We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for general families of averages on a semisimple algebraic (or S-algebraic) group G, together with an explicit rate of convergence when the action has a spectral gap. Given any lattice in G, we use the ergodic theorems for G to solve the lattice point counting problem for general domains in G, and prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for arbitrary measure-preserving actions of the lattice, together with explicit rates of convergence when a spectral gap is present.
We also prove an equidistribution theorem in arbitrary isometric actions of the lattice.
For the proof we develop a general method to derive ergodic theorems for actions of a locally compact group G, and of a lattice subgroup Gamma, provided certain natural spectral, geometric and regularity conditions are satisfied by the group G, the lattice Gamma, and the domains where the averages are supported. In particular, we establish the general principle that under these conditions a quantitative mean ergodic theorem for a family of averages gives rise to a quantitative solution of the lattice point counting problem in their supports.
We demonstrate the new explicit error terms that we obtain by a variety of examples.
We show that the first Johnson subgroup of the mapping class group of a surface S of genus greater than one acts ergodically on the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of S in SU_2. Our proof relies on a local description of the latter space around the trivial representation and on the Taylor expansion of trace functions.
A measure preserving action of a countably infinite group Γis called totally ergodic if every infinite subgroup of Γacts ergodically. For example, all mixing and mildly mixing actions are totally ergodic. This note shows that if an action of Γis totally ergodic then there exists a finite normal subgroup N of Γsuch that the stabilizer of almost every point is equal to N. Surprisingly the proof relies on the group theoretic fact (proved by Hall and Kulatilaka as well as by Kargapolov) that every infinite locally finite group contains an infinite abelian subgroup, of which all known proofs rely o…
An \textit{algebraic} action of a discrete group $Γ$ is a homomorphism from $Γ$ to the group of continuous automorphisms of a compact abelian group $X$. By duality, such an action of $Γ$ is determined by a module $M=\widehat{X}$ over the integer group ring $\mathbb{Z}Γ$ of $Γ$. The simplest examples of such modules are of the form $M=\mathbb{Z}Γ/\mathbb{Z}Γf$ with $f\in \mathbb{Z}Γ$; the corresponding algebraic action is the \textit{principal algebraic $Γ$-action} $α_f$ defined by $f$. In this note we prove the following extensions of results by Hayes \cite{Hayes} on ergodicity of principal al…
We investigate invariant random subgroups in groups acting on rooted trees. Let $\mathrm{Alt}_f(T)$ be the group of finitary even automorphisms of the $d$-ary rooted tree $T$. We prove that a nontrivial ergodic IRS of $\mathrm{Alt}_f(T)$ that acts without fixed points on the boundary of $T$ contains a level stabilizer, in particular it is the random conjugate of a finite index subgroup. Applying the technique to branch groups we prove that an ergodic IRS in a finitary regular branch group contains the derived subgroup of a generalized rigid level stabilizer. We also prove that every weakly bra…
We classify the ergodic invariant random subgroups of block-diagonal limits of symmetric groups in the cases when the groups are simple and the associated dimension groups have finite dimensional state spaces. These block-diagonal limits arise as the transformation groups (full groups) of Bratteli diagrams that preserve the cofinality of infinite paths in the diagram. Given a simple full group $G$ admitting only a finite number of ergodic measures on the path-space $X$ of the associated Bratteli digram, we prove that every non-Dirac ergodic invariant random subgroup of $G$ arises as the stabil…
This survey is focused on the results related to topologies on the groups of transformations in ergodic theory, Borel, and Cantor dynamics. Various topological properties (density, connectedness, genericity) of these groups and their subsets (subgroups) are studied.
Let A be a locally compact group topologically generated by d elements and let k>d. Consider the action, by pre-composition, of Aut(F_k) on the set of marked, k-generated, dense subgroups D_{k,A} := {h:F_k --> A | h(F_k) is dense in A}. We prove the ergodicity of this action for two families of simple, totally disconnected locally compact groups. (i) A = PSL(2,K) where K is a non-Archimedean local field (of characteristic not equal to 2), (ii) A = Aut^{0}(T) - the group of orientation preserving automorphisms of a (q+1)-regular tree, for q > 1. In contrast, a recent result of Minsky's shows th…
We prove that every ergodic amenable action of an algebraic group over a local field of characteristic zero is induced from an ergodic action of an amenable subgroup.
We show that if $G$ is a non-elementary word hyperbolic group, mapping class group of a hyperbolic surface or the outer automorphism group of a nonabelian free group then $G$ has $2^{\aleph_0}$ many continuous ergodic invariant random subgroups. If $G$ is a nonabelian free group then $G$ has $2^{\aleph_0}$ many continuous $G$-ergodic characteristic random subgroups. We also provide a complete classification of characteristic random subgroups of free abelian groups of countably infinite rank and elementary $p$-groups of countably infinite rank.
