Oxides containing metals or metalloids from the {\it p}-block of the periodic table ({\it e.g.}, In, Sn, Sb, Pb, Bi) are of technological interest as transparent conductors and light absorbers for solar energy conversion due to the tunability of their electronic conductivity and optical absorption. Comparatively, these oxides have found limited applications in hydrogen photoelectrolysis primarily due to their high electronegativity, which impedes electron transfer for reducing protons into hydrogen. We have shown recently that inserting {\it s}-block cations into {\it p}-block metal oxides is effective at lowering electronegativities while affording further control of band gaps. Here, we explain the origins of this dual tunability by demonstrating the mediator role of {\it s}-block cations in modulating orbital hybridization while not contributing to frontier electronic states. From this result, we carry out a comprehensive computational study of 109 ternary oxides of {\it s}- and {\it p}-block metal elements as candidate photocatalysts for solar hydrogen generation. We downselect the most desirable materials using band gaps and band edges obtained from Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory with Hubbard parameters computed entirely from first principles, evaluate the stability of these oxides in aqueous conditions, and characterize experimentally four of the remaining materials, synthesized with high phase uniformity, to validate and further develop the computational models. We thus propose nine oxide semiconductors, including CsIn$_3$O$_5$, Sr$_2$In$_2$O$_5$, and KSbO$_2$ which, to the extent of our literature review, have not been previously considered as water-splitting photocatalysts.
In the present work we use TiO2 nanotube arrays, carrying a Pt coating that is optimally dewetted, as a photocatalyst to generate H2. In order to achieve a maximum H2-generation efficiency, on the one hand an ideal thermal dewetting of the Pt layer into nanoparticles is needed that requires an oxygen free heat treatment, and on the other hand an optimal crystallization of the TiO2 nanotubes into anatase with reduced defect density is achieved only by annealing in O2 containing environment. To overcome this issue, we combine adequate reducing and oxidizing conditions in a multiple annealing tre…
Metal oxides have been extensively investigated and applied in environmental remediation and protection, energy conversion and storage. Most of these diverse applications are results of a large diversity of the electronic states of metal oxides. Noticeably, however, numerous metal oxides have obstacles for applications in catalysis because of low density of active sites in these materials. Size reduction of oxide catalyst is a strategy to improve the active site density. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of single atomic metal oxide in which the oxide size reaches its minimum. However, the …
High-entropy oxides (HEOs), as multi-component ceramics with high configurational entropy, have been of recent interest due to their attractive properties including photocatalytic activity for H2 production and CO2 conversion. However, the photocatalytic activity of HEOs is still limited to ultraviolet light. In this study, to achieve visible-light-driven photocatalysis, 10 different heterojunctions were simultaneously introduced in the Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta-W-O system. The oxide, which was synthesized by a high-pressure torsion method and oxidation, successfully produced oxygen from water under visible…
In the present work, extended Argon ion bombardment was used to modify anatase TiO2 nanotube (NTs) layers. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a high content of sub-oxide formed (Ti3+, Ti2+ states) in the nanotube layers. These samples were tested for their ability to show open-circuit photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. We found for UV (cw laser 325nm) illumination as well as for AM1.5 conditions, a strongly enhanced H2 evolution activity in absence of the usual noble metal-nanoparticle decoration. We conclude therefore that these sub-oxide states can play an important role in th…
The problem of detecting the ability of some metal oxides as photocatalysts is receiving considerable attention in the world. The studied zinc oxide is considered as one of the most utilized semiconductors, due to its direct band gap of 3.37 eV and a large exciton binding energy of 60 meV at room temperature. The characteristic formulation of Copper doped zinc oxide is implemented to obtain an improved adsorption kinetics and photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide photocatalyst capable of evolving estimated photoluminescence (PL) spectra of zinc oxide nanoparticles to explore the effect of Copp…
We introduce an approach to calculate the thermodynamic oxidation and reduction potentials of semiconductors in aqueous solution. By combining a newly-developed ab initio calculation for compound formation energy and band alignment with electrochemistry experimental data, this approach can be used to predict the stability of almost any compound semiconductor in aqueous solution. 30 photocatalytic semiconductors have been studied, and a graph (a simplified Pourbaix diagram) showing their valence/conduction band levels and oxidation/reduction potentials is produced. Based on this graph, we have …
