Let $C_{m} : y^{2} = x^{3} - m^{2}x +p^{2}q^{2}$ be a family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, where $m$ is a positive integer and $p, q$ are distinct odd primes. We study the torsion part and the rank of $C_m(\mathbb{Q})$. More specifically, we prove that the torsion subgroup of $C_{m}(\mathbb{Q})$ is trivial and the $\mathbb{Q}$-rank of this family is at least $2$, whenever $m \not \equiv 0 \pmod 4$ and $m \equiv 2 \pmod {64}$ with neither $p$ nor $q$ divides $m$.
While there has been considerable interest in the problem of finding elliptic curves of high rank over $\mathbb{Q}$, very few parametrized families of elliptic curves of generic rank $\geq 8$ have been published. In this paper we use solutions of certain symmetric diophantine systems to construct several parametrized families of elliptic curves with their generic ranks ranging from at least 8 to at least 12. Specific numerical values of the parameters yield elliptic curves with quite large coefficients and we could therefore determine the precise rank only in a few cases where the rank of the …
We prove that, when all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ are ordered by naive height, a positive proportion have both algebraic and analytic rank one. It follows that the average rank and the average analytic rank of elliptic curves are both strictly positive.
We present a heuristic that suggests that ranks of elliptic curves over the rationals are bounded. In fact, it suggests that there are only finitely many elliptic curves of rank greater than 21. Our heuristic is based on modeling the ranks and Shafarevich-Tate groups of elliptic curves simultaneously, and relies on a theorem counting alternating integer matrices of specified rank. We also discuss analogues for elliptic curves over other global fields.
In this paper, under GRH for elliptic $L$-functions, we give an upper bound for the probability for an elliptic curve with analytic rank $\leq a$ for $a \geq 11$, and also give an upper bound of $n$-th moments of analytic ranks of elliptic curves. These are applications of counting elliptic curves with local conditions, for example, having good reduction at $p$.
We show that average analytic rank of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion $G$ is bounded for every torsion group $G$ under GRH for elliptic curve $L$-functions.
In this paper the family of elliptic curves over \Q given by the equation E_{p}: Y^2=(X-p)^3+X^3+(X+p)^3 where p is a prime number, is studied. It is shown that the maximal rank of the elliptic curves is at most 3 and some conditions under which we have rank(E_p(\Q))=0 or rank(E_p(\Q))=1 or rank(E_p(\Q))>=2 are given. Moreover It is shown that in the family there are elliptic curves with rank 0,1,2 and 3.
We describe a simple, but effective, method for deriving families of elliptic curves, with high rank, all of whose members have the same torsion subgroup structure.
In this paper, $p$ and $q$ are two different odd primes. First, We construct the congruent elliptic curves corresponding to $p$, $2p$, $pq$, and $2pq,$ then, in the cases of congruent numbers, we determine the rank of the corresponding congruent elliptic curves.
In this paper, we construct an infinite family of elliptic curves whose rank is exactly two and the torsion subgroup is a cyclic group of order two or three, under the parity conjecture.
Extending the idea of \cite{dab2} and using the 2-descent method, we provide three general families of elliptic curves over Q such that a positive proportion of prime-twists of such elliptic curves have rank zero simultaneously.
We establish a conditional equivalence between quantitative unboundedness of the analytic rank of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ and the existence of highly biased elliptic curve prime number races. We show that conditionally on a Riemann Hypothesis and on a hypothesis on the multiplicity of the zeros of $L(E,s)$, large analytic ranks translate into an extreme Chebyshev bias. Conversely, we show under a certain linear independence hypothesis on zeros of $L(E,s)$ that if highly biased elliptic curve prime number races do exist, then the Riemann Hypothesis holds for infinitely many elliptic cu…
The Thue-Siegel method is used to obtain an upper bound for the number of primitive integral solutions to a family of quartic Thue's inequalities. This will provide an upper bound for the number of integer points on a family of elliptic curves with j-invariant equal to 1728.
