Let n be a positive integer and t a non-zero integer. We consider the elliptic curve over Q given by E : y 2 = x 3 + tx 2 -- n 2 (t + 3n 2)x + n 6. It is a special case of an elliptic surface studied recently by Bettin, David and Delaunay [2] and it generalizes Washington's family. The point (0, n 3) belongs to E(Q) and we obtain some results about its nondivisibility in E(Q). Our work extends to this two-parameter family of elliptic curves a previous study of Duquesne (mainly stated for n = 1 and t > 0).
For an abelian variety A over a number field k we discuss the maximal divisibile subgroup of H^1(k,A) and its intersection with the subgroup Sha(A/k). The results are most complete for elliptic curves over Q.
We construct a new infinite family of pairs of imaginary cyclic fields of degree $(p-1)/2$ explicitly with both class numbers divisible by a given prime number $p$. For the proof, we use the fundamental unit of $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{p})$, certain units which are roots of a parametric quartic polynomial, the Kummer theory, the Gauss sums and the Jacobi sums, linear recurrence sequences, a consequence of the Weil conjecture and a result of Lenstra which is a generalization of Artin conjecture on primitive roots. Our result is based on the famous Scholz' results on pairs of quadratic fields $\mathbb Q…
For every prime power p^n with p = 2 or 3 and n > 1 we give an example of an elliptic curve over Q containing a rational point which is locally divisible by p^n but is not divisible by p^n. For these same prime powers we construct examples showing that the analogous local-global principle for divisibility in the Weil-Châtelet group can also fail.
We study Tamagawa numbers of elliptic curves with torsion $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}/14\mathbb{Z}$ over cubic fields and of elliptic curves with an $n-$isogeny over $\mathbb{Q}$, for $n\in\{6,8,10,12,14,16,17,18,19,37,43,67,163\}$. Bruin and Najman proved that every elliptic curve with torsion $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}/14\mathbb{Z}$ over a cubic field is a base change of an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We find that Tamagawa numbers of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with torsion $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}/14\mathbb{Z}$ over a cu…
Let D = (D_n)_{n\ge1} be an elliptic divisibility sequence. We study the set S(D) of indices n satisfying n | D_n. In particular, given an index n in S(D), we explain how to construct elements nd in S(D), where d is either a prime divisor of D_n, or d is the product of the primes in an aliquot cycle for D. We also give bounds for the exceptional indices that are not constructed in this way.
We show that every elliptic curve over a finite field of odd characteristic whose number of rational points is divisible by 4 is isogenous to an elliptic curve in Legendre form, with the sole exception of a minimal respectively maximal elliptic curve. We also collect some results concerning the supersingular Legendre parameters.
p-jets of finite flat maps of schemes are generally neither finite nor flat. This phenomenon can be seen already in the case of p-isogenies of group schemes. However, for p-divisible groups, this pathology tends to disappear mod p "in the limit". We illustrate this in the case of the p-divisible groups of elliptic curves and of formal groups of finite height; in the case of ordinary elliptic curves the structure in the limit depends on the Serre-Tate parameter.
We study Galois action on $\Ext^1(E(\bar \Q),\Z^2)$ and interpret our results as partially showing that the notion of a path on a complex elliptic curve $E$ can be characterised algebraically. The proofs show that our results are just concise reformulations of Kummer theory for $E$ as well as the description of Galois action on the Tate module. Namely, we prove (a),(b) below by showing they are equivalent to (c) which is well-known: (a) Absolute Galois group acts transitively on the set of uniquely divisible abelian \EndE-module extensions of $E(\bar\Q)$ of algebraic points of an elliptic curv…
It is shown that there are finitely many perfect powers in an elliptic divisibility sequence whose first term is divisible by 2 or 3. For Mordell curves the same conclusion is shown to hold if the first term is greater than 1. Examples of Mordell curves and families of congruent number curves are given with corresponding elliptic divisibility sequences having no perfect power terms. The proofs combine primitive divisor results with modular methods for Diophantine equations.
A number of authors have proven explicit versions of Lehmer's conjecture for polynomials whose coefficients are all congruent to 1 modulo m. We prove a similar result for polynomials f(X) that are divisible in (Z/mZ)[X] by a polynomial of the form 1+X+...+X^n for some n > ε*deg(f). We also formulate and prove an analogous statement for elliptic curves.