Photocatalytic materials are pivotal for the implementation of disruptive clean energy applications such as conversion of H$_{2}$O and CO$_{2}$ into fuels and chemicals driven by solar energy. However, efficient and cost-effective materials able to catalyze the chemical reactions of interest when exposed to visible light are scarce due to the stringent electronic conditions that they must satisfy. Chemical and nanostructuring approaches are capable of improving the catalytic performance of known photoactive compounds however the complexity of the synthesized nanomaterials and sophistication of…
Functionalization of photocatalytic metal oxide nanoparticles of TiO2, ZnO, WO3 and CuO with amine-terminated (oleylamine) and thiol-terminated (1-dodecanethiol) alkyl chained ligands was studied under ambient conditions. A high selectivity was observed in the binding specificity of a ligand towards nanoparticles of these different oxides. It was observed that oleylamine binds stably to only TiO2 and WO3, while 1-dodecanethiol binds stably only to ZnO and CuO. Similarly, polar to non-polar solvent phase transfer of TiO2 and WO3 nanoparticles could be achieved by using oleylamine, but not by 1-…
A comprehensive comparison between Bi$_{25}$FeO$_{40}$-reduced graphene oxide(rGO) nanocomposite and BiFeO$_{3}$-rGO nanocomposite has been performed to investigate their photocatalytic abilities in degradation of Rhodamine B dye and generation of hydrogen by water-splitting. The hydrothermal technique adapted for synthesis of the nanocomposites provides a versatile temperature-controlled phase selection between perovskite BiFeO$_{3}$ and sillenite Bi$_{25}$FeO$_{40}$. Both perovskite and sillenite structured nanocomposites are stable and exhibit considerably higher photocatalytic ability over…
The development of new high dielectric materials is essential for advancement in modern electronics. Oxides are generally regarded as the most promising class of high dielectric materials for industrial applications as they possess both high dielectric constants and large band gaps. Most previous researches on high dielectrics were limited to already known materials. In this study, we conducted an extensive search for high dielectrics over a set of ternary oxides by combining crystal structure prediction and density functional perturbation theory calculations. From this search, we adopted mult…
We use ab initio global structural prediction, and specifically the minima hopping method, to explore the periodic table in search of novel oxide phases. In total, we study 183 different compositions of the form MXO2, where M=(Cu, Ag, Au) and X is an element of the periodic table. This set includes the well-known Cu delafossite compounds that are, up to now, the best p-type transparent conductive oxides known to mankind. Our calculations discover 81 stable compositions, out of which only 36 are included in available databases. Some of these new phases are potentially good candidates for transp…
High-dielectric constant and wide band gap oxides have important technological applications. The crystalline oxide polymorphs having lattice constant compatibility to silicon are particularly desirable. One recently reported candidate is the inverse silver oxide phase of SiO$_2$. First-principles study of this system together with its isovalent equivalents GeO$_{2}$, SnO$_{2}$ as well as their ternary alloys are performed. Within the framework of density functional theory both generalized gradient approximation and local density approximation (LDA) are employed to obtain their structural prope…
High-entropy oxides (HEOs), as a new family of materials with five or more principal cations, have shown promising properties for various applications. In this work and inspired by inherent defective and strained structure of HEOs, photocatalytic CO2 conversion is examined on a dual-phase TiZrNbHfTaO11 synthesized by a two-step high-pressure torsion mechanical alloying and high-temperature oxidation. The HEO, which had various structural defects, showed simultaneous photocatalytic activity for CO2 to CO and H2O to H2 conversion without the addition of a co-catalyst. The photocatalytic activity…
Oxides with good p-type conductivity have been long sought after to achieve high performance all-oxide optoelectronic devices. Divalent Sn(II) based oxides are promising candidates because of their rather dispersive upper valence bands caused by the Sn-5s/O-2p anti-bonding hybridization. There are so far few known Sn(II) oxides being p-type conductive suitable for device applications. Here, we present via first-principles global optimization structure searches a material design study for a hitherto unexplored Sn(II)-based system, ternary alkaline-earth metal Sn(II) oxides in the stoichiometry …
Environmental contamination and human exposure to dyes have dramatically increased over the past decades because of their increasing use in such industries as textiles, paper, plastics, tannery and paints. These dyes can cause deterioration in water quality by imparting color to the water and inducing the photosynthetic activity of aquatic organisms by hindering light penetration. Moreover, some of the dyes are considered carcinogenic and mutagenic for human health. Therefore, efficient treatment and removal of dyes from wastewater have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Photoca…
In this paper, we report the synthesis of reduced Graphene Oxide-Tin Oxide nanocomposite and the effectiveness of this composite in decolorizing and degrading Methylene Blue (MB). Tin Oxide was prepared by liquid phase co-precipitation method and reduced Graphene Oxide-Tin Oxide (rGO-SnO2) nanocomposite was prepared by solution mixing method. Tin Oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been ardently investigated as photocatalyst for water purification and environment decontamination but the photon generated electron and hole pair (EHP) recombination is one of the limiting factors. Reduced Graphene Oxid…