We investigate $\mathbb{Q}$-ranks of the elliptic curve $E_t$: $y^2+txy=x^3+tx^2-x+1$ where $t$ is a rational parameter. We prove that for infinitely many values of $t$ the rank of $E_t(\mathbb{Q})$ is at least 4.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a new family of elliptic curves in the form of $y^2=x(x-a^2)(x-b^2)$ that have positive ranks. We first generate a list of pythagorean triples $(a,b,c)$ and then construct this family of elliptic curves. It turn out that this new family have positive ranks and search for the upper bound for their ranks.
We conjecture that, for a fixed prime $p$, rational elliptic curves with higher rank tend to have more points mod $p$. We show that there is an analogous bias for modular forms with respect to root numbers, and conjecture that the order of the rank bias for elliptic curves is greater than that of the root number bias for modular forms.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then, we show that the average analytic rank of $E$ over cyclic extensions of degree $l$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $l$ a prime not equal to $2$, is at most $2+r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$, where $r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$ is the analytic rank of the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. This bound is independent of the degree $l$ Also, we also obtain some average analytic rank results over $S_d$-fields.
In this paper, we present several methods for construction of elliptic curves with large torsion group and positive rank over number fields of small degree. We also discuss potential applications of such curves in the elliptic curve factorization method (ECM).
We give upper bounds for the number of rational elliptic surfaces in some families having positive rank, obtaining in particular that these form a subset of density zero. This confirms Cowan's conjecture (arXiv:2009.08622v2) in the case $m,n\leq2$.
Based on an equation for the rank of an elliptic surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ which appears in the work of Nagao, Rosen, and Silverman, we conjecture that 100% of elliptic surfaces have rank $0$ when ordered by the size of the coefficients of their Weierstrass equations, and present a probabilistic heuristic to justify this conjecture. We then discuss how it would follow from either understanding of certain $L$-functions, or from understanding of the local behaviour of the surfaces. Finally, we make a conjecture about ranks of elliptic surfaces over finite fields, and highlight some experimental …
If $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over a quadratic field $K$, and the $j$-invariant of $E$ is not 0 or 1728, then $E(\mathbf{Q}^{\ab})$ has infinite rank. If $E$ is an elliptic curve in Legendre form, $y^2 = x(x-1)(x-λ)$, where $\mathbf{Q}(λ)$ is a cubic field, then $E(K \mathbf{Q}^{\ab})$ has infinite rank. If $λ\in K$ has a minimal polynomial $P(x)$ of degree 4 and $v^2 = P(u)$ is an elliptic curve of positive rank over $\bbq$, we prove that $y^2 = x(x-1)(x-λ)$ has infinite rank over $K\bbq^{\ab}$.
We describe a method for bounding the rank of an elliptic curve under the assumptions of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture and the generalized Riemann hypothesis. As an example, we compute, under these conjectures, exact upper bounds for curves which are known to have rank at least as large as 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24. For the known curve of rank at least 28, we get a bound of 30.
Using the theory of Diophantine m-tuples, i.e. sets with the property that the product of its any two distinct elements increased by 1 is a perfect square, we construct an elliptic curve over Q(t) of rank at least 4 with three non-trivial torsion points. By specialization, we obtain an example of elliptic curve over Q with torsion group Z/2Z * Z/2Z whose rank is equal 7.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve with good reduction at a fixed odd prime $p$ and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field where $p$ splits. We give a growth estimate for the Mordell-Weil rank of $E$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$.
If an integer $n$ is written as a sum of two biquadrates in two different ways, then the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3-nx$ has rank $\geq 3$. If moreover $n$ is odd and the parity conjecture is true, then it has even rank $\geq 4$. Finally, some examples of ranks equal to 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, are also obtained.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a new family of elliptic curves with positive ranks. These elliptic curves have been constructed with certain rational numbers, namely a, b, and c as sides of Heron triangles having rational areas $k$. It turned out that the torsion groups of this family are of the form $\frac{\Bbb{Z}}{2\Bbb{Z}}\times \frac{\Bbb{Z}}{2\Bbb{Z}}$ and also the rank is positive.
