On a smooth, closed Riemannian manifold $\left(M,g\right)$ of dimension $n\ge3$, we consider the stationary Schrödinger equation $Δ_gu+h_0u=\left|u\right|^{2^*-2}u$, where $Δ_g:=-\text{div}_g\nabla$, $h_0\in C^1\left(M\right)$ and $2^* :=\frac{2n}{n-2}$. We prove that, up to perturbations of the potential function $h_0$ in $C^1\left(M\right)$, the sets of sign-changing solutions that are bounded in $H^1\left(M\right)$ are precompact in the $C^2$ topology. We obtain this result under the assumptions that $\left(M,g\right)$ is locally conformally flat, $n\ge7$ and $h_0\ne\frac{n-2}{4\left(n-1\right)}\text{Scal}_g$ at all points in $M$, where $\text{Scal}_g$ is the scalar curvature of the manifold. We then provide counterexamples in every dimension $n\ge3$ showing the optimality of these assumptions.
We obtain existence and multiplicity results for quasilinear fourth order elliptic equations on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ with sign-changing potential. Our results generalize some recent results on this problem.
We construct blowing-up sign-changing solutions to some nonlinear critical equations by glueing a standard bubble to a degenerate function. We develop a method based on analyticity to perform the glueing when the critical manifold of solutions is degenerate and no Bianchi--Egnell type condition holds.
Results on existence and multiplicity of solutions for a nonlinear elliptic problem driven by the $Φ$-Laplace operator are established. We employ minimization arguments on suitable Nehari manifolds to build a negative and a positive ground state solutions. In order to find a nodal solution we employ additionally the well known Deformation Lemma and Topological Degree Theory.
In this work we prove the existence of infinitely many nonradial solutions that change signal to the problem $-Δu=f(u)$ in $B$ with $u=0$ on $\partial B$, where $B$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $f$ is a continuous and odd function with exponential critical growth.
We study sign-changing radial solutions for the following semi-linear elliptic equation \begin{align*} Δu-u+|u|^{p-1}u=0\quad{\rm{in}}\ \mathbb{R}^N,\quad u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{align*} where $1<p<\frac{N+2}{N-2}$, $N\geq3$. It is well-known that this equation has a unique positive radial solution and sign-changing radial solutions with exactly $k$ nodes. In this paper, we show that such sign-changing radial solution is also unique when $p$ is close to $\frac{N+2}{N-2}$. Moreover, those solutions are non-degenerate, i.e., the kernel of the linearized operator is exactly $N$-dimensional.
We consider planar solutions to certain quasilinear elliptic equations subject to the Dirichlet boundary conditions; the boundary data is assumed to have finite number of relative maximum and minimum values. We are interested in certain vanishing properties of sign changing solutions to such a Dirichlet problem. Our method is applicable in the plane.
By a perturbative argument, we construct solutions for a plasma-type problem with two opposite-signed sharp peaks at levels $1$ and $-γ$, respectively, where $0<γ<1$. We establish some physically relevant qualitative properties for such solutions, including the connectedness of the level sets and the asymptotic location of the peaks as $γ\to0^+$.
In this paper we prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $ -Δ_p u = f(u) $ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, for $(2N+2)/(N+2) < p < 2$ and for a general class of regular changing-sign nonlinearities $f$. The techniques used in the proof of the main result are based on a fine use of comparison and maximum principles and on an adaptation of the celebrated moving plane method to quasilinear elliptic equations in unbounded domains.
We study the existence of positive and sign-changing multipeak solutions for the stationary Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation. Here no symmetry on $V$ is assumed. It is known that this equation has positive multipeak solutions with all peaks approaching a local maximum of the potential. It is also proved that solutions alternating positive and negative spikes exist in the case of a minima. The aim of this paper is to show the existence of both positive and sign-changing multipeak solutions around a nondegenerate saddle point of the external potential.
We prove the existence of positive and of nodal solutions for $-Δu = |u|^{p-2}u+μ|u|^{q-2}u$, $u\in {\rm H_0^1}(Ω)$, where $μ>0$ and $2<q<p=2N(N-2)$, for a class of open subsets $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ lying between two infinite cylinders.
