A graph $\mathcal{H}=(W,E_\mathcal{H})$ is said to have {\em bandwidth} at most $b$ if there exists a labeling of $W$ as $w_1,w_2,\dots,w_n$ such that $|i-j|\leq b$ for every edge $w_iw_j\in E_\mathcal{H}$. We say that $\mathcal{H}$ is a {\em balanced $(β,Δ)$-graph} if it is a bipartite graph with bandwidth at most $β|W|$ and maximum degree at most $Δ$, and it also has a proper 2-coloring $χ:W\rightarrow[2]$ such that $||χ^{-1}(1)|-|χ^{-1}(2)||\leqβ|χ^{-1}(2)|$.
In this paper, we prove that for every $γ>0$ and every natural number $Δ$, there exists a constant $β>0$ such that for every balanced $(β,Δ)$-graph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices we have $$R(\mathcal{H}, \mathcal{H}, C_n) \leq (3+γ)n$$ for all sufficiently large odd $n$. The upper bound is sharp for several classes of graphs. Let $θ_{n,t}$ be the graph consisting of $t$ internally disjoint paths of length $n$ all sharing the same endpoints. As a corollary, for each fixed $t\geq 1$, $R(θ_{n, t},θ_{n, t}, C_{nt+λ})=(3t+o(1))n,$ where $λ=0$ if $nt$ is odd and $λ=1$ if $nt$ is even. In particular, we have $R(C_{2n},C_{2n}, C_{2n+1})=(6+o(1))n$, which is a special case of a result of Figaj and Łuczak (2018).
The $k$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of a bipartite graph $H$ is the least integer $n$ for which every $k$-edge-coloured complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The study of bipartite Ramsey numbers was initiated, over 40 years ago, by Faudree and Schelp and, independently, by Gyárfás and Lehel, who determined the $2$-colour Ramsey number of paths. In this paper we determine asymptotically the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of paths and (even) cycles.
The $k$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of a bipartite graph $H$ is the least integer $N$ for which every $k$-edge-coloured complete bipartite graph $K_{N,N}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. The study of bipartite Ramsey numbers was initiated over 40 years ago by Faudree and Schelp and, independently, by Gyárfás and Lehel, who determined the $2$-colour bipartite Ramsey number of paths. Recently the $3$-colour Ramsey number of paths and (even) cycles, was essentially determined as well. Improving the results of DeBiasio, Gyárfás, Krueger, Ruszinkó, and Sárközy, in this paper we determine a…
We estimate Ramsey numbers for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. In particular we determine asymptotically the two and three color Ramsey numbers for grid graphs. More generally, we determine asymptotically the two color Ramsey number for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree and the three color Ramsey number for such graphs with the additional assumption that the bipartite graph is balanced.
We estimate the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced bipartite graphs $H$ with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. More precisely, we show that the minimum value of $N$ such that in any $3$-edge colouring of $K_{N,N}$ there is a monochromatic copy of $H$ is at most $\big(3/2+o(1)\big)|V(H)|$. In particular, we determine asymptotically the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced grid graphs.
In this paper, we investigate the set of sizes of induced subgraphs of bipartite graphs. We introduce the definition of $C$-$Bipartite$-$Ramsey$ graphs, which is closely related to Ramsey graphs and prove that in `most' cases, these graphs have multiplication tables of $Ω(e(G))$ in size. We apply our result to give direct evidence to the conjecture that the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ is the minimiser of the multiplication table on $n^2$ edges raised by Narayanan, Sahasrabudhe and Tomon.
In this paper we study Ramsey numbers for trees of diameter 3 (bistars) vs., respectively, trees of diameter 2 (stars), complete graphs, and many complete graphs. In the case of bistars vs. many complete graphs, we determine this number exactly as a function of the Ramsey number for the complete graphs. We also determine the order of growth of the bipartite $k$-color Ramsey number for a bistar.
