We use first-principles calculations to investigate the interplay between strain and the charge state of point defect impurities in complex oxides. Our work is motivated by recent interest in using defects as active elements to provide novel functionality in coherent epitaxial films. Using oxygen vacancies as model point defects, and CaMnO$_3$ and MnO as model materials, we calculate the changes in internal strain caused by changing the charge state of the vacancies, and conversely the effect of strain on charge-state stability. Our results show that the charge state is a degree of freedom that can be used to control the interaction of defects with strain and hence the concentration and location of defects in epitaxial films. We propose the use of field-effect gating to reversibly change the charge state of defects and hence the internal strain and corresponding strain-induced functionalities.
The alkaline earth binary oxides adopt a simple rocksalt structure and form an important family of compounds because of their large presence in the earth's mantle and their potential use in microelectronic devices. In comparison to the class of multifunctional ferroelectric perovskite oxides, however, their practical applications remain limited and the emergence of ferroelectricity and related functional properties in simple binary oxides seems so unlikely that it was never previously considered. Here, we show using first-principles density functional calculations that ferroelectricity can be …
A precisely selected elastic strain can be introduced in submicron-thick single-crystal SrTiO3 sheets using a silicon nitride stressor layer. A conformal stressor layer deposited using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition produces an elastic strain in the sheet consistent with the magnitude of the nitride residual stress. Synchrotron x-ray nanodiffraction reveals that the strain introduced in the SrTiO3 sheets is on the order of 10 4, matching the predictions of an elastic model. This approach to elastic strain sharing in complex oxides allows the strain to be selected within a wide and c…
Perovskite oxynitrides are a promising class of material for photocatalytic water-splitting due to their small band gaps and suitably aligned band edges. Recently, epitaxially strained oxynitrides started to attract interest due to the possibility to engineer the anion order and ferroelectric distortions. However, contrary to oxides there have been no studies on the band-gap evolution in oxynitrides with epitaxial strain. Here, we investigate, using density functional theory calculations, the influence of epitaxial strain on the band gap of two different oxynitrides and compare our results wit…

Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) oxides (A$_{n+1}$B$_n$O$_{3n+1}$) comprised of perovskite (ABO$_3$)$_n$ slabs can host a wider variety of structural distortions than their perovskite counterparts. This makes accurate structural determination of RP oxides more challenging. In this study, we investigate the structural phase diagram of $n=1$ RP Sr$_2$SnO$_4$, one of alkaline earth stannates that are promising for opto-electronic applications by using group theory-based symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations. We explore the symmetry breaking effects of different dynamical instabilities, predic…
2D-layered tin (II) oxide (SnO) has recently emerged as a promising bipolar channel material for thin-film transistors and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor devices. In this work, we present a first-principles investigation of the mechanical properties of ultrathin SnO, as well as the electronic implications of tensile strain ($ε$) under both uniaxial and biaxial conditions. Bulk-to-monolayer transition is found to significantly lower the Young's and shear moduli of SnO, highlighting the importance of interlayer Sn-Sn bonds in preserving structural integrity. Unprecedentedly, few-layer S…
Integration of functional oxides on silicon requires the use of complex heterostructures involving oxides of which the structure and properties strongly depend on the strain state and strain-mediated interface coupling. The experimental observation of strain-related effects of the individual components remains challenging. Here we report a Raman scattering investigation of complex multilayer BaTiO3/LaNiO3/CeO2/YSZ thin film structures on silicon. It is shown that the Raman signature of the multilayers differs significantly for three different laser wavelengths (633, 442 and 325 nm). Our result…
The discovery of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) in SrTiO3-based heterostructures provides new opportunities for nanoelectronics. Herein, we create a new type of oxide 2DEG by the epitaxial-strain-induced polarization at an otherwise nonpolar perovskite-type interface of CaZrO3/SrTiO3. Remarkably, this heterointerface is atomically sharp, and exhibits a high electron mobility exceeding 60,000 cm2V-1s-1 at low temperatures. The 2DEG carrier density exhibits a critical dependence on the film thickness, in good agreement with the polarization induced 2DEG scheme.
