In this paper, we establish a theorem that proves a condition when an inclusion morphism between simplicial sets becomes a weak homotopy equivalence. Additionally, we present two applications of this result. The first application demonstrates that cofinal full inclusion functors of (\infty)-categories are weak homotopy equivalences. For our second application, we provide an alternative proof of Barwick's cofinality theorem of algebraic (K)-theory.
This paper contains two results on how homotopy limits of topological spaces interact with connectivity. The first is a formula for the connectivity of the homotopy limit of diagrams shaped over suitably finite categories, in terms of the connectivity of the spaces in the diagram. The second result shows that the homotopy fiber of the restriction map induced on homotopy limits by a functor of indexing categories is itself a homotopy limit, indexed over a Grothendieck construction.
We provide a fairly self-contained account of the localisation and cofinality theorems for the algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-theory of stable $\infty$-categories. It is based on a general formula for the evaluation of an additive functor on a Verdier quotient closely following work of Waldhausen. We also include a new proof of the additivity theorem of $\mathrm{K}$-theory, strongly inspired by Ranicki's algebraic Thom construction, a short proof of the universality theorem of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, and demonstrate that the cofinality theorem can be derived from the universal property alone.
In this work, we prove a generalization of Quillen's Theorem A to 2-categories equipped with a special set of morphisms which we think of as weak equivalences, providing sufficient conditions for a 2-functor to induce an equivalence on $(\infty,1)$-localizations. When restricted to 1-categories with all morphisms marked, our theorem retrieves the classical Theorem A of Quillen. We additionally state and provide evidence for a new conjecture: the cofinality conjecture, which describes the relation between a conjectural theory of marked $(\infty,2)$-colimits and our generalization of Theorem A.
Like categories, small 2-categories have well-understood classifying spaces. In this paper, we deal with homotopy types represented by 2-diagrams of 2-categories. Our results extend to homotopy colimits of 2-functors lower categorical analogues that have been classically used in algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory, such as the Homotopy Invariance Theorem (by Bousfield and Kan), the Homotopy Colimit Theorem (Thomason), Theorems A and B (Quillen), or the Homotopy Cofinality Theorem (Hirschhorn).
This is the first of a series of papers on enriched infinity categories, seeking to reduce enriched higher category theory to the higher algebra of presentable infinity categories, which is better understood and can be approached via universal properties. In this paper, we introduce enriched presheaves on an enriched infinity category. We prove analogues of most familiar properties of presheaves. For example, we compute limits and colimits of presheaves, prove that all presheaves are colimits of representable presheaves, and prove a version of the Yoneda lemma.
We construct a Grothendieck-Witt space for any stable infinity category with duality. If we apply our construction to perfect complexes over a commutative ring in which 2 is invertible we recover the classical Grothendieck-Witt space. Our Grothendieck-Witt space is a grouplike E-infinity space which is part of a genuine C_2-spectrum, the connective real K-theory spectrum.
We describe a comparison between pretriangulated differential graded categories and certain stable infinity categories. Specifically, we use a model category structure on differential graded categories over k (a field of characteristic 0) where the weak equivalences are the Morita equivalences, and where the fibrant objects are in particular pretriangulated differential graded categories. We show the underlying infinity category of this model category is equivalent to the infinity category of k-linear stable infinity categories.