In a $(G^1,G^2)$ coloring of a graph $G$, every edge of $G$ is in $G^1$ or $G^2$. For two bipartite graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, the bipartite Ramsey number $BR(H_1, H_2)$ is the least integer $b\geq 1$, such that for every $(G^1, G^2)$ coloring of the complete bipartite graph $K_{b,b}$, results in either $H_1\subseteq G^1$ or $H_2\subseteq G^2$. As another view, for bipartite graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ and a positive integer $m$, the $m$-bipartite Ramsey number $BR_m(H_1, H_2)$ of $H_1$ and $H_2$ is the least integer $n$, such that every subgraph $G$ of $K_{m,n}$ results in $H_1\subseteq G$ or $H_2\su…
Gallai-colorings are edge-colored complete graphs in which there are no rainbow triangles. Within such colored complete graphs, we consider Ramsey-type questions, looking for specified monochromatic graphs. In this work, we consider monochromatic bipartite graphs since the numbers are known to grow more slowly than for non-bipartite graphs. The main result shows that it suffices to consider only $3$-colorings which have a special partition of the vertices. Using this tool, we find several sharp numbers and conjecture the sharp value for all bipartite graphs. In particular, we determine the Gal…
Let $H\xrightarrow{s} G$ denote that any edge-coloring of $H$ by $s$ colors contains a monochromatic $G$. The degree Ramsey number $r_Δ(G;s)$ is defined to be $\min\{Δ(H):H\xrightarrow{s} G\}$, and the degree bipartite Ramsey number $br_Δ(G;s)$ is defined to be $\min\{Δ(H):H\xrightarrow{s} G\; \mbox{and} \;χ(H)=2\}$. In this note, we show that $r_Δ(K_{m,n};s)$ is linear on $n$ with $m$ fixed. We also determine $br_Δ(G;s)$ where $G$ are trees, including stars and paths, and complete bipartite graphs.
In this paper, we present several density-type theorems which show how to find a copy of a sparse bipartite graph in a graph of positive density. Our results imply several new bounds for classical problems in graph Ramsey theory and improve and generalize earlier results of various researchers. The proofs combine probabilistic arguments with some combinatorial ideas. In addition, these techniques can be used to study properties of graphs with a forbidden induced subgraph, edge intersection patterns in topological graphs, and to obtain several other Ramsey-type statements.
The bipartite Ramsey number $b(s,t)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every blue-red edge coloring of $K_{n,n}$ contains either a blue $K_{s,s}$ or a red $K_{t,t}$. In the bipartite $K_{2,2}$-free process, we begin with an empty graph on vertex set $X\cup Y$, $|X|=|Y|=n$. At each step, a random edge from $X\times Y$ is added under the restriction that no $K_{2,2}$ is formed. This step is repeated until no more edges can be added. In this note, we analyze this process and show that the resulting graph witnesses that $b(2,t) =Ω\left(t^{3/2}/\log t \right)$, thereby improving the best known …
We investigate size Ramsey numbers involving bipartite graphs. It is proved that, if each forbidden graph is fixed or grows with n (in a certain uniform manner), then the extremal function has a linear asymptotics. The corresponding slope can be obtained as the minimum of a certain mixed integer program. Applying the Farkas Lemma, we solve the MIP for complete bipartite graphs, in particular answering a question of Erdos, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp (1978) who asked for the asymptotics of the size Ramsey number of (K_{s,n},K_{s,n}) for fixed s and large n.
