Defect pyrochlore oxides have attracted a great interest as promising luminescent materials due to their flexible composition and high electron/hole mobility. In this work, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of lanthanide-doped (Ln) defect pyrochlore oxides \ce{KNbWO6}:0.125Ln$^{3+}$ by using first-principles calculations. We perform structural optimizations of various defect pyrochlore models and calculate their electronic structures, revealing that hydration has a significant influence on both local symmetry around Eu$^{3+}$ ion and band structures with an alteration of their luminescent behaviour. In the hydrated compounds, the electric-dipole $^5$D$_0-^7$F$_2$ transition is found to be partially suppressed by the raised local symmetry, and the water molecules in the compounds can mediate the non-radiative energy transfer between the activator Eu$^{3+}$ ions and the host, resulting in the quenching effect. It turns out that the oxygen vacancies are detrimental to luminescence as they reduce the Eu$^{3+}$ ion in its vicinity to Eu$^{2+}$ ion and also serve as traps for conduction electrons excited by incident light. Our calculations for \ce{KNbWO6}:0.125Ln$^{3+}$ (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm) support that defect pyrochlore oxide \ce{KNbWO6} can also be used as luminescence host for Ln$^{3+}$ ion doping, giving a valuable insight into a variation trend in luminescent properties of these materials at atomic level.
The various decay mechanisms of excitons in cuprous oxide (Cu2O) are highly sensitive to defects which can relax selection rules. Here we report cryogenic hyperspectral imaging of exciton luminescence from cuprous oxide crystals grown via the floating zone method showing the samples have few defects. Some locations, however, show strain splitting of the 1s orthoexciton triplet polariton luminescence. Strain is reduced by annealing. In addition, annealing causes annihilation of oxygen and copper vacancies, which leads to a negative correlation between luminescence of unlike vacancies.
We present an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM) analysis of the perovskite (LaFeO3) and pyrochlore (Yb2Ti2O7 and Pr2Zr2O7) oxides and demonstrate that both the shape and contrast of visible atomic columns in annular dark-field (ADF) images are sensitive to the presence of nearby atoms of low atomic number (e.g. oxygen). We show that point defects (e.g. oxygen vacancies), which are invisible - or difficult to observe due to limited sensitivity - in X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements, are the origin of the complex magnetic ground state of pyrochlore…
Improved thermomechanical properties have been reported for various high-entropy oxides containing typically five metal cations. This study further investigates a series of duodenary (11 metals + oxygen) high-entropy oxides by mixing different fractions of a five-cation fluorite-structured niobate and a seven-cation pyrochlore (both containing Yb) with matching lattice constants. Nine compositions of duodenary high-entropy oxides have been examined. All of them exhibit single high-entropy phases of either disordered fluorite or ordered pyrochlore structure. An order-disorder transition (ODT) i…
We employ high-resolution total neutron scattering in conjunction with reverse Monte Carlo simulations to examine, in a detailed and unbiased manner, the crystal structure of the vacancy-ordered oxide pyrochlore Pb2Ru2O6.5 in light of its structural analogy with proton-ordering in the structures of ice. We find that the vacancy and the O' ion are completely ordered, and that the average structure in the F43m space group describes the vacancy ordering precisely. We complement these results with an examination of the Pb2+ lone pair network using density functional electronic structure calculatio…
Rare-earth-doped optical materials are important for light sources in optoelectronics, as well as for efficient optical amplification elements and other elements of photonics. On the basis of the previously developed method of anhydrous, low-temperature synthesis of Er/Yb oxides from their chlorides we fabricated proper nanoparticles with defined parameters and used them for the development of optically transparent, luminescent polymer nanocomposite with low optical scattering, suitable for direct, light-induced formation of photonic elements. Introduction of preformed gold nanoparticles in su…
The discovery of a new beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductor CsOs2O6 with Tc = 3.3 K is reported. It is the third superconductor in the family of beta-pyrochlore oxides, following KOs2O6 with Tc = 9.6 K and RbOs2O6 with Tc = 6.3 K. The Tc of this series decreases with increasing the ionic radius of alkaline metal ions, imposing negative chemical pressure upon the Os pyrochlore lattice.