We prove that the graded ring of modular forms of weight divisible by 3 is naturally isomorphic to a certain log canonical ring of the corresponding elliptic modular surface.
Let $E / \mathbb{Q}$ and $A / \mathbb{Q}$ be elliptic curves. We can construct modular points derived from $A$ via the modular parametrisation of $E$. With certain assumptions we can show that these points are of infinite order and are not divisible by a prime $p$. In particular, using Kolyvagin's construction of derivative classes, we can find elements in certain Shafarevich-Tate groups of order $p^{n}$.
We consider the primes which divide the denominator of the x-coordinate of a sequence of rational points on an elliptic curve. It is expected that for every sufficiently large value of the index, each term should be divisible by a primitive prime divisor, one that has not appeared in any earlier term. Proofs of this are known in only a few cases. Weaker results in the general direction are given, using a strong form of Siegel's Theorem and some congruence arguments. Our main result is applied to the study of prime divisors of Somos sequences.
Let $K$ be a global field and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with a $K$-rational point of prime order $p$. In this paper we are interested in how often the (global) Tamagawa number $c(E/K)$ of $E/K$ is divisible by $p$. This is a natural question to consider in view of the fact that the fraction $c(E/K)/ |E(K)_{\text{tors}}|$ appears in the second part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. We focus on elliptic curves defined over global fields, but we also prove a result for higher dimensional abelian varieties defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.
Watkins' conjecture asserts that for a rational elliptic curve $E$ the degree of the modular parametrization is divisible by $2^r$, where $r$ is the rank of $E$. In this paper we prove that if the modular degree is odd then $E$ has rank $0$. Moreover, we prove that the conjecture holds for all rank two rational elliptic curves of prime conductor and positive discriminant.
Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we design a deterministic algorithm that, given a prime p and positive integer m=o(sqrt(p)/(log p)^4), outputs an elliptic curve E over the finite field F_p for which the cardinality of E(F_p) is divisible by m. The running time of the algorithm is mp^(1/2+o(1)), and this leads to more efficient constructions of rational functions over F_p whose image is small relative to p. We also give an unconditional version of the algorithm that works for almost all primes p, and give a probabilistic algorithm with subexponential time complexity.
The Thue-Siegel method is used to obtain an upper bound for the number of primitive integral solutions to a family of quartic Thue's inequalities. This will provide an upper bound for the number of integer points on a family of elliptic curves with j-invariant equal to 1728.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a new family of elliptic curves in the form of $y^2=x(x-a^2)(x-b^2)$ that have positive ranks. We first generate a list of pythagorean triples $(a,b,c)$ and then construct this family of elliptic curves. It turn out that this new family have positive ranks and search for the upper bound for their ranks.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a new family of elliptic curves with positive ranks. These elliptic curves have been constructed with certain rational numbers, namely a, b, and c as sides of Heron triangles having rational areas $k$. It turned out that the torsion groups of this family are of the form $\frac{\Bbb{Z}}{2\Bbb{Z}}\times \frac{\Bbb{Z}}{2\Bbb{Z}}$ and also the rank is positive.
We explicitly construct and investigate a number of examples of $\mathbb{Z}/p^r$-equivariant formal group laws and complex-oriented spectra, including those coming from elliptic curves and $p$-divisible groups, as well as some other related examples.
In this paper, we construct a family of elliptic curves with rank $\geq 5$. To do this, we use the Heron formula for a triple $(A^2, B^2, C^2)$ which are not necessarily the three sides of a triangle. It turns out that as parameters of a family of elliptic curves, these three positive integers $A$, $B$, and $C$, along with the extra parameter $D$ satisfy the quartic Diophantine equation $A^4+D^4=2(B^4+D^4)$.
Given any positive integer n, it is well known that there always exist triangles with rational sides a, b and c such that the area of the triangle is n. Assuming finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group, we first construct a family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves of rank exactly 1 from Heron triangles of a certain type. We also explicitly produce a separate family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves with 2-Selmer rank lying between 1 and 3.
