We use a dictionary between lattice point counting inside dilated d-dimensional ellipsoids (Euclidean counting) and counting of lifts of a closed horosphere that intersect a ball of increasing radius, to obtain two types of results. Firstly, via an $L^2$-integral error estimate for Euclidean counting, we prove effective equidistribution results for a family of expanding horospheres in the locally symmetric space SO(d) \ SL(d,R) / SL(d,Z). Secondly, we derive from uniform error estimates in Euclidean counting, error terms for counting SL(d,Z)-orbit points in a certain increasing family of subsets in SO(d) \ SL(d,R) (which we call truncated chimneys), and for counting the number of lifts of a closed horosphere that intersect a ball with large radius.
Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira [Compos. Math. 152 (2016), 667-692] prove an equidistribution theorem for rational points on expanding horospheres in the space of d-dimensional Euclidean lattices, with d>2. Their proof exploits measure classification results, but provides no insight into the rate of convergence. We pursue here an alternative approach, based on harmonic analysis and Weil's bound for Kloosterman sums, which in dimension d=3 yields an effective estimate on the rate of convergence.
We prove an effective version of a result due to Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira who established the equidistribution of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres in the space of unimodular lattices in at least $3$ dimensions. Their proof uses techniques from homogeneous dynamics and relies in particular on measure-classification theorems -- an approach which does not lend itself to effective bounds. We implement a strategy based on spectral theory, Fourier analysis and Weil's bound for Kloosterman sums in order to quantify the rate of equidistribution for a specific horospherical…
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group and $Γ$ a lattice in $G$. We generalize a method of Burger to prove precise effective equidistribution results for translates of pieces of horospheres in the homogeneous space $Γ\backslash G$.
In this paper we study the equidistribution of expanding horospheres in infinite volume geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds and apply it to the orbital counting problem in apollonian sphere packing.
Let $Γ$ be a lattice in $G=\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. We give an effective equidistribution result with precise error terms for expanding translates of pieces of horospherical orbits in $Γ\backslash G$. Our method of proof relies on the theory of unitary representations.
We prove asymptotic equidistribution results for pieces of large closed horospheres in cofinite hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary dimension. This extends earlier results by Hejhal and Strömbergsson in dimension 2. Our proofs use spectral methods, and lead to precise estimates on the rate of convergence to equidistribution.
We establish the limiting distribution of certain subsets of Farey sequences, i.e., sequences of primitive rational points, on expanding horospheres in covers $Δ\backslash\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$ of $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$, where $Δ$ is a finite index subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})$. These subsets can be obtained by projecting to the hyperplane $\{(x_1,\ldots,x_{n+1})\in\mathbb{R}^{n+1}:x_{n+1}=1\}$ sets of the form $\mathbf{A}=\bigcup_{j=1}^J\boldsymbol{a}_jΔ$, where for all $j$, $\boldsymbol{a}_j$ is a primitive lattice point in $\math…
We study the ergodic properties of horospheres on rank 1 manifolds with non-positive curvature. We prove that the horospheres are equidistributed under the action of the geodesic flow towards the Bowen-Margulis measure, on a large class of manifolds. In the case of surfaces, we define a parametrization of the horocyclic flow on the set of horocycles containing a rank 1 vector that is recurrent under the action of the geodesic flow. We prove that the horocyclic flow in restriction to this set is uniquely ergodic. The results are valid for large classes of manifolds, including the compact ones.
In recent work by Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira the limiting distributions of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres was examined in arbitrary dimension, and a suspended version of this result was announced. Motivated by this, we prove an analog to the announcement for primitive rational points in Hilbert modular surfaces via effective mixing.
Given a simple closed curve $γ$ on a connected, oriented, closed surface $S$ of negative Euler characteristic, Mirzakhani showed that the set of points in the moduli space of hyperbolic structures on $S$ having a simple closed geodesic of length $L$ of the same topological type as $γ$ equidistributes with respect to a natural probability measure as $L \to \infty$. We prove several generalizations of Mirzakhani's result and discuss some of the technical aspects ommited in her original work. The dynamics of the earthquake flow play a fundamental role in the arguments in this paper.
The main result of this paper is an effective count for Apollonian circle packings that are either bounded or contain two parallel lines. We obtain this by proving an effective equidistribution of closed horospheres in the unit tangent bundle of a geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifold of infinite volume, whose fundamental group has critical exponent bigger than 1. We also discuss applications to Affine sieves. Analogous results for surfaces are treated as well.