A novel design has been proposed for a facile and rapid build-up of highly tailorable nanostructured multishells on metal oxide particles (graphene/TiOx@TiO2) under a dry inert atmosphere to maximize the visible-light photocatalytic performance. We also thoroughly and systematically investigated the as-prepared nanostructured particle surface and the mechanisms of the extraordinary in-situ graphene growth on the TiOx@TiO2 nanoparticles achieved by a rapid-concomitant reaction in the metal oxide (TiO2)/polymer (polymethyl methacrylate) interface under microwave irradiation. The as-prepared comp…
Nanostructured metal oxides, such as Cu2O, CeO2, α-Fe2O3, and TiO2 can efficiently mediate photocatalysis for solar-to-chemical energy conversion and pollution remediation. In this contribution, we report a novel approach, dielectric Mie resonance-enhanced photocatalysis, to enhance the catalytic activity of metal oxide photocatalysts. Specifically, we demonstrate that Cu2O nanostructures exhibiting dielectric Mie resonances can exhibit up to an order of magnitude higher photocatalytic rate as compared to Cu2O nanostructures not exhibiting dielectric Mie resonances. Our finite-difference time-…
As electricity grids become more renewable energy-compliant, there will be a need for novel semiconductors that can withstand high power, high voltage, and high temperatures. Wide band gap (WBG) semiconductors tend to exhibit large breakdown field, allowing high operating voltages. Currently explored WBG materials for power electronics are costly (GaN), difficult to synthesize as high-quality single crystals (SiC) and at scale (diamond, BN), have low thermal conductivity ($β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$), or cannot be suitably doped (AlN). We conduct a computational search for novel semiconductors across 1,34…
The identification of alternatives to the Lithium-ion battery architecture remains a crucial priority in the diversification of energy storage technologies. Accompanied by the low reduction potential of $\mathrm{Ca^{2+}/Ca}$, -2.87 V vs. SHE, metal-anode-based rechargeable Calcium (Ca) batteries appear competitive in terms of energy densities. However, the development of Ca-batteries lacks high-energy density intercalation cathode materials. Using first-principles methodologies, we screen a large chemical space for potential Ca-based cathode chemistries, with composition of $\mathrm{Ca_iTM_jZ_…
Excessive CO2 emission from fossil fuel usage has resulted in global warming and environmental crises. To solve this problem, the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO or useful components is a new strategy that has received significant attention. The main challenge in this regard is exploring photocatalysts with high efficiency for CO2 photoreduction. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) through the high-pressure torsion (HPT) process has been effectively used in recent years to develop novel active catalysts for CO2 conversion. These active photocatalysts have been designed based on four main s…
Noble metal cocatalysts are conventionally a crucial factor in oxide-semiconductor-based photocatalytic hydrogen generation. In the present work, we show that optimized high-temperature hydrogenation of commercially available strontium titanate (SrTiO3) powder can be used to engineer an intrinsic cocatalytic shell around nanoparticles that can create a photocatalyst that is highly effective without the use of any additional cocatalyst for hydrogen generation from neutral aqueous methanol solutions. This intrinsic activation effect can also be observed for SrTiO3[100] single crystal as well as …
Nitrogen-containing Surface Ligands Lead to False Positives for Photofixation of N$_2$ on Metal Oxide Nanocrystals: An Experimental and Theoretical Study
The step-by-step hydrogen-terminated (SSHT) model is proposed as a model for the surfaces of metal oxides. Using this model, it is found that the vibronic coupling density (VCD) can be employed as a reactivity index for surface reactions. As an example, the regioselectivity of CO$_2$ adsorption on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ photocatalyst surface is investigated based on VCD analysis. The cluster model constructed by the SSHT approach reasonably reflects the electronic structures of the Ga$_2$O$_3$ surface. The geometry of CO$_2$ adsorbed on the Ag-loaded Ga$_2$O$_3$ cluster has a bent structure…
Bismuth molybdate (BMO) is the simplest compound of aurivillius familywith a wide range of application as a tunable capacitor and sensor. The present article deals with the study of astructural, optical and catalytic property of tungsten doped Bismuth molybdate. The crystal structure is critically studied by Rietveld structural refinement method by using X-ray powder diffraction data. Raman scattering indicates that the structural distortion in BMO is mainly due to the rigid rotation of MoO6 octahedra. Due to the introduction of tungsten, the system experienced an increase in the band gap, whi…
Substrate material imperfections and surface losses are one of the major factors limiting superconducting quantum circuitry from reaching the scale and complexity required to build a practicable quantum computer. One potential path towards higher coherence of superconducting quantum devices is to explore new substrate materials with a reduced density of imperfections due to inherently different surface chemistries. Here, we examine two ternary metal oxide materials, spinel (MgAl2O4) and lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3), with a focus on surface and interface characterization and preparation. Device…
