The objective of this paper is to (partially) address the issue of finding an analogue to Khintchine's theorem for IFS Fractals. We study the convergence case for Diophantine approximations, and show an improved result for higher dimensions. This matter has been previously studied by Pollington and Velani in arXiv:math/0401149. Pollington and Velani show a similar result to the one in this paper (a Khinchine convergence case) and we shall show how our result is an improvement in the higher dimensional cases.
This paper is in the form of an essay. It defines fractal tops and code space structures associated with set-attractors of hyperbolic iterated function systems (IFSs). The fractal top of an IFS is associated with a certain shift invariant subspace of code space, whence the entropy of the IFS, and of its set-attractor, may be defined. Given any ordered pair of hyperbolic IFSs, each with the same number of maps, there is a natural transformation, constructed with the aid of fractal tops, whose domain is the attractor A of the first IFS and whose range is contained in the attractor B of the secon…
Let $0< λ< μ<1$ and $λ+μ>1$. In this note we prove that for the vast majority of such parameters the top of the attractor $A_{λ,μ}$ of the IFS $\{(λx,μy), (μx+1-μ, λy+1-λ)\}$ is the graph of a continuous, strictly increasing function. Despite this, for most parameters, $A_{λ, μ}$ has a box dimension strictly greater than 1, showing that the upper boundary is not representative of the complexity of the fractal. Finally, we prove that if $λμ\ge 2^{-1/6}$, then $A_{λ,μ}$ has a non-empty interior.
A fractal surface is a set which is a graph of a bivariate continuous function. In the construction of fractal surfaces using IFS, vertical scaling factors in IFS are important one which characterizes a fractal feature of surfaces constructed. We construct IFS with function vertical scaling factors which are 0 on the boundaries of a rectangular grid using arbitrary data set on a rectangular grid and give a condition for an attractor of the IFS constructed being a surface. Finally, lower and upper bounds of Box-counting dimension of the constructed surface are estimated.
We exploit dynamical properties of diagonal actions to derive results in Diophantine approximations. In particular, we prove that the continued fraction expansion of almost any point on the middle third Cantor set (with respect to the natural measure) contains all finite patterns (hence is well approximable). Similarly, we show that for a variety of fractals in [0,1]^2, possessing some symmetry, almost any point is not Dirichlet improvable (hence is well approximable) and has property C (after Cassels). We then settle by similar methods a conjecture of M. Boshernitzan saying that there are no …
IFS fractals - the attractors of Iterated Function Systems - have motivated plenty of research to date, partly due to their simplicity and applicability in various fields, such as the modeling of plants in computer graphics, and the design of fractal antennas. The statement and resolution of the Fractal-Line Intersection Problem is imperative for a more efficient treatment of certain applications. This paper intends to take further steps towards this resolution, building on the literature. For the broad class of hyperdense fractals, a verifiable condition guaranteeing intersection with any lin…
This article aims to study fractal interpolation functions corresponding to a sequence of iterated function systems (IFSs). For a suitable choice of a sequence of IFS parameters, the corresponding non-stationary fractal function is a better approximant for the non-smooth approximant. In this regard, we first construct the non-stationary interpolant in the Lipschitz space and study some topological properties of the associated non-linear fractal operator. Next, we discuss the stability of the interpolant having small perturbations. Also, we investigate the sensitivity with respect to the pertur…
The problem of finding the convex hull of an IFS fractal is relevant in both theoretical and computational settings. Various methods exist that approximate it, but our aim is its exact determination. The finiteness of extremal points is examined a priori from the IFS parameters, revealing some cases when the convex hull problem is solvable. Former results are detailed from the literature, and two new methods are introduced and crystallized for practical applicability -- one more general, the other more efficient. Focal periodicity in the address of extremal points emerges as the central idea.
The Iterated Function System(IFS) used in the construction of Coalescence Hidden-variable Fractal Interpolation Function depends on the interpolation data. In this note, the effect of insertion of data on the related IFS and the Coalescence Hidden-variable Fractal Interpolation Function is studied.
