The tensor rank of some Gabidulin codes of small dimension is investigated. In particular, we determine the tensor rank of any rank metric code equivalent to an $8$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear generalized Gabidulin code in $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{4\times4}$. This shows that such a code is never minimum tensor rank. In this way, we detect the first infinite family of Gabidulin codes which are not minimum tensor rank.
Wachter-Zeh in [42], and later together with Raviv [31], proved that Gabidulin codes cannot be efficiently list decoded for any radius $τ$, providing that $τ$ is large enough. Also, they proved that there are infinitely many choices of the parameters for which Gabidulin codes cannot be efficiently list decoded at all. Subsequently, in [41] these results have been extended to the family of generalized Gabidulin codes and to further family of MRD-codes. In this paper, we provide bounds on the list size of rank-metric codes containing generalized Gabidulin codes in order to determine whether or n…
Maximum rank-distance (MRD) codes are extremal codes in the space of $m\times n$ matrices over a finite field, equipped with the rank metric. Up to generalizations, the classical examples of such codes were constructed in the 1970s and are today known as Gabidulin codes. Motivated by several recent approaches to construct MRD codes that are inequivalent to Gabidulin codes, we study the equivalence issue for Gabidulin codes themselves. This shows in particular that the family of Gabidulin codes already contains a huge subset of MRD codes that are pairwise inequivalent, provided that $2\le m\le …
Generalized twisted Gabidulin codes are one of the few known families of maximum rank matrix codes over finite fields. As a subset of m by n matrices, when m=n, the automorphism group of any generalized twisted Gabidulin code has been completely determined recently. In this paper, we consider the same problem for m<n. Under certain conditions on their parameters, we determine their middle nuclei and right nuclei, which are important invariants with respect to the equivalence for rank metric codes. Furthermore, we also use them to derive necessary conditions on the automorphisms of generalized …
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a set of $m$ by $n$ matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$ for all distinct $A,B\in \mathcal{C}$. Suppose that $m\leqslant n$. If $\#\mathcal{C}= q^{n(m-d+1)}$, then $\mathcal{C}$ is a maximum rank distance (MRD for short) code. Until 2016, there were only two known constructions of MRD codes for arbitrary $1<d<m-1$. One was found by Delsarte (1978) and Gabidulin (1985) independently, and it was later generalized by Kshevetskiy and Gabidulin (2005). We often call them (generalized) Gabidulin codes. Another family was recently obtained by S…
We address the problem of decoding Gabidulin codes beyond their unique error-correction radius. The complexity of this problem is of importance to assess the security of some rank-metric code-based cryptosystems. We propose an approach that introduces row or column erasures to decrease the rank of the error in order to use any proper polynomial-time Gabidulin code error-erasure decoding algorithm. This approach improves on generic rank-metric decoders by an exponential factor.
In this paper, we determine the covering radius and a class of deep holes for Gabidulin codes with both rank metric and Hamming metric. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for deciding whether a word is not a deep hole for Gabidulin codes, by which we study the error distance of a special class of words to certain Gabidulin codes.
In this paper an interpolation-based decoding algorithm to decode Gabidulin codes, transmitted through a finely restricted channel, is proposed. The algorithm is able to decode rank errors beyond half the minimum distance by one unit. Also the existing decoding algorithms for generalized twisted Gabidulin codes and additive generalized twisted Gabidulin codes are improved.
Gabidulin codes are the first general construction of linear codes that are maximum rank distant (MRD). They have found applications in linear network coding, for example, when the transmitter and receiver are oblivious to the inner workings and topology of the network (the so-called incoherent regime). The reason is that Gabidulin codes can be used to map information to linear subspaces, which in the absence of errors cannot be altered by linear operations, and in the presence of errors can be corrected if the subspace is perturbed by a small rank. Furthermore, in distributed coding and distr…
We show that the sequence of dimensions of the linear spaces, generated by a given rank-metric code together with itself under several applications of a field automorphism, is an invariant for the whole equivalence class of the code. The same property is proven for the sequence of dimensions of the intersections of itself under several applications of a field automorphism. These invariants give rise to easily computable criteria to check if two codes are inequivalent. We derive some concrete values and bounds for these dimension sequences for some known families of rank-metric codes, namely Ga…
This article discusses the decoding of Gabidulin codes and shows how to extend the usual decoder to any supercode of a Gabidulin code at the cost of a significant decrease of the decoding radius. Using this decoder, we provide polynomial time attacks on the rank-metric encryption schemes RAMESSES and LIGA.
