In this work, we prove a generalization of Quillen's Theorem A to 2-categories equipped with a special set of morphisms which we think of as weak equivalences, providing sufficient conditions for a 2-functor to induce an equivalence on $(\infty,1)$-localizations. When restricted to 1-categories with all morphisms marked, our theorem retrieves the classical Theorem A of Quillen. We additionally state and provide evidence for a new conjecture: the cofinality conjecture, which describes the relation between a conjectural theory of marked $(\infty,2)$-colimits and our generalization of Theorem A.
We prove that four different ways of defining Cartesian fibrations and the Cartesian model structure are all Quillen equivalent: On marked simplicial sets, on bisimplicial spaces, on bisimplicial sets, on marked simplicial spaces. The main way to prove these equivalences is by using the Quillen equivalences between quasi-categories and complete Segal spaces as defined by Joyal-Tierney and the straightening construction due to Lurie.
We construct model category structures on various types of (marked) *-categories. These structures are used to present the infinity categories of (marked) *-categories obtained by inverting (marked) unitary equivalences. We use this presentation to explicitly calculate the \infty-categorical G-fixed points and G-orbits for G-equivariant (marked) *-categories.
Given a marked $\infty$-category $\mathcal{D}^{\dagger}$ (i.e. an $\infty$-category equipped with a specified collection of morphisms) and a functor $F: \mathcal{D} \to \mathbb{B}$ with values in an $\infty$-bicategory, we define $\operatorname{colim}^{\dagger} F$, the marked colimit of $F$. We provide a definition of weighted colimits in $\infty$-bicategories when the indexing diagram is an $\infty$-category and show that they can be computed in terms of marked colimits. In the maximally marked case $\mathcal{D}^{\sharp}$, our construction retrieves the $\infty$-categorical colimit of $F$ in …
We provide an explicit formula for localizing $A^1$-homotopy invariants of topological Fukaya categories of marked surfaces. Following a proposal of Kontsevich, this differential $\mathbb Z$-graded category is defined as global sections of a constructible cosheaf of dg categories on any spine of the surface. Our theorem utilizes this sheaf-theoretic description to reduce the calculation of invariants to the local case when the surface is a boundary-marked disk. At the heart of the proof lies a theory of localization for topological Fukaya categories which is a combinatorial analog of Thomason-…
We give a new criterion guaranteeing existence of model structures left-induced along a functor admitting both adjoints. This works under the hypothesis that the functor induces idempotent adjunctions at the homotopy category level. As an application, we construct new model structures on cubical sets, prederivators, marked simplicial sets and simplicial spaces modeling $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-groupoids.
We establish a novel relation between the cluster categories associated with marked surfaces and the topological Fukaya categories of the surfaces. We consider a generalization of the triangulated cluster category of the surface by a $2$-Calabi-Yau extriangulated/exact $\infty$-category, which arises via Amiot's construction from the relative Ginzburg algebra of the triangulated surface. This category is shown to be equivalent to the $1$-periodic version of the topological Fukaya category of the marked surface, as well as to Wu's Higgs category. We classify the cluster tilting objects in this …
We extend the Quillen Theorem Bn for homotopy fibers of Dwyer, et al. to similar results for homotopy pullbacks and note that these results imply similar results for zigzags in the categories of relative categories and k-relative categories, not only with respect to their Reedy structures but also their Rezk structure, which turns them into models for the theories of (infinity, 1)- and (infinity, k)-categories, respectively.
The aim of these notes is to introduce the intuition motivating the notion of a "complicial set", a simplicial set with certain marked "thin" simplices that witness a composition relation between the simplices on their boundary. By varying the marking conventions, complicial sets can be used to model $(\infty,n)$-categories for each $n \geq 0$, including $n=\infty$. For this reason, complicial sets present a fertile setting for thinking about weak infinite dimensional categories in varying dimensions. This overture is presented in three acts: the first introducing simplicial models of higher c…
We prove general adjoint functor theorems for weakly (co)complete $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of (co)complete $\infty$-categories, so these $n$-categories do not admit all small (co)limits in general. We also introduce Brown representability for (homotopy) $n$-categories and prove a Brown representability theorem for localizations of compactly generated $n$-categories. This class of $n$-categories includes the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable $\infty$-categories if $n \geq 2$, and the homotopy $n$-categories of presentable stable $\in…
Adjoint functor theorems give necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor to admit an adjoint. In this paper we prove general adjoint functor theorems for functors between $\infty$-categories. One of our main results is an $\infty$-categorical generalization of Freyd's classical General Adjoint Functor Theorem. As an application of this result, we recover Lurie's adjoint functor theorems for presentable $\infty$-categories. We also discuss the comparison between adjunctions of $\infty$-categories and homotopy adjunctions, and give a treatment of Brown representability for $\infty$-catego…
We prove a generalization of Quillen's Theorem B to strict $\infty$-categories. More generally, we show that under similar hypothesis as for Theorem B, the comma construction for strict $\infty$-categories, that we introduced with Maltsiniotis in a previous paper, is the homotopy pullback with respect to Thomason equivalences. We give several applications of these results, including the construction of new models for certain Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces.