We investigate $\mathbb{Q}$-ranks of the elliptic curve $E_t$: $y^2+txy=x^3+tx^2-x+1$ where $t$ is a rational parameter. We prove that for infinitely many values of $t$ the rank of $E_t(\mathbb{Q})$ is at least 4.
We consider partial torsion fields (fields generated by a root of a division polynomial) for elliptic curves. By analysing the reduction properties of elliptic curves, and applying the Montes Algorithm, we obtain information about the ring of integers. In particular, for the partial $3$-torsion fields for a certain one-parameter family of non-CM elliptic curves, we describe a power basis. As a result, we show that the one-parameter family of quartic $S_4$ fields given by $T^4 - 6T^2 - αT - 3$ for $α\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $α\pm 8$ are squarefree, are monogenic.
Let R be a complete rank-1 valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0,p), and let K be its field of fractions. A g-dimensional truncated Barsotti-Tate group G of level n over R is said to have a level-n canonical subgroup if there is a K-subgroup of G\tensor_R K with geometric structure (\Z/p^n\Z)^g consisting of points "closest to zero". We give a nontrivial condition on the Hasse invariant of G that guarantees the existence of the canonical subgroup, analogous to a result of Katz and Lubin for elliptic curves. The bound is independent of the height and dimension of G.
For any number field K with a complex place, we present an infinite family of elliptic curves defined over K such that $dim \mathbb{F}_2 Sel_2(E^F/K) \ge dim \mathbb{F}_2 E^F(K)[2] + r_2$ for every quadratic twist E^F of every curve E in this family, where r_2 is the number of complex places of K. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture appearing in work of Mazur and Rubin.
For an elliptic curve $E$ over any field $K$, the Weil pairing $e_n$ is a bilinear map on $n$-torsion. For $K$ of characteristic $p>0$, the map $e_n$ is degenerate if and only if $n$ is divisible by $p$. In this paper, we consider $E$ over the dual numbers $K[ε]$ and define a non-degenerate ``Weil pairing on $p$-torsion" which shares many of the same properties of the Weil pairing. We also show that the discrete logarithm attacks on $p$-torsion subgroups of Semaev and Rück may be viewed as Weil-pairing-based attacks, just like the MOV attack. Finally, we describe an attack on the discrete loga…
We generalise the Siegel-Voloch theorem about S-integral points on elliptic curves as follows: let K/F denote a global function field over a finite field F of characteristic p>3, let S denote a finite set of places of K and let E/K denote a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over K with j-invariant a p^s power but not p^(s+1) power in K. Fix a non-constant function f in K(E) with a pole of order N>0 at the zero element of E. We prove that there are only finitely many rational points P in E(K) such that for any valuation outside S for which f(P) is negative, that valuation of f(P) is divisible by so…
Let $C_{m} : y^{2} = x^{3} - m^{2}x +p^{2}q^{2}$ be a family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, where $m$ is a positive integer and $p, q$ are distinct odd primes. We study the torsion part and the rank of $C_m(\mathbb{Q})$. More specifically, we prove that the torsion subgroup of $C_{m}(\mathbb{Q})$ is trivial and the $\mathbb{Q}$-rank of this family is at least $2$, whenever $m \not \equiv 0 \pmod 4$ and $m \equiv 2 \pmod {64}$ with neither $p$ nor $q$ divides $m$.
Watkins conjectured that for an elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ of Mordell-Weil rank $r$, the modular degree of $E$ is divisible by $2^r$. If $E$ has non-trivial rational $2$-torsion, we prove the conjecture for all the quadratic twists of $E$ by squarefree integers with sufficiently many prime factors.
In this paper, we study a certain Artin--Schreier family of elliptic curves over the function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We prove an asymptotic estimate on the size of the special value of their $L$-function in terms of the degree of their conductor; loosely speaking, we show that the special values are "asymptotically as large as possible". We also provide an explicit expression for the $L$-function of the elliptic curves in the family. The proof of the main result uses this expression and a detailed study of the distribution of some character sums related to Kloosterman sums. Via the BSD conje…
This work is a sequel of a previous work of one of the authors (Y.Ô), which treated certain congruence relation between an elliptic Gauss sum and a coefficient of power series expansion at the origin of the lemniscate sine function. We extend the previous result (in \cite{O}) which concerned only for non-vanishing elliptic Gauss sums. We give new congruence relations between power series coefficients of the lemniscate cosine function, which hold if and only if the corresponding elliptic Gauss sum vanishes.