In this article, we prove the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for the following fractional elliptic equation with sign-changing weight functions: \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\begin{array}{l@{\quad }l} (-Δ)^αu= a_λ(x)|u|^{q-2}u+b(x)|u|^{2^*_α-1}u &{\rm in}\,\,Ω, u=0\,\,&{\rm in}\,\,\R^N\setminusΩ, \end{array} \right. \end{eqnarray*} where $0<α<1$, $ Ω$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary in $ \R^N $ with $N>2α$ and $ 2^*_α=2N/(N-2α)$ is the fractional critical Sobolev exponent. Our multiplicity results are based on studying the decomposition of the Nehari manifold and the Lju…
We study the existence and multiplicity of sign changing solutions of the following equation $ \begin{cases} -Δu = μ|u|^{2^{\star}-2}u+\frac{|u|^{2^{*}(t)-2}u}{|x|^t}+a(x)u \quad\text{in}\quad Ω, u=0 \quad\text{on}\quad\partialΩ, \end{cases} $where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $R^N$, $0\in\partialΩ$, all the principal curvatures of $\partialΩ$ at $0$ are negative and $μ\geq 0, \ \ a>0, \ \ N\geq 7, \ \ 0<t<2, \ \ 2^{\star}=\frac{2N}{N-2}$ and $2^{\star}(t)=\frac{2(N-t)}{N-2}$.
We prove sharp pointwise blow-up estimates for finite-energy sign-changing solutions of critical equations of Schrödinger-Yamabe type on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n \ge 3$. This is a generalisation of the so-called $C^0$-theory for positive solutions of Schrödinger-Yamabe type equations. To deal with the sign-changing case we develop a method of proof that combines an \emph{a priori} bubble-tree analysis with a finite-dimensional reduction, and reduces the proof to obtaining sharp \emph{a priori} blow-up estimates for a linear problem.
We study the asymptotic and qualitative properties of least energy radial sign-changing solutions to fractional semilinear elliptic problems of the form \[ \begin{cases} (-Δ)^s u = |u|^{2^*_s-2-\varepsilon}u &\text{in } B_R, \\ u = 0 &\text{in }\mathbb{R}^n \setminus B_R, \end{cases} \] where $s \in (0,1)$, $(-Δ)^s$ is the s-Laplacian, $B_R$ is a ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $2^*_s := \frac{2n}{n-2s}$ is the critical Sobolev exponent and $\varepsilon>0$ is a small parameter. We prove that such solutions have the limit profile of a "tower of bubbles", as $ \varepsilon \to 0^+$, i.e. the positive and…
In this paper, we investigate the existence of nontrivial weak solutions to a class of elliptic equations ($\mathscr{P}$) involving a general nonlocal integrodifferential operator $\mathscr{L}_{\mathcal{A}K}$, two real parameters, and two weight functions, which can be sign-changing. Considering different situations concerning the growth of the nonlinearities involved in the problem ($\mathscr{P}$), we prove the existence of two nontrivial distinct solutions and the existence of a continuous family of eigenvalues. The proofs of the main results are based on ground state solutions using the Neh…
In this note we prove the Payne-type conjecture about the behaviour of the nodal set of least energy sign-changing solutions for the equation $-Δ_p u = f(u)$ in bounded Steiner symmetric domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ under the zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. The nonlinearity $f$ is assumed to be either superlinear or resonant. In the latter case, least energy sign-changing solutions are second eigenfunctions of the zero Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian in $Ω$. We show that the nodal set of any least energy sign-changing solution intersects the boundary of $Ω$. The proof is based on a moving polar…
In this paper we prove that the equation $ -( r^αϕ(|u'(r)|)u'(r))' = λr^γf(u(r)), ~0<r<R$, where $α, γ, {\bf{R}}$ are given real numbers, $ϕ: (0, \infty) \to (0, \infty)$ is a suitable twice differentiable function, $λ> 0$ is a real parameter and $f:{\bf{R}}\to{\bf{R}}$ is continuous, admits an infinite sequence of sign-changing solutions satisfying $u'(0) =u(R) =0$. The function $f$ is required to satisfy $tf(t)>0$ for $ t\neq 0$. Our technique explores fixed point arguments applied to suitable integral equations and shooting arguments. Our main result extends earlier ones in the case $ϕ$ is …
