This paper is concerned with a two dimensional Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. We prove that the associated Cauchy problem is well-posed for initial data of low regularity, with existence time of scale $\mathcal O(1/\sqrtε)$, where $ε>0$ is a shallowness parameter measuring the ratio of the amplitude of the wave to the mean depth of the fluid. The key ingredients in the proof are frequency loacalised dispersive and Strichartz estimates that depend on $ε$ as well as bilinear estimates in some Strichartz norms.
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. We are interested in well-posedness at a very low level of regularity. We derive dispersive and Strichartz estimates, and implement them together with a fixed point argument to solve the problem locally. Hamiltonian conservation guarantees global well-posedness for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
The initial-value problem for a particular bidirectional Whitham system modelling surface water waves is under consideration. This system was recently introduced in [4]. It is numerically shown to be stable and a good approximation to the incompressible Euler equations. Here we prove local in time well-posedness. Our proof relies on an energy method and a compactness argument.
In this note we study solitary wave solutions of a class of Whitham-Boussinesq systems which includes the bi-directional Whitham system as a special example. The travelling wave version of the evolution system can be reduced to a single evolution equation, similar to a class of equations studied by Ehrnström, Groves and Wahlén. In that paper the authors prove the existence of solitary wave solutions using a constrained minimization argument adapted to noncoercive functionals, developed by Buffoni, Groves and Wahlén, together with the concentration-compactness principle.
We are interested in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model with non-small contrast. We prove estimates between the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation and true solutions of the original system which guarantee that these amplitude equations make correct predictions about the dynamics of the spatially periodic Boussinesq model over the natural time scales of the amplitude equations. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis and energy estimates. The result is the first justification result of the KdV, the Burgers, an…
In this paper we prove the validity of a long wave Whitham approximation for a system consisting of a Boussinesq equation coupled with a Klein-Gordon equation. The proof is based on an infinite series of normal form transformations and an energy estimate. We expect that the concepts of this paper will be a part of a general approximation theory for Whitham's equations which are especially used in the description of slow modulations in time and space of periodic wave trains in general dispersive wave systems.
We analyze the spectral stability of small-amplitude, periodic, traveling-wave solutions of a Boussinesq-Whitham system. These solutions are shown numerically to exhibit high-frequency instabilities when subject to bounded perturbations on the real line. We use a formal perturbation method to estimate the asymptotic behavior of these instabilities in the small-amplitude regime. We compare these asymptotic results with direct numerical computations. This is the second paper in a series of three that investigates high-frequency instabilities of Stokes waves.
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. The system can be seen as a weak nonlocal dispersive perturbation of the shallow water system. The proof of well-posedness relies on energy estimates. However, due to the symmetry lack of the nonlinear part, in order to close the a priori estimates one has to modify the traditional energy norm in use. Hamiltonian conservation provides with global well-posedness at least for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
The travelling wave problem for a particular bidirectional Whitham system modelling surface water waves is under consideration. This system firstly appeared in [Dinvay, Dutykh, Kalisch 2018], where it was numerically shown to be stable and a good approximation to the incompressible Euler equations. In subsequent papers [Dinvay 2018], [Dinvay, Selberg, Tesfahun 2019] the initial-value problem was studied and well-posedness in classical Sobolev spaces was proved. Here we prove existence of solitary wave solutions and provide their asymptotic description. Our proof relies on a variational approac…
Consideration is given to three different full dispersion Boussinesq systems arising as asymptotic models in the bi-directional propagation of weakly nonlinear surface waves in shallow water. We prove that, under a non-cavitation condition on the initial data, these three systems are well-posed on a time scale of order $\mathcal{O}(\frac1\varepsilon)$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter measuring the weak non-linearity of the waves. This result seems new for one of these systems, even for short time. The two other systems involve surface tension, and for one of them, the non-cavitation c…
In this paper we prove a local well-posedness result for a class of quasi-linear systems of hyperbolic type involving Fourier multipliers. Among the physically relevant systems in this class is a family of Whitham-Boussinesq systems arising in the modeling free-surface water waves. Our result allows to prove the rigorous justification of these systems as approximations to the general water waves system on a relevant time scale, independent of the shallowness parameter.
