A deep understanding of defects is essential for the optimisation of materials for solar energy conversion. This is particularly true for metal oxide photo(electro)catalysts, which typically feature high concentrations of charged point defects that are electronically active. In photovoltaic materials, except for selected dopants, defects are considered detrimental and should be eliminated to minimise charge recombination. However, photocatalysis is a more complex process where defects can play an active role, for example, by stabilising charge separation and mediating rate-limiting catalytic steps. Here, we review the behaviour of electronic defects in metal oxides, paying special attention to the principles underpinning the formation and function of trapped charges in the form of polarons. We focus on how defects alter the electronic structure, statically or transiently upon illumination, and discuss the implications of such changes in light-driven catalytic reactions. Finally, we consider the applicability of lessons learned from oxide defect chemistry to new photocatalysts based on carbon nitrides, polymers and metal halide perovskites.

Environmental contamination and human exposure to dyes have dramatically increased over the past decades because of their increasing use in such industries as textiles, paper, plastics, tannery and paints. These dyes can cause deterioration in water quality by imparting color to the water and inducing the photosynthetic activity of aquatic organisms by hindering light penetration. Moreover, some of the dyes are considered carcinogenic and mutagenic for human health. Therefore, efficient treatment and removal of dyes from wastewater have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Photoca…
Visible-light photocatalyst titanium dioxide (TiO2) was successfully prepared via a novel and facile single-mode microwave assisted synthesis process. In this one-step synthesis, Ti as target material selectively oxides in magnetic field throughout rapid heating, whose process requires less energy consumption and short time. In obtained TiO2, self-doping of Ti3+ was confirmed, which makes TiO2 performed sufficient light absorption in visible region with wavelength above 400 nm. Such Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 exhibits much narrower optical bandgap (2.14 eV) to compare with stoichiometric TiO2 (3.0-3…
The heptazine-based polymer melon (also known as graphitic carbon nitride, g-C3N4), is a promising photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. Nonetheless, attempts to improve its inherently low activity are rarely based on rational approaches due to a lack of fundamental understanding of its mechanistic operation. Here, we employ molecular heptazine-based model catalysts to identify the cyanamide moiety as a photocatalytically relevant "defect". We exploit this knowledge for the rational design of a carbon nitride polymer populated with cyanamide groups, yielding a material with 12- and 16-times th…

The proceeding discussion focuses on the Heyrovsky-type reactions for both the associative and dissociative reaction pathway related to nitrogen reduction. Key fundamental insight in the reduction mechanism is discussed that relates the material properties of the substitutional ions to the nitrogen and hydrogen …
Excessive CO2 emission from fossil fuel usage has resulted in global warming and environmental crises. To solve this problem, the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO or useful components is a new strategy that has received significant attention. The main challenge in this regard is exploring photocatalysts with high efficiency for CO2 photoreduction. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) through the high-pressure torsion (HPT) process has been effectively used in recent years to develop novel active catalysts for CO2 conversion. These active photocatalysts have been designed based on four main s…
We study the surface stability of the layered bismuth-oxide Bi$_2$WO$_6$ and Bi$_2$MoO$_6$ photocatalysts, which belong to the series of Aurivillius (Bi$_2$A$_{n-1}$B$_{n}$O$_{3n+3}$) perovskites and have been proposed as efficient visible-light absorbers, due to favorable electronic hybridization induced by the Bi 6s and 6p orbitals. We present a Newton--Raphson optimization of the charge distribution at the semiconductor--solution interface using the self-consistent continuum solvation (SCCS) model to describe the influence of the aqueous environment. Our analysis provides a description of t…
The problem of detecting the ability of some metal oxides as photocatalysts is receiving considerable attention in the world. The characteristic formulation of Copper doped zinc oxide is implemented to obtain an improved adsorption kinetics and photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide photocatalyst capable of evolving estimated photoluminescence (PL) spectra of zinc oxide nanoparticles to explore the effect of Copp…
Based on first principles density functional theory calculations we explore the energetics of the conversion of carbon mono and dioxide to methane over graphene oxide surfaces. Similar to the recently discovered hydration of various organic species over this catalyst, the transfer of hydrogen atoms from hydroxyl groups of graphene oxide provide a step by step transformation hydrogenation of carbon oxides. Estimated yields of modeled reactions at room temperature are about 0.01% for the carbon mono and dioxide. For the modeling of graphene oxide/metal oxide composites, calculations in the prese…
The nitrogen substitution into the oxygen sites of several oxide materials leads to a reduction of the band gap to the visible light energy range, which makes these oxynitride semiconductors potential photocatalysts for efficient solar water splitting. Oxynitrides typically show a different crystal structure compare to the pristine oxide material. Since the band gap is correlated to both the chemical composition and the crystal structure, it is not trivial to distinguish what modifications of the electronic structure induced by the nitrogen substitution are related to compositional and/or stru…
