{xx}^2, \ee where $α$, $β$, $γ$, $κ$ and $μ$ are constants. This equation may be thought of as a fourth order analogue of a generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, about which there has been considerable recent interest. Further equation (1) is a ``Boussinesq-type'' equation which arises as a model of vibrations of an anharmonic mass-spring chain and admits both ``compacton'' and conventional solitons. A catalogue of symmetry reductions for equation (1) is obtained using the classical Lie method and the nonclassical method due to Bluman and Cole. In particular we obtain several reductions using the nonclassical method which are no} obtainable through the classical method.
In this paper, we establish a fundamental inequality for fourth order partial differential operator $\cal P=α\partial_s+β\partial_{ss}+Δ^2$ ($α, β\in\mathbb{R}$) with an abstract exponential-type weight function. Such kind of weight functions including not only the regular weight functions but also the singular weight functions. Using this inequality we are able to prove some Carleman estimates for the operator $\cal P$ with some suitable boundary conditions in the case of $β<0$ or $α\neq 0, β=0$. As application, we obtain a resolvent estimate for $\cal P$, which can imply a log-type stabiliza…
We prove the global-in-time existence of nonnegative weak solutions to a class of fourth order partial differential equations on a convex bounded domain in arbitrary spatial dimensions. Our proof relies on the formal gradient flow structure of the equation with respect to the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance on the space of probability measures. We construct a weak solution by approximation via the time-discrete minimizing movement scheme; necessary compactness estimates are derived by entropy-dissipation methods. Our theory essentially comprises the thin film and Derrida-Lebowitz-Speer-Spohn equati…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with derivative nonlinearity $(i\partial _t + Δ^2) u= \pm \partial (|u|^2u)$ on $\mathbb{R} ^d$, $d \ge 3$, with random initial data, where $\partial$ is a first order derivative with respect to the spatial variable, for example a linear combination of $\frac{\partial}{\partial x_1} , \, \dots , \, \frac{\partial}{\partial x_d}$ or $|\nabla |= \mathcal{F}^{-1}[|ξ| \mathcal{F}]$. We prove that almost sure local in time well-posedness, small data global in time well-posedness and scattering hold in $H^s(\mathbb{R}…
We apply the theory of Lie symmetries in order to study a fourth-order $1+2$ evolutionary partial differential equation which has been proposed for the image processing noise reduction. In particular we determine the Lie point symmetries for the specific 1+2 partial differential equations and we apply the invariant functions to determine similarity solutions. For the static solutions we observe that the reduced fourth-order ordinary differential equations are reduced to second-order ordinary differential equations which are maximally symmetric. Finally, nonstatic closed-form solutions are also…
It is well-known that any solution of the Laplace equation is a real or imaginary part of a complex holomorphic function. In this paper, in some sense, we extend this property into four order hyperbolic and elliptic type PDEs. To be more specific, the extension is for a $c$-biwave PDE with constant coefficients, and we show that the components of a differentiable function on the associated hypercomplex algebras provide solutions for the equation.
We study the wellposedness of Cauchy problem for the fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equations i\partial_t u=-\epsΔu+Δ^2 u+P((\partial_x^αu)_{\absα\ls 2}, (\partial_x^α\bar{u})_{\absα\ls 2}),\quad t\in \Real, x\in\Real^n, where $\eps\in\{-1,0,1\}$, $n\gs 2$ denotes the spatial dimension and $P(\cdot)$ is a polynomial excluding constant and linear terms.
Parametric factorizations of linear partial operators on the plane are considered for operators of orders two, three and four. The operators are assumed to have a completely factorable symbol. It is proved that ``irreducible'' parametric factorizations may exist only for a few certain types of factorizations. Examples are given of the parametric families for each of the possible types. For the operators of orders two and three, it is shown that any factorization family is parameterized by a single univariate function (which can be a constant function).