We study the problem of when triangulated categories admit unique infinity-categorical enhancements. Our results use Lurie's theory of prestable infinity-categories to give conceptual proofs of, and in many cases strengthen, previous work on the subject by Lunts--Orlov and Canonaco--Stellari. We also give a wide range of examples involving quasi-coherent sheaves, categories of almost modules, and local cohomology to illustrate the theory of prestable infinity-categories. Finally, we propose a theory of stable $n$-categories which would interpolate between triangulated categories and stable inf…
We prove a rectification theorem for enriched infinity-categories: If V is a nice monoidal model category, we show that the homotopy theory of infinity-categories enriched in V is equivalent to the familiar homotopy theory of categories strictly enriched in V. It follows, for example, that infinity-categories enriched in spectra or chain complexes are equivalent to spectral categories and dg-categories. A similar method gives a comparison result for enriched Segal categories, which implies that the homotopy theories of n-categories and (infinity,n)-categories defined by iterated infinity-categ…
Given an $\infty$-category with a set of weak equivalences which is stable under pullback, we show that the mapping spaces of the corresponding localization can be described as group completions of $\infty$-categories of spans. Furthermore, we show how these $\infty$-categories of spans are the mapping objects of an $(\infty, 2)$-category, which yields a Segal space model for the localization after a Kan fibrant replacement.
We extend the Quillen Theorem Bn for homotopy fibers of Dwyer, et al. to similar results for homotopy pullbacks and note that these results imply similar results for zigzags in the categories of relative categories and k-relative categories, not only with respect to their Reedy structures but also their Rezk structure, which turns them into models for the theories of (infinity, 1)- and (infinity, k)-categories, respectively.
In this paper we establish a universal characterization of higher algebraic K-theory in the setting of small stable infinity categories. Specifically, we prove that connective algebraic K-theory is the universal additive invariant, i.e., the universal functor with values in spectra which inverts Morita equivalences, preserves filtered colimits, and satisfies Waldhausen's additivity theorem. Similarly, we prove that non-connective algebraic K-theory is the universal localizing invariant, i.e., the universal functor that moreover satisfies the "Thomason-Trobaugh-Neeman" localization theorem. To …
We prove the theorem stated in the title. More precisely, we show the stronger statement that every symmetric monoidal left adjoint functor between presentably symmetric monoidal infinity-categories is represented by a strong symmetric monoidal left Quillen functor between simplicial, combinatorial and left proper symmetric monoidal model categories.
Given symmetric monoidal infinity-categories C and D, subject to mild hypotheses on D, we define an infinity-categorical analog of the Day convolution symmetric monoidal structure on the functor category Fun(C, D). An E_infinity monoid for the Day convolution product is a lax monoidal functor from C to D.
We introduce a notion of fine Tannakian infinity-categories and prove Tannakian characterization results for symmetric monoidal stable infinity-categories over a field of characteristic zero. It connects derived quotient stacks with symmetric monoidal stable infinity-categories which satisfy a certain simple axiom. We also discuss several applications to examples.
The bulk of this paper is devoted to the comparison of several models for the theory of (infinity,2)-categories: that is, higher categories in which all k-morphisms are invertible for k > 2 (the case of (infinity,n)-categories is also considered). Our ultimate goal is to lay the foundations for a study of Tom Goodwillie's calculus of functors. To this end, we have included some simple applications to the theory of first derivatives.

This paper is an expository account of the theory of stable infinity categories. We prove that the homotopy category of a stable infinity category is triangulated, and that the collection of stable infinity categories is closed under a variety of constructions. We also explain how to construct the derived category of an abelian category (with enough projective objects) as the homotopy category of a suitable stable infinity category; moreover, we characterize this stable infinity category by a universal mapping property.
We discuss that there exist at least two different choices in the signs of the induced A-infinity structures in shifting the degree of objects in an A-infinity category. We show that both of these choices are naturalin the sense that they are compatible with the homological perturbation theory of A-infinity categories. These different choices give different triangulated categories out of an A-infinity category.
In this short note we show that E-infinity quasi-categories can be replaced by strictly commutative objects in the larger category of diagrams of simplicial sets indexed by finite sets and injections. This complements earlier work on diagram spaces by Christian Schlichtkrull and the second author.
