We compute the exact value of the essential norm of a generalized Hilbert matrix operator acting on weighted Bergman spaces $A^p_v$ and weighted Banach spaces $H^\infty_v$ of analytic functions, where $v$ is a general radial weight. In particular, we obtain the exact value of the essential norm of the classical Hilbert matrix operator on standard weighted Bergman spaces $A^p_α$ for $p>2+α, \, α\ge 0,$ and on Korenblum spaces $H^\infty_α$ for $0 < α< 1.$ We also cover the Hardy space $H^p, \, 1 < p < \infty,$ case. In the weighted Bergman space case, the essential norm of the Hilbert matrix is equal to the conjectured value of its operator norm and similarly in the Hardy space case the essential norm and the operator norm coincide. We also compute the exact value of the norm of the Hilbert matrix on $H^\infty_{w_α}$ with weights $w_α(z)=(1-|z|)^α$ for all $0 < α< 1$. Also in this case, the values of the norm and essential norm coincide.
We investigate the behavior of a generalized Hilbert space model of a function in the Schur class of the bidisk at singular boundary points that satisfy a growth condition. We examine the relationship between the boundary behavior of Schur functions and the geometry of corresponding generalized Hilbert space models. We describe a geometric condition on an associated operator that classifies the behavior of the directional derivative of the underlying Schur function at a carapoint.
We introduce a family of discrete analytic functions, called expandable discrete analytic functions, which includes discrete analytic polynomials, and define two products in this family. The first one is defined in a way similar to the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya product of hyperholomorphic functions, and allows us to define rational discrete analytic functions. To define the second product we need a new space of entire functions which is contractively included in the Fock space. We study in this space some counterparts of Schur analysis.
In this article, the open problem of finding the exact value of the norm of the Hilbert matrix operator on weighted Bergman spaces $A^p_α$ is adressed. The norm was conjectured to be $\fracπ{\sin \frac{(2+α)π}{p}}$ by Karapetrović. We obtain a complete solution to the conjecture for $α\ge 0$ and $2+α+\sqrt{α^2+\frac{7}{2}α+3} \le p < 2(2+α)$ and a partial solution for $2+2α< p < 2+α+\sqrt{α^2+\frac{7}{2}α+3}.$ Moreover, we also show that the conjecture is valid for small values of $α$ when $2+2α< p \le 3+2α.$ Finally, the case $α= 1$ is considered.
In this paper we introduce and prove some properties of $(α;β)$-normal operators according to semi-Hilbertian space structures. Furthermore we s,ate various inequalities between the A-operator norm and A-numerical radius of $(α,β)$-normal operators in semi Hilbertian spaces.
In this paper, we consider composition operators on weighted Hilbert spaces of analytic functions and observe that a formula for the essential norm, give a Hilbert-Schmidt characterization and characterize the membership in Schatten-class for these operators. Also, closed range composition operators are investigated.
It follows, from a generalised version of Paley-Wiener theorem, that the Laplace transform is an isometry between certain spaces of weighted $L^2$ functions defined on $(0, \infty)$ and (Hilbert) spaces of analytic functions on the right complex half-plane (for example Hardy, Bergman or Dirichlet spaces). We can use this fact to investigate properties of multipliers and multiplication operators on the latter type of spaces. In this paper we present a full characterisation of multipliers in terms of a generalised concept of a Carleson measure. Under certain conditions, these spaces of analytic …
Using a representation of the discrete Hilbert transform in terms of martingales arising from Doob $h$-processes, we prove that its $l^p$-norm, $1<p<\infty$, is bounded above by the $L^p$-norm of the continuous Hilbert transform. Together with the already known lower bound, this resolves the long-standing conjecture that the norms of these operators are equal.
The article is devoted to the problem of Hilbert-Schmidt type analytic extensions in Hardy spaces over the infinite-dimensional unitary matrix group endowed with an invariant probability measure. An orthogonal basis of Hilbert-Schmidt polynomials, reproducing kernels, integral formulas and boundary values are investigated.
Families of quasi-permutable normal operators in octonion Hilbert spaces are investigated. Their spectra are studied. Multiparameter semigroups of such operators are considered. A non-associative analog of Stone's theorem is proved.
In this paper, more inequalities between the operator norm and its numerical radius, for the class of normal operators, are established. Some of the obtained results are based on recent reverse results for the Schwarz inequality in Hilbert spaces due to the author.
In this paper, we focus on frames of operators or K-frames on Hilbert spaces in Parseval cases. Since equal-norm tight frames play important roles for robust data transmission, we aim to study this topics on Parseval K-frames. We will show that each finite set of equal-norms of vectors can be extended to an equal-norm K-frame. Also, we present a correspondence between Parseval K-frames and the set of all closed subspaces of a finite Hilbert space. Finally, a construction of equal-norm dual K-frames will be introduced.
