We consider equidistribution of angles for certain hyperbolic lattice points in the upper half-plane. Extending work of Friedlander and Iwaniec we show that for the full modular group equidistribution persists for matrices with $a^2+b^2+c^2+d^2=p$ with $p$ prime; at least if we assume sufficiently good lower bounds in the hyperbolic prime number theorem by Friedlander and Iwaniec. We also investigate related questions for a specific arithmetic co-compact group and its double cosets by hyperbolic subgroups. The general equidistribution problem was studied by Good, and in this case, we show, that equidistribution holds unconditionally when restricting to primes.
We aim at studying automorphic forms of bounded analytic conductor in the division quaternion algebra setting. We prove the equidistribution of the universal family with respect to an explicit and geometrically meaningful measure. It leads to answering the Sato-Tate conjectures in this case, and contains the counting law of the universal family, with a power savings error term in the totally definite case.
We develop the relationship between quaternionic hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension $2$. We prove a Mertens counting formula for the rational points over a definite quaternion algebra $A$ over $\mathbb Q$ in the light cone of quaternionic Hermitian forms, as well as a Neville equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over $A$ in quaternionic Heisenberg groups.
In this book, we study equidistribution and counting problems concerning locally geodesic arcs in negatively curved spaces endowed with potentials, and we deduce, from the special case of tree quotients, various arithmetic applications to equidistribution and counting problems in non-Archimedean local fields.
We provide a new and simple automorphic method using Eisenstein series to study the equidistribution of modular symbols modulo primes, which we apply to prove an average version of a conjecture of Mazur and Rubin. More precisely, we prove that modular symbols corresponding to a Hecke basis of weight 2 cusp forms are asymptotically jointly equidistributed mod $p$ while we allow restrictions on the location of the cusps. As an application, we obtain a residual equidistribution result for Dedekind sums. Furthermore, we calculate the variance of the distribution and show a surprising bias with con…
We strongly develop the relationship between complex hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on complex hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension $2$. We prove a Mertens' formula for the integer points over a quadratic imaginary number fields $K$ in the light cone of Hermitian forms, as well as an equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over $K$ in Heisenberg groups. We give a counting formula for the cubic points over $K$ in the complex projective plane whose Galois conjugates are orthogonal…
We establish effective counting and equidistribution results for lattice points in families of domains in hyperbolic spaces, of any dimension and over any field. The domains we focus on are defined as product sets with respect to the Iwasawa decomposition. Several classical Diophantine problems can be reduced to counting lattice points in such domains, including distribution of shortest solution to the gcd equation, and angular distribution of primitive vectors in the plane. We give an explicit and effective solution to these problems, and extend them to imaginary quadratic number fields. Furt…
In this paper we study the equidistribution of expanding horospheres in infinite volume geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds and apply it to the orbital counting problem in apollonian sphere packing.
We study the growth of the number of conjugacy classes of infinite dihedral subgroups of lattices in PSL(2,R), generalizing earlier work of Sarnak and Bourgain-Kontorovich on the growth of the number of reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface. We also prove that reciprocal geodesics are equidistributed in the unit tangent bundle.
We use a dictionary between lattice point counting inside dilated d-dimensional ellipsoids (Euclidean counting) and counting of lifts of a closed horosphere that intersect a ball of increasing radius, to obtain two types of results. Firstly, via an $L^2$-integral error estimate for Euclidean counting, we prove effective equidistribution results for a family of expanding horospheres in the locally symmetric space SO(d) \ SL(d,R) / SL(d,Z). Secondly, we derive from uniform error estimates in Euclidean counting, error terms for counting SL(d,Z)-orbit points in a certain increasing family of subse…
We count flags of primitive lattices, which are objects of the form ${0}=Λ^{(0)}<Λ^{(1)}< \cdots <Λ^{(\ell)}= \mathbb{Z}^n$, where every $Λ^{(i)}$ is a primitive lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The counting is with respect to two different natural height functions, allowing us to give a new proof of the Manin conjecture for flag varieties over rational numbers. We deduce the equidistribution of rational points in flag varieties, as well as the equidistribution of the shapes of the successive quotient lattices, $Λ^{(i)}/Λ^{(i-1)}$. In doing so, we generalize previous work of Schmidt, as well as our …
A "shear" is a unipotent translate of a cuspidal geodesic ray in the quotient of the hyperbolic plane by a non-uniform discrete subgroup of PSL(2,R), possibly of infinite co-volume. We prove the regularized equidistribution of shears under large translates with effective (that is, power saving) rates. We also give applications to weighted second moments of GL(2) automorphic L-functions, and to counting lattice points on locally affine symmetric spaces.
We consider the analogue of the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture for holomorphic Hecke eigenforms on compact arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. We show that this conjecture follows from nontrivial bounds for Hecke eigenvalues summed over quadratic progressions. Our reduction provides an analogue for the compact case of a criterion established by Luo--Sarnak for the case of the non-compact modular surface. The novelty is that known proofs of such criteria have depended crucially upon Fourier expansions, which are not available in the compact case. Unconditionally, we establish a twisted varian…
We develop the relation between hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic equidistribution problems that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on real hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension up to 5. We prove generalisations of Mertens' formula for quadratic imaginary number fields and definite quaternion algebras over the rational numbers, counting results of quadratic irrationals with respect to two different natural complexities, and counting results of representations of (algebraic) integers by binary quadratic, Hermitian and Hamiltonian forms with error bounds. For each such statement, …
Let G be the identity component of SO(n,1), acting linearly on a finite dimensional real vector space V. Consider a vector w_0 in V such that the stabilizer of w_0 is a symmetric subgroup of G or the stabilizer of the line Rw_0 is a parabolic subgroup of G. For any non-elementary discrete subgroup Gamma of G with w_0Gamma discrete, we compute an asymptotic formula for the number of points in w_0Gamma of norm at most T, provided that the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure on the associated hyperbolic manifold and the Gamma skinning size of w_0 are finite. The main ergodic ingredient in our approac…
A method is described to sum multi-dimensional arithmetic functions subject to hyperbolic summation conditions, provided that asymptotic formulae in rectangular boxes are available. In combination with the circle method, the new method is a versatile tool to count rational points on algebraic varieties defined by multi-homogeneous diagonal equations.