We characterize the generator matrix in standard form of generalized Gabidulin codes. The parametrization we get for the non-systematic part of this matrix coincides with the $q$-analogue of generalized Cauchy matrices, leading to the definition of $q$-Cauchy matrices. These matrices can be represented very conveniently and their representation allows to define new interesting subfamilies of generalized Gabidulin codes whose generator matrix is a structured matrix. In particular, as an application, we construct Gabidulin codes whose generator matrix is the concatenation of an identity block an…
Let $k,n,m \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ integers such that $k\leq n \leq m$, let $\mathrm{G}_{n,k}\in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n$ be a Delsarte-Gabidulin code. Wachter-Zeh proven that codes belonging to this family cannot be efficiently list decoded for any radius $τ$, providing $τ$ is large enough. This achievement essentially relies on proving a lower bound for the list size of some specific words in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n \setminus \mathrm{G}_{n,k}$. In 2016, Raviv and Wachter-Zeh improved this bound in a special case, i.e. when $n\mid m$. As a consequence, they were able to detect infinite families of Delsarte-…
We consider the decoding of rank metric codes assuming the error matrix is symmetric. We prove two results. First, for rates $<1/2$ there exists a broad family of rank metric codes for which any symmetric error pattern, even of maximal rank can be corrected. Moreover, the corresponding family of decodable codes includes Gabidulin codes of rate $<1/2$. Second, for rates $>1/2$, we propose a decoder for Gabidulin codes correcting symmetric errors of rank up to $n-k$. The two mentioned decoders are deterministic and worst case.
We define a class of automorphisms of rational function fields of finite characteristic and employ these to construct different types of optimal linear rank-metric codes. The first construction is of generalized Gabidulin codes over rational function fields. Reducing these codes over finite fields, we obtain maximum rank distance (MRD) codes which are not equivalent to generalized twisted Gabidulin codes. We also construct optimal Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes which settles further a conjecture by Etzion and Silberstein.
For any admissible value of the parameters there exist Maximum Rank distance (shortly MRD) $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-linear codes of $\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n}$. It has been shown in \cite{H-TNRR} (see also \cite{ByrneRavagnani}) that, if field extensions large enough are considered, then \emph{almost all} (rectangular) rank distance codes are MRD. On the other hand, very few families of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-linear codes are currently known up to equivalence. One of the possible applications of MRD-codes is for McEliece--like public key cryptosystems, as proposed by Gabidulin, Paramonov and Tretjakov in…
In this work we will present algorithms for decoding rank metric codes. First we will look at a new decoding algorithm for Gabidulin codes using the property of Dickson matrices corresponding to linearized polynomials. We will be using a Berlekamp-Massey-like algorithm in the process. We will show the difference between our and existing algorithms. Apart from being a new algorithm, it is also interesting that it can be modified to get a decoding algorithm for general twisted Gabidulin codes.
This paper investigates the decoding of certain Gabidulin codes that were transmitted over a channel with space-symmetric errors. Space-symmetric errors are additive error matrices that have the property that their column and row spaces are equal. We show that for channels restricted to space-symmetric errors, with high probability errors of rank up to 2(n-k)/3 can be decoded with a Gabidulin code of length n and dimension k, using a weak-self orthogonal basis as code locators.