We consider asymptotic behavior of the following fourth order equation \[ Δ^2 u= ρ\frac{e^{u}}{\int_\Om e^{u} dx} {in} \Om, u= \partial_νu=0 {on} \partial Ω\] where $\Om$ is a smooth oriented bounded domain in $\R^4$. Assuming that $0<ρ\leq C$, we completely characterize the asymptotic behavior of the unbounded solutions.
We prove a weak form of the soliton resolution conjecture of bounded solutions of high-dimensional fourth-order Schrodinger equations. The result relies upon two properties to be proved: the asymptotic frequency localization and the asymptotic spatial localization. In order to prove the asymptotic frequency localization we use the fact that the high frequency pieces of the free solution have better dispersive properties than the lower ones. In order to prove the asymptotic spatial localization, we use the symmetries of the phase of the fundamental solution.
When studying boundary value problems for some partial differential equations arising in applied mathematics, we often have to study the solution of a system of partial differential equations satisfied by hypergeometric functions and find explicit linearly independent solutions for the system. In this study, we construct self-similar solutions of some model degenerate partial differential equations of the second, third, and fourth order. These self-similar solutions are expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions.
This paper deals with the Cauchy problem associated to the nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation with isotropic and anisotropic mixed dispersion. This model is given by the equation $i\partial _{t}u+εΔu+δA u+λ|u|^αu=0,$ $x\in \mathbb{R}^{n},$ $t\in \mathbb{R},$ where $A$ represents either the operator $Δ^2$ (isotropic dispersion) or $\sum_{i=1}^d\partial_{x_ix_ix_ix_i},\ 1\leq d<n$ (anisotropic dispersion), and $α, ε, λ$ are given real parameters. We obtain local and global well-posedness results in spaces of initial data with low regularity, such as weak-$L^p$ spaces. Our analysis also …

Blow-up in second and fourth order semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is considered in bounded regions of one, two and three spatial dimensions with uniform initial data. A phenomenon whereby singularities form at multiple points simultaneously is exhibited and explained by means of a singular perturbation theory. In the second order case we pre- dict that points furthest from the boundary are selected by the dynamics of the PDE for singularity. In the fourth order case, singularities can form simultaneously at multiple locations, even in one spatial dimension. In two …
We study a higher order parabolic partial differential equation that arises in the context of condensed matter physics. It is a fourth order semilinear equation whose nonlinearity is the determinant of the Hessian matrix of the solution. We consider this model in a bounded domain of the real plane and study its stationary solutions both when the geometry of this domain is arbitrary and when it is the unit ball and the solution is radially symmetric. We also consider the initial-boundary value problem for the full parabolic equation. We summarize our results on existence of solutions in these c…
We examine the equation \[Δ^2 u = λf(u) \qquad Ω, \] with either Navier or Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show some uniqueness results under certain constraints on the parameter $ λ$. We obtain similar results for the sytem {equation*} \{{array}{rrl} -Δu &=& λf(v) \qquad Ω, -Δv &=& γg(u) \qquad Ω, u&=& v = 0 \qquad \partial Omega. {array}. {equation*}
In this paper we prove the global existence of a strong solution to the initial boundary value problem for the exponential partial differential equation $\partial_tu-Δe^{-Δu}+e^{-Δu}-1=0$. The equation was proposed as a continuum model for epitaxial growth of crystal surfaces on vicinal surfaces with evaporation and deposition effects \cite{GLLM}. Our investigations reveal that we must control the size of both $\left\| e^{-Δu(x,0)}\right\|_{W^{2,2}(Ω)}$ and $\left\| e^{Δu(x,0)}\right\|_{\infty,Ω}$ suitably to achieve our results. Related results in \cite{GM,LS} were established via the Weiner …
Let $λ^{*}>0$ denote the largest possible value of $λ$ such that $$ \{{array}{lllllll} Δ^{2}u=\fracλ{(1-u)^{p}} & \{in}\ \ B, 0<u\leq 1 & \{in}\ \ B, u=\frac{\partial u}{\partial n} =0 & \{on}\ \ \partial B. {array} . $$ has a solution, where $B$ is the unit ball in $R^{n}$ centered at the origin, $p>1$ and $n$ is the exterior unit normal vector. We show that for $λ=λ^{*}$ this problem possesses a unique weak solution $u^{*}$, called the extremal solution. We prove that $u^{*}$ is singular when $n\geq 13$ for $p$ large enough and $1-C_{0}r^{\frac{4}{p+1}}\leq u^{*}(x)\leq 1-r^{\frac{4}{p+1}}$ …
In the present paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger type equations with a derivative nonlinearity. In one dimensional case, we prove that the fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the derivative quartic nonlinearity $\partial _x (\overline{u}^4)$ is the small data global in time well-posed and scattering to a free solution. Furthermore, we show that the same result holds for the $d \ge 2$ and derivative polynomial type nonlinearity, for example $|\nabla | (u^m)$ with $(m-1)d \ge 4$.