In this paper we prove the existence of asymptotic moments, and an estimate on the tails of the limiting distribution, for a specific class of almost periodic functions. Then we introduce the hyperbolic circle problem, proving an estimate on the asymptotic variance of the remainder that improves a result of Chamizo. Applying the results of the first part we prove the existence of limiting distribution and asymptotic moments for three functions that are integrated versions of the remainder, and were considered originally (with due adaptations to our settings) by Wolfe, Phillips and Rudnick, and…
We prove prime geodesic theorems counting primitive closed geodesics on a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with length and holonomy in prescribed intervals, which are allowed to shrink. Our results imply effective equidistribution of holonomy and have both the rate of shrinking and the strength of the error term fully symmetric in length and holonomy.
The hyperbolic lattice point problem asks to estimate the size of the orbit $Γz$ inside a hyperbolic disk of radius $\cosh^{-1}(X/2)$ for $Γ$ a discrete subgroup of $\hbox{PSL}_2(R)$. Selberg proved the estimate $O(X^{2/3})$ for the error term for cofinite or cocompact groups. This has not been improved for any group and any center. In this paper local averaging over the center is investigated for $\hbox{PSL}_2(Z)$. The result is that the error term can be improved to $O(X^{7/12+ε})$. The proof uses surprisingly strong input e.g. results on the quantum ergodicity of Maaß cusp forms and estimat…
Let $Γ$ be a cocompact discrete subgroup of $\mathrm{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{C})$ and denote by $\mathcal{H}$ the three dimensional upper half-space. For a $p\in\mathcal{H}$, we count the number of points in the orbit $Γp$, according to their distance, $\operatorname{arccosh} X$, from a totally geodesic hyperplane. The main term in $n$ dimensions was obtained by Herrmann for any subset of a totally geodesic submanifold. We prove a pointwise error term of $O(X^{3/2})$ by extending the method of Huber and Chatzakos-Petridis to three dimensions. By applying Chamizo's large sieve inequalities we obtain t…
For a geometrically finite group Gamma of G=SO(n,1), we survey recent developments on counting and equidistribution problems for orbits of Gamma in a homogeneous space H\G where H is trivial, symmetric or horospherical. Main applications are found in an affine sieve on orbits of thin groups as well as in sphere counting problems for sphere packings invariant under a geometrically finite group. In our sphere counting problems, spheres can be ordered with respect to a general conformal metric.
Let G be a semisimple group over rational numbers and H is a subgroup over rational numbers. Given a representation of G and an integral vector x whose stabilizer is equal to H. In this paper we investigate the asymptotic of integral points on Gx with bounded height. We find its asymptotic up to an implicit constant when H is large in G but we allow the presence of intermediate subgroups. This is achieved by a novel combination of two equidistribution results in two different settings: one is that of Eskin, Mozes and Shah on a Lie group modulo a lattice and the other one is a result of Chamber…
We consider circles of common centre and increasing radius on a compact hyperbolic surface and, more generally, on its unit tangent bundle. We establish a precise asymptotics for their rate of equidistribution. Our result holds for translates of any circle arc by arbitrary elements of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. Our proof relies on a spectral method pioneered by Ratner and subsequently developed by Burger in the study of geodesic and horocycle flows. We further derive statistical limit theorems, with compactly supported limiting distribution, for appropriately rescaled circle averages of suffic…
In 2014, Pila and Tsimerman gave a proof of the Ax-Schanuel conjecture for the $j$-function and, with Mok, have recently announced a proof of its generalization to any (pure) Shimura variety. We refer to this generalization as the hyperbolic Ax-Schanuel conjecture. In this article, we show that the hyperbolic Ax-Schanuel conjecture can be used to reduce the Zilber-Pink conjecture for Shimura varieties to a problem of point counting. We further show that this point counting problem can be tackled in a number of cases using the Pila-Wilkie counting theorem and several arithmetic conjectures. Our…
It is known that the lengths of closed geodesics of an arithmetic hyperbolic orbifold are related to Salem numbers. We initiate a quantitative study of this phenomenon. We show that any non-compact arithmetic $3$-dimensional orbifold defines $c Q^{1/2} + O(Q^{1/4})$ square-rootable Salem numbers of degree $4$ which are less than or equal to $Q$. This quantity can be compared to the total number of such Salem numbers, which is shown to be asymptotic to $\frac{4}{3}Q^{3/2}+O(Q)$. Assuming the gap conjecture of Marklof, we can extend these results to compact arithmetic $3$-orbifolds. As an applic…

We prove various orbital counting statements for Fuchsian groups of the second kind. These are of independent interest, and also are used in the companion paper [BourgainKontorovich2009] to produce primes in the Affine Linear Sieve.