In this paper we study spherical equidistribution on the space of (translates of) adelic lattices, which we apply to understand the fine-scale statistics of the directions in the set of shifted primitive lattice points. We also apply our results to the distribution of the free path lengths in the Boltzmann--Grad limit for point sets such as (possibly non-rational) translates of the lattice points all of whose coordinates are squarefree. Besides the equidistribution results for translates of expanding horospheres, a key ingredient is a probabilistic argument which allows us to tackle the techni…
We establish effective counting and equidistribution results for lattice points in families of domains in hyperbolic spaces, of any dimension and over any field. The domains we focus on are defined as product sets with respect to the Iwasawa decomposition. Several classical Diophantine problems can be reduced to counting lattice points in such domains, including distribution of shortest solution to the gcd equation, and angular distribution of primitive vectors in the plane. We give an explicit and effective solution to these problems, and extend them to imaginary quadratic number fields. Furt…
This paper introduces an abstract spectral approach to prove effective equidistribution of expanding horospheres in hyperbolic manifolds. The method, which is motivated by the approach to counting developed by (Lax-Phillips 1982), produces highly effective, explicit error terms. To exhibit the flexibility of this method we prove effective horospherical equidistribution theorems in $T^1(\mathbb{H}^{n+1})$ and in the higher rank setting, $\operatorname{SL}_n(\mathbb{R})/\operatorname{SO}_n(\mathbb{R})$.
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of circles of curvature at most T in any given bounded Apollonian circle packing. For an integral packing, we obtain the upper bounds for the number of circles with prime curvature as well as of pairs of circles with prime curvatures, which are sharp up constant multiples. The main ingredient of our proof is the effective equidistribution of expanding horospheres on geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds under the assumption that the critical exponent of its fundamental group exceeds one.
We generalize classical results on the gap distribution (and other fine-scale statistics) for the one-dimensional Farey sequence to arbitrary dimension. This is achieved by exploiting the equidistribution of horospheres in the space of lattices, and the equidistribution of Farey points in a certain subspace of the space of lattices. The argument follows closely the general approach developed by A. Strömbergsson and the author [Annals of Math. 172 (2010) 1949--2033].
We consider improvements of Dirichlet's Theorem on space of matrices $M_{m,n}(R)$. It is shown that for a certain class of fractals $K\subset [0,1]^{mn}\subset M_{m,n}(R)$ of local maximal dimension Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be improved almost everywhere. This is shown using entropy and dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups.
We study the general problem of equidistribution of expanding translates of an analytic curve by an algebraic diagonal flow on the homogeneous space $G/Γ$ of a semisimple algebraic group $G$. We define two families of algebraic subvarieties of the associated partial flag variety $G/P$, which give the obstructions to non-divergence and equidistribution. We apply this to prove that for Lebesgue almost every point on an analytic curve in the space of $m\times n$ real matrices whose image is not contained in any subvariety coming from these two families, the Dirichlet's theorem on simultaneous Dio…
Recently Mohammadi and Salehi-Golsefidy gave necessary and sufficient conditions under which certain translates of homogeneous measures converge, and they determined the limiting measures in the cases of convergence. The class of measures they considered includes the maximal horospherical measures. In this paper we prove the corresponding effective equidistribution results in the space of unimodular lattices. We also prove the corresponding results for probability measures with absolutely continuous densities in rank two and three. Then we address the problem of determining the error terms in …
Let $X=\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})/\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$, and $g_t=\text{diag}(e^{2t}, e^{-t}, e^{-t})$. Let $ν$ denote the push-forward of the normalized Lebesgue measure on a segment of a straight line in the expanding horosphere of $\{g_t\}_{t>0}$, under the map $h\mapsto h\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ from $\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ to $X$. We give explicit necessary and sufficient Diophantine conditions on the line for equidistribution of each of the following families of measures on $X$: (1) $g_t$-translates of $ν$ as $t\to\infty$. (2) averages of $g_t$-translates of $ν$ over $t\in[0,T]$ as $T\…

In this article, we study an analytic curve $φ: I=[a,b]\rightarrow \mathrm{M}(n\times n, \mathbb{R})$ in the space of $n$ by $n$ real matrices, and show that if $φ$ satisfies certain geometric conditions, then for almost every point on the curve, the Diophantine approximation given by Dirichlet's Theorem is not improvable. To do this, we embed the curve into some homogeneous space $G/Γ$, and prove that under the action of some expanding diagonal flow $A= \{a(t): t \in \mathbb{R}\}$, the expanding curves tend to be equidistributed in $G/Γ$, as $t \rightarrow +\infty$. This solves a special case…
We prove an effective version of a result obtained recently by Kleinbock and Weiss on equidistribution of expanding translates of orbits of horospherical subgroups in the space of lattices.
We prove effective equidistribution of primitive rational points and of primitive rational points defined by monomials along long horocycle orbits in products of the torus and the modular surface. This answers a question posed in joint work by the first and the last named author with Shahar Mozes and Uri Shapira. Under certain congruence conditions we prove the joint equidistribution of conjugate rational points in the two-torus and the modular surface.
