Gabidulin codes over fields of characteristic zero were recently constructed by Augot et al., whenever the Galois group of the underlying field extension is cyclic. In parallel, the interest in sparse generator matrices of Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes has increased lately, due to applications in distributed computations. In particular, a certain condition pertaining the intersection of zero entries at different rows, was shown to be necessary and sufficient for the existence of the sparsest possible generator matrix of Gabidulin codes over finite fields. In this paper we complete the picture by showing that the same condition is also necessary and sufficient for Gabidulin codes over fields of characteristic zero. Our proof builds upon and extends tools from the finite field case, combines them with a variant of the Schwartz-Zippel lemma over automorphisms, and provides a simple randomized construction algorithm whose probability of success can be arbitrarily close to one. In addition, potential applications for low-rank matrix recovery are discussed.
Gabidulin codes are the first general construction of linear codes that are maximum rank distant (MRD). They have found applications in linear network coding, for example, when the transmitter and receiver are oblivious to the inner workings and topology of the network (the so-called incoherent regime). The reason is that Gabidulin codes can be used to map information to linear subspaces, which in the absence of errors cannot be altered by linear operations, and in the presence of errors can be corrected if the subspace is perturbed by a small rank. Furthermore, in distributed coding and distr…
We characterize the generator matrix in standard form of generalized Gabidulin codes. The parametrization we get for the non-systematic part of this matrix coincides with the $q$-analogue of generalized Cauchy matrices, leading to the definition of $q$-Cauchy matrices. These matrices can be represented very conveniently and their representation allows to define new interesting subfamilies of generalized Gabidulin codes whose generator matrix is a structured matrix. In particular, as an application, we construct Gabidulin codes whose generator matrix is the concatenation of an identity block an…
We consider linear rank-metric codes in $\mathbb F_{q^m}^n$. We show that the properties of being MRD (maximum rank distance) and non-Gabidulin are generic over the algebraic closure of the underlying field, which implies that over a large extension field a randomly chosen generator matrix generates an MRD and a non-Gabidulin code with high probability. Moreover, we give upper bounds on the respective probabilities in dependence on the extension degree $m$.
We transpose the theory of rank metric and Gabidulin codes to the case of fields which are not finite fields. The Frobenius automorphism is replaced by any element of the Galois group of a cyclic algebraic extension of a base field. We use our framework to define Gabidulin codes over the field of rational functions using algebraic function fields with a cyclic Galois group. This gives a linear subspace of matrices whose coefficients are rational function, such that the rank of each of this matrix is lower bounded, where the rank is comprised in term of linear combination with rational function…
Maximum rank-distance (MRD) codes are extremal codes in the space of $m\times n$ matrices over a finite field, equipped with the rank metric. Up to generalizations, the classical examples of such codes were constructed in the 1970s and are today known as Gabidulin codes. Motivated by several recent approaches to construct MRD codes that are inequivalent to Gabidulin codes, we study the equivalence issue for Gabidulin codes themselves. This shows in particular that the family of Gabidulin codes already contains a huge subset of MRD codes that are pairwise inequivalent, provided that $2\le m\le …
We present a new approach on low-rank matrix recovery (LRMR) based on Gabidulin Codes. Since most applications of LRMR deal with matrices over infinite fields, we use the recently introduced generalization of Gabidulin codes to fields of characterstic zero. We show that LRMR can be reduced to decoding of Gabidulin codes and discuss which field extensions can be used in the code construction.
Generalized twisted Gabidulin codes are one of the few known families of maximum rank matrix codes over finite fields. As a subset of m by n matrices, when m=n, the automorphism group of any generalized twisted Gabidulin code has been completely determined recently. In this paper, we consider the same problem for m<n. Under certain conditions on their parameters, we determine their middle nuclei and right nuclei, which are important invariants with respect to the equivalence for rank metric codes. Furthermore, we also use them to derive necessary conditions on the automorphisms of generalized …
Let K be a cyclic Galois extension of degree f over k and T a generator of the Galois group. For any v=(v_1,... , v_m)\in K^m such that v is linearly independent over k, and any 0< d < m the Gabidulin-like code C(v, T , d) is a maximum rank distance code in the space of f times m matrices over k of dimension fd. This construction unifies the ones available in the literature. We characterise the K-linear codes that are Gabidulin-like codes and determine their rank-metric automorphism group.
We prove that Alekhnovich's algorithm can be used for row reduction of skew polynomial matrices. This yields an $O(\ell^3 n^{(ω+1)/2} \log(n))$ decoding algorithm for $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes of length $n$, where $ω$ is the matrix multiplication exponent, improving in the exponent of $n$ compared to previous results.