Affiliated and normal operators in octonion Hilbert spaces are studied. Theorems about their properties and of related algebras are demonstrated. Spectra of unbounded normal operators are investigated.
Let T be a C_{\cdot 0}-contraction on a Hilbert space H and S be a non-trivial closed subspace of H. We prove that S is a T-invariant subspace of H if and only if there exists a Hilbert space D and a partially isometric operator Π: H^2_D(\mathbb{D}) \raro H such that ΠM_z = T Πand that S = ran Π, or equivalently, P_S = ΠΠ^*. As an application we completely classify the shift-invariant subspaces of C_{\cdot 0}-contractive and analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit disc. Our results also includes the case of weighted Bergman spaces over the unit disk.
We give a review of results on the operator-norm convergence of the Trotter product formula on Hilbert and Banach spaces, which is focused on the problem of its convergence rates. Some recent results concerning evolution semigroups are presented in details.
Utilizing the Birkhoff--James orthogonality, we present some characterizations of the norm-parallelism for elements of $\mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ defined on a finite dimensional Hilbert space, elements of a Hilbert $C^*$-module over the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators and elements of an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra. We also consider the characterization of norm parallelism problem for operators on a finite dimensional Hilbert space when the operator norm is replaced by the Schatten $p$-norm. Some applications and generalizations are discussed for certain elements of a Hilbert $C^*$-module.
We characterize the compactness of composition operators; in term of generalized Nevanlinna counting functions, on a large class of Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, which can be viewed between the Bergman and the Dirichlet spaces
The family of harmonic Hilbert spaces is a natural enlargement of those classical $L^{2}$-Sobolev space on $\R^d$ which consist of continuous functions. In the present paper we demonstrate that the use of basic results from the theory of Wiener amalgam spaces allows to establish fundamental properties of harmonic Hilbert spaces even if they are defined over an arbitrary locally compact abelian group $\G$. Even for $\G = \R^{d}$ this new approach improves previously known results. In this paper we present results on minimal norm interpolators over lattices and show that the infinite minimal nor…
Very recently, Božin and Karapetrović solved a conjecture by proving that the norm of the Hilbert matrix operator $\mathcal{H}$ on the Bergman space $A^p$ is equal to $\fracπ{\sin(\frac{2π}{p})}$ for $2 < p < 4.$ In this article we present a partly new and simplified proof of this result. Moreover, we calculate the exact value of the norm of $\mathcal{H}$ defined on the Korenblum spaces $H^\infty_α$ for $0 < α\le 2/3$ and an upper bound for the norm on the scale $2/3 < α< 1$.
An operator $T$ acting on a Hilbert space is called $(α,β)$-normal ($0\leq α\leq 1\leq β$) if \begin{equation*} α^{2}T^{\ast }T\leq TT^{\ast}\leq β^{2}T^{\ast}T. \end{equation*} In this paper we establish various inequalities between the operator norm and its numerical radius of $(α,β)$-normal operators in Hilbert spaces. For this purpose, we employ some classical inequalities for vectors in inner product spaces.
We compare the rate of decay of singular numbers of a given composition operator acting on various Hilbert spaces of analytic functions on the unit disk $\D$. We show that for the Hardy and Bergman spaces, our results are sharp. We also give lower and upper estimates of the singular numbers of the composition operator with symbol the ``cusp map'' and the lens maps, acting on weighted Dirichlet spaces.
A spectral theory of linear operators on a rigged Hilbert space is applied to Schrödinger operators with exponentially decaying potentials and dilation analytic potentials. The theory of rigged Hilbert spaces provides a unified approach to resonances (generalized eigenvalues) for both classes of potentials without using any spectral deformation techniques. Generalized eigenvalues for one dimensional Schrödinger operators (ordinary differential operators) are investigated in detail. A certain holomorphic function $\mathbb{D}(λ)$ is constructed so that $\mathbb{D}(λ) = 0$ if and only if $λ$ is a…
We consider various Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet series whose norms are given by weighted $\ell^2$ norms of the Dirichlet coefficients. We characterize the multiplier algebras for some of these spaces.
Let $X$ be a separable real Hilbert space. We show that for every Lipschitz function $f:X\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$, and for every $ε>0$, there exists a Lipschitz, real analytic function $g:X\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ such that $|f(x)-g(x)|\leq ε$ and $\textrm{Lip}(g)\leq \textrm{Lip}(f)+ε$.
We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the norm-parallelism of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space. We also give a characterization of the Birkhoff--James orthogonality for Hilbert space operators. Moreover, we discuss the connection between norm-parallelism to the identity operator and an equality condition for the Davis--Wielandt radius. Some other related results are also discussed.