Gabidulin codes over fields of characteristic zero were recently constructed by Augot et al., whenever the Galois group of the underlying field extension is cyclic. In parallel, the interest in sparse generator matrices of Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes has increased lately, due to applications in distributed computations. In particular, a certain condition pertaining the intersection of zero entries at different rows, was shown to be necessary and sufficient for the existence of the sparsest possible generator matrix of Gabidulin codes over finite fields. In this paper we complete the pictu…
Low-rank parity-check (LRPC) are rank-metric codes over finite fields, which have been proposed by Gaborit et al. (2013) for cryptographic applications. Inspired by a recent adaption of Gabidulin codes to certain finite rings by Kamche et al. (2019), we define and study LRPC codes over Galois rings - a wide class of finite commutative rings. We give a decoding algorithm similar to Gaborit et al.'s decoder, based on simple linear-algebraic operations. We derive an upper bound on the failure probability of the decoder, which is significantly more involved than in the case of finite fields. The b…
This paper presents a key recovery attack on the cryptosystem proposed by Lau and Tan in a talk at ACISP 2018. The Lau-Tan cryptosystem uses Gabidulin codes as the underlying decodable code. To hide the algebraic structure of Gabidulin codes, the authors chose a matrix of column rank $n$ to mix with a generator matrix of the secret Gabidulin code. The other part of the public key, however, reveals crucial information about the private key. Our analysis shows that the problem of recovering the private key can be reduced to solving a multivariate linear system over the base field, rather than so…
We propose the new rank-metric code-based cryptosystem LIGA which is based on the hardness of list decoding and interleaved decoding of Gabidulin codes. LIGA is an improved variant of the Faure-Loidreau (FL) system, which was broken in a structural attack by Gaborit, Otmani, and Talé Kalachi (GOT, 2018). We keep the FL encryption and decryption algorithms, but modify the insecure key generation algorithm. Our crucial observation is that the GOT attack is equivalent to decoding an interleaved Gabidulin code. The new key generation algorithm constructs public keys for which all polynomial-time i…
This paper presents an algorithm for decoding homogeneous interleaved codes of high interleaving order in the rank metric. The new decoder is an adaption of the Hamming-metric decoder by Metzner and Kapturowski (1990) and guarantees to correct all rank errors of weight up to $d-2$ whose rank over the large base field of the code equals the number of errors, where $d$ is the minimum rank distance of the underlying code. In contrast to previously-known decoding algorithms, the new decoder works for any rank-metric code, not only Gabidulin codes. It is purely based on linear-algebraic computation…

Reed-Solomon codes and Gabidulin codes have maximum Hamming distance and maximum rank distance, respectively. A general construction using skew polynomials, called skew Reed-Solomon codes, has already been introduced in the literature. In this work, we introduce a linearized version of such codes, called linearized Reed-Solomon codes. We prove that they have maximum sum-rank distance. Such distance is of interest in multishot network coding or in singleshot multi-network coding. To prove our result, we introduce new metrics defined by skew polynomials, which we call skew metrics, we prove that…
After a seminal paper by Shekeey (2016), a connection between maximum $h$-scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $V(r,q^n)$ and maximum rank distance (MRD) codes has been established in the extremal cases $h=1$ and $h=r-1$. In this paper, we propose a connection for any $h\in\{1,\ldots,r-1\}$, extending and unifying all the previously known ones. As a consequence, we obtain examples of non-square MRD codes which are not equivalent to generalized Gabidulin or twisted Gabidulin codes. Up to equivalence, we classify MRD codes having the same parameters as the ones in our connection. Also, we deter…
In this note, we provide a description of the elements of minimum rank of a generalized Gabidulin code in terms of Grassmann coordinates. As a consequence, a characterization of linearized polynomials of rank at most $n-k$ is obtained, as well as parametric equations for MRD-codes of distance $d=n-k+1$.
We speed up existing decoding algorithms for three code classes in different metrics: interleaved Gabidulin codes in the rank metric, lifted interleaved Gabidulin codes in the subspace metric, and linearized Reed-Solomon codes in the sum-rank metric. The speed-ups are achieved by new algorithms that reduce the cores of the underlying computational problems of the decoders to one common tool: computing left and right approximant bases of matrices over skew polynomial rings. To accomplish this, we describe a skew-analogue of the existing PM-Basis algorithm for matrices over ordinary polynomials.…