We define the notion of uniformly recurrent subgroup, URS in short, which is a topological analog of the notion of invariant random subgroup (IRS), introduced in a work of M. Abert, Y. Glasner and B. Virag. Our main results are as follows. (i) It was shown by B. Weiss that for an arbitrary countable infinite group G, any free ergodic probability measure preserving G-system admits a minimal model. In contrast we show here, using URS's, that for the lamplighter group there is an ergodic measure preserving action which does not admit a minimal model. (ii) For an arbitrary countable group G, every…
We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for the action of a discrete lattice subgroup in a connected algebraic Lie group, on infinite volume homogeneous algebraic varieties. Under suitable necessary conditions, our results are quantitative, namely we establish rates of convergence in the mean and pointwise ergodic theorems, which can be estimated explicitly. Our results give a precise and in most cases optimal quantitative form to the duality principle governing dynamics on homogeneous spaces. We illustrate their scope in a variety of equidistribution problems.
We study the basic ergodic properties (ergodicity and conservativity) of the action of an arbitrary subgroup $H$ of a free group $F$ on the boundary $\partial F$ with respect to the uniform measure. Our approach is geometrical and combinatorial, and it is based on choosing a system of Nielsen--Schreier generators in $H$ associated with a geodesic spanning tree in the Schreier graph $X=H\backslash F$. We give several (mod 0) equivalent descriptions of the Hopf decomposition of the boundary into the conservative and the dissipative parts. Further we relate conservativity and dissipativity of the…
In the present paper we prove weighted ergodic theorems and multiparameter weighted ergodic theorems for positive contractions acting on $L_p(\hat{\nabla},\hatμ)$. Our main tool is the use of methods of measurable bundles of Banach-Kantorovich lattices.
In the present paper we prove Besocovich weighted ergodic theorem for positive contractions acting on Orlich-Kantorovich space. Our main tool is the use of methods of measurable bundles of Banach-Kantorovich lattices.
We show that weak containment of free ergodic measure-preserving actions of $\mathbf{F}_\infty$ is not equivalent to weak containment of the corresponding Koopman representations. This result is based on the construction of an invariant random subgroup of $\mathbf{F}_\infty$ which is supported on the maximal actions.
Let $X$ be a proper geodesic Gromov hyperbolic metric space and let $G$ be a cocompact group of isometries of $X$ admitting a uniform lattice. Let $d$ be the Hausdorff dimension of the Gromov boundary $\partial X$. We define the critical exponent $δ(μ)$ of any discrete invariant random subgroup $μ$ of the locally compact group $G$ and show that $δ(μ) > \frac{d}{2}$ in general and that $δ(μ) = d$ if $μ$ is of divergence type. Whenever $G$ is a rank-one simple Lie group with Kazhdan's property $(T)$ it follows that an ergodic invariant random subgroup of divergence type is a lattice. One of our …
Let $Γ$ be a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group $G$. For a maximal horospherical subgroup $N$ of $G$, we show that the space of all non-trivial $NM$-invariant ergodic and $A$-quasi-invariant Radon measures on $Γ\backslash G$, up to proportionality, is homeomorphic to ${\mathbb R}^{\text{rank}\,G-1}$, where $A$ is a maximal real split torus and $M$ is a maximal compact subgroup which normalizes $N$. One of the main ingredients is to establish the $NM$-ergodicity of all Burger-Roblin measures.
We show that effective $2\ell$-multiple correlations imply quantitative $\ell$-multiple pointwise ergodic theorems. The result has a wide class of applications which include subgroup actions on homogeneous spaces, ergodic nilmanifold automorphisms, subshifts of finite type and Young towers.
We prove that any ergodic measure-preserving action of an irreducible lattice in a semisimple group, with finite center and each simple factor having rank at least two, either has finite orbits or has finite stabilizers. The same dichotomy holds for many commensurators of such lattices. The above are derived from more general results on groups with the Howe-Moore property and property $(T)$. We prove similar results for commensurators in such groups and for irreducible lattices (and commensurators) in products of at least two such groups, at least one of which is totally disconnected.
We prove that all invariant random subgroups of the lamplighter group $L$ are co-sofic. It follows that $L$ is permutation stable, providing an example of an infinitely presented such a group. Our proof applies more generally to all permutational wreath products of finitely generated abelian groups. We rely on the pointwise ergodic theorem for amenable groups.