We report the synthesis and structural study of mixed oxides in the Ln2ScNbO7 series. New phases with Ln = Pr, Eu, Gd and Dy are obtained. All crystallize in the cubic pyrochlore structure type, space group F-d3m, with no Sc-Nb ordering on the B-site. The structures are determined by Rietveld refinement. The evolution of cell parameters, interatomic distances and angles as a function of lanthanide cation size is discussed. Magnetic measurements show the absence of ordering down to 2 K, in agreement with the presence of strong geometric frustration in the lanthanide sublattice. The europium pha…
We report the discovery of a new pyrochlore oxide superconductor RbOs2O6. The compound crystallizes in the same beta-pyrochlore structure as the recently discovered superconductor KOs2O6, where Os atoms form a corner-sharing tetrahedral network called the pyrochlore lattice with Rb or K atoms in the cage. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline samples evidence a bulk superconductivity with Tc = 6.3 K.
We report the filling control of the pyrochlore oxide Y2Ir2O7. Metallic ground state appears with increasing substitution content x (x >= 0.3). We have revealed that the density of states at the Fermi level rapidly changes with x by this filling control of Y2Ir2O7.
Electronic properties of the metallic pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 are studied by means of electrical resistivity and Hall measurements. Semimetallic band structures are revealed as expected from band structure calculations. It is found that large changes in carrier density and mass occur at the structural phase transition at Ts1 = 200 K. A large mass enhancement is observed, particularly for the high-temperature phase with the ideal pyrochlore structure, suggesting that an anomalous correlation has an important effect on the itinerant electrons in the pyrochlore lattice.
We report the electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and thermal conductivity of single-crystalline and sintered samples of the 5d pyrochlore oxide CsW2O6. The electrical resistivity of the single crystal is 3 mohm cm at 295 K and gradually increases with decreasing temperature above 215 K (Phase I). The thermoelectric power of the single-crystalline and sintered samples shows a constant value of approximately -60 uV K-1 in Phase I. These results reflect that the electron conduction by W 5d electrons in Phase I is incoherent and in the hopping regime, although a band gap does not open a…
Phonons are produced when an excited vacancy in cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) relaxes. Time resolved luminescence was used to find the excited copper vacancy (acceptor) and oxygen vacancy (donor) trap levels and lifetimes. It was also used to determine the typical energy and number of phonons in the phonon pulses emitted by vacancies. The vacancy properties of cuprous oxide are controlled by several synthesis parameters and by the temperature. We directly demonstrate the absorption of light by oxygen vacancies with transient absorption. Copper and oxygen vacancies behave differently, in part because…
The 5d pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 exhibits successive phase transitions from a cubic pyrochlore structure (phase I) to a tetragonal structure without inversion symmetry below Ts1 of ~200 K (phase II) and further to another noncentrosymmetric tetragonal structure below Ts2 of ~120 K (phase III). The two low-temperature phases may be characterized by odd-parity multipolar orders induced by the Fermi liquid instability of the spin-orbit-coupled metal. To control the tetragonal domains generated by the transitions and to obtain a single-domain crystal for the measurements of anisotropic properties,…
A unique type of frustrated lattice is found in two A-site ordered spinel oxides, LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8. Because of the large size mismatch between Li+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions at the A site, the pyrochlore lattice, made up of Cr3+ ions carrying spin 3/2, becomes an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, i.e., a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice. We introduce a parameter, the breathing factor Bf, which quantifies the degree of frustration in the pyrochlore lattice: Bf is defined as J'/J, where J' and J are nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions in the large and small tetrahedra, respectivel…
We report the results of 87Rb NMR measurements on RbOs2O6, a new member of the family of the superconducting pyrochlore-type oxides with a critical temperature Tc = 6.4 K. In the normal state, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time T1 obeys the Korringa-type relation T1T = constant and the Knight shift is independent of temperature, indicating the absence of strong magnetic correlations. In the superconducting state, T1^{-1}(T) exhibits a tiny coherence enhancement just below Tc, and decreases exponentially with further decreasing temperatures. The value of the corresponding energy gap is cl…