We use spectral method to prove a joint equidistribution of primitive rational points and the same along expanding horocycle orbits in the products of the circle and the unit cotangent bundle of the modular surface. This result explicates the error bound in a recent work of Einsiedler, Luethi, and Shah \cite[Theorem $1.1$]{ELS}. The error is sharp upon the best known progress towards the Ramanujan conjecture at the finite places for the modular surface.
Given a homogeneous space $X = G/Γ$ with $G$ containing the group $H = (\mathrm{SO}(n,1))^k$. Let $x\in X$ such that $Hx$ is dense in $X$. Given an analytic curve $ϕ: I=[a,b] \rightarrow H$, we will show that if $ϕ$ satisfies certain geometric condition, then for a typical diagonal subgroup $A =\{a(t): t \in \mathbb{R}\} \subset H$ the translates $\{a(t)ϕ(I)x: t >0\}$ of the curve $ϕ(I)x$ will tend to be equidistributed in $X$ as $t \rightarrow +\infty$. The proof is based on the study of linear representations of $\mathrm{SO}(n,1)$ and $H$.
Let $H = \mathrm{SO}(n,1)$ and $A =\{a(t) : t \in \mathbb{R}\}$ be a maximal $\mathbb{R}$-split Cartan subgroup of $H$. Let $G$ be a Lie group containing $H$ and $Γ$ be a lattice of $G$. Let $x = gΓ\in G/Γ$ be a point of $G/Γ$ such that its $H$-orbit $Hx$ is dense in $G/Γ$. Let $ϕ: I= [a,b] \rightarrow H$ be an analytic curve, then $ϕ(I)x$ gives an analytic curve in $G/Γ$. In this article, we will prove the following result: if $ϕ(I)$ satisfies some explicit geometric condition, then $a(t)ϕ(I)x$ tends to be equidistributed in $G/Γ$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$. It answers the first question asked…

Let $U$ be a horospherical subgroup of a noncompact simple Lie group $H$ and let $A$ be a maximal split torus in the normalizer of $U$. We define the expanding cone $A_U^+$ in $A$ with respect to $U$ and show that it can be explicitly calculated. We prove several dynamical results for translations of $U$-slices by elements of $A_U^+$ on finite volume homogeneous space $G/Γ$ where $G$ is a Lie group containing $H$. More precisely, we prove quantitative nonescape of mass and equidistribution of a $U$-slice. If $H$ is a normal subgroup of $G$ and the $H$ action on $G/Γ$ has a spectral gap, we pro…
Let $T \colon M \to M$ be a nonuniformly expanding dynamical system, such as logistic or intermittent map. Let $v \colon M \to \mathbb{R}^d$ be an observable and $v_n = \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} v \circ T^k$ denote the Birkhoff sums. Given a probability measure $μ$ on $M$, we consider $v_n$ as a discrete time random process on the probability space $(M, μ)$. In smooth ergodic theory there are various natural choices of $μ$, such as the Lebesgue measure, or the absolutely continuous $T$-invariant measure. They give rise to different random processes. We investigate relation between such processes. We sh…
In this paper we prove an effective equidistribution result for both primitive and non-primitive points on certain expanding horocycle sections in ASL$(2,\mathbb{Z}) \backslash $ASL$(2,\mathbb{R})$. This provides an effective version of a result recently proven by the author and generalises recent work by Einsiedler, Luethi and Shah who prove similar results in the context of the unit tangent bundle of the modular surface.
In this paper, we use the thermodynamical formalism to show that there exists a unique equilibrium state $μ_ϕ$ for each expanding Thurston map $f: S^2\rightarrow S^2$ together with a real-valued Hölder continuous potential $ϕ$. Here the sphere $S^2$ is equipped with a natural metric induced by $f$, called a visual metric. We also prove that identical equilibrium states correspond to potentials which are co-homologous upto a constant, and that the measure-preserving transformation $f$ of the probability space $(S^2,μ_ϕ)$ is exact, and in particular, mixing and ergodic. Moreover, we establish ve…
In this paper, we show that each expanding Thurston map $f : S^2\rightarrow S^2$ has $1+ deg f$ fixed points, counted with appropriate weight, where $ deg f$ denotes the topological degree of the map $f$. We then prove the equidistribution of preimages and of (pre)periodic points with respect to the unique measure of maximal entropy $μ_f$ for $f$. We also show that $(S^2,f,μ_f)$ is a factor of the left shift on the set of one-sided infinite sequences with its measure of maximal entropy, in the category of measure-preserving dynamical systems. Finally, we prove that $μ_f$ is almost surely the w…