This note gives an explicit example of transcendental Brauer-Manin obstruction to weak approximation. It has two features which the only previously known example of such obstruction did not have: the class in the Brauer group which is responsible for the obstruction is divisible, and the underlying algebraic variety is an elliptic surface (a K3 surface).
In recent work, Bhargava and Shankar have shown that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ is exactly $3$, and Bhargava and Ho have shown that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group in the family of elliptic curves with a marked point is exactly $6$. In contrast to these results, we show that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group in the family of elliptic curves with a two-torsion point is unbounded. In particular, the existence of a two-torsion point implies the existence of rational isogeny. A fundamental quantity attached to a pair of isogenous…
For every elliptic curve $E$ which has complex multiplication (CM) and is defined over a number field $F$ containing the CM field $K$, we prove that the family of $p^{\infty}$-division fields of $E$, with $p \in \mathbb{N}$ prime, becomes linearly disjoint over $F$ after removing an explicit finite subfamily of fields. We then give a necessary condition for this finite subfamily to be entangled over $F$, which is always met when $F = K$. In this case, and under the further assumption that the elliptic curve $E$ is obtained as a base-change from $\mathbb{Q}$, we describe in detail the entanglem…
Consider a rational point on an elliptic curve under an isogeny. Suppose that the action of Galois partitions the set of its pre-images into n orbits. It is shown that all such points above a certain height have their denominator divisible by at least n distinct primes. This generalizes Siegel's theorem and more recent results of Everest et al. For multiplication by a prime l, it is shown that if n>1 then either the point is l times a rational point or the elliptic curve emits a rational l-isogeny.
A prime number $p$ is said to be irregular if it divides the class number of the $p$-th cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{p}) = \mathbb{Q}(\mathbb{G}_m[p])$. In this paper, we study its elliptic analogue for the division fields of an elliptic curve. More precisely, for a prime number $p \geq 5$ and a positive integer $n$, we study the $p$-divisibility of the class number of the $p^{n}$-division field $\mathbb{Q}(E[p^{n}])$ of an elliptic curve $E$ of the form $y^{2} = x^{3}-(s^{4}+t^{2})x$. In particular, we construct a certain infinite subfamily consisting of curves with novel properties that t…
The parity of the analytic rank of an elliptic curve is given by the root number in the functional equation L(E,s). Fixing an elliptic curve over any number field and considering the family of its quadratic twists, it is natural to ask what the average analytic rank in this family is. A lower bound on this number is given by the average root number. In this paper, we investigate the root number in such families and derive an asymptotic formula for the proportion of curves in the family that have even rank. Our results are then used to support a conjecture about the average analytic rank in thi…
We make conjectures on the moments of the central values of the family of all elliptic curves and on the moments of the first derivative of the central values of a large family of positive rank curves. In both cases the order of magnitude is the same as that of the moments of the central values of an orthogonal family of L-functions. Notably, we predict that the critical values of all rank 1 elliptic curves is logarithmically larger than the rank 1 curves in the positive rank family. Furthermore, as arithmetical applications we make a conjecture on the distribution of a_p's amongst all rank 2 …
In this short note, we shall construct a certain topological family which contains all elliptic curves over Q and, as an application, show that this family provides some geometric interpretations of the Hasse-Weil L-function of an elliptic curve over Q whose Mordell-Weil group is of rank $\leq1$.
Under a hypothesis which is slightly stronger than the Riemann Hypothesis for elliptic curve $L$-functions, we show that both the average analytic rank and the average algebraic rank of elliptic curves in families of quadratic twists are exactly $\frac 12$. As a corollary we obtain that under this last hypothesis, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture holds for almost all curves in our family, and that asymptotically one half of these curves have algebraic rank $0$, and the remaining half $1$. We also prove an analogous result in the family of all elliptic curves. A way to interpret our res…
We study elliptic curves of the form $x^3+y^3=2p$ and $x^3+y^3=2p^2$ where $p$ is any odd prime satisfying $p\equiv 2\bmod 9$ or $p\equiv 5\bmod 9$. We first show that the $3$-part of the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture holds for these curves. Then we relate their $2$-Selmer group to the $2$-rank of the ideal class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[3]{p})$ to obtain some examples of elliptic curves with rank one and non-trivial $2$-part of the Tate-Shafarevich group.