Superconductivity in the potassium osmium oxide KOs2O6 crystallizing in the beta-pyrochlore structure is studied by means of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. It is the second superconductor in the family of pyrochlore oxides, following the alfa-type pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 which is believed to be a conventional s-wave superconductor. The superconducting transition temperature Tc of KOs2O6 is 9.6 K, almost one order higher than the Tc = 1.0 K of Cd2Re2O7. Moreover, the superconductivity of KOs2O6 is remarkably robust under high magnetic fields, with a large u…
We investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) effect of the pyrochlore oxide Nd2Ir2O7, which shows a metal-insulator transition at T_MI =33 K. A small positive MR effect was observed in the metallic state above T_MI, while a large negative MR effect was observed in the insulating state below T_MI . MR effects exceeding 3000% were found at 1 K at a field of 9 T. As a result, we confirmed the crossover from the insulating state to a state with a small or partial band gap in a field up to 56 T. Furthermore, from the MR effect in Eu2Ir2O7 (T_MI = 120 K) and Gd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (T_MI = 127 K), we reveal…
Emerging technologies are demanding innovative properties of glasses. In this work, Cerium Oxide is used as a dopant in Zinc-Tellurite samples and its effects on the properties of the glass are investigated. Thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous nature of all samples. The bivalent nature of Cerium is investigated spectroscopically and a strong redshift induced by the dopant is attributed to charge transfers O$^{2-}{\rightarrow}$Ce$^{4+}$, while the 4f-5d transition of Ce$^{3+}$ could not be identified in absorption or luminescence measurements. Yellow/red (570/650 nm) …
We report a method to promote photoluminescence emission in graphene materials by enhancing carrier scattering instead of directly modifying band structure in multilayer reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanospheres. We intentionally curl graphene layers to form nanospheres by reducing graphene oxide with spherical polymer templates to manipulate the carrier scattering. These nanospheres produce hot-carrier luminescence with more than ten-fold improvement of emission efficiency as compared to planar nanosheets. With increasing excitation power, hot-carrier luminescence from nanospheres exhibits abn…
We investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore oxide Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ using the density-functional theory plus on-site repulsion ($U$) method, and depict the ground-state phase diagram with respect to $U$. We conclude that the all-in/all-out non-collinear magnetic order is stable in a wide range of $U$. We also show that the easy-axis anisotropy arising from the spin-orbit (SO) coupling plays a significant role in stabilizing the all-in/all-out magnetic order. A \textit{pseudo gap} was observed near the transition between the antiferromagnetic metallic and insulating…
We generalize and systematize basic experimental data on optical and luminescence properties of ZnO single crystals, thin films, powders, ceramics, and nanocrystals. We consider and study mechanisms by which two main emission bands occur, a short-wavelength band near the fundamental absorption edge and a broad long-wavelength band, the maximum of which usually lies in the green spectral range. We determine a relationship between the two luminescence bands and study in detail the possibility of controlling the characteristics of ZnO by varying the maximum position of the short-wavelength band. …
We present optical conductivity spectra for $Pb_{2}Ru_{2}O_{7-δ}$ single crystal at different temperatures. Among reported pyrochlore ruthenates, this compound exhibits metallic behavior in a wide temperature range and has the least resistivity. At low frequencies, the optical spectra show typical Drude responses, but with a knee feature around 1000 \cm. Above 20000 \cm, a broad absorption feature is observed. Our analysis suggests that the low frequency responses can be understood from two Drude components arising from the partially filled Ru $t_{2g}$ bands with different plasma frequencies a…
We report neutron scattering measurements of the spinel oxide LiGaCr$_{4}$O$_{8}$, in which magnetic ions Cr$^{3+}$ form a breathing pyrochlore lattice. Our experiments reveal the coexistence of a nearly dispersionless resonance mode and dispersive spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, which can be quantitatively described by a quantum spin model of hexagonal loops and linear spin wave theory with the same set of exchange parameters, respectively. Comparison to other Cr spinel oxides reveals a linear relationship between the resonance energy and lattice constant across all t…
Spin ice materials are the model systems that have a zero-point entropy as \textit{T} $\rightarrow$ 0 K, owing to the frozen disordered states. Here, we chemically alter the well-known spin ice Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ by replacing Ti sites with isovalent but larger Zr ion. Unlike the Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ which is a pyrochlore material, Ho$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ crystallizes in disordered pyrochlore structure. We have performed detailed structural, ac magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity studies on Ho$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ to investigate the interplay of structural disorder and frustrated …