Given bipartite graphs $H_1$, \dots , $H_k$, the bipartite Ramsey number $br(H_1,\dots, H_k)$ is the minimum integer $N$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of complete bipartite graph $K_{N, N}$ contains a monochromatic $H_i$ in color $i$ for $1\le i\le k$. There are considerable results on asymptotic values of bipartite Ramsey numbers of cycles. For exact value, Zhang-Sun \cite{Zhangs} determined $br(C_4, C_{2n})$, Zhang-Sun-Wu \cite{Zhangsw} determined $br(C_6, C_{2n})$, and Gholami-Rowshan \cite{GR} determined $br(C_8, C_{2n})$. In this paper, we solve all remaining cases and give the exact va…
The Zarankiewicz number $z(b;s)$ is the maximum size of a subgraph of $K_{b,b}$ which does not contain $K_{s,s}$ as a subgraph. The two-color bipartite Ramsey number $b(s,t)$ is the smallest integer $b$ such that any coloring of the edges of $K_{b,b}$ with two colors contains a $K_{s,s}$ in the first color or a $K_{t,t}$ in the second color. In this work, we design and exploit a computational method for bounding and computing Zarankiewicz numbers. Using it, we obtain several new values and bounds on $z(b;s)$ for $3 \le s \le 6$. Our approach and new knowledge about $z(b;s)$ permit us to improv…
Given bipartite graphs $G_1, \ldots, G_n$, the bipartite Ramsey number $BR(G_1,\ldots, G_n)$ is the last integer $b$ such that any complete bipartite graph $K_{b,b}$ with edges coloured with colours $1,2,\ldots,n$ contains a copy of some $G_i$ ($1\leq i\leq n$) where all edges of $G_i$ have colour $i$. As another view of bipartite Ramsey numbers, for given bipartite graphs $G_1, \ldots, G_n$ and a positive integer $m$, the $m$-bipartite Ramsey number $BR_m(G_1, \ldots, G_n)$, is defined as the least integer $b$, such that any complete bipartite graph $K_{m,b}$ with edges coloured with colours …
We consider quadruples of positive integers $(a,b,m,n)$ with $a\leq b$ and $m\leq n$ such that any proper edge-coloring of the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ contains a rainbow $K_{a,b}$ subgraph. We show that any such quadruple with $a\leq m$ and $n>(a^2-a+1)(b-1)$ satisfies this property. We also show that the quadruple $(2,3,3,6)$ satisfies this property. We end with a conjecture.
We find the exact value of the Ramsey number $R(C_{2\ell},K_{1,n})$, when $\ell$ and $n=O(\ell^{10/9})$ are large. Our result is closely related to the behaviour of Turán number $ex(N, C_{2\ell})$ for an even cycle whose length grows quickly with $N$.
For two given graphs $G$ and $H$ the planar Ramsey number $PR(G,H)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every planar graph $F$ on $n$ vertices either contains a copy of $G$, or its complement contains a copy of $H$. In this paper, we first characterize some structural properties of $C_4$-free planar graphs, and then we determine all planar Ramsey numbers $PR(C_4, W_n)$, for $n\ge 3$.
For bipartite graphs $G$ and $H$ and a positive integer $m$, the $m$-bipartite Ramsey number $BR_m(G, H)$ of $G$ and $H$ is the smallest integer $n$, such that every red-blue coloring of $K_{m,n}$ results in a red $G$ or a blue $H$. Zhenming Bi, Gary Chartrand and Ping Zhang in \cite{bi2018another} evaluate this numbers for all positive integers $m$ when $G= K_{2,2}$ and $H \in \{K_{2,3}, K_{3,3}\}$, especially in a long and hard argument they showed that $BR_5(K_{2,2}, K_{3,3}) = BR_6(K_{2,2}, K_{3,3}) = 12$ and $BR_7(K_{2,2}, K_{3,3}) = BR_8(K_{2,2}, K_{3,3}) = 9$. In this article, by a shor…
Let $k,l,m$ be integers and $r(k,l,m)$ be the minimum integer $N$ such that for any red-blue-green coloring of $K_{N,N}$, there is a red matching of size at least $k$ in a component, or a blue matching of at least size $l$ in a component, or a green matching of size at least $m$ in a component. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $r(k,l,m)$ completely. Applying a technique originated by Łuczak that applies Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma to reduce the problem of showing the existence of a monochromatic cycle to show the existence of a monochromatic matching in a component, we obtain th…
Set multipartite Ramsey numbers were introduced in 2004, ge-neralizing the celebrated Ramsey numbers. Let $C_4$ denote the four cycle and let $K_{1,n}$ denote the star on $n+1$ vertices. In this paper we investigate bounds on $C_4-K_{1,n}$ set multipartite Ramsey numbers. Relationships between these numbers and the classical $C_4-K_{1,n}$ Ramsey numbers are explored. Then several near-optimal or exact classes are derived as applications. As the main goal, polarity graphs from projective planes allow us to find suitable subgraphs which yield some optimal classes too.