We derive the Whitham equations from the water waves equations in the shallow water regime using two different methods, thus obtaining a direct and rigorous link between these two models. The first one is based on the construction of approximate Riemann invariants for a Whitham-Boussinesq system and is adapted to unidirectional waves. The second one is based on a generalisation of Birkhoff's normal form algorithm for almost smooth Hamiltonians and is adapted to bidirectional propagation. In both cases we clarify the improved accuracy on the fully dispersive Whitham model with respect to the lo…
We consider the generalized Fornberg-Whitham equation. We study sufficient conditions for blow-up of solutions and show the global existence with small initial data. Also we give some relations to the Burgers equation.
In this article we study two classical linear water wave problems, i) normal modes of infinite straight channels of bounded constant cross-section, and ii) trapped longitudinal modes in domains with unbounded constant cross-section. Both problems can be stated using linearized free surface potential flow theory, and our goal is to compare known analytic solutions in the literature to numerical solutions obtained using an ad-hoc but simple approximation of the non-local Dirichlet-Neumann operator for linear waves proposed in [vargas2016whitham]. To study normal modes in channels with bounded cr…
In this paper, we consider the Fornberg-Whitham equation and a family of solitary wave solutions is found by using minimization principle, where a related penalization function and the concentration-compactness lemma play a key role in our proof. Besides, we also prove that the family of solitary solutions is orbital stable and decay exponentially when speed wave c is bigger than 1.
We show that Whitham type equations u_t + u u_x -L u_x = 0, where L is a general Fourier multiplier operator of order α\in [-1,1], α\neq 0, allow for small solutions to be extended beyond their expected existence time. The result is valid for a range of quadratic dispersive equations with inhomogeneous symbols in the dispersive range given by α, and should be extendable to other equations of the same relative dispersive strength.
The multiphase Whitham modulation equations with $N$ phases have $2N$ characteristics which may be of hyperbolic or elliptic type. In this paper a nonlinear theory is developed for coalescence, where two characteristics change from hyperbolic to elliptic via collision. Firstly, a linear theory develops the structure of colliding characteristics involving the topological sign of characteristics and multiple Jordan chains, and secondly a nonlinear modulation theory is developed for transitions. The nonlinear theory shows that coalescing characteristics morph the Whitham equations into an asympto…
We prove the existence of a periodic traveling wave of extreme form of the Whitham equation that has a convex profile between consecutive stagnation points, at which it is known to feature a cusp of exactly $C^{1/2}$ regularity. The convexity of Whitham's highest cusped wave had been conjectured by Ehrnström and Wahlén.
We analyze the weak solution concept for the Fornberg-Whitham equation in case of traveling waves with a piecewise smooth profile function. The existence of discontinuous weak traveling wave solutions is shown by means of analysis of a corresponding planar dynamical system and appropriate patching of disconnected orbits.
We establish the long time existence of solutions for the "Boussinesq-Full Dispersion" systems modeling the propagation of internal waves in a two-layer system. For the two-dimensional Hamiltonian case we prove the global existence of small solutions of the corresponding systems.
We show the existence of an inertial manifold (i.e. a globally invariant, exponentially attracting, finite-dimensional manifold) for the approximate deconvolution model of the 2D mean Boussinesq equations. This model is obtained by means of the Van Cittern approximate deconvolution operators, which is applied to the 2D filtered Boussinesq equations.
In this paper, the two-component Fornberg-Whitham system is studied. We firstly investigate the well-posedness in classical Sobolev Space and show a blow-up scenario by local-in-time a priori estimates, then we present some sufficient conditions on the initial data to lead to wave breaking. Furthermore, we establish analytically the existence of periodic travelling waves.
This paper is concerned with the one-dimensional version of a specific member of the (abcd) family of Boussinesq systems having the higher possible dispersion. We will establish two different long time existence results for the solutions of the Cauchy problem. The proofs involve normal form transformations suitably modified away from the zero set of the phases.
In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to BBM-type Boussinesq systems of equations which are asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface water waves. As opposed to previous papers devoted to the long time existence issue, we consider initial data with nontrivial behaviour at innity which may be used to model bore propagation.
In this paper, we consider the stochastic Boussinesq equations on $\mathbb T^3$ with transport noise and rough initial data. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of the local pathwise solution with initial data in $L^p(Ω;L^p)$ for $p>5$. By assuming additional smallness on the initial data and the noise, we establish the global existence of the pathwise solution.
We prove a long time existence result for the solutions of a two-dimensional Boussinesq system modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. This system is exceptional in the sense that it is the only linearly well-posed system in the (abcd) family of Boussinesq systems whose eigenvalues of the linearized system have nontrivial zeroes. This new difficulty is solved by the use of "good unknowns " and of normal form techniques.