We adapt the classical framework of algebraic theories to work in the setting of (infinity,1)-categories developed by Joyal and Lurie. This gives a suitable approach for describing highly structured objects from homotopy theory. A central example, treated at length, is the theory of E_infinity spaces: this has a tidy combinatorial description in terms of span diagrams of finite sets. We introduce a theory of distributive laws, allowing us to describe objects with two distributing E_infinity stuctures. From this we produce a theory of E_infinity ring spaces. We also study grouplike objects, and…
After developing the basic theory of locally cartesian localizations of presentable locally cartesian closed infinity-categories, we establish the representability of equivalences and show that univalent families, in the sense of Voevodsky, form a poset isomorphic to the poset of bounded local classes, in the sense of Lurie. It follows that every infinity-topos has a hierarchy of "universal" univalent families, indexed by regular cardinals, and that n-topoi have univalent families classifying (n-2)-truncated maps. We show that univalent families are preserved (and detected) by right adjoints t…
These are notes from an informal mini-course on factorization homology, infinity-categories, and topological field theories. The target audience was imagined to be graduate students who are not homotopy theorists.
The goal of this article is to emphasize the role of cubical sets in enriched categories theory and infinity-categories theory. We show in particular that categories enriched in cubical sets provide a convenient way to describe many infinity-categories appearing in the context of homological algebra.
We describe dual notions of tangent bundle for an infinity-topos, each underlying a tangent infinity-category in the sense of Bauer, Burke and the author. One of those notions is Lurie's tangent bundle functor for presentable infinity-categories, and the other is its adjoint. We calculate that adjoint for injective infinity-toposes, where it is given by applying Lurie's tangent bundle on infinity-categories of points.
The present work re-enacts the classical theory of t-structures reducing the classical definition given in *Faisceaux Pervers* to a rather primitive categorical gadget: suitable reflective factorization systems. This translation is only possible due to the virtues of the infinity-categorical setting. Once the basic theory of t-structure has been developed, a natural direction of research is to develop a comprehensive treatment of t-structure in the "torsio-centric" perspective: we apply the technology of factorization systems to the theory of Postnikov towers, to the proof of the abelianity of…
We construct model category structures on various types of (marked) *-categories. These structures are used to present the infinity categories of (marked) *-categories obtained by inverting (marked) unitary equivalences. We use this presentation to explicitly calculate the \infty-categorical G-fixed points and G-orbits for G-equivariant (marked) *-categories.
The construction of E infinity ring spaces and thus E infinity ring spectra from bipermutative categories gives the most highly structured way of obtaining the K-theory commutative ring spectra. The original construction dates from around 1980 and has never been superseded, but the original details are difficult, obscure, and slightly wrong. We rework the construction in a much more elementary fashion.
In this paper we prove that for any model category, the Bousfield-Kan construction of the homotopy colimit is the absolute left derived functor of the colimit. This is achieved by showing that the Bousfield-Kan homotopy colimit is moreover a realizable homotopy colimit, defined by means of a suitable 2-category of relative categories. In addition, in the case of exact coproducts, we characterize the realizable homotopy colimits that satisfy a cofinality property as those given by a formula following the pattern of Bousfield-Kan construction: they are the composition of a "geometric realization…
We introduce the dendroidal analogs of the notions of complete Segal space and of Segal category, and construct two appropriate model categories for which each of these notions corresponds to the property of being fibrant. We prove that these two model categories are Quillen equivalent to each other, and to the monoidal model category for infinity-operads which we constructed in an earlier paper. By slicing over the monoidal unit objects in these model categories, we derive as immediate corollaries the known comparison results between Joyal's quasi-categories, Rezk's complete Segal spaces, and…
Making use of the theory of noncommutative motives, we characterize the topological Dennis trace map as the unique multiplicative natural transformation from algebraic K-theory to topological Hochschild homology (THH) and the cyclotomic trace map as the unique multiplicative lift through topological cyclic homology (TC). Moreover, we prove that the space of all multiplicative structures on algebraic K-theory is contractible. We also show that the algebraic K-theory functor from small stable infinity categories to spectra is lax symmetric monoidal, which in particular implies that E_n ring spec…
In this paper we develop homotopy theoretical methods for studying diagrams. In particular we explain how to construct homotopy colimits and limits in an arbitrary model category. The key concept we introduce is that of a model approximation. Our key result says that if a category admits a model approximation then so does any diagram category with values in this category. From the homotopy theoretical point of view categories with model approximations have similar properties to those of model categories. They admit homotopy categories (localizations with respect to weak equivalences). They als…
A version of Dwyer-Kan localization in the context of infinity-categories and simplicial categories is presented. Some results of the classical papers by Dwyer and Kan on simplicial localization are reproven and generalized. It is proven that a Quillen pair of model categories gives rise to an adjoint pair of the DK localizations. Also a result on localization of a family of infinity-categories is proven. This, in particular, is applied to localization of symmetric monoidal infinity-categories, where some (partial) results are obtained.