Let $F$, $G$ and $H$ be simple graphs. We say $F \rightarrow (G, H)$ if for every $2$-coloring of the edges of $F$ there exists a monochromatic $G$ or $H$ in $F$. The Ramsey number $r(G, H)$ is defined as $r(G, H) = min\{|V (F)|: F \rightarrow (G, H)\}$, while the restricted size Ramsey number $r^{*}(G, H)$ is defined as $r^{*}(G, H) = min\{|E (F)|: F \rightarrow (G, H) , |V (F) | = r(G, H)\}$. In this paper we determine previously unknown restricted size Ramsey numbers $r^{*}(P_3, C_n)$ for $7 \leq n \leq 12$. We also give new upper bound $r^{*}(P_3, C_n) \leq 2n-2$ for even $n \geq 8$.
Let $G$ and $G_1, G_2, \ldots , G_t$ be given graphs. By $G\rightarrow (G_1, G_2, \ldots , G_t)$ we mean if the edges of $G$ are arbitrarily colored by $t$ colors, then for some $i$, $1\leq i\leq t$, the spanning subgraph of $G$ whose edges are colored with the $i$-th color, contains a copy of $G_i$. The Ramsey number $R(G_1, G_2, \ldots, G_t)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that $K_n\rightarrow (G_1, G_2, \ldots , G_t)$ and the size Ramsey number $\hat{R}(G_1, G_2, \ldots , G_t)$ is defined as $\min\{|E(G)|:~G\rightarrow (G_1, G_2, \ldots , G_t)\}$. Also, for given graphs $G_1, G_2…
For an integer $r\geq 2$ and bipartite graphs $H_i$, where $1\leq i\leq r$, the bipartite Ramsey number $br(H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_r)$ is the minimum integer $N$ such that any $r$-edge coloring of the complete bipartite graph $K_{N,N}$ contains a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to $H_i$ in color $i$ for some $i$, $1\leq i\leq r$. We show that for $α_1,α_2>0$, $br(C_{2\lfloor α_1 n\rfloor},C_{2\lfloor α_2 n\rfloor})=(α_1+α_2+o(1))n$. We also show that if $r\geq 3, α_1,α_2>0, α_{j+2}\geq [(j+2)!-1]\sum^{j+1}_{i=1} α_i$ for $j=1,2,\ldots,r-2$, then $br(C_{2\lfloor α_1 n\rfloor},C_{2\lfloor α_2 n\rflo…
For a given graph $F$ we consider the family of (finite) graphs $G$ with the Ramsey property for $F$, that is the set of such graphs $G$ with the property that every two-colouring of the edges of $G$ yields a monochromatic copy of $F$. For $F$ being a triangle Friedgut, Rödl, Ruciński, and Tetali (2004) established the sharp threshold for the Ramsey property in random graphs. We obtained a simpler proof of this result which extends to a more general class of graphs $F$ including all cycles. The proof is based on Friedgut's criteria (1999) for sharp thresholds, and on the recently developed con…
The Ramsey number $R_X(p,q)$ for a class of graphs $X$ is the minimum $n$ such that every graph in $X$ with at least $n$ vertices has either a clique of size $p$ or an independent set of size $q$. We say that Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if there is a constant $k$ such that $R_{X}(p,q) \leq k(p+q)$ for all $p,q$. In the present paper we conjecture that if $X$ is a hereditary class defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, then Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if and only if $X$ excludes a forest, a disjoint union of cliques and their complements. We prove the "only if" part of …
Let H_1, ..., H_k be graphs. The multicolor Ramsey number r(H_1,...,H_k) is the minimum integer r such that in every edge-coloring of K_r by k colors, there is a monochromatic copy of H_i in color i for some 1 <= i <= k. In this paper, we investigate the multicolor Ramsey number $r(K_{2,t},...,K_{2,t},K_m)$, determining the asymptotic behavior up to a polylogarithmic factor for almost all ranges of t and m. Several different constructions are used for the lower bounds, including the random graph and explicit graphs built from finite fields. A technique of Alon and Rödl using the probabilistic …
The cube graph Q_n is the skeleton of the n-dimensional cube. It is an n-regular graph on 2^n vertices. The Ramsey number r(Q_n, K_s) is the minimum N such that every graph of order N contains the cube graph Q_n or an independent set of order s. Burr and Erdos in 1983 asked whether the simple lower bound r(Q_n, K_s) >= (s-1)(2^n - 1)+1 is tight for s fixed and n sufficiently large. We make progress on this problem, obtaining the first upper bound which is within a constant factor of the lower bound.