Antiferromagnetic thin films typically exhibit a multi-domain state, and control of the antiferromagnetic Néel vector is challenging as antiferromagnetic materials are robust to magnetic perturbations. By relying on anisotropic in-plane strain engineering of epitaxial thin films of the prototypical antiferromagnetic material LaFeO3, uniaxial Néel vector control is demonstrated. Orthorhombic (011)- and (101)-oriented DyScO3, GdScO3 and NdGaO3 substrates are used to engineer different anisotropic in-plane strain states. The anisotropic in-plane strain stabilises structurally monodomain monoclini…
Our first-principles results show that geometric frustration can be induced in thin films of multiferroic BiFeO3. We find that competing magnetic interactions occur in the so-called super-tetragonal phase of this material, which can be grown on strongly-compressive substrates. We show that the frustration level can be tuned by appropriately choosing the substrate; in fact, the three-dimensional spin order gets totally annihilated in a narrow range of epitaxial strains. We argue that the effects revealed here are not exclusive to BiFeO3, and predict that they also occur in multiferroic BiCoO3.
In-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to study the effect of lattice volume and strain on the proton conductivity of the yttrium-doped barium cerate proton conductor by applying the hydrostatic pressure up to 1.25 GPa. An increase from 0.62 eV to 0.73 eV in the activation energy of the bulk conductivity was found with increasing pressure during a unit cell volume change of 0.7%, confirming a previously suggested correlation between lattice volume and proton diffusivity in the crystal lattice. One strategy worth trying in the future development of the ceramic proton conductors…
By combining first-principles simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we demonstrate how the interplay of quantum confinement and epitaxial strain allows to selectively design $n$- and $p$-type thermoelectric response in (LaNiO$_3$)$_3$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_1(001)$ superlattices. In particular, varying strain from $-4.9$ to $+2.9\%$ tunes the Ni orbital polarization at the interfaces from $-6$ to $+3\%$. This is caused by an electron redistribution among Ni $3d_{x^2-y^2}$- and $3d_{z^2}$-derived quantum well states which respond differently to strain. Owing to thi…
Controlling magnetism by using electric fields is a goal of research towards novel spintronic devices and future nano-electronics. For this reason, multiferroic heterostructures attract much interest. Here we provide experimental evidence, and supporting DFT analysis, of a transition in La0.65Sr0.35MnO3 (LSMO) thin film to a stable ferromagnetic phase, that is induced by the structural and strain properties of the ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) substrate, which can be modified by applying external electric fields. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) measurements on Mn L edges with a synchrotr…
The sensitivity of materials properties, particularly those of perovskite oxides, to epitaxial strain has been exploited to great advantage to create materials with new or enhanced properties. Although it has certainly been recognized that mismatch in the thermal expansion coefficients of the bulk and substrate material will contribute to the misfit strain, the significance of this contribution for ferroelectric perovskite thin-films has not been systematically explored. We use first-principles density functional theory and the example of ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ thin-films on various substrate…
Sintered samples of a spinel oxide LiFeCr4O8, where Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions have localized moments, were found to show a large magnetic-field-induced volume increase approaching 500 ppm by applying a magnetic field of 9 T. This large volume increase appeared only at around 30 K. At 30 K, a spin-reorientation transition from ferrimagnetic to conical order occurs, giving rise to this large volume increase. The coexistence of ferrimagnetic and conical phases at this transition was found to be important, suggesting that such a large magnetic-field-induced volume change can be realized at various magnet…
Epitaxial strain is a proven route to enhancing the properties of complex oxides, however, the details of how the atomic structure accommodates strain are poorly understood due to the difficulty of measuring the oxygen positions in thin films. We present a general methodology for determining the atomic structure of strained oxide films via x-ray diffraction, which we demonstrate using LaNiO3 films. The oxygen octahedral rotations and distortions have been quantified by comparing the intensities of half-order Bragg peaks, arising from the two unit cell periodicity of the octahedral rotations, w…