This paper presents a key recovery attack on the cryptosystem proposed by Lau and Tan in a talk at ACISP 2018. The Lau-Tan cryptosystem uses Gabidulin codes as the underlying decodable code. To hide the algebraic structure of Gabidulin codes, the authors chose a matrix of column rank $n$ to mix with a generator matrix of the secret Gabidulin code. The other part of the public key, however, reveals crucial information about the private key. Our analysis shows that the problem of recovering the private key can be reduced to solving a multivariate linear system over the base field, rather than so…
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a set of $m$ by $n$ matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$ for all distinct $A,B\in \mathcal{C}$. Suppose that $m\leqslant n$. If $\#\mathcal{C}= q^{n(m-d+1)}$, then $\mathcal{C}$ is a maximum rank distance (MRD for short) code. Until 2016, there were only two known constructions of MRD codes for arbitrary $1<d<m-1$. One was found by Delsarte (1978) and Gabidulin (1985) independently, and it was later generalized by Kshevetskiy and Gabidulin (2005). We often call them (generalized) Gabidulin codes. Another family was recently obtained by S…
In this work we will present algorithms for decoding rank metric codes. First we will look at a new decoding algorithm for Gabidulin codes using the property of Dickson matrices corresponding to linearized polynomials. We will be using a Berlekamp-Massey-like algorithm in the process. We will show the difference between our and existing algorithms. Apart from being a new algorithm, it is also interesting that it can be modified to get a decoding algorithm for general twisted Gabidulin codes.
This paper investigates the decoding of certain Gabidulin codes that were transmitted over a channel with space-symmetric errors. Space-symmetric errors are additive error matrices that have the property that their column and row spaces are equal. We show that for channels restricted to space-symmetric errors, with high probability errors of rank up to 2(n-k)/3 can be decoded with a Gabidulin code of length n and dimension k, using a weak-self orthogonal basis as code locators.
We show that decoding of $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes, as well as list-$\ell$ decoding of Mahdavifar--Vardy codes can be performed by row reducing skew polynomial matrices. Inspired by row reduction of $\F[x]$ matrices, we develop a general and flexible approach of transforming matrices over skew polynomial rings into a certain reduced form. We apply this to solve generalised shift register problems over skew polynomial rings which occur in decoding $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes. We obtain an algorithm with complexity $O(\ell μ^2)$ where $μ$ measures the size of the input problem an…
This work deals with partial MDS (PMDS) codes, a special class of locally repairable codes, used for distributed storage system. We first show that a known construction of these codes, using Gabidulin codes, can be extended to use any maximum rank distance code. Then we define a standard form for the generator matrices of PMDS codes and use this form to give an algebraic description of PMDS generator matrices. This implies that over a sufficiently large finite field a randomly chosen generator matrix in PMDS standard form generates a PMDS code with high probability. This also provides sufficie…
Linear codes over finite extension fields have widespread applications in theory and practice. In some scenarios, the decoder has a sequential access to the codeword symbols, giving rise to a hierarchical erasure structure. In this paper we develop a mathematical framework for hierarchical erasures over extension fields, provide several bounds and constructions, and discuss potential applications in distributed storage and flash memories. Our results show intimate connection to Universally Decodable Matrices, as well as to Reed-Solomon and Gabidulin codes.
We present a new class of sparse and easily invertible circulant matrices that can have a sparse inverse though not being permutation matrices. Their study is useful in the design of quasi-cyclic low-density generator matrix codes, that are able to join the inner structure of quasi-cyclic codes with sparse generator matrices, so limiting the number of elementary operations needed for encoding. Circulant matrices of the proposed class permit to hit both targets without resorting to identity or permutation matrices that may penalize the code minimum distance and often cause significant error flo…
Support constrained generator matrix for a linear code has been an active topic in recent years. The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of MDS codes over small fields with support constrained generator matrices were conjectured by Dau, Song, Yuen in 2014. This GM-MDS conjecture was proved independently by Lovett and Yildiz-Hassibi in 2018. In this paper we propose the necessary and sufficient conditions for support constrained generator matrices of general linear codes based on the generalized Hamming weights. It is proved that the direct generalization of the GM-MDS conjectu…
We quantify precisely the distribution of the output of a binary random number generator (RNG) after conditioning with a binary linear code generator matrix by showing the connection between the Walsh spectrum of the resulting random variable and the weight distribution of the code. Previously known bounds on the performance of linear binary codes as entropy extractors can be derived by considering generator matrices as a selector of a subset of that spectrum. We also extend this framework to the case of non-binary codes.
We show that given $n$ and $k$, for $q$ sufficiently large, there always exists an $[n, k]_q$ MDS code that has a generator matrix $G$ satisfying the following two conditions: (C1) Sparsest: each row of $G$ has Hamming weight $n - k + 1$; (C2) Balanced: Hamming weights of the columns of $G$ differ from each other by at most one.