The step-by-step hydrogen-terminated (SSHT) model is proposed as a model for the surfaces of metal oxides. Using this model, it is found that the vibronic coupling density (VCD) can be employed as a reactivity index for surface reactions. As an example, the regioselectivity of CO$_2$ adsorption on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ photocatalyst surface is investigated based on VCD analysis. The cluster model constructed by the SSHT approach reasonably reflects the electronic structures of the Ga$_2$O$_3$ surface. The geometry of CO$_2$ adsorbed on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ cluster has a bent structure…

Nanostructured metal oxides, such as Cu2O, CeO2, α-Fe2O3, and TiO2 can efficiently mediate photocatalysis for solar-to-chemical energy conversion and pollution remediation. In this contribution, we report a novel approach, dielectric Mie resonance-enhanced photocatalysis, to enhance the catalytic activity of metal oxide photocatalysts. Specifically, we demonstrate that Cu2O nanostructures exhibiting dielectric Mie resonances can exhibit up to an order of magnitude higher photocatalytic rate as compared to Cu2O nanostructures not exhibiting dielectric Mie resonances. Our finite-difference time-…
Defect engineering using self-doping or creating vacancies in polycrystalline oxide based materials has profound influence on optical absorption, UV photo detection, and electrical switching. However, defects induced semiconducting oxide devices show enhancement in photo detection and photosensitivity, and hence still remain interesting in the field of optoelectronics. In this study, defect engineering in semiconducting oxide materials is discussed along with their roles in optoelectronic device-based applications. Theoretical investigations have been done for identifying defect states by perf…
We use \textit{ab initio} calculations to estimate formation energies of cation (transition metal) antisite defects at oxide interfaces and to understand the basic physical effects that drive or suppress the formation of these defects. Antisite defects are found to be favored in systems with substantial charge transfer across the interface, while Jahn-Teller distortions and itinerant ferromagnetism can prevent antisite defects and help stabilize atomically sharp interfaces. Our results enable identification of classes of systems that may be more and less susceptible to the formation of antisit…
Ordering of mobile defects in functional materials can give rise to fundamentally new phases possessing ferroic and multiferroic functionalities. Here we develop the Landau theory for strain induced ordering of defects (e.g. oxygen vacancies) in thin oxide films, considering both the ordering and wavelength of possible instabilities. Using derived analytical expressions for the energies of various defect-ordered states, we calculated and analyzed phase diagrams dependence on the film-substrate mismatch strain, concentration of defects, and Vegard coefficients. Obtained results open possibiliti…
A thin oxide layer protects metals from electrochemical corrosion and hence the stability of this oxide layer is crucial for corrosion resistance of metals. The dynamics of cationic and anionic point defects which are injected into this oxide layer at the metal-oxide-layer interface and the oxide-layer-environment interface during electrochemical processes determine the stability of this oxide-layer. The point defect model originally advanced by Digby Macdonald and perfected into a correct and complete theory by Bosco Emmanuel provides a concrete basis for investigating this stability question…
The dielectric breakdown at metal-oxide interfaces is a critical electronic device failure mechanism. Electronic tunneling through dielectric layers is a well-accepted explanation for this phenomenon. Theoretical band alignment studies, providing information about tunneling, have already been conducted in the literature for metal-oxide interfaces. However, most of the time materials were assumed defect free. Oxygen vacancies being very common in oxides, their effect on band lineup is of prime importance in understanding electron tunneling in realistic materials and devices. This work explores …
Porous metal oxides with nano-sized features attracted intensive interest in recent decades due to their high surface area which is essential for many applications, e.g. Li ion batteries, photocatalysts, fuel cells and dye-sensitized solar cells. Various approaches were so far investigated to synthesize porous nanostructured metal oxides, including self-assembly and template-assisted synthesis. For the latter approach, forests of carbon nanotubes are considered as particularly promising templates, with respect to their one dimensional nature and the resulting high surface area. In this work, w…
Vacancy defects in thin film laser ablated SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 were identified using variable energy positron annihilation lifetime measurements. Strontium vacancy related defects were the dominant positron traps and, apart from in the top ~ 50 nm, were found to be uniformly distributed. The surface layer showed an increase in annihilation from larger open-volume defects, large vacancy clusters or nanovoids.
The various decay mechanisms of excitons in cuprous oxide (Cu2O) are highly sensitive to defects which can relax selection rules. Here we report cryogenic hyperspectral imaging of exciton luminescence from cuprous oxide crystals grown via the floating zone method showing the samples have few defects. Some locations, however, show strain splitting of the 1s orthoexciton triplet polariton luminescence. Strain is reduced by annealing. In addition, annealing causes annihilation of oxygen and copper vacancies, which leads to a negative correlation between luminescence of unlike vacancies.
