This work is a sequel of a previous work of one of the authors (Y.Ô), which treated certain congruence relation between an elliptic Gauss sum and a coefficient of power series expansion at the origin of the lemniscate sine function. We extend the previous result (in \cite{O}) which concerned only for non-vanishing elliptic Gauss sums. We give new congruence relations between power series coefficients of the lemniscate cosine function, which hold if and only if the corresponding elliptic Gauss sum vanishes.
This thesis examines the relationship between elliptic curves with complex multiplication and Lambda structures. Our main result is to show that the moduli stack of elliptic curves with complex multiplication, and the universal elliptic curve with complex multiplication over it, both admit Lambda structures and that the structure morphism is a Lambda morphism. This implies that elliptic curves with complex multiplication can be canonically lifted to the Witt vectors of the base (these are big and global Witt vectors). We also show that elliptic curves with complex multiplication of Shimura typ…
We give the complete list of possible torsion subgroups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication over number fields of degree 1-13. Additionally we describe the algorithm used to compute these torsion subgroups and its implementation.
We give a new characterisation of elliptic curves of Shimura type in terms commuting families of Frobenius lifts and also strengthen an old principal ideal theorem for ray class fields. These two results combined yield the existence of global minimal models for elliptic curves of Shimura type, generalising a result of Gross. Along the way we also prove a handful of small but new results regarding elliptic curves with complex multiplication.
We provide a framework for using elliptic curves with complex multiplication to determine the primality or compositeness of integers that lie in special sequences, in deterministic quasi-quadratic time. We use this to find large primes, including the largest prime currently known whose primality cannot feasibly be proved using classical methods.
Given an elliptic curve E over Q with complex multiplication having good reduction at 2, we investigate the 2-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the L-value at 1 for a family of quadratic twists. In particular, we prove a lower bound for this valuation in terms of the Tamagawa number in a form predicted by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
Let $E_{-D}$ be the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3+Dx$ defined over $K=\mathbb{Q}(i)$ for $D\in K$ which is coprime to 2. In this paper, we give a lower bound for the 2-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the central value of Hecke $L$-function associated to $E_{-D}$.
The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime $p=2$ to prove non-vanishing theorems for the value at $s=1$ of the complex $L$-series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field $K = \BQ(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 8$. Our results establish some broad generalizations of the non-vanishing theorem first proven by D. Rohrlich using complex analytic methods. Such non-vanishing theorems are important because it is known that they imply the finiteness of the Mordell-Weil group and the Tate-Shafarevich group of the cor…
We present normal forms for elliptic curves over a field of characteristic $2$ analogous to Edwards normal form, and determine bases of addition laws, which provide strikingly simple expressions for the group law. We deduce efficient algorithms for point addition and scalar multiplication on these forms. The resulting algorithms apply to any elliptic curve over a field of characteristic $2$ with a $4$-torsion point, via an isomorphism with one of the normal forms. We deduce algorithms for duplication in time $2M + 5S + 2m_c$ and for addition of points in time $7M + 2S$, where $M$ is the cost o…
For any elliptic curve E defined over the rationals with complex multiplication and for every prime p, we describe the image of the mod p Galois representation attached to E. We deduce information about the field of definition of torsion points of these curves, in particular we classify all cases where there are torsion points over Galois number fields not containing the field of definition of the CM.
Elliptic curves over finite fields with predefined conditions in the order are practically constructed using the theory of complex multiplication. The stage with longest calculations in this method reconstructs some polynomial with integer coefficients. We will prove theoretical results and give a detailed account of the method itself and how one can use a divisor of the mentioned polynomial with coefficients in some extension of the field of rational numbers.
We give an explicit expression of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum which is a special case of multiple elliptic Dedekind sums introduced by Egami. We also determine the denominator of the rational part and zeros of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum.
We consider the reduction of an elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers modulo primes in a given arithmetic progression and investigate how often the subgroup of rational points of this reduced curve is cyclic as a special case of Serre's Cyclicity Conjecture.
Let $q$ be any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 16$, $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, and let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$. Let $A/H$ be the Gross elliptic curve defined over $H$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of $K$. We prove the existence of a large explicit infinite family of quadratic twists of $A$ whose complex $L$-series does not vanish at $s=1$. This non-vanishing theorem is completely new when $q > 7$. Its proof depends crucially on the results established in our earlier paper for the Iwasawa theory at the prime $p=2$ of the abelian variety $B/K$, which is the restriction…
In this note, I study a comparison map between a motivic and étale cohomology group of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ just outside the range of Voevodsky's isomorphism theorem. I show that the property of an appropriate version of the map being an isomorphism is equivalent to certain arithmetical properties of the elliptic curve.