We prove that a discrete subgroup generated by two lattices in opposite minimal horospherical subgroups of $SL(3,\mathbb{C})$ is arithmetic and thus by a Borel and Harish-Chandra also a lattice. We follow the method and ideas used by Oh in \cite{Ref13}. There, Oh proves the same result for lattices in minimal horospherical subgroups of $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$. The method consists of studying the orbits of the generating lattices in the horospherical subgroups under the conjugation action of the commutator of the corresponding Levi subgroup in order to obtain a rational structure for $SL(3,\mathbb{C…
We investigate analogues of some of the classical results in homogeneous dynamics in non-linear setting. Let $G$ be a closed subgroup of the group of automorphisms of a biregular tree and $Γ<G$ a discrete subgroup. For a large class of groups $G$ we give a classification of probability measures on $G/Γ$ invariant under horospherical subgroups. When $Γ$ is a cocompact lattice, we prove unique ergodicity of the horospherical action. We prove Hedlund's theorem for geometrically finite quotients. Finally, we study equidistribution of large compact orbits.
We construct examples of ergodic vertical flows in periodic configurations of Eaton lenses of fixed radius. We achieve this by studying a family of infinite translation surfaces that are $\mathbb{Z}^2$-covers of slit tori. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of lattices for which the vertical flow is ergodic is bigger than 3/2. Moreover, the lattices are explicitly constructed.
Recently, the dynamical and spectral properties of square-free integers, visible lattice points and various generalisations have received increased attention. One reason is the connection of one-dimensional examples such as $\mathscr B$-free numbers with Sarnak's conjecture on the `randomness' of the Möbius function, another the explicit computability of correlation functions as well as eigenfunctions for these systems together with intrinsic ergodicity properties. Here, we summarise some of the results, with focus on spectral and dynamical aspects, and expand a little on the implications for …
We study in this paper the validity of the mean ergodic theorem along \emph{left} Følner sequences in a countable amenable group $G$. Although the \emph{weak} ergodic theorem always holds along \emph{any} left Følner sequence in $G$, we provide examples where the \emph{mean} ergodic theorem fails in quite dramatic ways. On the other hand, if $G$ does not admit any ICC quotients, e.g. if $G$ is virtually nilpotent, then we prove that the mean ergodic theorem does indeed hold along \emph{any} left Følner sequence. In the case when a unitary representation of a countable amenable group is induced…
We study the Furstenberg-entropy realization problem for stationary actions. It is shown that for finitely supported probability measures on free groups, any a-priori possible entropy value can be realized as the entropy of an ergodic stationary action. This generalizes results of Bowen. The stationary actions we construct arise via invariant random subgroups (IRSs), based on ideas of Bowen and Kaimanovich. We provide a general framework for constructing a continuum of ergodic IRSs for a discrete group under some algebraic conditions, which gives a continuum of entropy values. Our tools apply …
We prove that any ergodic nonatomic probability-preserving action of an irreducible lattice in a semisimple group, at least one factor being connected and higher-rank, is essentially free. This generalizes the result of Stuck and Zimmer that the same statement holds when the ambient group is a semisimple real Lie group and every simple factor is higher-rank. We also prove a generalization of a result of Bader and Shalom by showing that any probability-preserving action of a product of simple groups, at least one with property (T), which is ergodic for each simple subgroup is either essentially…
Let G=PSL(2, F) where F= R or C, and consider the space Z=(Γ_1 x Γ_2)\ (G x G) where Γ_1<G is a co-compact lattice and Γ_2<G is a finitely generated discrete Zariski dense subgroup. The work of Benoist-Quint gives a classification of all ergodic invariant Radon measures on Z for the diagonal G-action. In this paper, for a horospherical subgroup N of G, we classify all ergodic, conservative, invariant Radon measures on Z for the diagonal N-action, under the additional assumption that Γ_2 is geometrically finite.
We formulate and prove a quantum Shannon-McMillan theorem. The theorem demonstrates the significance of the von Neumann entropy for translation invariant ergodic quantum spin systems on n-dimensional lattices: the entropy gives the logarithm of the essential number of eigenvectors of the system on large boxes. The one-dimensional case covers quantum information sources and is basic for coding theorems.
Suppose $L$ is a semisimple Levi subgroup of a connected Lie group~$G$, $X$ is a Borel $G$-space with finite invariant measure, and $α\colon X \times G \to \GL_n(\real)$ is a Borel cocycle. Assume $L$ has finite center, and that the real rank of every simple factor of~$L$ is at least two. We show that if $L$ is ergodic on~$X$, and the restriction of~$α$ to~$X \times L$ is cohomologous to a homomorphism (modulo a compact group), then, after passing to a finite cover of~$X$, the cocycle $α$ itself is cohomologous to a homomorphism (modulo a compact group).