For given graphs $G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_n$ and any integer $j$, the size of the multipartite Ramsey number $m_j(G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_n)$ is the smallest positive integer $t$ such that any $n$-coloring of the edges of $K_{j\times t}$ contains a monochromatic copy of $G_i$ in color $i$ for some $i$, $1 \leq i \leq n$, where $K_{j\times t}$ denotes the complete multipartite graph having $j$ classes with $t$ vertices per each class. In this paper we compute the size of the multipartite Ramsey number $m_j(K_{1,2}, P_4, nK_2)$ for any $j,n\geq 2$ and $m_j(nK_2,C_7)$, for any $j\leq4$ and $n\geq 2$.
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$ with $H\subseteq G$ we consider the anti-Ramsey function $AR(G,H)$ which is the maximum number of colors in any edge-coloring of $G$ so that every copy of $H$ receives the same color on at least one pair of edges. The classical Turán function for a graph $G$ and family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, written $ex(G,\mathcal{F})$, is defined as the maximum number of edges of a subgraph of $G$ not containing any member of $\mathcal{F}$. We show that there exists a constant $c>0$ so that $AR(K_n,K_{s,t})-ex(K_n,K_{s,t})<cn$ and $c$ depends only on $s$ and $t$, which implies $…
Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two given graphs. The Ramsey number $R(G_1,G_2)$ is the least integer $r$ such that for every graph $G$ on $r$ vertices, either $G$ contains a $G_1$ or $\overline{G}$ contains a $G_2$. We denote by $P_n$ the path on $n$ vertices and $W_m$ the wheel on $m+1$ vertices. Chen et al. and Zhang determined the values of $R(P_n,W_m)$ when $m\leq n+1$ and when $n+2\leq m\leq 2n$, respectively. In this paper we determine all the values of $R(P_n,W_m)$ for the left case $m\geq 2n+1$. Together with Chen et al's and Zhang's results, we give a complete solution to the problem of deter…
The bipartite Ramsey number $B(n_1,n_2,\ldots,n_t)$ is the least positive integer $b$ such that, any coloring of the edges of $K_{b,b}$ with $t$ colors will result in a monochromatic copy of $K_{n_i,n_i}$ in the $i-$th color, for some $i$, $1\leq i\leq t$. In this paper we obtain the exact values of bipartite Ramsey numbers $B(2,2,3)$. In particular, we prove the conjecture of Radziszowski at al. aobut $B(2,2,3)$ which was introduced in 2015. In fact we prov that $B(2,2,3)=17$.
Let $K_m^{(3)}$ denote the complete $3$-uniform hypergraph on $m$ vertices and $S_n^{(3)}$ the $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n+1$ vertices consisting of all $\binom{n}{2}$ edges incident to a given vertex. Whereas many hypergraph Ramsey numbers grow either at most polynomially or at least exponentially, we show that the off-diagonal Ramsey number $r(K_{4}^{(3)},S_n^{(3)})$ exhibits an unusual intermediate growth rate, namely, \[ 2^{c \log^2 n} \le r(K_{4}^{(3)},S_n^{(3)}) \le 2^{c' n^{2/3}\log n} \] for some positive constants $c$ and $c'$. The proof of these bounds brings in a novel Ramsey probl…
For two graphs $G$ and $H$, let $r(G,H)$ and $r_*(G,H)$ denote the Ramsey number and star-critical Ramsey number of $G$ versus $H$, respectively. In 1996, Li and Rousseau proved that $r(K_{m},F_{t,n})=tn(m-1)+1$ for $m\geq 3$ and sufficiently large $n$, where $F_{t,n}=K_{1}+nK_{t}$. Recently, Hao and Lin proved that $r(K_{3},F_{3,n})=6n+1$ for $n\geq 3$ and $r_{\ast}(K_{3},F_{3,n})=3n+3$ for $n\geq 4$. In this paper, we show that $r(K_{m}, sF_{t,n})=tn(m+s-2)+s$ for sufficiently large $n$ and, in particular, $r(K_{3}, sF_{t,n})=tn(s+1)+s$ for $t\in\{3,4\},n\geq t$ and $s\geq1$. We also show th…
Let $K_n$ denote the complete graph on $n$ vertices and $G, H$ be finite graphs. Consider a two-coloring of edges of $K_n$. When a copy of $G$ in the first color, red, or a copy of $H$ in the second color, blue is in $K_n$, we write $K_n\rightarrow (G,H)$. The Ramsey number $r(G, H)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $n$ such that $K_{n} \rightarrow (G, H)$. Star critical Ramsey $r_*(G, H)$ is defined as the largest value of $k$ such that $K_{r(G,H)-1} \sqcup K_{1,k} \rightarrow (G, H)$. In this paper, we find $r_*(C_n, K_m)$ for $m \geq 7$ and $n \geq (m-3)(m-1)$.