This paper is the second in a series of two papers about generalizing Quillen's Theorem A to strict $\infty$-categories. In the first one, we presented a proof of this Theorem A of a simplicial nature, direct but somewhat ad hoc. In the current paper, we give a conceptual proof of an $\infty$-categorical nature of the same theorem. This proof is based on the theory of join and slices for strict $\infty$-categories developed by the authors in a previous paper, and on a comma construction for strict $\infty$-categories generalizing classical comma categories and Gray's comma 2-categories. This $…
We consider random filtered complexes built over marked point processes on Euclidean spaces. Examples of our filtered complexes include a filtration of $\check{\textrm{C}}$ech complexes of a family of sets with various sizes, growths, and shapes. We establish the law of large numbers for persistence diagrams as the size of the convex window observing a marked point process tends to infinity.
The aim of this paper is to prove a generalization of the famous Theorem A of Quillen for strict $\infty$-categories. This result is central to the homotopy theory of strict $\infty$-categories developed by the authors. The proof presented here is of a simplicial nature and uses Steiner's theory of augmented directed complexes. In a subsequent paper, we will prove the same result by purely $\infty$-categorical methods.
While not obvious from its initial motivation in linear algebra, there are many context where iterated traces can be defined. In this paper we prove a very general theorem about iterated 2-categorical traces. We show that many Lefschetz-type theorems in the literature are consequences of this result and the new perspective we provide allows for immediate spectral generalizations.
We describe the class of semi-stable model categories, which generalize the equivalence of finite products and coproducts in abelian and stable model categories, and use this to establish Morita equivalences among categories of functors. We provide a construction of pairs of small categories--known as conjugate pairs--whose associated categories of diagrams are Quillen equivalent in the semi-stable setting. We frame our development in the context of Morita theory, following Slominska's work on similar questions for categories of functors enriched over and taking values in R-modules.
We develop a theory of Mackey functors on epiorbital categories which simultaneously generalizes the theory of genuine $G$-spectra for a finite group $G$ and the theory of $n$-excisive functors on the category of spectra. Using a new theory of stratifications of a stable $\infty$-category along a finite poset, we prove a simultaneous generalization of two reconstruction theorems: one by Abram and Kriz on recovering $G$-spectra from structure on their geometric fixed point spectra for abelian $G$, and one by Arone and Ching that recovers an $n$-excisive functor from structure on its derivatives…
We prove that a model structure on a relative $\infty$-category $(M,W)$ gives an efficient and computable way of accessing the hom-spaces $hom_{M[[W^{-1}]]}(x,y)$ in the localization. More precisely, we show that when the source $x \in M$ is *cofibrant* and the target $y \in M$ is *fibrant*, then this hom-space is a "quotient" of the hom-space $hom_M(x,y)$ by either of a *left homotopy relation* or a *right homotopy relation*.