A novel macroscopically degenerate state called kagome ice, which was recently found in a spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 in a magnetic field applied along the [111] direction of the cubic unit cell, is studied by specific heat measurements. The residual entropy of the kagome ice is estimated to be 0.65 J/K mol Dy, which is nearly 40 % of that for the tetrahedral spin ice obtained in a zero field (1.68 J/K mol Dy) and is in good agreement with a theoretical prediction. It is also reported that the kagom ice state, which is stabilized at a range of magnetic field of 0.3 ~ 0.6 T, is a 'gas' phase and…
The oxide pyrochlore Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is in some ways analogous to perovskite PbTiO$_3$, in that Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has two cations, Bi$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ in oxidation states that are normally associated with a propensity to off-center. However, unlike PbTiO$_3$, Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is experimentally observed to remain cubic down to 2 K, while the only observed ionic displacements are local and incoherent. Here we report first-principles calculations of the zone-center phonons of the ordered cubic pyrochlore which reveal several lattice instabilities. An analysis of the structural energetics s…
We used classical and accelerated molecular dynamics simulations to characterize vacancy-mediated diffusion of cations in Gd$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore as a function of the disorder on the microsecond timescale. We find that cation vacancy diffusion is slow in materials with low levels of disorder. However, higher levels of disorder allow for fast cation diffusion, which is then also accompanied by fast antisite annihilation and ordering of the cations. The cation diffusivity is therefore not constant, but decreases as the material reorders. The results suggest that fast cation diffusion is tri…
We present a photoluminescence study of single-layer MoS2 flakes on SiO2 surfaces. We demonstrate that the luminescence peak position of flakes prepared from natural MoS2, which varies by up to 25 meV between individual as-prepared flakes, can be homogenized by annealing in vacuum, which removes adsorbates from the surface. We use HfO2 and Al2O3 layers prepared by atomic layer deposition to cover some of our flakes. We clearly observe a suppression of the low-energy luminescence peak observed for as-prepared flakes at low temperatures, indicating that this peak originates from excitons bound t…
Certain pyrochlore oxides are among the best oxygen catalysts in alkaline media. Hence, exploring epitaxial films of these materials is of great fundamental and technological interest. Unfortunately, direct film growth of one of the most promising pyrochlores, Bi$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$, has not yet been achieved, owing to the difficulty of oxidizing platinum metal in the precursor material to Pt$^{4+}$. In this work, in order to induce oxidation of the platinum, we annealed pulsed laser deposited films consisting of epitaxial $δ$-Bi$_2$O$_3$ and co-deposited, comparatively disordered platinum. We pres…
Structure-property relationships is a key materials science concept that enables the design of new materials. In the case of materials for application in radiation environments, correlating radiation tolerance with fundamental structural features of a material enables materials discovery. Here, we use a machine learning model to examine the factors that govern amorphization resistance in the complex oxide pyrochlore ($A_2B_2$O$_7$). We examine the fidelity of predictions based on cation radii and electronegativities, the oxygen positional parameter, and the energetics of disordering and amorph…
The thermal conductivity study on the pyrochlore structured ceramics is important for utilization of these materials as an inert matrix fuel, electrolytes for oxide fuel cell and thermal barrier coating. The impact of porosity, structural defects and boundary scattering on thermal properties of the nanocrystalline Gd2Ti2O7 fabricated by spark plasma sintering followed by high energy ball milling has been investigated. The thermal conductivity has been measured in the temperature range from room temperature to 900 C using laser flash apparatus (LFA), and results were discussed by including seve…
Since the discovery of the Verwey transition in magnetite, transition metal compounds with pyrochlore structures have been intensively studied as a platform for realizing remarkable electronic phase transitions. We report the discovery of a unique phase transition that preserves the cubic symmetry of the beta-pyrochlore oxide CsW$_2$O$_6$, where each of W 5d electrons are confined in regular-triangle W3 trimers. This trimer formation is an unprecedented self-organization of d electrons, which can be resolved into a charge order satisfying the Anderson condition in a nontrivial way, orbital ord…