Cobalt oxides have long been understood to display intriguing phenomena known as spin-state crossovers, where the cobalt ion spin changes vs. temperature, pressure, etc. A very different situation was recently uncovered in praseodymium-containing cobalt oxides, where a first-order coupled spin-state/structural/metal-insulator transition occurs, driven by a remarkable praseodymium valence transition. Such valence transitions, particularly when triggering spin-state and metal-insulator transitions, offer highly appealing functionality, but have thus far been confined to cryogenic temperatures in…
Advances in complex oxide heteroepitaxy have highlighted the enormous potential of utilizing strain engineering via lattice mismatch to control ferroelectricity in thin-film heterostructures. This approach, however, lacks the ability to produce large and continuously variable strain states, thus limiting the potential for designing and tuning the desired properties of ferroelectric films. Here, we observe and explore dynamic strain-induced ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ by laminating freestanding oxide films onto a stretchable polymer substrate. Using a combination of scanning probe microscopy,…
Combining multiple degrees of freedom in strongly-correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides would lead to fascinating magnetic and magnetocaloric features. Herein, the strain effects are used to markedly tailor the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of PrVO3 thin films. The selection of appropriate thickness and substrate enables us to dramatically decrease the coercive magnetic field from 2.4 T previously observed in sintered PVO3 bulk to 0.05 T for compressive thin films making from the PrVO3 compound a nearly soft magnet. This is associated with a marked enhancement of the ma…
The development of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) oxides as oxygen exchange and transport materials will benefit from mechanistic understanding of how oxygen transports through these materials. Using Density Functional Theory, we found there are two distinct oxygen interstitial diffusion mechanisms involving two different oxygen interstitial species that can be active in La2-xSrxNiO4+delta, and, we believe, in hyperstoichiometric RP oxides in general. The first mechanism is the previously proposed interstitialcy-mediated mechanism, which consists of diffusing oxide interstitials. The second mechanism …
Negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) materials have attracted tremendous interest due to their unusual physical properties and potential applications. Certain two-dimensional (2D) monolayer materials have also been found to exhibit NPR and the corresponding deformation mechanism varies. In this study, we found, based on first-principles calculations, that the Poisson's ratio (PR) sign of monolayer Blue Phosphorus Oxide (BPO) can be tuned by strain: the PR is positive under uniaxial strain <= -1% but becomes negative under > 0. The deformation mechanism for BPO under strain depends on the mutual comp…
The growth of a U3O7 oxide layer during the anionic oxidation of UO2 pellets induced very important mechanical stresses due to the crystallographic lattice parameters differences between UO2 and its oxide. These stresses, combined with the chemical processes of oxidation, can lead to the cracking of the system, called chemical fragmentation. We study the crystallographic orientation of the oxide lattice growing at the surface of UO2, pointing the fact that epitaxy relations at interface govern the coexistence of UO2 and U3O7. In this work, several results are given: - Determination of the epit…
Manipulating the orbital occupation of valence electrons via epitaxial strain in an effort to induce new functional properties requires considerations of how changes in the local bonding environment affect the band structure at the Fermi level. Using synchrotron radiation to measure the x-ray linear dichroism of epitaxially strained films of the correlated oxide CaFeO3, we demonstrate that the orbital polarization of the Fe valence electrons is opposite from conventional understanding. Although the energetic ordering of the Fe 3d orbitals is confirmed by multiplet ligand field theory analysis …