The parity of the analytic rank of an elliptic curve is given by the root number in the functional equation L(E,s). Fixing an elliptic curve over any number field and considering the family of its quadratic twists, it is natural to ask what the average analytic rank in this family is. A lower bound on this number is given by the average root number. In this paper, we investigate the root number in such families and derive an asymptotic formula for the proportion of curves in the family that have even rank. Our results are then used to support a conjecture about the average analytic rank in thi…
There are 26 possibilities for the torsion group of elliptic curves defined over quadratic number fields. We present examples of high rank elliptic curves with given torsion group which give the current records for most of the torsion groups. In particular, we show that for each possible torsion group, except maybe for Z/15Z, there exist an elliptic curve over some quadratic field with this torsion group and with rank >= 2.
We describe some experiments that show a connection between elliptic curves of high rank and the Riemann zeta function on the one line. We also discuss a couple of statistics involving $L$-functions where the zeta function on the one line plays a prominent role.
This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field K with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having…
Under a hypothesis which is slightly stronger than the Riemann Hypothesis for elliptic curve $L$-functions, we show that both the average analytic rank and the average algebraic rank of elliptic curves in families of quadratic twists are exactly $\frac 12$. As a corollary we obtain that under this last hypothesis, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture holds for almost all curves in our family, and that asymptotically one half of these curves have algebraic rank $0$, and the remaining half $1$. We also prove an analogous result in the family of all elliptic curves. A way to interpret our res…

For a given group $G$ and an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a number field $K$, I discuss the problem of finding $G$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank. I prove the following theorem, extending a result of Fearnley, Kisilevsky, and Kuwata: Let $n = 3,4,$ or $6$. If $K$ contains its $n^{th}$-roots of unity then, for any elliptic curve $E$ over $K$, there are infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank.
Let $k$ denote an algebraically closed field. We revisit a construction of the author of families of elliptic curves over the rational function field $k(t)$. Combining a combinatorial analysis with a rank formula of Ulmer we prove that, for all but finitely many families of these curves, the Mordell-Weil groups over $k(t^{1/d})$ have rank zero, as $d$ ranges over positive integers prime to the characteristic of $k$.
A weaker form of a 1979 conjecture of Goldfeld states that for every elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, a positive proportion of its quadratic twists $E^{(d)}$ have rank 1. Using tools from Galois cohomology, we give criteria on E and d which force a positive proportion of the quadratic twists of E to have 3-Selmer rank 1 and global root number -1. We then give four nonisomorphic infinite families of elliptic curves $E_{m, n}$ which satisfy these criteria. Conditional on the rank part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this verifies the aforementioned conjecture for infinitely many ellip…
Rational Diophantine triples, i.e. rationals a,b,c with the property that ab+1, ac+1, bc+1 are perfect squares, are often used in construction of elliptic curves with high rank. In this paper, we consider the opposite problem and ask how small can be the rank of elliptic curves induced by rational Diophantine triples. It is easy to find rational Diophantine triples with elements with mixed signs which induce elliptic curves with rank 0. However, the problem of finding such examples of rational Diophantine triples with positive elements is much more challenging, and we will provide the first su…
Let n be a positive integer and t a non-zero integer. We consider the elliptic curve over Q given by E : y 2 = x 3 + tx 2 -- n 2 (t + 3n 2)x + n 6. It is a special case of an elliptic surface studied recently by Bettin, David and Delaunay [2] and it generalizes Washington's family. The point (0, n 3) belongs to E(Q) and we obtain some results about its nondivisibility in E(Q). Our work extends to this two-parameter family of elliptic curves a previous study of Duquesne (mainly stated for n = 1 and t > 0).