We are concerned on the fourth-order elliptic equation \begin{equation}\tag{$P_λ$} \left\{ \begin{array}[c]{ll} Δ^2 u- Δu + V(x)u -λΔ[ρ(u^2)]ρ'(u^2)u= f(u)\, \, \mbox{in} \, \, \mathbb{R}^N, & u\in W^{2,2}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $Δ^2 = Δ(Δ)$ is the biharmonic operator, $3\leq N\leq 6$, the radially symmetric potential $V$ may change sign and $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V(x)=-\infty$ is allowed. If $f$ satisfies a type of nonquadracity and monotonicity conditions and $ρ$ is a suitable smooth function, we prove, via variational approach, the existence of a radially symme…
We consider the fractional elliptic inequality with variable-exponent nonlinearity $$ (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} u+λ\, Δu \geq |u|^{p(x)}, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $N\geq 1$, $α\in (0,2)$, $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ is a constant, $p: \mathbb{R}^N\to (1,\infty)$ is a measurable function, and $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ is the fractional Laplacian operator of order $\fracα{2}$. A Liouville-type theorem is established for the considered problem. Namely, we obtain sufficient conditions under which the only weak solution is the trivial one. Next, we extend our study to systems of fractional elliptic inequalities with …
In 2009 Loc and Schmitt established a result on sufficient conditions for multiplicity of solutions of a class of nonlinear eignvalue problems for the p-Laplace operator under Dirichlet boundary conditions, extending an earlier result of 1981 by Peter Hess for the Laplacian. Results on necessary conditions for existence were also established. In the present paper the authors extend the main results by Loc and Schmitt to the $Φ$-Laplacian. To overcome the difficulties with this much more general operator it was necessary to employ regularity results by Lieberman, a strong maximum principle by P…
In this paper, we investigate the following elliptic problem involving double critical Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya terms: $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = μ\frac{|u|^{2^*(t)-2}u}{|y|^t} + \frac{|u|^{2^*(s)-2}u}{|y|^s} + a(x) u, & {\rm in}\ Ω,\\ \quad u = 0, \,\, &{\rm on}\ \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. $$ where $μ\geq0$, $a(x)>0$, $2^*(t)=\frac{2(N-t)}{N-2}$, $2^*(s) = \frac{2(N-s)}{N-2}$, $0\leq t<s<2$, $x = (y,z)\in \mathbb{R}^k\times \mathbb{R}^{N-k}$, $2\leq k<N$, $(0,z^*) \in \barΩ$ and $Ω$ is an bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$. Applying an abstract theorem in \cite{sz}, we prove that if $N>…
In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many sign-changing solutions for the system of $m$ Schrödinger equations with competition interactions $$ -Δu_i+a_i u_i^3+βu_i \sum_{j\neq i} u_j^2 =λ_{i,β} u_i \quad u_i\in H^1_0(Ω), \quad i=1,...,m $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain, $β>0$ and $a_i\geq 0\ \forall i.$ Moreover, for $a_i=0$, we show a relation between critical energies associated with this system and the optimal partition problem $$ \mathop{\inf_{ω_i\subset Ω\text{open}}}_{ω_i\cap ω_j=\emptyset\forall i\neq j} \sum_{i=1}^{m} λ_{k_i}(ω_i), $$ where $λ_{k_i}(ω)$ denotes the $k_i$-…
In this paper, we shall establish a Dancer-type unilateral global bifurcation result for a class of quasilinear elliptic problems with sign-changing weight. Under some natural hypotheses on perturbation function, we show that $(μ_k^ν(p),0)$ is a bifurcation point of the above problems and there are two distinct unbounded continua, $(\mathcal{C}_{k}^ν)^+$ and $(\mathcal{C}_{k}^ν)^-$, consisting of the bifurcation branch $\mathcal{C}_{k}^ν$ from $(μ_k^ν(p), 0)$, where $μ_k^ν(p)$ is the $k$-th positive or negative eigenvalue of the linear problem corresponding to the above problems, $ν\in\{+,-\}$…
We study the existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions having positive and sign-changing components to the singularly perturbed system of elliptic equations \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2Δu_i+u_i=μ_i|u_i|^{p-2}u_i + \sum\limits_{\substack{j=1 \\ j \not=i}}^\ellλ_{ij}β_{ij}|u_j|^{α_{ij}}|u_i|^{β_{ij} -2}u_i,\\ u_i \in H^1_0(Ω), \quad u_i\neq 0, \qquad i=1,\ldots,\ell, \end{cases} \end{equation*} in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, with $N\geq 4$, $\varepsilon>0$, $μ_i>0$, $λ_{ij}=λ_{ji}<0$, $α_{ij}, β_{ij}>1$, $α_{ij}=β_{ji}$, $α_{ij} + β_{ij} = p\in (2,2^*)$, and $2…