A novel approach for finding new transparent conductors involves taking advantage of electronic correlations in metallic transition metal oxides, such as SrVO$_3$, to enhance the electronic effective mass and suppress the plasma frequency ($ω_P$) to infrared. Success of this approach relies on finding a compound with the right electron effective mass and quasiparticle weight $Z$. Biaxial strain can in principle be a fruitful way to manipulate the electronic properties of materials to tune both of these quantities. In this study, we elucidate the behavior of the electronic properties of early t…
Some highly ordered compounds of graphene oxide (GO), e.g., the so-called clamped and unzipped GO, are shown to have piezoelectric responses via first-principles density functional calculations. By applying an electric field perpendicular to the GO basal plane, the largest value of in-plane strain and strain piezoelectric coefficient, d31 are found to be 0.12% and 0.24 pm/V, respectively, which are comparable with those of some advanced piezoelectric materials. An in-depth molecular structural analysis reveals that deformation of the oxygen doping regions in the clamped GO dominates its overal…
Direct observations using scanning transmission electron microscopy unveil an intriguing interfacial bi-layer that enables epitaxial growth of a strain-free, monoclinic, bronze-phase VO2(B) thin film on a perovskite SrTiO3 (STO) substrate. We observe an ultrathin (2-3 unit cells) interlayer best described as highly strained VO2(B) nanodomains combined with an extra (Ti,V)O2 layer on the TiO2 terminated STO (001) surface. By forming a fully coherent interface with the STO substrate and a semi-coherent interface with the strain-free epitaxial VO2(B) film above, the interfacial bi-layer enables t…
The various decay mechanisms of excitons in cuprous oxide (Cu2O) are highly sensitive to defects which can relax selection rules. Here we report cryogenic hyperspectral imaging of exciton luminescence from cuprous oxide crystals grown via the floating zone method showing the samples have few defects. Some locations, however, show strain splitting of the 1s orthoexciton triplet polariton luminescence. Strain is reduced by annealing. In addition, annealing causes annihilation of oxygen and copper vacancies, which leads to a negative correlation between luminescence of unlike vacancies.
Si doped ZnO has been reported to be a better conductor than pure ZnO. It is reported that carrier density increases and hence conductivity increases. However, the effect on optical transmission is yet not clear until our recent report [1]. Zn1-xSixO for x= 0, 0.013, 0.020 and 0.027 have been synthesized using sol-gel method (a citric acid-glycerol route) followed by solid state sintering. We found that there is a decrease in defect states due to Si doping. The correlation of strain to the decrement in vacancy sites is discussed in this report. In modern electronics and solar cell fabrication,…
Tunable quantum phase transitions and novel emergent fermions in solid state materials are fascinating subjects of research. Here, we propose a new stable two-dimensional (2D) material, the blue phosphorene oxide (BPO), which exhibits both. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that its equilibrium state is a narrow-bandgap semiconductor with three bands at low energy. Remarkably, a moderate strain can drive a semiconductor-to-semimetal quantum phase transition in BPO. At the critical transition point, the three bands cross at a single point at Fermi level, around which the quasipart…
Ordering of mobile defects in functional materials can give rise to fundamentally new phases possessing ferroic and multiferroic functionalities. Here we develop the Landau theory for strain induced ordering of defects (e.g. oxygen vacancies) in thin oxide films, considering both the ordering and wavelength of possible instabilities. Using derived analytical expressions for the energies of various defect-ordered states, we calculated and analyzed phase diagrams dependence on the film-substrate mismatch strain, concentration of defects, and Vegard coefficients. Obtained results open possibiliti…
Ion irradiation is a powerful tool to tune properties of semiconductors and, in particular, of gallium oxide (Ga2O3) which is a promising ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor exhibiting phase instability for high enough strain/disorder levels. In the present paper we observed an interesting interplay between the disorder and strain in monoclinic \b{eta}-Ga2O3 single crystals by comparing atomic and cluster ion irradiations as well as atomic ions co-implants. The results obtained by a combination of the channeling technique, x-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations show that the disorder accu…