Online Ramsey game is played between Builder and Painter on an infinite board $K_{\mathbb N}$. In every round Builder selects an edge, then Painter colors it red or blue. Both know target graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$. Builder aims to create either a red copy of $H_1$ or a blue copy of $H_2$ in $K_{\mathbb N}$ as soon as possible, and Painter tries to prevent it. The online Ramsey number $\tilde{r}(H_1,H_2)$ is the minimum number of rounds such that the Builder wins. We study $\tilde{r}(C_k,C_n)$ where $k$ is fixed and $n$ is large. We show that $\tilde{r}(C_k,C_n)=2n+\mathcal O(k)$ for an absolute c…
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(G,H)$ is the minimum integer $N$ such that any coloring of the edges of $K_N$ in red or blue yields a red $G$ or a blue $H$. Let $v(G)$ be the number of vertices of $G$ and $χ(G)$ be the chromatic number of $G$. Let $s(G)$ denote the chromatic surplus of $G$, the cardinality of a minimum color class taken over all proper colorings of $G$ with $χ(G)$ colors. Burr showed that for a connected graph $G$ and a graph $H$ with $v(G)\geq s(H)$, $R(G,H) \geq (v(G)-1)(χ(H)-1)+s(H)$. A connected graph $G$ is called $H$-good if $R(G,H)=(v(G)-1)(χ(H)-1)+s(…
Let $G$, $H$ and $K$ represent three graphs without loops or parallel edges and $n$ represent an integer. Given any red blue coloring of the edges of $G$, we say that $K \rightarrow (G,H)$, if there exists red copy of $G$ in $K$ or a blue copy of $H$ in $K$. Let $K_n$ represent a complete graph on $n$ vertices, $C_n$ a cycle on $n$ vertices and $S_n=K_{1,n}$ a star on $n+1$ vertices. The Ramsey number $r(G, H)$ is defined as $\min\{n \mid K_n\rightarrow (G,H)\}$. Likewise, the star-critical Ramsey number $r_*(H, G)$ is defined $\min\{k \mid K_{r(G,H)-1} \sqcup K_{1,k} \rightarrow (H, G) \}$. W…
For two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ the Ramsey number $R(G_1,G_2)$ is the smallest integer $N$, such that for any graph on $N$ vertices either $G$ contains $G_1$ or $\overline{G}$ contains $G_2$. Let $S_n$ be a star of order $n$ and $W_m$ be a wheel of order $m+1$. In this paper, it is shown that $R(W_n,S_n)\leq{5n/2-1}$, where $n\geq{6}$ is even. It was proven a theorem which implies that $R(W_n,S_n)\geq{5n/2-2}$, where $n\geq{6}$ is even. Therefore we conclude that $R(W_n,S_n)=5n/2-2$ or $5n/2-1$, for $n\geq{6}$ and even.