We define angle $Θ_{X,Y}$ between non-zero Hilbert--Schmidt operators $X$ and $Y$ by $\cosΘ_{_{X,Y}} = \frac{{\rm Re}{\rm Tr}(Y^*X)}{{\|X\|}_{_2}{\|Y\|}_{_2}}$, and give some of its essentially properties. It is shown, among other things, that \begin{align*} \big|\cosΘ_{_{X,Y}}\big|\leq \min\left\{\sqrt{\cosΘ_{_{|X^*|,|Y^*|}}}, \sqrt{\cosΘ_{_{|X|,|Y|}}}\right\}. \end{align*} It enables us to provide alternative proof of some well-known inequalities for the Hilbert--Schmidt norm. In particular, we apply this inequality to prove Lee's conjecture [Linear Algebra Appl. 433 (2010), no.~3, 580--584]…
In this manuscript, we present several new results in finite and countable dimensional real Hilbert space phase retrieval and norm retrieval by vectors and projections. We make a detailed study of when hyperplanes do norm retrieval. Also, we show that the families of norm retrievable frames $\{f_{i}\}_{i=1}^{m}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are not dense in the family of $m\leq (2n-2)$-element sets of vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for every finite $n$ and the families of vectors which do norm retrieval in $\ell^2$ are not dense in the infinite families of vectors in $\ell^2$. We also show that if a Riesz bas…
Let $X$ be a given Banach space and let $M$, $N$ be two orthogonal $X$-valued local martingales such that $N$ is weakly differentially subordinate to $M$. The paper contains the proof of the estimate $$ \mathbb E Ψ(N_t) \leq C_{Φ,Ψ,X} \mathbb E Φ(M_t),\;\;\; t\geq 0, $$ where $Φ, Ψ:X \to \mathbb R_+$ are convex continuous functions and the least admissible constant $C_{Φ,Ψ,X}$ coincides with the $Φ,Ψ$-norm of the periodic Hilbert transform. As a corollary, it is shown that the $Φ,Ψ$-norms of the periodic Hilbert transform, the Hilbert transform on the real line, and the discrete Hilbert transf…
This paper provides an overview of interpolation of Banach and Hilbert spaces, with a focus on establishing when equivalence of norms is in fact equality of norms in the key results of the theory. (In brief, our conclusion for the Hilbert space case is that, with the right normalisations, all the key results hold with equality of norms.) In the final section we apply the Hilbert space results to the Sobolev spaces $H^s(Ω)$ and $\widetilde{H}^s(Ω)$, for $s\in \mathbb{R}$ and an open $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We exhibit examples in one and two dimensions of sets $Ω$ for which these scales of Sobo…
Let $X$ be a separable Banach space with a separating polynomial. We show that there exists $C\geq 1$ (depending only on $X$) such that for every Lipschitz function $f:X\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$, and every $ε>0$, there exists a Lipschitz, real analytic function $g:X\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ such that $|f(x)-g(x)|\leq ε$ and $\textrm{Lip}(g)\leq C\textrm{Lip}(f)$. This result is new even in the case when $X$ is a Hilbert space. Furthermore, in the Hilbertian case we also show that $C$ can be assumed to be any number greater than 1.
In this paper we consider a stronger property than the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for various classes of operators on a complex Hilbert space. The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás {\it point} property for some class $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathcal{L}(H)$ says that if one starts with a norm one operator $T$ belonging to $\mathcal{A}$, which almost attains its norm at some norm one vector $x_0$, then there is a new operator $S$, belonging to the same class $\mathcal{A}$, which is close to $T$ and attains its norm at the same vector $x_0$. We study it for classical operators on a complex Hilbert spaces …
By analogy with the classical definition, a Norm Hilbert space $E$ is defined as a Banach space over a valued field $K$ in which each closed subspace has an orthocomplement. In the rank one case (that is, the value group as well as the set of norms of the space are contained in $[0, \infty)$), they were described by van Rooij in his classical book of 1978, but the name itself was introduced in 1999 by Ochsenius and Schikhof for the case of spaces with an infinite rank valuation. Here we shall also consider only value groups that are contained in $(\R^+,\cdot)$, yet we borrow from the infinite …
A recent paper of Jerison and Figalli proved a relationship between the $H^{1/2}$ norms of smoothed out indicator functions of sets and their perimeter. We continue this line of investigation and extend it in two ways. First, we describe a description of the situation with general functions of bounded variation, and show that a related quantity controls the size of the jump set. Second, we provide an exact formula in the case of a set of finite perimeter. Several questions remain and are presented here.