The Lie symmetry analysis for the study of a $1+n~$fourth-order Schrödinger equation inspired by the modification of the deformation algebra in the presence of a minimum length is applied. Specifically, we perform a detailed classification for the scalar field potential function where non-trivial Lie symmetries exist and simplify the Schrödinger equation. Then, a qualitative analysis allows for the reduced ordinary differential equation to be analyzed to understand the asymptotic dynamics.
For a smooth strictly plurisubharmonic function $u$ on a open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and $F$ a $C^{1}$ nondecreasing function on $\mathbf{R}^{*}_{+}$, we investigate the complex partial differential equations $$Δ_{g}\log\det(u_{i\bar j})=F(\det(u_{i\bar j}))\Vert\nabla_{g}\log\det(u_{i\bar j})\Vert_{g}^{2},$$ where $Δ_{g}$, $\Vert . \Vert_{g}$ and $\nabla_{g}$ are the Laplacian, tensor norm and the Levi-Civita connexion , respectively, with respect to the Kähler metric $g=\partial\bar\partial u$. We show that the above PDE's has a Bernstein property, i.e $\det(u_{i\bar j})=\hbox{constant…
Finite time singularity formation in a fourth order nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) is analyzed. The PDE is a variant of a ubiquitous model found in the field of Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and is studied on a one-dimensional (1D) strip and the unit disc. The solution itself remains continuous at the point of singularity while its higher derivatives diverge, a phenomenon known as quenching. For certain parameter regimes it is shown numerically that the singularity will form at multiple isolated points in the 1D strip case and along a ring of points in the ra…
In this paper, we prove dispersion estimates for the boundary integral operator associated with the fourth order Schrödinger equation posed on the half line. Proofs of such estimates for domains with boundaries are rare and generally require highly technical approaches, as opposed to our simple treatment which is based on constructing a boundary integral operator of oscillatory nature via the Fokas method. Our method is uniform and can be extended to other higher order partial differential equations where the main equation possibly involves more than one spatial derivatives.
We consider the fourth-order Schrödinger equation $$ i\partial_tu+Δ^2 u+μΔu+λ|u|^αu=0, $$ where $α>0,μ=\pm1$ or $0$ and $λ\in\mathbb{C}$. Firstly, we prove local well-posedness in $H^4\left(\R^N\right)$ in both $H^4$ subcritical and critical case: $α>0$, $(N-8)α\leq8$. Then, for any given compact set $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, we construct $H^4(\R^N)$ solutions that are defined on $(-T, 0)$ for some $T>0$, and blow up exactly on $K$ at $t=0$.
Lie symmetry analysis is an established method for generating symmetries of differential equations. We apply this method together the generalized fundamental theorem of double reduction. In particular, Noether symmetries and some associated conservation laws are constructed in our investigation to find exact solutions of higher order partial differential equations and complex partial differential equations.