In this short note, we shall construct a certain topological family which contains all elliptic curves over Q and, as an application, show that this family provides some geometric interpretations of the Hasse-Weil L-function of an elliptic curve over Q whose Mordell-Weil group is of rank $\leq1$.
In this article we will be dedicated some algorithms of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of two positive integers using Zeckendorf form. Such results find application in coding theory.
For every elliptic curve $E$ which has complex multiplication (CM) and is defined over a number field $F$ containing the CM field $K$, we prove that the family of $p^{\infty}$-division fields of $E$, with $p \in \mathbb{N}$ prime, becomes linearly disjoint over $F$ after removing an explicit finite subfamily of fields. We then give a necessary condition for this finite subfamily to be entangled over $F$, which is always met when $F = K$. In this case, and under the further assumption that the elliptic curve $E$ is obtained as a base-change from $\mathbb{Q}$, we describe in detail the entanglem…
We study the complexity of multiplication of two elements in a finite field extension given by their coordinates in a normal basis. We show how to control this complexity using the arithmetic and geometry of algebraic curves.
This paper is about the arithmetic of Kudla-Rapoport divisors on Shimura varieties of type GU(n-1,1). In the first part of the paper we construct a toroidal compactification of N. Kramer's integral model of the Shimura variety. This extends work of K.-W. Lan, who constructed a compactification at unramified primes. In the second, and main, part of the paper we use ideas of Kudla to construct Green functions for the Kudla-Rapoport divisors on the open Shimura variety, and analyze the behavior of these functions near the boundary of the compactification. The Green functions turn out to have loga…
Fix an elliptic curve E over Q. An extremal prime for E is a prime p of good reduction such that the number of rational points on E modulo p is maximal or minimal in relation to the Hasse bound. Assuming that all the symmetric power L-functions associated to E are automorphic and satisfy the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we give the first non-trivial upper bounds for the number of such primes when E is a curve without complex multiplication. In order to obtain this bound, we use explicit equidistribution for the Sato-Tate measure as in the work of Rouse and Thorner (arXiv:1305.5283) and refi…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve with complex multiplication (CM), and for each prime $p$ of good reduction, let $a_E(p) = p + 1 - \#E(\mathbb{F}_p)$ denote the trace of Frobenius. By the Hasse bound, $a_E(p) = 2\sqrt{p} \cos θ_p$ for a unique $θ_p \in [0, π]$. In this paper, we prove that the least prime $p$ such that $θ_p \in [α, β] \subset [0, π]$ satisfies \[ p \ll \left(\frac{N_E}{β- α}\right)^A, \] where $N_E$ is the conductor of $E$ and the implied constant and exponent $A > 2$ are absolute and effectively computable. Our result is an analogue for CM elliptic curves of Linnik's T…
We study infinite families of quadratic and cubic twists of the elliptic curve $E = X_0(27)$. For the family of quadratic twists, we establish a lower bound for the $2$-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the value of the complex $L$-series at $s=1$, and, for the family of cubic twists, we establish a lower bound for the $3$-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the same $L$-value. We show that our lower bounds are precisely those predicted by the celebrated conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
In arXiv:math/0404297 a non-commutative Iwasawa Main Conjecture for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ has been formulated. In this note we show that it holds for all CM-elliptic curves $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. This was claimed in (loc.\ cit.) without proof, which we want to provide now assuming that the torsion conjecture holds in this case. Based on this we show firstly the existence of the (non-commutative) $p$-adic $L$-function of $E$ and secondly that the (non-commutative) Main Conjecture follows from the existence of the Katz-measure, the work of Yager and Rubin's proof of the 2-var…
In this paper, we derive a new computational algorithm for Barrett technique for modular polynomial multiplication, termed BA-P. BA-P is then applied to a new residue arithmetic based Barrett algorithm for modular polynomial multiplication (BA-MPM). The focus of the work is an algorithm that carries out the entire computation using only modular arithmetic without conversion to large degree polynomials. There are several parts to this work. First, we set up a new BA-P using polynomials other than u^alfa. Second, residue arithmetic based BA-MPM is described. A complete mathematical framework is …
The correspondence between right triangles with rational sides, triplets of rational squares in arithmetic succession and integral solutions of certain quadratic forms is well known. We show how this correspondence can be extended to the generalized notions of rational $θ$-triangles, rational squares occurring in arithmetic progressions and concordant forms. In our approach we establish one-to-one mappings to rational points on certain elliptic curves and examine in detail the role of solutions of the $θ$-congruent number problem and the concordant form problem associated with nontrivial torsi…