Polar coding is a recently proposed coding technique that can provably achieve the channel capacity. The polar code structure, which is based on the original 2x2 generator matrix, polarises the channels, i.e., a portion of the channel capacities approach 1, while the remaining channel capacities approach 0. Due to the specific size of this original generator matrix, polar codes can only have code lengths equal to the powers of 2, resulting in inefficiency for codes of practical lengths. In this paper, the performance of finite-length polar codes over the binary erasure channel is analysed. A n…
In this note, we present an analogue for codes in vector spaces with a Rosenbloom-Tsfasman metric of the well-known standard form of generator matrices for codes in spaces with the Hamming metric.
We prove that for any positive integers $n$ and $k$ such that $n\!\geq\! k\!\geq\! 1$, there exists an $[n,k]$ generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) code that has a sparsest and balanced generator matrix (SBGM) over any finite field of size $q\!\geq\! n\!+\!\lceil\frac{k(k-1)}{n}\rceil$, where sparsest means that each row of the generator matrix has the least possible number of nonzeros, while balanced means that the number of nonzeros in any two columns differ by at most one. Previous work by Dau et al (ISIT'13) showed that there always exists an MDS code that has an SBGM over any finite field of si…
We give constructions of some special cases of $[n,k]$ Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields of size at least $n$ and $n+1$ whose generator matrices have constrained support. Furthermore, we consider a generalisation of the GM-MDS conjecture proposed by Lovett in 2018. We show that Lovett's conjecture is false in general and we specify when the conjecture is true.
We introduce a consistent and efficient method to construct self-dual codes over $GF(q)$ with symmetric generator matrices from a self-dual code over $GF(q)$ of smaller length where $q \equiv 1 \pmod 4$. Using this method, we improve the best-known minimum weights of self-dual codes, which have not significantly improved for almost two decades. We focus on a class of self-dual codes, including double circulant codes. Using our method, called a `symmetric building-up' construction, we obtain many new self-dual codes over $GF(13)$ and $GF(17)$ and improve the bounds of best-known minimum weights…
We study the existence over small fields of Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes with generator matrices having specified supports (i.e. having specified locations of zero entries). This problem unifies and simplifies the problems posed in recent works of Yan and Sprintson (NetCod'13) on weakly secure cooperative data exchange, of Halbawi et al. (arxiv'13) on distributed Reed-Solomon codes for simple multiple access networks, and of Dau et al. (ISIT'13) on MDS codes with balanced and sparse generator matrices. We conjecture that there exist such $[n,k]_q$ MDS codes as long as $q \geq n + k -…
In this work, we define composite matrices which are derived from group rings. We extend the idea of G-codes to composite G-codes. We show that these codes are ideals in a group ring, where the ring is a finite commutative Frobenius ring and G is an arbitrary finite group. We prove that the dual of a composite G-code is also a composite G-code. We define quasi-composite G-codes and give a construction of these codes. We also study generator matrices, which consist of the identity matrices and the composite matrices. Together with the generator matrices, the well known extension method, the nei…
Basic properties of a characteristic matrix for a tail-biting convolutional code are investigated. A tail-biting convolutional code can be regarded as a linear block code. Since the corresponding scalar generator matrix Gt has a kind of cyclic structure, an associated characteristic matrix also has a cyclic structure, from which basic properties of a characteristic matrix are obtained. Next, using the derived results, we discuss the possibility of trellis reduction for a given tail-biting convolutional code. There are cases where we can find a scalar generator matrix Gs equivalent to Gt based …
Stochastic encoders for channel coding and lossy source coding are introduced with a rate close to the fundamental limits, where the only restriction is that the channel input alphabet and the reproduction alphabet of the lossy source code are finite. Random numbers, which satisfy a condition specified by a function and its value, are used to construct stochastic encoders. The proof of the theorems is based on the hash property of an ensemble of functions, where the results are extended to general channels/sources and alternative formulas are introduced for channel capacity and the rate-distor…
In this paper, we propose a new coded computing technique called "substitute decoding" for general iterative distributed computation tasks. In the first part of the paper, we use PageRank as a simple example to show that substitute decoding can make the computation of power iterations solving PageRank on sparse matrices robust to erasures in distributed systems. For these sparse matrices, codes with dense generator matrices can significantly increase storage costs and codes with low-density generator matrices (LDGM) are preferred. Surprisingly, we show through both theoretical analysis and sim…
A general multi-terminal source code and a general multi-terminal channel code are presented. Constrained-random-number generators with sparse matrices, which are building blocks for the code construction, are used in the construction of both encoders and decoders. Achievable regions for source coding and channel coding are derived in terms of entropy functions, where the capacity region for channel coding provides an alternative to the region of [Somekh-Baruch and Verdú, ISIT2006].