In previous work we showed that the contact category algebra of a quadrangulated surface is isomorphic to the homology of a strand algebra from bordered sutured Floer theory. Being isomorphic to the homology of a differential graded algebra, this contact category algebra has an A-infinity structure, allowing us to combine contact structures not just by gluing, but also by higher-order operations. In this paper we investigate such A-infinity structures and higher order operations on contact structures. We give explicit constructions of such A-infinity structures, and establish some of their pro…
In this paper, we provide a conceptual new construction of the algebraic structure on the pair of the Hochschild cohomology spectrum (cochain complex) and Hochschild homology spectrum, which is analogous to the structure of calculus on a manifold. This algebraic structure is encoded by a two-colored operad introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman. We prove that for a stable idempotent-complete infinity-category, the pair of its Hochschild cohomology and homology spectra naturally admits the structure of algebra over the operad. Moreover, we prove a generalization to the equivariant context.
In our paper "On D-module of categories I", we provide two different methods of constructing D-module structures on the complex computing periodic cyclic homology associated to a family of stable infinity categories. One is based on a canonical extension of factorization homology. Another method uses the pair of Hochschild cohomology and Hochschild homology, Kodaira-Spencer map for a family of stable infinity categories, Koszul dualities, and the relation between dg Lie algebras and pointed formal stacks. In this paper, we prove that two resulting structures coindice.
This paper concerns spherical adjunctions of stable $\infty$-categories and their relation to monadic adjunctions. We begin with a proof of the 2/4 property of spherical adjunctions in the setting of stable $\infty$-categories. The proof is based on the description of spherical adjunctions as 4-periodic semiorthogonal decompositions given by Halpern-Leistner, Shipman and by Dyckerhoff, Kapranov, Schechtman, Soibelman. We then describe a class of examples of spherical adjunctions arising from local systems on spheres. The main result of this paper is a characterization of the sphericalness of a…
In this paper we introduce a functor, called the simplicial nerve of an A-infinity category, defined on the category of (small) A-infinity categories with values in simplicial sets. We prove that the simplicial nerve of any A-infinity category is an infinity category. This construction extends functorially the nerve construction for differential graded categories proposed by J.Lurie in Higher Algebra. We prove that if a differential graded category is pretriangulated in the sense of A.I.Bondal-M.Kapranov, then its nerve is a stable infinity category in the sense of J.Lurie.
The noncommutative stable homotopy category $\mathtt{NSH}$ is a triangulated category that is the universal receptacle for triangulated homology theories on separable $C^*$-algebras. We show that the triangulated category $\mathtt{NSH}$ is topological as defined by Schwede using the formalism of (stable) infinity categories. More precisely, we construct a stable presentable infinity category of noncommutative spectra and show that $\mathtt{NSH}^{op}$ sits inside its homotopy category as a full triangulated subcategory, from which the above result can be deduced. We also introduce a presentable…
We prove that topological Hochschild homology (THH) arises from a presheaf of circles on a certain combinatorial category, which gives a universal construction of THH for any enriched infinity category. Our results rely crucially on an elementary, model-independent framework for enriched higher category theory, which may be of independent interest.