In this paper, we consider the relation between $p > 1$ and critical dimension of the extremal solution of the semilinear equation $$\{\begin{array}{lllllll} βΔ^{2}u-τΔu=\fracλ{(1-u)^{p}} & in\ \ B, 0<u\leq 1 & in\ \ B, u=Δu=0 & on\ \ \partial B, \end{array} . $$ where $B$ is the unit ball in $R^{n}$, $λ>0$ is a parameter, $τ>0, β>0,p>1$ are fixed constants. By Hardy-Rellich inequality, we find that when $p$ is large enough, the critical dimension is 13.}
We consider Liouville-type and partial regularity results for the nonlinear fourth-order problem $$ Δ^2 u=|u|^{p-1}u\ \{in} \ \R^n,$$ where $ p>1$ and $n\ge1$. We give a complete classification of stable and finite Morse index solutions (whether positive or sign changing), in the full exponent range. We also compute an upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of extremal solutions. Our approach is motivated by Fleming's tangent cone analysis technique for minimal surfaces and Federer's dimension reduction principle in partial regularity theory. A key tool is the monotonicity …
In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation, namely \[ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcl} i\partial_t u +Δ^2 u &=&-|u|^{ν-1} u, \quad 1+ \frac{8}{d}<ν<1+\frac{8}{d-4},\\ u(0)&=&u_0 \in H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d), \quad 5 \leq d \leq 11. \end{array} \right. \] Using the $I$-method combined with the interaction Morawetz inequality, we establish the global well-posedness and scattering in $H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $γ(d,ν)<γ<2$ for some value $γ(d,ν)>0$.
We consider the low regularity behavior of the fourth order cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS) \begin{align*} \begin{cases} i\partial_tu+\partial_x^4u=\pm \vert u \vert^2u, \quad(t,x)\in \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x)\in H^s\left(\mathbb{R}\right). \end{cases} \end{align*} In arXiv:1911.03253, the author showed that this equation is globally well-posed in $H^s, s\geq -\frac{1}{2}$ and ill-posedness in the sense that the solution map fails to be uniformly continuous for $-\frac{15}{14}<s<-\frac{1}{2}$. Therefore, $s=-\frac{1}{2}$ is the lowest regularity that can be handle…
A theory for the characterization of the fourth moment of electromagnetic wave beams is presented in the case when the source is partially coherent. A Gaussian-Schell model is used for the partially coherent random source. The white-noise paraxial regime is considered, which holds when the wavelength is much smaller than the correlation radius of the source, the beam radius of the source, and the correlation length of the medium, which are themselves much smaller than the propagation distance. The complex wave amplitude field can then be described by the Itô-Schrödinger equation. This equation…
This paper is concerned with a fourth order nonlinear dispersive partial differential equation for closed curve flow on a Kähler manifold. The main results is that the initial value problem has a solution locally in time if the Kähler manifold is a compact locally hermitian symmetric space. The proof is based on the geometric energy method combined with a nice gauge transformation to eliminate the loss of derivatives. Interestingly, the results can be applied to construct a generalized bi-Schrödinger flow proposed by Ding and Wang. The assumption on the manifold plays a crucial role both to en…
Some connections between classical and nonclassical symmetries of a partial differential equation (PDE) are given in terms of determining equations of the two symmetries. These connections provide additional information for determining nonclassical symmetry of a PDE and make it easier to solve the system of nonlinear determining equations. As example, new nonclassical symmetries are exhibited for a class of generalized Burgers equation and KdV-type equations are given.