The production of hydrogen from water using only a catalyst and solar energy is one of the most challenging and promising outlets for the generation of clean and renewable energy. Semiconductor photocatalysts for solar hydrogen production by water photolysis must employ stable, non-toxic, abundant and inexpensive visible-light absorbers capable of harvesting light photons with adequate potential to reduce water. Here, we show that a-Fe2O3 can meet these requirements by means of using hydrothermally prepared nanorings. These iron oxide nanoring photocatalysts proved capable of producing hydroge…
The optimization of properties of perovskite oxides has drawn interest on account of their diverse areas of application. In this work, the hierarchical clustering technique is used to reduce the multi-collinearity among selected features from literature that are reported to have an effect on perovskite formation and stability. Operating on the vast composition space of double oxide perovskite compositions available in literature and online repositories, in this manuscript, an attempt has been made to extract the relationship between the composition and structure to predict their formability an…
Investigation of a high-entropy oxide photocatalyst for hydrogen generation by first-principles calculations coupled with experiments: Significance of electronegativity
Visible-light photocatalyst titanium dioxide (TiO2) was successfully prepared via a novel and facile single-mode microwave assisted synthesis process. In this one-step synthesis, Ti as target material selectively oxides in magnetic field throughout rapid heating, whose process requires less energy consumption and short time. In obtained TiO2, self-doping of Ti3+ was confirmed, which makes TiO2 performed sufficient light absorption in visible region with wavelength above 400 nm. Such Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 exhibits much narrower optical bandgap (2.14 eV) to compare with stoichiometric TiO2 (3.0-3…
Perovskite oxynitrides are a promising class of material for photocatalytic water-splitting due to their small band gaps and suitably aligned band edges. Recently, epitaxially strained oxynitrides started to attract interest due to the possibility to engineer the anion order and ferroelectric distortions. However, contrary to oxides there have been no studies on the band-gap evolution in oxynitrides with epitaxial strain. Here, we investigate, using density functional theory calculations, the influence of epitaxial strain on the band gap of two different oxynitrides and compare our results wit…
Defined substoichiometric titanium oxides (Ti$_x$O$_{2x-1}$ with $3 < x < 10$) called Magneli phases have been investigated mostly for their unusual high conductivity and metal-like behavior. In photocatalysis, Magneli phase containing titania particles have been reported to provide favorable charge separation resulting in enhanced reaction efficiency. In the current work we describe a one-step synthesis of Magneli-containing mixed phase nanoparticles that carry directly integrated minute amounts of Pt. Phase optimized nanoparticles that contain only a few hundred ppm Pt are very effective pho…
Semi-local DFT methods exhibit significant errors for the phase diagrams of transition-metal oxides that are caused by an incorrect description of molecular oxygen and the large self-interaction error in materials with strongly localized electronic orbitals. Empirical and semiempirical corrections based on the DFT+U method can reduce these errors, but the parameterization and validation of the correction terms remains an on-going challenge. We develop a systematic methodology to determine the parameters and to statistically assess the results by considering thermochemical data across a set of …
The electronic structure of crystalline CdTe, CdO, $α$-TeO$_2$, CdTeO$_3$ and Cd$_3$TeO$_6$ is studied by means of first principles calculations. The band structure, total and partial density of states, and charge densities are presented. For $α$-TeO$_2$ and CdTeO$_3$, Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation (LDA) correctly describes the insulating character of these compounds. In the first four compounds, LDA underestimates the optical bandgap by roughly 1 eV. Based on this trend, we predict an optical bandgap of 1.7 eV for Cd$_3$TeO$_6$. This material shows an isolat…
Improved thermomechanical properties have been reported for various high-entropy oxides containing typically five metal cations. This study further investigates a series of duodenary (11 metals + oxygen) high-entropy oxides by mixing different fractions of a five-cation fluorite-structured niobate and a seven-cation pyrochlore (both containing Yb) with matching lattice constants. Nine compositions of duodenary high-entropy oxides have been examined. All of them exhibit single high-entropy phases of either disordered fluorite or ordered pyrochlore structure. An order-disorder transition (ODT) i…
The shape-controlled synthesis of cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) photocatalysts with both low or high index crystal planes has received increasing attention due to their unique facet-dependent properties. Since they are cheap and earth abundant, these well-defined Cu$_2$O nanostructures are extensively used for different photocatalytic reactions, also because of their strong visible light absorption capability. However, further development will be still needed to enhance the efficiency and photostability of Cu$_2$O, which still limits its industrial application. We start this review by summarizing th…