Oxygen-defect control has long been considered an influential tuning knob for producing various property responses in complex oxide films. In addition to physical property changes, modification to the lattice structure, specifically lattice expansion, with increasing oxygen vacancy concentrations has been reported often and has become the convention for oxide materials. However, the current understanding of the lattice behavior in oxygen-deficient films becomes disputable when considering compounds containing different bonding environments or atomic layering. Moreover, tensile strain has recen…
Strain effects on the stabilization of Al ad-atom on graphene oxide(GO)nanosheet as well as its implications for NH3 storage have been investigated using first-principles calculations. The binding energy of Al ad-atom on GO is found to be a false indicator of its stability.Tensile strain is found to be very effective in stabilizing the Al ad-atom on GO.It strengthens the C-O bonds through an enhanced charge transfer from C to O atoms. Interestingly,C-O bond strength is found to be the correct index for Al's stability.Optimally strained Al-functionalized GO binds up to 6 NH3 molecules, while it b…
Stable oxygen sites on a PdO film over a Pd(100) thin structures with a (sqrt{5} times sqrt{5}) R27^circ surface-unit cell are determined using the first-principles electronic structure calculations with the generalized gradient approximation. The adsorbed monatomic oxygen goes to a site bridging two 2-fold-coordinated Pd atoms or to a site bridging a 2-fold-coordinated Pd atom and a 4-fold-coordinated Pd atom. Estimated reaction energies of CO oxidation by reduction of the oxidized PdO film and N_2O reduction mediated by oxidation of the PdO film are exothermic. Motion of the adsorbed oxygen …
We have investigated the magnetic ordering in the ultrathin c(10$\times$2) CoO(111) film supported on Ir(100) on the basis of ab-initio calculations. We find a close relationship between the local structural properties of the oxide film and the induced magnetic order, leading to alternating ferromagnetically and anti-ferromagnetically ordered segments. While the local magnetic order is directly related to the geometric position of the Co atoms, the mismatch between the CoO film and the Ir substrate leads to a complex long-range order of the oxide.
Understanding the diffusion of oxygen vacancies in oxides under different external stimuli is crucial for the design of ion-based electronic devices, improve catalytic performance, etc. In this manuscript, using an external electric field produced by an AFM tip, we obtain the room-temperature diffusion coefficient of oxygen-vacancies in thin-films of SrTiO$_3$ under compressive/tensile epitaxial strain. Tensile strain produces a substantial increase of the diffusion coefficient, facilitating the mobility of vacancies through the film. Additionally, the effect of tip bias, pulse time, and tempe…
Strain is known to greatly influence low temperature oxygen electrocatalysis on noble metal films, leading to significant enhancements in bifunctional activity essential for fuel cells and metal-air batteries. However, its catalytic impact on transition metal oxide thin films, such as perovskites, is not widely understood. Here, we epitaxially strain the conducting perovskite LaNiO3 to systematically determine its influence on both the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction. Uniquely, we found that compressive strain could significantly enhance both reactions, yielding a bifunctional c…
Manipulating the strain induced poly-domains and phase transition in correlated oxide material are important for high performance devices fabrication. Though the electronic transport in the strained oxide film at macroscopic scales can be directly measured, the anisotropic electronic state and the controllable phase separation cross the insulator-to-metal transition within nanoscale size are still elusive. Here, we selected VO2 crystal film as a prototypical oxide and achieved the manipulation of anisotropy electronic phase separation via injecting He+ nanobeam into VO2 film at room temperatur…
The equilibrium structure and functional properties exhibited by brownmillerite oxides, a family of perovskite-derived structures with alternating layers of $B$O$_6$ octahedra and $B$O$_4$ tetrahedra, viz., ordered arrangements of oxygen vacancies, is dependent on a variety of competing crystal-chemistry factors. We use electronic structure calculations to disentangle the complex interactions in two ferrates, Sr$_2$Fe$_2$O$_5$ and Ca$_2$Fe$_2$O$_5$, relating the stability of the equilibrium (strain-free) and thin film structures to both previously identified and newly herein proposed descripto…