We introduce a notion of "weak model category" which is a weakening of the notion of Quillen model category, still sufficient to define a homotopy category, Quillen adjunctions, Quillen equivalences and most of the usual construction of categorical homotopy theory. Both left and right semi-model categories are weak model categories, and the opposite of a weak model category is again a weak model category. The main advantages of weak model categories is that they are easier to construct than Quillen model categories. In particular we give some simple criteria on two weak factorization systems f…

The purpose of this article is to present ideas towards obtaining a model category structure on the category of small strict n-categories, generalizing the one obtained by Thomason on ordinary categories. Following ideas of Grothendieck and Cisinski, we obtain an "abstract Thomason theorem", which easily implies the classical Thomason theorem. We deduce a 2-categorical Thomason theorem, an incorrect proof of which has been published by K. Worytkiewicz, K. Hess, P. Parent and A. Tonks. For n > 2, we isolate sufficient conditions to obtain an n-categorical Thomason theorem. These conditions will…
We introduce categorical models of $N_\infty$ spaces, which we call normed symmetric monoidal categories (NSMCs). These are ordinary symmetric monoidal categories equipped with compatible families of norm maps, and when specialized to a particular class of examples, they reveal a connection between the equivariant symmetric monoidal categories of Guillou-May-Merling-Osorno and those of Hill-Hopkins. We also give an operadic interpretation of the Mac Lane coherence theorem and generalize it to include NSMCs. Among other things, this theorem ensures that the classifying space of a NSMC is a $N_\…
Like categories, small 2-categories have well-understood classifying spaces. In this paper, we deal with homotopy types represented by 2-diagrams of 2-categories. Our results extend to homotopy colimits of 2-functors lower categorical analogues that have been classically used in algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory, such as the Homotopy Invariance Theorem (by Bousfield and Kan), the Homotopy Colimit Theorem (Thomason), Theorems A and B (Quillen), or the Homotopy Cofinality Theorem (Hirschhorn).
This thesis is devoted to the proof of a theorem showing the existence of a closed model category structure for weakly enriched categories. It requires first of all the definitions of weakly enriched categories and equivalences of weakly enriched categories such that these definitions recover some existing notions of higher order weak categories, for example Segal categories, Tamsamani n-categories and strict n-categories. In order to prove our theorem, we elaborate a theory of plans for cell addition following the approach of the small object argument a la Quillen. We conclude this work with …
From a bimodule $M$ over an exact category $C$, we define an exact category $C\ltimes M$ with a projection down to $C$. This construction classifies certain split square zero extensions of exact categories. We show that the trace map induces an equivalence between the relative $K$-theory of $C\ltimes M$ and its relative topological cyclic homology. When applied to the bimodule $\hom(-,-\otimes_AM)$ on the category of finitely generated projective modules over a ring $A$ one recovers the classical Dundas-McCarthy theorem for split square zero extensions of rings.
We provide a fairly self-contained account of the localisation and cofinality theorems for the algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-theory of stable $\infty$-categories. It is based on a general formula for the evaluation of an additive functor on a Verdier quotient closely following work of Waldhausen. We also include a new proof of the additivity theorem of $\mathrm{K}$-theory, strongly inspired by Ranicki's algebraic Thom construction, a short proof of the universality theorem of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, and demonstrate that the cofinality theorem can be derived from the universal property alone.
We study distances on zigzag persistence modules from the viewpoint of derived categories and Auslander--Reiten quivers. The derived category of ordinary persistence modules is derived equivalent to that of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules, depending on a classical tilting module. Through this derived equivalence, we define and compute distances on the derived category of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules and prove an algebraic stability theorem. We also compare our distance with the distance for purely zigzag persistence modules introduced by Botnan--Lesnick and the sheaf-theoretic con…
We define parametrized cobordism categories and study their formal properties as bivariant theories. Bivariant transformations to a strongly excisive bivariant theory give rise to characteristic classes of smooth bundles with strong additivity properties. In the case of cobordisms between manifolds with boundary, we prove that such a bivariant transformation is uniquely determined by its value at the universal disk bundle. This description of bivariant transformations yields a short proof of the Dwyer-Weiss-Williams family index theorem for the parametrized A-theory Euler characteristic of a s…
Smooth and proper dg-algebras have an Euler class valued in the Hochschild homology of the algebra. This Euler class is worthy of this name since it satisfies many familiar properties including compatibility with the familiar pairing on the Hochschild homology of the algebra and that of its opposite. This compatibility is the Riemann-Roch theorems of Shklyarov and Petit. In this paper we prove a broad generalization of these Riemann-Roch theorems. We generalize from the bicategory of dg-algebras and their bimodules to monoidal bicategories and from Euler class to traces of non identity maps. O…
The purpose of this short note is to present two existence results concerning symplectic and lagrangian structures in the derived setting, in situations where the constructions of [Ca] and [PTVV] do not apply. For this we show that symplectic structures can be constructed out of Calabi-Yau structures on sheaves of dg-categories, or out of \emph{orientations} on sheaves of rigid dg-categories. These results follow from two main theorems: the HKR theorem and the cyclotomic aspect of traces in rigid infty-categories.