It is proved that modulation in time and space of periodic wave trains, of the defocussing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, can be approximated by solutions of the Whitham modulation equations, in the hyperbolic case, on a natural time scale. The error estimates are based on existence, uniqueness, and energy arguments, in Sobolev spaces on the real line. An essential part of the proof is the inclusion of higher-order corrections to Whitham theory, and concomitant higher-order energy estimates.
We prove that the modulational instability criterion of the formal Whitham modulation theory agrees with the spectral stability of long wavelength perturbations of periodic travelling wave solutions to the generalized Whitham equation. We use the standard WKB procedure to derive a quasi-linear system of three Whitham modulation equations, written in terms of the mass, momentum, and wave number of a periodic travelling wave solution. We use the same quantities as parameters in a rigorous spectral perturbation of the linearized operator, which allows us to track the bifurcation of the zero eigen…
We consider the initial value problem for the inviscid Primitive and Boussinesq equations in three spatial dimensions. We recast both systems as an abstract Euler-type system and apply the methods of convex integration of De Lellis and Székelyhidi to show the existence of infinitely many global weak solutions of the studied equations for general initial data. We also introduce an appropriate notion of dissipative solutions and show the existence of suitable initial data which generate infinitely many dissipative solutions.
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the generalized Boussinesq equation with initial data in modulation spaces $M^{s}_{p^\prime,q}(\mathbb{R}^n),$ $n\geq 1.$ After a decomposition of the Boussinesq equation in a $2\times 2$-nonlinear system, we obtain the existence of global and local solutions in several classes of functions with values in $ M^s_{p,q}\times D^{-1}JM^s_{p,q}$ spaces for suitable $p,q$ and $s,$ including the special case $p=2,q=1$ and $s=0.$ Finally, we prove some results of scattering and asymptotic stability in the framework of modulation spaces.
In this paper, we prove well-posedness of the Fornberg-Whitham equation in Besov spaces $B_{2,r}^s$ in both the periodic and non-periodic cases. This will imply the existence and uniqueness of solutions in the aforementioned spaces along with the continuity of the data-to-solution map provided that the initial data belongs to $B_{2,r}^s $. We also establish sharpness of continuity on the data-to-solution map by showing that it is not uniformly continuous from any bounded subset of $B_{2,r}^s$ to $C([-T,T]; B^s_{2,r})$. Furthermore, we prove a Cauchy-Kowalevski type theorem for this equation th…
Using a nonlocal version of the center manifold theorem and a normal form reduction, we prove the existence of small-amplitude generalized solitary-wave solutions and modulated solitary-wave solutions to the steady gravity-capillary Whitham equation with weak surface tension. Through the application of the center manifold theorem, the nonlocal equation for the solitary wave profiles is reduced to a four-dimensional system of ODEs inheriting reversibility. Along particular parameter curves, relating directly to the classical gravity-capillary water wave problem, the associated linear operator i…

We consider several different bidirectional Whitham equations that have recently appeared in the literature. Each of these models combine the full two-way dispersion relation from the incompressible Euler equations with a canonical shallow water nonlinearity, providing nonlocal model equations that may be expected to exhibit some of the interesting high-frequency phenomena present in the Euler equations that standard "long-wave" theories fail to capture. Of particular interest here is the existence and stability of periodic traveling wave solutions in such models. Using numerical bifurcation t…
We study a Boussinesq system in a bounded domain with an outlet boundary portion where fluid can leave or re-enter. On this boundary part, we consider a do-nothing condition for the fluid flow, and a new artificial condition for the heat transfer that couples nonlinearly the fluid velocity and temperature. The latter can be further adjusted if convective or conductive phenomena are dominant. We prove existence and, in some cases, uniqueness of weak solutions to stationary and evolutionary problems by a fixed point strategy under suitable assumptions on the data. A variety of numerical tests sh…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong pathwise solutions to the stochastic Boussinesq equations with partial diffusion term forced by multiplicative noise on the torus in $\mathbb{R}^{d},d=2,3$. The solution is strong in both PDE and probabilistic sense. In the two dimensional case, we prove the global existence of strong solutions to the Boussinesq equations forced by additive noise using a suitable stochastic analogue of a logarithmic Gronwall's lemma. After the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are established, the large deviation principle (LDP) is prov…
We show the existence of finite kinetic energy solution with prescribed kinetic energy to the 2d Boussinesq equations with diffusive temperature on torus.
