Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group, and $Γ<G$ be a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup with respect to a minimal parabolic subgroup. We describe the asymptotic behavior of matrix coefficients $\langle (\exp tv). f_1, f_2\rangle$ in $L^2(Γ\backslash G)$ as $t\to \infty$ for any $f_1, f_2\in C_c(Γ\backslash G)$ and any vector $v$ in the interior of the limit cone of $Γ$. These asymptotics involve higher rank analogues of Burger-Roblin measures which are introduced in this paper. As an application, for any affine symmetric subgroup $H$ of $G$, we obtain a bisector counting result for $Γ$-orbits with respect to the corresponding generalized Cartan decomposition of $G$. Moreover, we obtain analogues of the results of Duke-Rudnick-Sarnak and Eskin-McMullen for counting discrete $Γ$-orbits in affine symmetric spaces $H\backslash G$.
Weprovethattheasymptoticsofergodicintegralsalonganinvariant foliation of a toral Anosov diffeomorphism, or of a pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism on a compact orientable surface of higher genus, are determined (up to a logarithmic error) by the action of the diffeomorphism on the cohomology of the surface. As a consequence of our argument and of the results of Giulietti and Liverani [GL] on horospherical averages, toral Anosov diffeomorphisms have no Ruelle resonances in the open interval $(1,e^{h_{top}} )$.
We study the growth of the number of conjugacy classes of infinite dihedral subgroups of lattices in PSL(2,R), generalizing earlier work of Sarnak and Bourgain-Kontorovich on the growth of the number of reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface. We also prove that reciprocal geodesics are equidistributed in the unit tangent bundle.
In this book, we study equidistribution and counting problems concerning locally geodesic arcs in negatively curved spaces endowed with potentials, and we deduce, from the special case of tree quotients, various arithmetic applications to equidistribution and counting problems in non-Archimedean local fields.
We show that if an eventually positive, non-arithmetic, locally Hölder continuous potential for a topologically mixing countable Markov shift with (BIP) has an entropy gap at infinity, then one may apply the renewal theorem of Kesseböhmer and Kombrink to obtain counting and equidistribution results. We apply these general results to obtain counting and equidistribution results for cusped Hitchin representations, and more generally for cusped Anosov representations of geometrically finite Fuchsian groups.
In this paper we study the equidistribution of expanding horospheres in infinite volume geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds and apply it to the orbital counting problem in apollonian sphere packing.
We establish effective counting and equidistribution results for lattice points in families of domains in hyperbolic spaces, of any dimension and over any field. The domains we focus on are defined as product sets with respect to the Iwasawa decomposition. Several classical Diophantine problems can be reduced to counting lattice points in such domains, including distribution of shortest solution to the gcd equation, and angular distribution of primitive vectors in the plane. We give an explicit and effective solution to these problems, and extend them to imaginary quadratic number fields. Furt…
We use a dictionary between lattice point counting inside dilated d-dimensional ellipsoids (Euclidean counting) and counting of lifts of a closed horosphere that intersect a ball of increasing radius, to obtain two types of results. Firstly, via an $L^2$-integral error estimate for Euclidean counting, we prove effective equidistribution results for a family of expanding horospheres in the locally symmetric space SO(d) \ SL(d,R) / SL(d,Z). Secondly, we derive from uniform error estimates in Euclidean counting, error terms for counting SL(d,Z)-orbit points in a certain increasing family of subse…
The main result of this article is that if a $3$-manifold $M$ supports an Anosov flow, then the number of conjugacy classes in the fundamental group of $M$ grows exponentially fast with the length of the shortest orbit representative, hereby answering a question raised by Plante and Thurston in 1972. In fact we show that, when the flow is transitive, the exponential growth rate is exactly the topological entropy of the flow. We also show that taking only the shortest orbit representatives in each conjugacy classes still yields Bowen's version of the measure of maximal entropy. These results ar…
We prove the equidistribution of (weighted) periodic orbits of the geodesic ow on noncompact negatively curved manifolds toward equilibrium states in the narrow topology, i.e. in the dual of bounded continuous functions. We deduce an exact asymptotic counting for periodic orbits (weighted or not), which was previously known only for geometrically nite manifolds.