In this paper, locally repairable codes with all-symbol locality are studied. Methods to modify already existing codes are presented. Also, it is shown that with high probability, a random matrix with a few extra columns guaranteeing the locality property, is a generator matrix for a locally repairable code with a good minimum distance. The proof of this gives also a constructive method to find locally repairable codes.
Maximum distance separable convolutional codes are the codes that present best performance in error correction among all convolutional codes with certain rate and degree. In this paper, we show that taking the constant matrix coefficients of a polynomial matrix as submatrices of a superregular matrix, we obtain a column reduced generator matrix of an MDS convolutional code with a certain rate and a certain degree. We then present two novel constructions that fulfill these conditions by considering two types of superregular matrices.
A code ${\cal C}$ is $\Z_2\Z_4$-additive if the set of coordinates can be partitioned into two subsets $X$ and $Y$ such that the punctured code of ${\cal C}$ by deleting the coordinates outside $X$ (respectively, $Y$) is a binary linear code (respectively, a quaternary linear code). In this paper $\Z_2\Z_4$-additive codes are studied. Their corresponding binary images, via the Gray map, are $\Z_2\Z_4$-linear codes, which seem to be a very distinguished class of binary group codes. As for binary and quaternary linear codes, for these codes the fundamental parameters are found and standard forms…
Over fields of characteristic unequal to $2$, we can identify symmetric matrices with homogeneous polynomials of degree $2$. This allows us to view symmetric rank-metric codes as living inside the space of such polynomials. In this paper, we generalize the construction of symmetric Gabidulin codes to polynomials of degree $d>2$ over field of characteristic $0$ or $>d$. To do so, we equip the space of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d\geq 2$ with the metric induced by the essential rank, which is the minimal number of linear forms needed to express a polynomial. We provide bounds on the mini…
Four circulant codes form a special class of $2$-generator, index $4$, quasi-cyclic codes. Under some conditions on their generator matrices they can be shown to be self-dual. Artin primitive root conjecture shows the existence of an infinite subclass of these codes satisfying a modified Gilbert-Varshamov bound.
In this paper we study Z2Z4Z8-additive codes, which are the extension of recently introduced Z2Z4-additive codes. We determine the standard forms of the generator and parity-check matrices of Z2Z4Z8-additive codes. Moreover, we investigate Z2Z4Z8-cyclic codes giving their generator polynomials and spanning sets. We also give some illustrative examples of both Z2Z4Z8-additive codes and Z2Z4Z8-cyclic codes.
We evaluate typical performance of irregular low-density generator-matrix (LDGM) codes, which is defined by sparse matrices with arbitrary irregular bit degree distribution and arbitrary check degree distribution, for lossy compression. We apply the replica method under one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) ansatz to this problem.
In this paper, we leverage polar codes and the well-established channel polarization to design capacity-achieving codes with a certain constraint on the weights of all the columns in the generator matrix (GM) while having a low-complexity decoding algorithm. We first show that given a binary-input memoryless symmetric (BMS) channel $W$ and a constant $s \in (0, 1]$, there exists a polarization kernel such that the corresponding polar code is capacity-achieving with the \textit{rate of polarization} $s/2$, and the GM column weights being bounded from above by $N^s$. To improve the sparsity vers…
There are different ways to realize Reed Solomon (RS) codes. While in the storage community, using the generator matrices to implement RS codes is more popular, in the coding theory community the generator polynomials are typically used to realize RS codes. Prominent exceptions include HDFS-RAID, which uses generator polynomial based erasure codes, and extends the Apache Hadoop's file system. In this paper we evaluate the performance of an implementation of polynomial realization of Reed-Solomon codes, along with our optimized version of it, against that of a widely-used library (Jerasure) tha…
Double Toeplitz (DT) codes are codes with a generator matrix of the form $(I,T)$ with $T$ a Toeplitz matrix, that is to say constant on the diagonals parallel to the main. When $T$ is tridiagonal and symmetric we determine its spectrum explicitly by using Dickson polynomials, and deduce from there conditions for the code to be LCD. Using a special concatenation process, we construct optimal or quasi-optimal examples of binary and ternary LCD codes from DT codes over extension fields.
We introduce two generalizations to the paradigm of using Random Khatri-Rao Product (RKRP) codes for distributed matrix multiplication. We first introduce a class of codes called Sparse Random Khatri-Rao Product (SRKRP) codes which have sparse generator matrices. SRKRP codes result in lower encoding, computation and communication costs than RKRP codes when the input matrices are sparse, while they exhibit similar numerical stability to other state of the art schemes. We empirically study the relationship between the probability of the generator matrix (restricted to the set of non-stragglers) …