In this article, we discuss Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $p$-adic families of elliptic modular cuspforms. After the overview on the situation of the ordinary case of Hida family, we will introduce a Coleman map for Coleman family for the non-ordinary case (Coleman family) which was obtained as a joint work with Filippo Nuccio [NO16] and we give some results on Iwasawa Theory for Coleman families as applications of . First, we give a construction of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function for a Coleman family thanks to the ingredients given in [NO16] (Theorem 5.1). Combining this result and Coleman…
Let $n>1$ be an integer such that $X_{0}\!\left( n\right) $ has genus $0$, and let $K$ be a field of characteristic $0$ or relatively prime to $6n$. In this article, we explicitly classify the isogeny graphs of all rational elliptic curves that admit a non-trivial isogeny over $\mathbb{Q}$. We achieve this by introducing $56$ parameterized families of elliptic curves $\mathcal{C}_{n,i}(t,d)$ defined over $K(t,d)$, which have the following two properties for a fixed $n$: the elliptic curves $\mathcal{C}_{n,i}(t,d)$ are isogenous over $K(t,d)$, and there are integers $k_{1}$ and $k_{2}$ such tha…
We fix an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ and consider the family $\{E\otimesχ_D\}$ of $E$ twisted by quadratic Dirichlet characters. The one-level density of their $L$-functions is shown to follow orthogonal symmetry for test functions with Fourier transform supported inside $(-1,1)$. As an application, we obtain an upper bound of 3/2 on the average analytic rank. By splitting the family according to the sign of the functional equation, we obtain that at least $12.5\%$ of the family have rank zero, and at least $37.5\%$ have rank one. The Katz and Sarnak philosophy predicts that those perc…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of odd characteristic and $K= \mathbb{F}_q(t)$. For any integer $d\geq 2$ coprime to $q$, consider the elliptic curve $E_d$ over $K$ defined by $y^2=x(x^2+t^{2d} x-4t^{2d})$. We show that the rank of the Mordell--Weil group $E_d(K)$ is unbounded as $d$ varies. The curve $E_d$ satisfies the BSD conjecture, so that its rank equals the order of vanishing of its $L$-function at the central point. We provide an explicit expression for the $L$-function of $E_d$, and use it to study this order of vanishing in terms of $d$.
Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic $p$. Question: Does every twisted form of $μ_p$ over $k$ occur as subgroup scheme of an elliptic curve over $k$? We show that this is true for most finite fields, for local fields and for fields of characteristic $p\leq11$. However, it is false in general for fields of characteristic $p\geq13$, which implies that there are also $p$-divisible and formal groups of height one over such fields that do not arise from elliptic curves. It also implies that the Hasse invariant does not obey the Hasse principle. Moreover, we also analyse twisted forms of $p…
We prove that the family $\mathcal{I}_{F_0}$ of elliptic curves over number fields that are geometrically isogenous to an elliptic curve with $F_0$-rational $j$-invariant is typically bounded in torsion. Under an additional uniformity assumption, we also prove that the family $\mathcal{I}_{d_0}$ of elliptic curves over number fields that are geometrically isogenous to an elliptic curve with degree $d_0$ $j$-invariant is typically bounded in torsion.
A family $\mathcal{F}$ of elliptic curves defined over number fields is said to be typically bounded in torsion if the torsion subgroups $E(F)[$tors$]$ of those elliptic curves $E_{/F}\in \mathcal{F}$ can be made uniformly bounded after removing from $\mathcal{F}$ those whose number field degrees lie in a subset of $\mathbb{Z}^+$ with arbitrarily small upper density. For every number field $F$, we prove unconditionally that the family $\mathcal{E}_F$ of elliptic curves defined over number fields and with $F$-rational $j$-invariant is typically bounded in torsion. For any integer $d\in\mathbb{Z…