In this article, we study the existence and multiplicity of non-negative solutions of following $p$-fractional equation: $$ \quad \left\{\begin{array}{lr}\ds \quad - 2\int_{\mb R^n}\frac{|u(y)-u(x)|^{p-2}(u(y)-u(x))}{|x-y|^{n+p\al}} dxdy = \la h(x)|u|^{q-1}u+ b(x)|u|^{r-1} u \; \text{in}\; \Om \quad \quad \quad \quad u \geq 0 \; \mbox{in}\; \Om,\quad u\in W^{\al,p}(\mb R^n), \quad \quad\quad \quad\quad u =0\quad\quad \text{on} \quad \mb R^n\setminus \Om \end{array} \right. $$ where $\Om$ is a bounded domain in $\mb R^n$, $p\geq 2$, $n> p\al$, $\al\in(0,1)$, $0< q<p-1 <r < \frac{np}{n-ps}-1$, $…
Given $B_1(0)$ the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq 3$), we study smooth positive singular solutions $u\in C^2(B_1(0)\setminus \{0\})$ to $-Δu=\frac{u^{2^\star(s)-1}}{|x|^s}-μu^q$. Here $0< s<2$, $2^\star(s):=2(n-s)/(n-2)$ is critical for Sobolev embeddings, $q>1$ and $μ> 0$. When $μ=0$ and $s=0$, the profile at the singularity $0$ was fully described by Caffarelli-Gidas-Spruck. We prove that when $μ>0$ and $s>0$, besides this profile, two new profiles might occur. We provide a full description of all the singular profiles. Special attention is accorded to solutions such that $\liminf_{x\to…
We prove nonexistence of nontrivial, possibly sign changing, stable solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations with a potential on Riemannian manifolds, under suitable weighted volume growth conditions on geodesic balls.
In this paper, we study the multiplicity of positive solutions for the p-Laplacian systems with sign-changing weight functions. Using the decomposition of the Nehari manifold, we prove that an elliptic system has at least two positive solutions.
In this paper, we prove a maximum principle for the $p$-Laplacian with a sign-changing weight. As an application of this maximum principle, we study the existence of one-sign solutions for a class of quasilinear elliptic problems.
We prove the existence of one positive, one negative, and one sign-changing solution of a $p$-Laplacian equation on $\mathbb{R}^N$, with a $p$-superlinear subcritical term. Sign-changing solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations set on the whole of $\mathbb{R}^N$ have only been scarcely investigated in the literature. Our assumptions here are similar to those previously used by some authors in bounded domains, and our proof uses fairly elementary critical point theory, based on constraint minimization on the nodal Nehari set. The lack of compactness due to the unbounded domain is overcome by…
We consider the mixed local-nonlocal semi-linear elliptic equations driven by the superposition of Brownian and Lévy processes \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} - Δu + (-Δ)^s u = g(x,u) & \hbox{in $Ω$,} u=0 & \hbox{in $\mathbb{R}^n\backslashΩ$.} \\ \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} Under mild assumptions on the nonlinear term $g$, we show the $L^\infty$ boundedness of any weak solution (either not changing sign or sign-changing) by the Moser iteration method. Moreover, when $s\in (0, \frac{1}{2}]$, we obtain that the solution is unique and actually belongs to $C^{1,α}(\overlineΩ)$ …
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N \geq 2$, be a smooth bounded domain. We consider the boundary value problem \begin{equation} \label{Plambda-Abstract-ch3} \tag{$P_λ$} -Δu = c_λ(x) u + μ|\nabla u|^2 + h(x)\,, \quad u \in H_0^1(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω)\,, \end{equation} where $c_λ$ and $h$ belong to $L^q(Ω)$ for some $q > N/2$, $μ$ belongs to $\mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$ and we write $c_λ$ under the form $c_λ:= λc_{+} - c_{-}$ with $c_{+} \gneqq 0$, $c_{-} \geq 0$, $c_{+} c_{-} \equiv 0$ and $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. Here $c_λ$ and $h$ are both allowed to change sign. As a first main result we give a neces…
In this paper we study the existence of a least energy sign-changing solution to a nonlocal elliptic PDE involving singularity by using the Nehari manifold method, the constraint variational method and Brouwer degree theory.
We establish the existence of an entire solution for a class of stationary Schrödinger systems with subcritical discontinuous nonlinearities and lower bounded potentials that blow-up at infinity. The proof is based on the critical point theory in the sense of Clarke and we apply Chang's version of the Mountain Pass Lemma for locally Lipschitz functionals. Our result generalizes in a nonsmooth framework a result of Rabinowitz \cite{rabi} related to entire solutions of the Schrödinger equation.