Stability of oxygen point defects in Ruddlesden-Popper oxides (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$)$_{2}$MO$_{4{\pm}δ}$ (M = Co, Ni, Cu) is studied with density functional theory calculations to determine their stable sites, charge states, and energetics as functions of Sr content ($x$), transition metal (M) and defect concentration (δ). We demonstrate that the dominant O point defects can change between oxide interstitials, peroxide interstitials, and vacancies. Generally, increasing $x$ and atomic number of M stabilizes peroxide over oxide interstitials, as well as vacancies over both peroxide and oxide inte…
The structure of the ultimately-thin crystalline allotrope of silicon oxide, prepared onto a ruthenium surface, is unveiled down to atomic scale with chemical sensitivity, thanks to high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and first principle calculations. An ordered oxygen lattice is imaged which coexists with the two-dimensional monolayer oxide. This coexistence signals a displacive transformation from an oxygen reconstructed-Ru(0001) to silicon oxide, along which latterally-shifted domains form, each with equivalent and degenerate epitaxial relationships with the substrate. The unavoid…
The discovery of conducting two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and magnetism at the interface between insulating nonmagnetic oxides, as exemplified by the polar LaAlO3 and nonpolar SrTiO3 has raised prospects for attaining interfacial functionalities absent in the component materials. Yet, the microscopic origin of such emergent phenomena remains unclear, posing obstacles to design of improved functionalities. Using first principles defect calculations, we reveal a unifying polarity-induced defect mechanism for both conductivity and magnetism at polar-nonpolar interfaces of nonmagnetic insula…
We use first-principles calculations to investigate the interplay between strain and the charge state of point defect impurities in complex oxides. Our work is motivated by recent interest in using defects as active elements to provide novel functionality in coherent epitaxial films. Using oxygen vacancies as model point defects, and CaMnO$_3$ and MnO as model materials, we calculate the changes in internal strain caused by changing the charge state of the vacancies, and conversely the effect of strain on charge-state stability. Our results show that the charge state is a degree of freedom tha…
The properties of many intrinsic defects in the wide band gap semiconductor LaAlO3 are studied using the screened hybrid functional of Heyd, Scuseria, and Ernzerhof (HSE). As in pristine structures, exact exchange included in the screened hybrid functional alleviates the band gap underestimation problem, which is common to semilocal functionals; this allows accurate prediction of defect properties. We propose correction-free defect energy levels for bulk LaAlO3 computed using HSE that might serve as guide in the interpretation of photoluminescence experiments.
Nickel oxide is a versatile p-type semiconducting oxide with many applications in opto-electronic devices, but high doping concentrations are often required to achieve necessary electrical conductivity. In contrast to many other transparent oxide semiconductors, even moderate levels of doping of NiO can lead to significant optical absorption in the visible spectral range, limiting the application range of the material. This correlation has been reported extensively in literature, but its origin has been unknown until now. This work combines experimental data on optical properties from a variet…
We investigate the behavior of oxygen vacancies in three different metal-oxide semiconductors (rutile and anatase TiO2, monoclinic WO3, and tetragonal ZrO2) using a recently proposed hybrid density-functional method in which the fraction of exact exchange is material-dependent but obtained ab initio in a self-consistent scheme. In particular, we calculate charge-transition levels relative to the oxygen-vacancy defect and compare computed optical and thermal excitation/emission energies with the available experimental results, shedding light on the underlying excitation mechanisms and related m…
Oxygen defects govern the behavior of a range of materials spanning catalysis, quantum computing, and nuclear energy. Understanding and controlling these defects is particularly important for the safe use, storage, and disposal of actinide oxides in the nuclear fuel cycle, since their oxidation state influences fuel lifetimes, stability, and the contamination of groundwater. However, poorly understood nanoscale fluctuations in these systems can lead to significant deviations from bulk oxidation behavior. Here we describe the first use of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron micr…

We report a comprehensive first-principles study of the thermodynamics and transport of intrinsic point defects in layered oxide cathode materials LiMO$_2$ (M=Co, Ni), using density-functional theory and the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof screened hybrid functional. We find that LiCoO$_2$ has a complex defect chemistry; different electronic and ionic defects can exist under different synthesis conditions, and LiCoO$_2$ samples free of cobalt antisite defects can be made under Li-excess (Co-deficient) environments. A defect model for lithium over-stoichiometric LiCoO$_2$ is also proposed, which involv…

Through DFT calculations of structures enumerated by lattice-algebra techniques, we identify the lowest-energy patterns for defect clustering for four separate dopant concentrations. The most stable structures are characterized by a repulsive interaction between nearest-neighbor vacancies on the oxygen sublattice. The enthalpies of formation with respect to constituent oxides are pos…

Defect electrons (holes) play an important role in most technologically important complex oxides; many of which possess perovskite-related structures. In this contribution we present the first detailed characterization of localized hole states in such materials. Our investigations employ advanced embedded-cluster calculations which consistently include electron correlations and defect-induced lattice relaxations. This is necessary in order to account for the variety of possible hole-state manifestations.