An electro-optic modulator offers the function of modulating the propagation of light in a material with electric field and enables seamless connection between electronics-based computing and photonics-based communication. The search for materials with large electro-optic coefficients and low optical loss is critical to increase the efficiency and minimize the size of electro-optic devices. We present a semi-empirical method to compute the electro-optic coefficients of ferroelectric materials by combining first-principles density-functional theory calculations with Landau-Devonshire phenomenol…
Since oxide materials like Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ are usually applied as thin films, we studied the effect of biaxial strain, resulting from the substrate, on the electronic and magnetic properties and, in particular, on the formation energy of point defects. From our first-principles calculations, we determined that the probability of forming point defects - like vacancies or substitutions - in Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ could be adjusted by choosing a proper substrate. For example, the amount of anti-site disorder can be reduced with compressive strain in order to obtain purer Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ as needed for sp…
Metal-to-insulator phase transitions in complex oxide thin films are exciting phenomena which may be useful for device applications, but in many cases the physical mechanism responsible for the transition is not fully understood. Here we demonstrate that epitaxial strain generates local disproportionation of the NiO6 octahedra, driven through changes in the oxygen stoichiometry, and that this directly modifies the metal-to-insulator phase transition in epitaxial (001) NdNiO3 thin films. Theoretically, we predict that the Ni-O-Ni bond angle decreases, while octahedral tilt and local disproporti…
Oxygen vacancies in transition metal oxides facilitate catalysis critical for energy storage and generation. However, it has proven elusive to promote vacancies at the lower temperatures required for operation in devices such as metal-air batteries and portable fuel cells. Here, we use thin films of the perovskite-based strontium cobaltite (SrCoOx) to show that epitaxial strain is a powerful tool towards manipulating the oxygen content under conditions consistent with the oxygen evolution reaction, yielding increasingly oxygen deficient states in an environment where the cobaltite would normal…
We used first-principles calculations to investigate the existence and origin of the ferroelectric in- stability in the ABF3 fluoro-perovskites. We find that many fluoro-perovskites have a ferroelectric instability in their high symmetry cubic structure, which is of similar amplitude to that commonly found in oxide perovskites. In contrast to the oxides, however, the fluorides have nominal Born effective charges, indicating a different mechanism for the instability. We show that the instability originates from ionic size effects, and is therefore in most cases largely insensitive to pressure a…
The atomic environments involved in the magnetostriction effect in CoFe$_2$O$_4$ and La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ polycrystalline samples have been identified by differential extended x-ray absorption fine structure (DiffEXAFS) spectroscopy. We demonstrate that cobalt atoms at octahedral sites are responsible for their magnetostriction. The analysis of DiffEXAFS data indicates that the local-site magnetostrictive strains of Co atoms are reversed in these two oxides, in agreement with the macroscopic magnetostriction. For the CoFe$_2$O$_4$ spinel, a large negative strain along the (100) directio…
The interaction of crystalline defects leads to strain hardening in bulk metals. Metals with high stacking fault energy (SFE), such as aluminum, tend to have low strain hardening rates due to an inability to form stacking faults and deformation twins. Here, we use in situ SEM mechanical compressions to find that colloidally synthesized defect-free 114 nm Al nanocubes combine a high linear strain hardening rate of 4.1 GPa with a high strength of 1.1 GPa. These nanocubes have a 3 nm self-passivating oxide layer that has a large influence on mechanical behavior and the accumulation of dislocation…

Photocatalytic materials are pivotal for the implementation of disruptive clean energy applications such as conversion of H$_{2}$O and CO$_{2}$ into fuels and chemicals driven by solar energy. However, efficient and cost-effective materials able to catalyze the chemical reactions of interest when exposed to visible light are scarce due to the stringent electronic conditions that they must satisfy. Chemical and nanostructuring approaches are capable of improving the catalytic performance of known photoactive compounds however the complexity of the synthesized nanomaterials and sophistication of…