The main purpose of this paper is to show the global stabilization and exact controllability properties for a fourth order nonlinear fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger system: $$i\partial_tu +\partial_x^2u-\partial_x^4u=λ|u|^2u,$$ on a periodic domain $\mathbb{T}$ with internal control supported on an arbitrary sub-domain of $\mathbb{T}$. More precisely, by certain properties of propagation of compactness and regularity in Bourgain spaces, for the solutions of the associated linear system, we show that the system is globally exponentially stabilizable. This property together with the local exa…
In this paper, we give several new approaches to study interior estimates for a class of fourth order equations of Monge-Ampère type. First, we prove interior estimates for the homogeneous equation in dimension two by using the partial Legendre transform. As an application, we obtain a new proof of the Bernstein theorem without using Caffarelli-Gutiérrez's estimate, including the Chern conjecture on affine maximal surfaces. For the inhomogeneous equation, we also obtain a new proof in dimension two by an integral method relying on the Monge-Ampère Sobolev inequality. This proof works even when…
We prove integrability of a generalised non-commutative fourth order quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The proof is relatively succinct and rooted in the linearisation method pioneered by Ch. Poppe. It is based on solving the corresponding linearised partial differential system to generate an evolutionary Hankel operator for the `scattering data'. The time-evolutionary solution to the non-commutative nonlinear partial differential system is then generated by solving a linear Fredholm equation which corresponds to the Marchenko equation. The integrability of reverse space-time and reverse…
In this paper we prove a uniform controllability result for a fourth order parabolic partial differential equation which includes a transport term, when the coefficients of higher order terms vanish. We prove the null controllability of the system with a single boundary control, and also it is obtained that the cost of the control decreases to zero, under the hypothesis of the control time being large enough. Moreover, we prove that, if the control time is small enough, the cost of controllability increases to infinity.
We consider homoclinic solutions of fourth order equations $$ u^{""} + β^2 u^{"} + V_u (u)=0 {in} \R ,$$ where $V(u)$ is either the suspension bridge type $V(u)=e^u-1-u$ or Swift-Hohenberg type $ V(u)= {1/4}(u^2-1)^2$. For the suspension bridge type equation, we prove existence of a homoclinic solution for {\em all} $ β\in (0, β_*)$ where $ β_{*}= 0.7427...$. For the Swift-Hohenberg type equation, we prove existence of a homoclinic solution for each $β\in (0, β_{*})$, where $β_{*}=0.9342...$. This partially solves a conjecture of Chen--McKenna \cite{YCM1}.
We apply the theory of infinitesimal transformations for the study of a family of 1+1 fifth-order partial differential equations which have been proposed before for the description of multiple kink solutions. In this analysis we perform a complete classification of the Lie symmetries and of the one-dimensional optimal system. The results are applied for the derivation of similarity solutions and in particular we find travel-wave and scaling solutions. We show that the kink-solution of these equations can be recovered by the use of the Lie symmetries, while new solutions are also derived.
We have constructed new formulae for generation of solutions for the nonlinear heat equation and for the Burgers equation that are based on linearizing nonlocal transformations and on nonlocal symmetries of linear equations. Found nonlocal symmetries and formulae of nonlocal nonlinear superposition of solutions of these equations were used then for construction of chains of exact solutions. Linearization by means of the Legendre transformations of a second-order PDE with three independent variables allowed to obtain nonlocal superposition formulae for solutions of this equation, and to generat…
This paper deals with some mathematical models arising in the theory of epitaxial growth of crystal. We focalize the study on a stationary problem which presents some analytical difficulties. We study the existence of solutions. The central model in this work is given by the following fourth order elliptic equation, $$\begin{array}{rclll} Δ^2 u=\text{det} \left(D^2 u \right) &+&λf, \quad & x\in Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2\\ \hbox{conditions on} &\quad& & \partial Ω. \end{array} $$ The framework to study the problem deeply depends on the boundary conditions.
In this paper, symmetry analysis is extended to study nonlocal differential equations, in particular two integrable nonlocal equations, the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the nonlocal modified Korteweg--de Vries equation. Lie point symmetries are obtained based on a general theory and used to reduce these equations to nonlocal and local ordinary differential equations separately; namely one symmetry may allow reductions to both nonlocal and local equations depending on how the invariant variables are chosen. For the nonlocal modified Korteweg--de Vries equation, analogously to the…
In this paper we establish a gap phenomenon for immersed surfaces with arbitrary codimension, topology and boundaries that satisfy one of a family of systems of fourth-order anisotropic geometric partial differential equations. Examples include Willmore surfaces, stationary solitons for the surface diffusion flow, and biharmonic immersed surfaces in the sense of Chen. On the boundary we enforce either umbilic or flat boundary conditions: that the tracefree second fundamental form and its derivative or the full second fundamental form and its derivative vanish. For the umbilic boundary conditio…