The manufacture of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) involves fabrication of a multilayer ceramic structure, for which constrained sintering is a key processing step in many cases. Defects are often observed in the sintered structure, but their formation during sintering is not well understood. In this work, various ceramic films were fabricated by screen printing and a variety of defects observed. Some films showed mud-cracking defects, whereas others presented distributed large pores. Mud cracking defects were found to originate from a network of fine cracks present in the green film and formed…
Possibilities of turning intrinsically n-type oxide semiconductors like ZnO and Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O into p-type materials are investigated. Motivated by recent experiments on Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O doped with nitrogen we analyze the electronic defect levels of point defects N$_{\rm O}$, v$_{\rm Zn}$, and N$_{\rm O}$-v$_{\rm Zn}$ pairs in ZnO and Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O by means of self-interaction-corrected density functional theory calculations. We show how the interplay of defects can lead to shallow acceptor defect levels, although the levels of individual point defects N$_{\rm O}$ are too deep in the b…
In the field of atomically thin 2D materials, oxides are relatively unexplored in spite of the large number of layered oxide structures amenable to exfoliation. There is an increasing interest in ultra-thin film oxide nanostructures from applied points of view. Polar discontinuities and structural changes at oxide interfaces can give rise to a large variety of electronic and ionic phenomena. Related effects have been intensively studied in epitaxial systems, including ferroelectric domain walls and interfaces in superlattices. Here, we investigate the relation between polar discontinuities and the local chemistry at grain boundaries in polycrystalline ferroelectric ErMnO3. Using orientation mapping and different scanning probe microscopy techniques, we demonstrate that the polycrystalline material develops charged grain boundaries with enhanced elect…
We demonstrate a thermodynamic formulation to quantify defect formation energetics in an insulator under high electric field. As a model system, we analyzed neutral oxygen vacancies (color centers) in alkaline-earth-metal binary oxides using density functional theory, Berry phase calculations, and maximally localized Wannier functions. Work of polarization lowers the field dependent electric Gibbs energy of formation of this defect. This is attributed mainly to the ease of polarizing the two electrons trapped in the vacant site, and secondarily to the defect induced reduction in bond stiffness…
The investigation of the defect chemistry of solid oxides is of central importance for the understanding of redox processes. This can be performed by measuring conductivity as a function of the oxygen partial pressure, which is conventionally established by using buffer gas mixtures or oxygen pumps based on zirconia. However, this approach has some limitations, such as difficulty regulating oxygen partial pressure in some intermediate-pressure regions or the possibility of influencing the redox process by gases that can also be incorporated into the oxide or react with the surface via heteroge…
At the atomic scale, uranium-plutonium mixed oxides (U,Pu)O_2 are characterized by cationic chemical disorder, which entails that U and Pu cations are randomly distributed on the cation sublattice. In the present work, we study the impact of disorder on point-defect formation energies in (U,Pu)O_2 using interatomic-potential and Density Functional Theory (DFT+U) calculations. We focus on bound Schottky defects (BSD) that are among the most stable defects in these oxides. As a first step, we estimate the distance R_D around the BSD up to which the local chemical environment significantly affect…
Electron- and hole-doped La$_2$CoMnO$_6$(LCMO) are investigated using first principles DFT calculations. Hole and electron doping are achieved respectively by introducing Sr$^{2+}$ at La$^{3+}$ sites and by inducing O-site vacancies in LCMO. Electronic structure calculations suggest that hole doping alters the charge and valence state of Co ions, whereas electron doping influences the Mn ions. Introduction of defects is found to enhance antisite disorder(ASD) at Co/Mn site, which is expected to influence the magnetodielectric properties of the system. Our calculations suggest that while ASD an…
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are carried out to study the structure and electronic structure of amorphous zinc oxide (a-ZnO). The models were prepared by the "melt-quench" method. The models are chemically ordered with some coordination defects. The effect of trivalent dopants in the structure and electronic properties of a-ZnO is investigated. Models of a-X_0.375 Z_0.625 O (X=Al, Ga and In) were also prepared by the "melt- quench" method. The trivalent dopants reduce the four-fold Zn and O, thereby introducing some coordination defects in the network. The dopants prefer to bon…