Composition operators with analytic symbols on some reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of entire functions on a complex Hilbert space are studied. The questions of their boundedness, seminormality and positivity are investigated. It is proved that if such an operator is bounded, then its symbol is a polynomial of degree at most 1, i.e., it is an affine mapping. Fock's type model for composition operators with linear symbols is established. As a consequence, explicit formulas for their polar decomposition, Aluthge transform and powers with positive real exponents are provided. The theorem of Car…
We characterize the sets of norm one vectors $\mathbf{x}_1,\ldots,\mathbf{x}_k$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ such that there exists a $k$-linear symmetric form attaining its norm at $(\textbf{x}_1,\ldots,\mathbf{x}_k)$. We prove that in the bilinear case, any two vectors satisfy this property. However, for $k\ge 3$ only collinear vectors satisfy this property in the complex case, while in the real case this is equivalent to $\mathbf{x}_1,\ldots,\mathbf{x}_k$ spanning a subspace of dimension at most 2. We use these results to obtain some applications to symmetric multilinear forms, symmetric…
We consider Hilbert spaces of analytic functions in the disk with a normalized reproducing kernel and such that the backward shift $f(z) \mapsto \frac{f(z)-f(0)}{z}$ is a contraction on the space. We present a model for this operator and use it to prove the surprising result that functions which extend continuously to the closure of the disk are dense in the space. This has several applications, for example we can answer a question regarding reverse Carleson embeddings for these spaces. We also identify a large class of spaces which are similar to the de Branges-Rovnyak spaces and prove some r…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a Hilbert space, and let $K(\mathcal{H})$ be the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators on $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we present some characterizations of the norm-parallelism for elements of a Hilbert $K(\mathcal{H})$-module by employing the Birkhoff--James orthogonality. Among other things, we present a characterization of transitive relation of the norm-parallelism for elements in a certain Hilbert $K(\mathcal{H})$-module. We also give some characterizations of the Schatten $p$-norms and the operator norm-parallelism for matrices.
In this paper, we specify what functions induce the bounded composition operators on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) associated with an analytic positive definite function defined on $\mathbf{R}^d$. We prove that only affine transforms can do so in a pretty large class of RKHS. Our result covers not only the Paley-Wiener space on the real line, studied in previous works, but also much more general RKHSs corresponding to analytic positive definite functions where existing methods do not work. Our method only relies on an intrinsic properties of the RKHSs, and we establish a connection…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^m$ be an open, connected and bounded set and $\mathcal{A}(Ω)$ be a function algebra of holomorphic functions on $Ω$. In this article we study quotient Hilbert modules obtained from submodules, consisting of functions in $\mathcal{M}$ vanishing to order $k$ along a smooth irreducible complex analytic set $\mathcal{Z}\subsetΩ$ of codimension at least $2$, of a quasi-free Hilbert module, $\mathcal{M}$. Our motive is to investigate unitary invariants of such quotient modules. We completely determine unitary equivalence of aforementioned quotient modules and relate it to ge…
Let $\big(\mathscr{X}, \langle\cdot, \cdot\rangle\big)$ be a Hilbert $C^*$-module over a $C^*$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ and let $\mathcal{S}(\mathscr{A})$ be the set of states on $\mathscr{A}$. In this paper, we first compute the norm derivative for elements $x$ and $y$ of $\mathscr{X}$ as follows \begin{align*} ρ_{_{+}}(x, y) = \max\Big\{\mbox{Re}\,φ(\langle x, y\rangle): \, φ\in \mathcal{S}(\mathscr{A}), φ(\langle x, x\rangle) = \|x\|^2\Big\}. \end{align*} We then apply it to characterize different concepts of orthogonality in $\mathscr{X}$. In particular, we present a simpler proof of the clas…
A Drazin invertible Hilbert space operator $T\in \B$, with Drazin inverse $T_d$, is $(n,m)$-power D-normal, $T\in [(n,m) DN]$, if $[T_d^n,T^{*m}]=T^n_dT^{*m}-T^{*m}T_d^n=0$; $T$ is $(n,m)$-power D-quasinormal, $T\in [(n,m) DQN]$, if $[T_d^n,T^{*m}T]=0$. Operators $T\in [(n,m) DN]$ have a representation $T=T_1\oplus T_0$, where $T_1$ is similar to an invertible normal operator and $T_0$ is nilpotent. Using this representation, we have a keener look at the structure of $[(n,m) DN]$ and $[(n,m) DQN]$ operators. It is seen that $T\in [(n,m) DN]$ if and only if $T\in [(n,m) DQN]$, and if $[T,X]=0$ …
Recently proved weighted Cauchy Scwarz inequality for Hilbert $C^*$-modules leads to many Hölder type inequalities for unitarily invariant norms on Hilbert space operators.
We prove two new equivalences of the Feichtinger conjecture that involve reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We prove that if for every Hilbert space, contractively contained in the Hardy space, each Bessel sequence of normalized kernel functions can be partitioned into finitely many Riesz basic sequences, then a general bounded Bessel sequence in an arbitrary Hilbert space can be partitioned into finitely many Riesz basic sequences. In addition, we examine some of these spaces and prove that for these spaces bounded Bessel sequences of normalized kernel functions are finite unions of Riesz bas…