In this brief postscript to our paper "Integral transforms and Drinfeld centers in derived algebraic geometry", we describe a Morita equivalence for derived, categorified matrix algebras implied by theory developed since its appearance. We work in the setting of perfect stacks X and their stable infinity-categories Q(X) of quasicoherent sheaves. Perfect stacks include all varieties and common stacks in characteristic zero, and their stable infinity-categories of sheaves are well behaved refinements of their quasicoherent derived categories, satisfying natural analogues of common properties of …
The homotopy theory of infinity-operads is defined by extending Joyal's homotopy theory of infinity-categories to the category of dendroidal sets. We prove that the category of dendroidal sets is endowed with a model category structure whose fibrant objects are the infinity-operads (i.e. dendroidal inner Kan complexes). This extends the theory of infinity-categories in the sense that the Joyal model category structure on simplicial sets whose fibrant objects are the infinity-categories is recovered from the model category structure on dendroidal sets by simply slicing over the point.
We compare two approaches to the homotopy theory of infinity-operads. One of them, the theory of dendroidal sets, is based on an extension of the theory of simplicial sets and infinity-categories which replaces simplices by trees. The other is based on a certain homotopy theory of marked simplicial sets over the nerve of Segal's category Gamma. In this paper we prove that for operads without constants these two theories are equivalent, in the precise sense of the existence of a zig-zag of Quillen equivalences between the respective model categories.
The goal of the present paper is to compare, in a precise way, two notions of operads up to homotopy which appear in the literature. Namely, we construct a functor from the category of strict unital homotopy colored operads to the category of infinity-operads. The former notion, that we make precise, is the operadic generalization of the notion of A-infinity-categories and the latter notion was defined by Moerdijk--Weiss in order to generalize the simplicial notion of infinity-category of Joyal--Lurie. This functor extends in two directions the simplicial nerve of Faonte--Lurie for A-infinity-…
We describe several equivalent models for the infinity-category of infinity-local systems of chain complexes over a space using the framework of quasi-categories. We prove that the given models are equivalent as infinity-categories by exploiting the relationship between the differential graded nerve functor and the cobar construction. We use one of these models to calculate the quasi-categorical colimit of an infinity-local system in terms of a twisted tensor product.
We exhibit the simplex category $Δ$ and Segal's category $Γ$ as $\infty$-categorical localizations of the dendroidal categories $Ω_π$ and $Ω$ introduced by Moerdijk and Weiss. As an application we obtain an equivalence of $\infty$-categories between invertible $\infty$-operads and the $2$-Segal spaces of Dyckerhoff and Kapranov. Finally, we describe a cyclic version of the dendroidal category and explain how it $\infty$-localizes to Connes's cyclic category $Λ$.
We define a tracelike transformation to be a natural family of conjugation invariant maps $T_{x,C}: hom_C(x,x) \to hom_C(1,1)$ for all dualisable objects $x$ in any symmetric monoidal infinity-category $C$. This generalises the trace from linear algebra that assigns a scalar $Tr(f) \in k$ to any endomorphism $f:V \to V$ of a finite-dimensional $k$-vector space. Our main theorem computes the moduli space of tracelike transformations using the one-dimensional cobordism hypothesis with singularities. As a consequence we show that the trace $Tr$ can be uniquely extended to a tracelike transformati…
We establish a canonical and unique tensor product for commutative monoids and groups in an infinity-category C which generalizes the ordinary tensor product of abelian groups. Using this tensor product we show that E_n-(semi)ring objects in C give rise to E_n-ring spectrum objects in C. In the case that C is the infinity-category of spaces this produces a multiplicative infinite loop space machine which can be applied to the algebraic K-theory of rings and ring spectra. The main tool we use to establish these results is the theory of smashing localizations of presentable infinity-categories. …