We describe in this survey several results relating Fractal Geometry, Dynamical Systems and Diophantine Approximations, including a description of recent results related to geometrical properties of the classical Markov and Lagrange spectra and generalizations in Dynamical Systems and Differential Geometry.
In this paper, we deal with the part of Fractal Theory related to finite families of (weak) contractions, called iterated function systems (IFS, herein). An attractor is a compact set which remains invariant for such a family. Thus, we consider spaces homeomorphic to attractors of either IFS or weak IFS, as well, which we will refer to as Banach and topological fractals, respectively. We present a collection of counterexamples in order to show that all the presented definitions are essential, though they are not equivalent in general.
We provide a new algorithm to generate images of the generalized fuzzy fractal attractors described in Oliveira-2017. We also provide some important results on the approximation of fractal operators to discrete subspaces with application to discrete versions of the deterministic algorithm for fractal image generation in the cases of IFS recovering the classical images from Barnsley et al., Fuzzy IFS from Cabrelli-1992 and GIFS's from Jaros-2016.
New tilings of certain subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{M}$ are studied, tilings associated with fractal blow-ups of certain similitude iterated function systems (IFS). For each such IFS with attractor satisfying the open set condition, our construction produces a usually infinite family of tilings that satisfy the following properties: (1) the prototile set is finite; (2) the tilings are repetitive (quasiperiodic); (3) each family contains self-similartilings, usually infinitely many; and (4) when the IFS is rigid in an appropriate sense, the tiling has no non-trivial symmetry; in particular the tilin…
We extend results of Y. Benoist and J.-F. Quint concerning random walks on homogeneous spaces of simple Lie groups to the case where the measure defining the random walk generates a semigroup which is not necessarily Zariski dense, but satisfies some expansion properties for the adjoint action. Using these dynamical results, we study diophantine properties of typical points on some self-similar fractals in R^d. As examples, we show that for any self-similar fractal K in R^d satisfying the open set condition (for instance any translate or dilate of Cantor's middle thirds set or of a Koch snowfl…
In the present work, the notion of Super Fractal Interpolation Function (SFIF) is introduced for finer simulation of the objects of the nature or outcomes of scientific experiments that reveal one or more structures embedded in to another. In the construction of SFIF, an IFS is chosen from a pool of several IFS at each level of iteration leading to implementation of the desired randomness and variability in fractal interpolation of the given data. Further, an expository description of our investigations on the integral, the smoothness and determination of conditions for existence of derivative…
In a first part, using the recent measure classification results of Eskin--Lindenstrauss, we give a criterion to ensure a.s. equidistribution of empirical measures of an i.i.d. random walk on a homogeneous space $G/Γ$. Employing renewal and joint equidistribution arguments, this result is generalized in the second part to random walks with Markovian dependence. Finally, following a strategy of Simmons--Weiss, we apply these results to Diophantine approximation problems on fractals and show that almost every point with respect to Hausdorff measure on a graph directed self-similar set is of gene…
The family of Generalised Sierpinski triangles consist of the classical Sierpinski triangle, the previously well investigated Pedal triangle and two new triangular shaped fractal objects denoted by $\triangle FNN$ and $\triangle FFN$. All of the generalised Sierpinski triangles are defined in terms of iterated functions systems (IFS's) found by generalising the classic IFS used for the Sierpinski triangle. In this paper the new IFSs for the two new types of fractal triangles are defined, the dimensions of the triangles are analysed, and applications for pedagogical use and tiling theory discus…
We construct a coalescence hidden variable fractal interpolation function (CHFIF) through a non-diagonal iterated function system(IFS). Such a FIF may be self-affine or non-self-affine depending on the parameters of the defining non-diagonal IFS. The smoothness analysis of the CHFIF has been carried out by using the operator approximation technique. The deterministic construction of functions having order of modulus continuity O (|t|^{delta} (log|t|)^m), (m a non-negative integer and 0 < delta le 1) is possible through our CHFIF. The bounds of fractal dimension of CHFIFs are obtained first in …
The fast basin of an attractor of an iterated function system (IFS) is the set of points in the domain of the IFS whose orbits under the associated semigroup intersect the attractor. Fast basins can have non-integer dimension and comprise a class of deterministic fractal sets. The relationship between the basin and the fast basin of a point-fibred attractor is analyzed. To better understand the topology and geometry of fast basins, and because of analogies with analytic continuation, branched fractal manifolds are introduced. A branched fractal manifold is a metric space constructed from the e…
We consider improvements of Dirichlet's Theorem on space of matrices $M_{m,n}(R)$. It is shown that for a certain class of fractals $K\subset [0,1]^{mn}\subset M_{m,n}(R)$ of local maximal dimension Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be improved almost everywhere. This is shown using entropy and dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups.