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group without compact factor and $Γ< G$ a torsion-free, cocompact, irreducible lattice. According to Selberg, periodic orbits of regular Weyl chamber flows live on maximal flat periodic tori of the space of Weyl chambers. We prove that these flat periodic tori equidistribute exponentially fast towards the quotient of the Haar measure. From the equidistribution formula, we deduce a higher rank prime geodesic theorem. These counting and equidistribution results also hold in the non cocompact, finite covolume case for $G=\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb{R})$ and $Γ<\mathrm{SL}(d,…
Let G be the identity component of SO(n,1), acting linearly on a finite dimensional real vector space V. Consider a vector w_0 in V such that the stabilizer of w_0 is a symmetric subgroup of G or the stabilizer of the line Rw_0 is a parabolic subgroup of G. For any non-elementary discrete subgroup Gamma of G with w_0Gamma discrete, we compute an asymptotic formula for the number of points in w_0Gamma of norm at most T, provided that the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure on the associated hyperbolic manifold and the Gamma skinning size of w_0 are finite. The main ergodic ingredient in our approac…
Let $Λ$ be a quasi-projective variety and assume that, either $Λ$ is a subvariety of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_d$ of degree $d$ rational maps, or $Λ$ parametrizes an algebraic family $(f_λ)_{λ\inΛ}$ of degree $d$ rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We prove the equidistribution of parameters having $p$ distinct neutral cycles towards the $p$-th bifurcation current letting the periods of the cycles go to $\infty$, with an exponential speed of convergence. We deduce several fundamental consequences of this result on equidistribution and counting of hyperbolic components. A key step of the proof…
Let $X$ be a proper, geodesically complete Hadamard space, and $\ Γ<\mbox{Is}(X)$ a discrete subgroup of isometries of $X$ with the fixed point of a rank one isometry of $X$ in its infinite limit set. In this paper we prove that if $Γ$ has non-arithmetic length spectrum, then the Ricks' Bowen-Margulis measure -- which generalizes the well-known Bowen-Margulis measure in the CAT$(-1)$ setting -- is mixing. If in addition the Ricks' Bowen-Margulis measure is finite, then we also have equidistribution of $Γ$-orbit points in $X$, which in particular yields an asymptotic estimate for the orbit coun…
We compute the asymptotics, as R tends to infinity, of the number of closed geodesics in Moduli space of length at most R, or equivalently the number of pseudo-Anosov elements of the mapping class group of translation length at most R.
We prove a local trace formula for Anosov flows. It relates Pollicott--Ruelle resonances to the periods of closed orbits. As an application, we show that the counting function for resonances in a sufficiently wide strip cannot have a sublinear growth. In particular, for any Anosov flow there exist strips with infinitely many resonances.
For a geometrically finite group Gamma of G=SO(n,1), we survey recent developments on counting and equidistribution problems for orbits of Gamma in a homogeneous space H\G where H is trivial, symmetric or horospherical. Main applications are found in an affine sieve on orbits of thin groups as well as in sphere counting problems for sphere packings invariant under a geometrically finite group. In our sphere counting problems, spheres can be ordered with respect to a general conformal metric.
We discuss analogues of the prime number theorem for a hyperbolic rational map f of degree at least two on the Riemann sphere. More precisely, we provide counting estimates for the number of primitive periodic orbits of f ordered by their multiplier, and also obtain equidistribution of the associated holonomies; both estimates have power savings error terms. Our counting and equidistribution results will follow from a study of dynamical zeta functions that have been twisted by characters of $S^1$. We will show that these zeta functions are non-vanishing on a half plane $\Re(s) > δ- ε$, where $…
The aim of this paper is to study growth properties of group extensions of hyperbolic dynamical systems, where we do not assume that the extension satisfies the symmetry conditions seen, for example, in the work of Stadlbauer on symmetric group extensions and of the authors on geodesic flows. Our main application is to growth rates of periodic orbits for covers of an Anosov flow: we reduce the problem of counting periodic orbits in an amenable cover $X$ to counting in a maximal abelian subcover $X^{\mathrm{ab}}$. In this way, we obtain an equivalence for the Gurevič entropy: $h(X)=h(X^{\mathrm…
We prove that square-tiled surfaces having fixed combinatorics of horizontal cylinder decomposition and tiled with smaller and smaller squares become asymptotically equidistributed in any ambient linear $GL(\mathbb R)$-invariant suborbifold defined over $\mathbb Q$ in the moduli space of Abelian differentials. Moreover, we prove that the combinatorics of the horizontal and of the vertical decompositions are asymptotically uncorrelated. As a consequence, we prove the existence of an asymptotic distribution for the combinatorics of a "random" interval exchange transformation with integer lengths…
For Anosov flows on compact Riemann manifolds we study the rate of decay along the flow of diameters of balls $B^s(x,\ep)$ on local stable manifolds at Lyapunov regular points $x$. We prove that this decay rate is similar for all sufficiently small values of $ε> 0$. From this and the main result in \cite{kn:St1}, we derive strong spectral estimates for Ruelle transfer operators for contact Anosov flows with Lipschitz local stable holonomy maps. These apply in particular to geodesic flows on compact locally symmetric manifolds of strictly negative curvature. As is now well known, such spectral …
Consider $G=\SL_{ d }(\mathbb R)$ and $ Γ=\SL_{ d }(\mathbb Z)$. It was recently shown by the second-named author \cite{s} that for some diagonal subgroups $\{g_t\}\subset G$ and unipotent subgroups $U\subset G$, $g_t$-trajectories of almost all points on all $U$-orbits on $G/Γ$ are equidistributed with respect to continuous compactly supported functions $φ$ on $G/Γ$. In this paper we strengthen this result in two directions: by exhibiting an error rate of equidistribution when $φ$ is smooth and compactly supported, and by proving equidistribution with respect to certain unbounded functions, n…
We obtain asymptotic counting results with error terms for complex orthospectrum for Schottky groups and orbit counting function for quadratic polynomials. Moreover, we prove equidistribution of holonomy associated to these dynamical systems. Our results are obtained by considering generalized $L$-functions coming from the Basmajian-type identities introduced by the author in \cite{He}. We study the associated summatory functions using tools from analytic number theory and Thermodynamic Formalism, namely the Perron's formula and a Dolgopyat-type estimate on the spectrum of transfer operators.