The arithmetic of elliptic curves, namely polynomial addition and scalar multiplication, can be described in terms of global sections of line bundles on $E\times E$ and $E$, respectively, with respect to a given projective embedding of $E$ in $\mathbb{P}^r$. By means of a study of the finite dimensional vector spaces of global sections, we reduce the problem of constructing and finding efficiently computable polynomial maps defining the addition morphism or isogenies to linear algebra. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method by improving the best known complexity for doubling and tripli…
Let $N$ be a square-free integer such that the arithmetic group $Γ_0(N)^+$ has genus zero; there are $44$ such groups. Let $j_N$ denote the associated Hauptmodul normalized to have residue equal to one and constant term equal to zero in its $q$-expansion. In this article we prove that the Hauptmodul at any elliptic point of the surface associated to $Γ_0(N)^+$ is an algebraic integer. Moreover, for each such $N$ and elliptic point $e$, we show how to explicitly evaluate $j_{N}(e)$ and provide the list of generating polynomials (with small coefficients) of the class fields or their subfields co…
Ordinary binary multiplication of natural numbers can be generalized in a non-trivial way to a ternary operation by considering discrete volumes of lattice hexagons. With this operation, a natural notion of `3-primality' -- primality with respect to ternary multiplication -- is defined, and it turns out that there are very few 3-primes. They correspond to imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-n})$, $n>0$, with odd discriminant and whose ring of integers admits unique factorization. We also describe how to determine representations of numbers as ternary products and related algorithms f…
This article is a contribution to the project of classifying the torsion growth of elliptic curve upon base-change. In this article we treat the case of elliptic curve defined over the rationals with complex multiplication. For this particular case, we give a description of the possible torsion growth over cubic fields and a completely explicit description of this growth in terms of some invariants attached to a given elliptic curve.
This paper focuses on greedy expansions, one possible representation of numbers, and on arithmetical operations with them. Performing addition or multiplication some additional digits can appear. We study bounds on the number of such digits assuming the finiteness of the expansion of the considered sum or product, especially for the case of cubic Pisot units.
We establish several results towards the two-variable main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves without complex multiplication over imaginary quadratic fields, namely (i) the existence of an appropriate p-adic L-function, building on works of Hida and Perrin-Riou, (ii) the basic structure theory of the dual Selmer group, following works of Coates, Hachimori-Venjakob, et al., and (iii) the implications of dihedral or anticyclotomic main conjectures with basechange. The result of (i) is deduced from the construction of Hida and Perrin-Riou, which in particular is seen to give a bound…
Let E be an elliptic curve over Q with complex multiplication. The aim of the present paper is to strengthen the theoretical and numerical results of \cite{CZS}. For each prime p, let t_{E/Q, p} denote the Z_p-corank of the p-primary subgroup of the Tate-Shafarevich group of E/Q. For each ε 0, we prove that t_{E/Q, p} is bounded above by (1/2+ε)p for all sufficiently large good ordinary primes p. We also do numerical calculations on one such E of rank 3, and 5 such E of rank 2, showing in all cases that t_{E/Q, p} = 0 for all good ordinary primes p < 30,000. In fact, we show that, with the pos…
We develop an algorithm to invert the $j$--function in quasilinear time, and apply this to testing whether an elliptic curve has complex multiplication.
We present seven theorems on the structure of prime order torsion points on CM elliptic curves defined over number fields. The first three results refine bounds of Silverberg and Prasad-Yogananda by taking into account the class number of the CM order and the splitting of the prime in the CM field. In many cases we can show that our refined bounds are optimal or asymptotically optimal. We also derive asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the least degree of a CM-point on X_1(N). Upon comparison to bounds for the least degree for which there exist infinitely many rational points on X_1(N), we de…
An arithmetic formula is an expression involving only the constant $1$, and the binary operations of addition and multiplication, with multiplication by $1$ not allowed. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of arithmetic formulas evaluating to $n$ as $n$ goes to infinity, solving a conjecture of E. K. Gnang and D. Zeilberger. We give also an asymptotic formula for the number of arithmetic formulas evaluating to $n$ and using exactly $k$ multiplications. Finally we analyze three specific encodings for producing arithmetic formulas. For almost all integers $n$, we compare the lengths o…
We provide a simple way to add, multiply, invert, and take traces and norms of algebraic integers of a number field using integral matrices. With formulas for the integral bases of the ring of integers of at least a significant proportion of numbers fields, we obtain explicit formulas for these matrices and discuss their generalization. These results are useful in proving statements about the particular number fields they work in. We give a meaningful diagonalization that is helpful in this regard and can be used to define such matrices in general. The matrix identities provided suggest that c…