Let $\{S_i\}_{i=1}^{l}$ be an iterated function system(IFS) on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with attractor K. Let $π$ be the canonical projection. In this paper we define a new concept called "projection pressure" $P_π(ϕ)$ for $ϕ\in C(\mathbb{R}^d)$ under certain affine IFS, and show the variational principle about the projection pressure. Furthermore we check that the unique zero root of "projection pressure" still satisfies Bowen's equation when each $S_i$ is the similar map with the same compression ratio. Using the root of Bowen's equation, we can get the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor $K$.
In this paper, we characterize a novel separation property for IFS-attractors on complete metric spaces. Such a separation property is weaker than the strong open set condition (SOSC) and becomes necessary to reach the equality between the similarity and the Hausdorff dimensions of strict self-similar sets. We also investigate the size of the overlaps from the viewpoint of that separation property. In addition, we contribute some equivalent conditions to reach the equality between the similarity dimension and a new Hausdorff type dimension for IFS-attractors introduced by the authors in terms …
We consider the iterated function systems (IFSs) that consist of three general similitudes in the plane with centres at three non-collinear points, and with a common contraction factor $\la\in(0,1)$. As is well known, for $\la=1/2$ the invariant set, $§_\la$, is a fractal called the Sierpiński sieve, and for $\la<1/2$ it is also a fractal. Our goal is to study $§_\la$ for this IFS for $1/2<\la<2/3$, i.e., when there are "overlaps" in $§_\la$ as well as "holes". In this introductory paper we show that despite the overlaps (i.e., the Open Set Condition breaking down completely), the attractor ca…
We introduce new method of optimization for finding free parameters of affine iterated function systems (IFS), which are used for fractal approximation. We provide the comparison of effectiveness of fractal and quadratic types of approximation, which are based on a similar optimization scheme, on the various types of data: polynomial function, DNA primary sequence, price graph and graph of random walking.
We define fractal continuations and the fast basin of the IFS and investigate which properties they inherit from the attractor. Some illustrated examples are provided.
We show that for any $ε<1$ and any $\mathcal{T}$ `drifting away from walls', Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be $ε$-improved along $\mathcal{T}$ for Lebesgue almost every system of linear forms $Y$ (see the paper for definitions). In the case $m = 1$ we also show that for a large class of measures $μ$ there is $ε_0>0$ such that for any drifting away from walls $\mathcal{T}$, any $ε<ε_0$, and for $μ$-almost every $Y$, Dirichlet's Theorem cannot be $ε$-improved along $\mathcal{T}$. These measures include natural measures on sufficiently regular smooth manifolds and fractals. Our results extend those …
Non-Newtonian calculus that starts with elementary non-Diophantine arithmetic operations of a Burgin type is applicable to all fractals whose cardinality is continuum. The resulting definitions of derivatives and integrals are simpler from what one finds in the more traditional literature of the subject, and they often work in the cases where the standard methods fail. As an illustration, we perform a Fourier transform of a real-valued function with Sierpiński-set domain. The resulting formalism is as simple as the usual undergraduate calculus.