Consider a general circle packing $\mathcal{P}$ in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ invariant under a Kleinian group $Γ$. When $Γ$ is convex-cocompact or its critical exponent is greater than 1, we obtain an effective equidistribution for small circles in $\mathcal{P}$ intersecting any bounded connected regular set in $\mathbb{C}$; this provides an effective version of an earlier work of Oh-Shah. In view of the recent result of McMullen-Mohammadi-Oh, our effective circle counting theorem applies to the circles contained in the limit set of a convex-cocompact but non-cocompact Kleinian group whos…
Let G be a semisimple group over rational numbers and H is a subgroup over rational numbers. Given a representation of G and an integral vector x whose stabilizer is equal to H. In this paper we investigate the asymptotic of integral points on Gx with bounded height. We find its asymptotic up to an implicit constant when H is large in G but we allow the presence of intermediate subgroups. This is achieved by a novel combination of two equidistribution results in two different settings: one is that of Eskin, Mozes and Shah on a Lie group modulo a lattice and the other one is a result of Chamber…
In this note, we consider the orbits $\{pu(n^{1+γ})|n\in\mathbb N\}$ in $Γ\backslash\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$, where $Γ$ is a non-uniform lattice in $\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$ and $u(t)$ is the standard unipotent group in $\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$. Under a Diophantine condition on the intial point $p$, we can prove that $\{pu(n^{1+γ})|n\in\mathbb N\}$ is equidistributed in $Γ\backslash\text{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$ for small $γ>0$, which generalizes a result of Venkatesh (Ann.of Math. 2010). We will compute Hausdorff dimensions of subsets of non-Diophantine points in Appendix A, using results of latti…
Given a discrete group $Γ$ of isometries of a negatively curved manifold $\widetilde M$, a nontrivial conjugacy class $\mathfrak K$ in $Γ$ and $x_0\in\widetilde M$, we give asymptotic counting results, as $t\to +\infty$, on the number of orbit points $γx_0$ at distance at most $t$ from $x_0$, when $γ$ is restricted to be in $\mathfrak K$, as well as related equidistribution results. These results generalise and extend work of Huber on cocompact hyperbolic lattices in dimension $2$. We also study the growth of given conjugacy classes in finitely generated groups endowed with a word metric.
For a locally compact second countable group G and a lattice subgroup Gamma, we give an explicit quantitative solution of the lattice point counting problem in general domains in G, provided that i) G has finite upper local dimension, and the domains satisfy a basic regularity condition, ii) the mean ergodic theorem for the action of G on G/Gamma holds, with a rate of convergence. The error term we establish matches the best current result for balls in symmetric spaces of simple higher-rank Lie groups, but holds in much greater generality. In addition, it holds uniformly over families of latti…
Abelian covers of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are ubiquitous. We prove the local mixing theorem of the frame flow for abelian covers of closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. We obtain a classification theorem for measures invariant under the horospherical subgroup. We also describe applications to the prime geodesic theorem as well as to other counting and equidistribution problems. Our results are proved for any abelian cover of a homogeneous space $Γ_0\backslash G$ where $G$ is a rank one simple Lie group and $Γ_0<G$ is a convex cocompact Zariski dense subgroup.
The number of closed billiard trajectories in a rational-angled polygon grows quadratically in the length. This paper gives an analogue on K3 surfaces, by considering special Lagrangian tori. The analogue of the angle of a billiard trajectory is a point on a twistor sphere, and the number of directions admitting a special Lagrangian torus fibration with volume bounded by $ V $ grows like $ V^{20} $ with a power-saving term. Bergeron--Matheus have explicitly estimated the exponent of the error term as $ {20-\frac{4}{697633} }$. The counting result on K3 surfaces is deduced from a count of primi…
Let $D^-$ and $D^+$ be properly immersed closed locally convex subsets of a Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature. Using mixing properties of the geodesic flow, we give an asymptotic formula as $t\to+\infty$ for the number of common perpendiculars of length at most $t$ from $D^-$ to $D^+$, counted with multiplicities, and we prove the equidistribution in the outer and inner unit normal bundles of $D^-$ and $D^+$ of the tangent vectors at the endpoints of the common perpendiculars. When the manifold is compact with exponential decay of correlations or arithmetic with fin…

We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for general families of averages on a semisimple algebraic (or S-algebraic) group G, together with an explicit rate of convergence when the action has a spectral gap. Given any lattice in G, we use the ergodic theorems for G to solve the lattice point counting problem for general domains in G, and prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for arbitrary measure-preserving actions of the lattice, together with explicit rates of convergence when a spectral gap is present. We also prove an equidistribution theorem in arbitrary isometric actions of the l…