Topological phases have attracted much interest in recent years. While there are a number of three-dimensional materials exhibiting topological properties, there are relatively few two-dimensional examples aside from the well-known quantum Hall systems. Here we make materials-specific predictions for topological phases using density functional theory combined with Hartree-Fock theory that includes the full orbital structure of the relevant iridum $d$-orbitals and the strong but finite spin-orbit coupling strength. We find Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ bilayer and trilayer films grown along the [111] direct…
Uniaxial hot pressing has been used to obtain ceramics based on zinc oxide, and their optical, x-ray-structure, luminescence, and scintillation characteristics have been studied. It is shown that, by changing the concentration of the dopant (Ga) and the codopant (N), it is possible to change the intensities of the edge band (397.5 nm) and the intraband luminescence (510 nm) of the ZnO luminescence, as well as their ratio. Undoped ZnO ceramic has good transparency in the visible region and fairly high luminous yield: 9050 photons per MeV. Ceramic ZnO:Ga possesses intense edge luminescence with …
RbOs2O6, the third superconducting pyrochlore oxide (known so far), has been synthesized by encapsulation and by high pressure techniques. Suitable post chemical treatment of the as-prepared sample allowed us to eliminate the impurity phases. Bulk superconductivity with Tc=6.4 K was observed in magnetisation and specific heat measurements. The transition temperature of RbOs2O6 was found to be the same for both preparation methods. Structural investigations showed that Rb atoms occupy the 8b site in the pyrochlore lattice with a lattice parameter of 10.1137(1) A.
First-principles calculations are performed to investigate f magnetism in A$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (A=Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb) magnetic pyrochlore oxides. The Hubbard U parameter and the relativistic spin orbit correction is applied for more accurate description of the electronic structure of the systems. It is argued that the main obstacle for first-principles study of these systems is the multi-minima solutions of their electronic configuration. Among the studied pyrochlores, Gd$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows the least multi-minima problem. The crystal electric field theory is applied for phenomenological …
The discovery of new topological electronic materials brings a chance to uncover novel physics and plays a key role in observing and controlling various intriguing phenomena. Up to now, many materials have been theoretically proposed and experimentally proved to host different kinds of topological states. Unfortunately, there is little convincing experimental evidence for the existence of topological oxides. The reason is that oxidation of oxygen leads to ionic crystal in general and makes band inversion unlikely. In addition, the realization of different topological states in a single materia…
The cubic (c) and monoclinic (m) polymorphs of Gd2O3 were studied using the combined analysis of several materials science techniques - X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations for the samples under study were performed as well. The cubic phase of gadolinium oxide (c-Gd2O3) synthesized using a precipitation method exhibits spheroidal-like nanoclusters with well-defined edges assembled from primary nanoparticles with an average size of 50 nm, wh…
The study of hexagonal silicon polytypes attracts special attention due to their unique physical properties compared to the traditional cubic phase of Si. Thus, for some hexagonal phases, a significant improvement in the emission properties has been demonstrated. In this work, the luminescent properties of SiO2/Si structures irradiated with Kr+ ions at different doses and annealed at 800 °C have been systematically investigated. For such structures, a photoluminescence line at ~ 1240 nm is observed and associated with the formation of hexagonal 9R-Si phase inclusions. It is found that the vari…
In this work, the possibility of using niobium oxide recovered from tailings from the Penouta Sn-Nb-Ta deposit (located at the North of Spain) as starting material for growing microstructures is demonstrated. The properties of the starting material have been studied to understand its crystal structure, quality and purity. Recovered niobium oxide powders are mainly of TT-Nb2O5. These powders have been used to grow Nb22O54 microrods by an evaporation method in an argon atmosphere. Different characterization techniques (X-Ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, lu…
An indispensable step to understand collective magnetic phenomena in rare-earth compounds is the determination of spatially-anisotropic single-ion properties resulting from spin-orbit coupling and crystal field (CF). The CF Hamiltonian has a discrete energy spectrum -- accessible to spectroscopic probes such as neutron scattering -- controlled by a number of independent parameters reflecting the point-symmetry of the magnetic sites. Determining these parameters in low-symmetry systems is often challenging. Here, we describe a general method to analyze CF excitation spectra using adjustable eff…