We give an infinite family of congruent number elliptic curves, each with rank at least two, which are related to integral solutions of $m^2=n^2+nl+l^2$.
For an elliptic curve E over a number field K, we prove that the algebraic rank of E goes up in infinitely many extensions of K obtained by adjoining a cube root of an element of K. As an example, we briefly discuss E=X_1(11) over Q, and how the result relates to Iwasawa theory.
In this paper, we construct a family of elliptic curves with rank $\geq 5$. To do this, we use the Heron formula for a triple $(A^2, B^2, C^2)$ which are not necessarily the three sides of a triangle. It turns out that as parameters of a family of elliptic curves, these three positive integers $A$, $B$, and $C$, along with the extra parameter $D$ satisfy the quartic Diophantine equation $A^4+D^4=2(B^4+D^4)$.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field K. Michael Larsen conjectured that for any finitely generated subgroup G of Gal(\bar K/K), the Mordell-Weil rank of E is unbounded in number fields fixed by G. We prove that the conjecture holds over K=Q for both the analytic rank and the p-infinity Selmer rank of E for every odd prime p. For arbitrary E/K, we show that Larsen's conjecture follows from the standard conjectures for ranks of elliptic curves, provided K has a real place or E has non-integral j-invariant.
Given any positive integer n, it is well known that there always exist triangles with rational sides a, b and c such that the area of the triangle is n. Assuming finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group, we first construct a family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves of rank exactly 1 from Heron triangles of a certain type. We also explicitly produce a separate family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves with 2-Selmer rank lying between 1 and 3.
We consider partial torsion fields (fields generated by a root of a division polynomial) for elliptic curves. By analysing the reduction properties of elliptic curves, and applying the Montes Algorithm, we obtain information about the ring of integers. In particular, for the partial $3$-torsion fields for a certain one-parameter family of non-CM elliptic curves, we describe a power basis. As a result, we show that the one-parameter family of quartic $S_4$ fields given by $T^4 - 6T^2 - αT - 3$ for $α\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $α\pm 8$ are squarefree, are monogenic.
We study elliptic surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$ with coefficients of a Weierstrass model being polynomials in $\mathbb{Q}[T]$ with degree at most 2. We derive an explicit expression for their rank over $\mathbb{Q}(T)$ depending on the factorization and other simple properties of certain polynomials. Finally, we give sharp estimates for the ranks of the considered families and we present several applications, among which there are lists of rational points, generic families with maximal rank and generalizations of former results.
For a non-constant elliptic surface over $\mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, it is a result of Silverman that the Mordell--Weil rank of the fibres is at least the rank of the group of sections, up to finitely many fibres. If the elliptic surface is non-isotrivial one expects that this bound is an equality for infinitely many fibres, although no example is known unconditionally. Under the Bunyakovsky conjecture, such an example has been constructed by Neumann and Setzer. In this note we show that the Legendre elliptic surface has the desired property, conditional on the existence of infin…
A rational Diophantine triple is a set of three nonzero rational a,b,c with the property that ab+1, ac+1, bc+1 are perfect squares. We say that the elliptic curve y^2 = (ax+1)(bx+1)(cx+1) is induced by the triple {a,b,c}. In this paper, we describe a new method for construction of elliptic curves over Q with reasonably high rank based on a parametrization of rational Diophantine triples. In particular, we construct an elliptic curve induced by a rational Diophantine triple with rank equal to 12, and an infinite family of such curves with rank >= 7, which are both the current records for that k…
We study the $2$-Selmer ranks of elliptic curves. We prove that for an arbitrary elliptic curve $E$ over an arbitrary number field $K$, if the set $A_E$ of 2-Selmer ranks of quadratic twists of $E$ contains an integer $c$, it contains all integers larger than $c$ and having the same parity as $c$. We also find sufficient conditions on $A_E$ such that $A_E$ is equal to $\Z_{\ge t_E}$ for some number $t_E$. When all points in $E[2]$ are rational, we give an upper bound for $t_E$.