Let Γbe a lattice in G=SL(n,R) and X=G/S a homogeneous space of G, where S is a closed subgroup of G which contains a real algebraic subgroup H such that G/H is compact. We establish uniform distribution of orbits of Γin X analogous to the classical equidistribution on torus. To obtain this result, we first prove an ergodic theorem along balls in the connected component of Borel subgroup of G.
Equationally compact subgroups of countable groups were introduced by Banaschewski. For all known cases the orbit closure of such a subgroup is a countable subset in the space of subgroups and has finite Cantor-Bendixson rank. We show that there exists a finitely generated group $Γ$ such that for any countable ordinal $α$ we have an equationally compact subgroup $H\subset Γ$ for which the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the orbit closure of $H$ equals to $α+2$. Then we give an explicite construction of continuum many equationally compact subgroups of $Γ$ such that the associated ergodic Bernoulli shi…
We prove a von Neumann type ergodic theorem for averages of unitary operators arising from the Furstenberg-Poisson boundary representation (the quasi-regular representation) of any lattice in a non-compact connected semisimple Lie group with finite center.
We derive results on the distribution of directions of saddle connections on translation surfaces using only the Birkhoff ergodic theorem applied to the geodesic flow on the moduli space of translation surfaces. Our techniques, together with an approximation argument, also give an alternative proof of a weak version of a classical theorem in multi-dimensional Diophantine approximation due to W. Schmidt \cite{SchmidtMetrical, SchmidtMetrical2}. The approximation argument allows us to deduce the Birkhoff genericity of almost all lattices in a certain submanifold of the space of unimodular lattic…
We classify measures on a homogeneous space which are invariant under a certain solvable subgroup and ergodic under its unipotent radical. Our treatment is independent of characteristic. As a result we get the first measure classification for the action of semisimple subgroups without any characteristic restriction.
In this paper, we show that every measure-preserving ergodic equivalence relation of cost less than m comes from a "rich" faithful invariant random subgroup of the free group on m generators, strengthening a result of Bowen which had been obtained by a Baire category argument. Our proof is completely explicit: we use our previous construction of topological generators for full groups and observe that these generators induce a totally non free action. We then twist this construction so that the action is moreover amenable onto almost every orbit and highly faithful.
Suppose that a group $G$ acts non-elementarily on a hyperbolic space $S$ and does not fix any point of $\partial S$. A subgroup $H\le G$ is said to be geometrically dense in $G$ if the limit sets of $H$ and $G$ coincide and $H$ does not fix any point of $\partial S$. We prove that every invariant random subgroup of $G$ is either geometrically dense or contained in the elliptic radical (i.e., the maximal normal elliptic subgroup of $G$). In particular, every ergodic measure preserving action of an acylindrically hyperbolic group on a Borel probability space $(X,μ)$ either has finite stabilizers…
Let $N$ be a connected and simply connected nilpotent Lie group, $Λ$ a lattice in $N$, and $X=N/Λ$ the corresponding nilmanifold. Let $Aff(X)$ be the group of affine transformations of $X$. We characterize the countable subgroups $H$ of $Aff(X)$ for which the action of $H$ on $X$ has a spectral gap, that is, such that the associated unitary representation $U$ of $H$ on the space of functions from $L^2(X)$ with zero mean does not weakly contain the trivial representation. Denote by $T$ the maximal torus factor associated to $X$. We show that the action of $H$ on $X$ has a spectral gap if and on…
Let $Γ$ be a lattice of a semisimple Lie group $L$. Suppose that one parameter Ad-diagonalizable subgroup $\{g_t\}$ of $L$ acts ergodically on $L/Γ$ with respect to the probability Haar measure $μ$. For certain proper subgroup $U$ of the unstable horospherical subgroup of $\{g_t\}$ we show that given $x\in L/Γ$ for almost every $u\in U$ the trajectory $\{g_tux: 0\le t\le T\}$ is uniformly distributed with respect to $μ$ as $T\to \infty$.
We show the existence of a limiting distribution $\cD_\cC$ of the adequately normalized discrepancy function of a random translation on a torus relative to a strictly convex set $\cC$. Using a correspondence between the small divisors in the Fourier series of the discrepancy function and lattices with short vectors, and mixing of diagonal flows on the space of lattices, we identify $\cD_\cC$ with the distribution of the level sets of a function defined on the product of the space of lattices with an infinite dimensional torus. We apply our results to counting lattice points in slanted cylinder…
We give a formula relating the topological rank of the full group of an aperiodic pmp equivalence relation to the cost of its ergodic components. Furthermore, we obtain examples of full groups having a dense free subgroup whose rank is equal to the topological rank of the full group, using a Baire category argument. We then study the automatic continuity property for full groups of aperiodic equivalence relations, and find a connected metric for which they have the automatic continuity property. This allows us to give an algebraic characterization of aperiodicity for pmp equivalence relations,…