We consider the problem -ε^2Δ_gu+u = |u|^{p-2}u in M, where (M,g) is a symmetric Riemannian manifold. We give a multiplicity result for antisymmetric changing sign solutions.
Given a symmetric Riemannian manifold (M, g), we show some results of genericity for non degenerate sign changing solutions of singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic problems with respect to the parameters: the positive number ε and the symmetric metric g. Using these results we obtain a lower bound on the number of non degenerate solutions which change sign exactly once.
The first two authors [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) {\bf 114}(1):1--34, 2017] classified the behaviour near zero for all positive solutions of the perturbed elliptic equation with a critical Hardy--Sobolev growth $$-Δu=|x|^{-s} u^{2^\star(s)-1} -μu^q \hbox{ in }B\setminus\{0\},$$ where $B$ denotes the open unit ball centred at $0$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\geq 3$, $s\in (0,2)$, $2^\star(s):=2(n-s)/(n-2)$, $μ>0$ and $q>1$. For $q\in (1,2^\star-1)$ with $2^\star=2n/(n-2)$, it was shown in the op. cit. that the positive solutions with a non-removable singularity at $0$ could exhibit up to three diff…
An existence and uniqueness result to evolution equations with sign-changing pseudo-differential operators and its applications to logarithmic Laplacian operators and second-order differential operators without ellipticity
In this paper we study the nonlinear elliptic problem involving p(x)-Laplacian with nonsmooth potential, where the weighted function may change sign. By using critical point theory for locally Lipschitz functionals due to Chang, we obtain conditions which ensure the existence of a solution for our problem.
We consider radial solutions of an elliptic equation involving the p-Laplace operator and prove by a shooting method the existence of compactly supported solutions with any prescribed number of nodes. The method is based on a change of variables in the phase plane corresponding to an asymptotic Hamiltonian system and provides qualitative properties of the solutions.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\R^n$, $n\ge 3$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$ and a small hole. We give the first example of sign-changing {\it bubbling} solutions to the nonlinear elliptic problem $$ -Δu=|u|^{{n+2\over n-2} +\ve -1 } u \, \, \mbox{ in } Ω, \quad \quad u=0 \mbox{ on } \partial Ω, $$ where $\ve$ is a small positive parameter. The basic cell in the construction is the sign-changing nodal solution to the critical Yamabe problem $$ -Δw = |w|^{\frac{4}{n-2}} w, \ \ w \in {\mathcal D}^{1,2} (\R^n) $$ which has large number ($3n$) of kernels.
Starting from a bound state (positive or sign-changing) solution to $$ -Δω_m =|ω_m|^{p-1} ω_m -ω_m \ \ \mbox{in}\ \R^n, \ ω_m \in H^2 (\R^n)$$ and solutions to the Helmholtz equation $$ Δu_0 + λu_0=0 \ \ \mbox{in} \ \R^n, \ λ>0, $$ we build new Dancer's type entire solutions to the nonlinear scalar equation $$ -Δu =|u|^{p-1} u-u \ \ \mbox{in} \ \R^{m+n}. $$
We study entire bounded solutions to the equation $Δu - u + u^3 = 0$ in $\mathbb R^2$. Our approach is purely variational and is based on concentration arguments and symmetry considerations. This method allows us to construct in a unified way several types of solutions with various symmetries (radial, breather type, rectangular, triangular, hexagonal, etc.), both positive and sign-changing. The method is also applicable for more general equations in any dimension.
In this paper we study entire radial solutions for the quasilinear $p$-Laplace equation $Δ_p u + k(x) f(u) = 0$ where $k$ is a radial positive weight and the nonlinearity behaves e.g. as $f(u)=u|u|^{q-2}-u|u|^{Q-2}$ with $q<Q$. In particular we focus our attention on solutions (positive and sign changing) which are infinitesimal at infinity, thus providing an extension of a previous result by Tang (2001).
We show that any general semilinear elliptic problem with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions in an annulus A in R^2m ;m >1, invariant by the action of a certain symmetry group can be reduced to a nonhomogenous similar problem in an annulus D in R^(m+1), invariant by another related symmetry. We apply this result to prove the existence of positive and sign changing solutions of a singularly perturbed elliptic problem in A which concentrate on one or two (m-1) dimensional spheres. We also prove that the Morse indices of these solutions tend to infinity as the parameter of concentration ten…