Burr, Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp initiated the study of Ramsey numbers of trees versus odd cycles, proving that $R(T_n, C_m) = 2n - 1$ for all odd $m \ge 3$ and $n \ge 756m^{10}$, where $T_n$ is a tree with $n$ vertices and $C_m$ is an odd cycle of length $m$. They proposed to study the minimum positive integer $n_0(m)$ such that this result holds for all $n \ge n_0(m)$, as a function of $m$. In this paper, we show that $n_0(m)$ is at most linear. In particular, we prove that $R(T_n, C_m) = 2n - 1$ for all odd $m \ge 3$ and $n \ge 50m$. Combining this with a result of Faudree, Lawrenc…
For graphs G and H, let the induced Ramsey number IR(H,G) be the smallest number of vertices in a graph F such that any coloring of the edges of F in red and blue, there is either a red induced copy of H or a blue induced copy of G. In this note we consider the case when G=Sn is a star on n edges, for large n, and H is a fixed graph. We prove that (r-1)n < IR(H, Sn) < (r-1)(r-1)n + cn, for any c>0, sufficiently large n, and r denoting the chromatic number of H. The lower bound is asymptotically tight for any fixed bipartite H. The upper bound is attained up to a constant factor, for example by…
The generalized Ramsey number $R(G_1, G_2)$ is the smallest positive integer $N$ such that any red-blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ either contains a red copy of $G_1$ or a blue copy of $G_2$. Let $C_m$ denote a cycle of length $m$ and $W_n$ denote a wheel with $n+1$ vertices. In 2014, Zhang, Zhang and Chen determined many of the Ramsey numbers $R(C_{2k+1}, W_{n})$ of odd cycles versus larger wheels, leaving open the particular case where $n = 2j$ is even and $k<j<3k/2$. They conjectured that for these values of $j$ and $k$, $R(C_{2k+1}, W_{2j})=4j+1$. In 2015, Sanhueza-M…
In 1982, Harary introduced the concept of Ramsey achievement game on graphs. Given a graph $F$ with no isolated vertices. Consider the following game played on the complete graph $K_n$ by two players Alice and Bob. First, Alice colors one of the edges of $K_n$ blue, then Bob colors a different edge red, and so on. The first player who can complete the formation of $F$ in his color is the winner. The minimum $n$ for which Alice has a winning strategy is the achievement number of $F$, denoted by $a(F)$. If we replace $K_n$ in the game by the completed bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, we get the bipart…
For given simple graphs $G_1, G_2, \ldots , G_t$, the Ramsey number $R(G_1, G_2, \ldots, G_t)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that if the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ are partitioned into $t$ disjoint color classes giving $t$ graphs $H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_t$, then at least one $H_i$ has a subgraph isomorphic to $G_i$. In this paper, for positive integers $t_1,t_2,\ldots, t_s$ and $n_1,n_2,\ldots, n_c$ the Ramsey number $R(S_{t_1}, S_{t_2},\ldots ,S_{t_s}, n_1K_2,n_2K_2,\ldots,n_cK_2)$ is computed, where $nK_2$ denotes a matching (stripe) of size $n$, i.e., $n$ pairwise disjoint edge…
The 3-uniform tight cycle $C_s^3$ has vertex set $ Z_s$ and edge set $\{\{i, i+1, i+2\}: i \in Z_s\}$. We prove that for every $s \not\equiv 0$ (mod 3) and $s \ge 16$ or $s \in \{8,11,14\}$ there is a $c_s>0$ such that the 3-uniform hypergraph Ramsey number $$r(C_s^3, K_n^3)< 2^{c_s n \log n}$$ This answers in strong form a question of the author and Rödl who asked for an upper bound of the form $2^{n^{1+ε_s}}$ for each fixed $s \ge 4$, where $ε_s \rightarrow 0$ as $s \rightarrow \infty$ and $n$ is sufficiently large. The result is nearly tight as the lower bound is known to be exponential in …
For two graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $r(G,H)$ is the smallest positive integer $r$, such that any red/blue coloring of the edges of the graph $K_r$ contains either a red subgraph that is isomorphic to $G$ or a blue subgraph that is isomorphic to $H$. Let $S_k=K_{1,k}$ be a star of order $k+1$ and $K_n\sqcup S_k$ be a graph obtained from $K_n$ by adding a new vertex $v$ and joining $v$ to $k$ vertices of $K_n$. The star-critical Ramsey number $r_*(G,H)$ is the smallest positive integer $k$ such that any red/blue coloring of the edges of graph $K_{r-1}\sqcup S_k$ contains either a red s…
We call a graph H Ramsey-unsaturated if there is an edge in the complement of H such that the Ramsey number r(H) of H does not change upon adding it to H. This notion was introduced by Balister, Lehel and Schelp who also proved that cycles (except for $C_4$) are Ramsey-unsaturated, and conjectured that, moreover, one may add any chord without changing the Ramsey number of the cycle $C_n$, unless n is even and adding the chord creates an odd cycle. We prove this conjecture for large cycles by showing a stronger statement: If a graph H is obtained by adding a linear number of chords to a cycle $…
