The main conjectures of Iwasawa theory provide the only general method known at present for studying the mysterious relationship between purely arithmetic problems and the special values of complex L-functions, typified by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer and its generalizations. Our goal in the present paper is to develop algebraic techniques which enable us to formulate a precise version of such a main conjecture for motives over a large class of p-adic Lie extensions of number fields. The paper ends by formulating and briefly discussing the main conjecture for an elliptic curve E over the rationals Q over the field generated by the coordinates of its p-power division points, where p is a prime greater than 3 of good ordinary reduction for E.
For every normalized newform f in S_2(Gamma_1(N)) with complex multiplication, we study the modular parametrizations of elliptic curves C from the abelian variety A_f. We apply the results obtained when C is Gross's elliptic curve A(p).
This thesis examines the relationship between elliptic curves with complex multiplication and Lambda structures. Our main result is to show that the moduli stack of elliptic curves with complex multiplication, and the universal elliptic curve with complex multiplication over it, both admit Lambda structures and that the structure morphism is a Lambda morphism. This implies that elliptic curves with complex multiplication can be canonically lifted to the Witt vectors of the base (these are big and global Witt vectors). We give the complete list of possible torsion subgroups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication over number fields of degree 1-13. Additionally we describe the algorithm used to compute these torsion subgroups and its implementation.
We consider the problem of checking whether an elliptic curve defined over a given number field has complex multiplication. We study two polynomial time algorithms for this problem, one randomized and the other deterministic. The randomized algorithm can be adapted to yield the discriminant of the endomorphism ring of the curve.
We give a new characterisation of elliptic curves of Shimura type in terms commuting families of Frobenius lifts and also strengthen an old principal ideal theorem for ray class fields. These two results combined yield the existence of global minimal models for elliptic curves of Shimura type, generalising a result of Gross. Along the way we also prove a handful of small but new results regarding elliptic curves with complex multiplication.
We provide a framework for using elliptic curves with complex multiplication to determine the primality or compositeness of integers that lie in special sequences, in deterministic quasi-quadratic time. We use this to find large primes, including the largest prime currently known whose primality cannot feasibly be proved using classical methods.
Fix m >= 1 and let E be an elliptic curve over Q with complex multiplication. We formulate conjectures on the density of primes p (congruent to one modulo m) for which the pth Fourier coefficient of E is an mth power modulo p; often these densities differ from the naive expectation of 1/m. We also prove our conjectures for m dividing the number of roots of unity lying in the CM field of E; the most involved case is m=4 and complex multiplication by Q(i).
We show that the number of copies of ${\Bbb Q}_p/{\Bbb Z}_p$ in the Tate-Shafarevich group of an elliptic curve $E$ over ${\Bbb Q}$ with complex multipication, is at most $2p - g$, where $g$ is the rank of $E({\Bbb Q})$, and for all sufficiently large good ordinary primes $p$.
Given an elliptic curve E over Q with complex multiplication having good reduction at 2, we investigate the 2-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the L-value at 1 for a family of quadratic twists. In particular, we prove a lower bound for this valuation in terms of the Tamagawa number in a form predicted by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.

The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime $p=2$ to prove non-vanishing theorems for the value at $s=1$ of the complex $L$-series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field $K = \BQ(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 8$. For any elliptic curve E defined over the rationals with complex multiplication and for every prime p, we describe the image of the mod p Galois representation attached to E. We deduce information about the field of definition of torsion points of these curves, in particular we classify all cases where there are torsion points over Galois number fields not containing the field of definition of the CM.
Elliptic curves over finite fields with predefined conditions in the order are practically constructed using the theory of complex multiplication. The stage with longest calculations in this method reconstructs some polynomial with integer coefficients. We will prove theoretical results and give a detailed account of the method itself and how one can use a divisor of the mentioned polynomial with coefficients in some extension of the field of rational numbers.
This work is a sequel of a previous work of one of the authors (Y.Ô), which treated certain congruence relation between an elliptic Gauss sum and a coefficient of power series expansion at the origin of the lemniscate sine function. We extend the previous result (in \cite{O}) which concerned only for non-vanishing elliptic Gauss sums. We give new congruence relations between power series coefficients of the lemniscate cosine function, which hold if and only if the corresponding elliptic Gauss sum vanishes.
Let $q$ be any prime $\equiv 7 \mod 16$, $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, and let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$. Let $A/H$ be the Gross elliptic curve defined over $H$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of $K$. For every elliptic curve $E$ which has complex multiplication (CM) and is defined over a number field $F$ containing the CM field $K$, we prove that the family of $p^{\infty}$-division fields of $E$, with $p \in \mathbb{N}$ prime, becomes linearly disjoint over $F$ after removing an explicit finite subfamily of fields. We then give a necessary condition for this finite subfamily to be entangled over $F$, which is always met when $F = K$. We deduce the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular cuspforms with complex multiplication from the multivariable main conjecture for CM number fields. To this end, we study in detail the behaviour of the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the Selmer groups attached to CM number fields under specialisation procedures.
Fix an elliptic curve E over Q. An extremal prime for E is a prime p of good reduction such that the number of rational points on E modulo p is maximal or minimal in relation to the Hasse bound. Assuming that all the symmetric power L-functions associated to E are automorphic and satisfy the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we give the first non-trivial upper bounds for the number of such primes when E is a curve without complex multiplication. We present normal forms for elliptic curves over a field of characteristic $2$ analogous to Edwards normal form, and determine bases of addition laws, which provide strikingly simple expressions for the group law. We deduce efficient algorithms for point addition and scalar multiplication on these forms. The resulting algorithms apply to any elliptic curve over a field of characteristic $2$ with a $4$-torsion point, via an isomorphism with one of the normal forms. We study infinite families of quadratic and cubic twists of the elliptic curve $E = X_0(27)$. For the family of quadratic twists, we establish a lower bound for the $2$-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the value of the complex $L$-series at $s=1$, and, for the family of cubic twists, we establish a lower bound for the $3$-adic valuation of the algebraic part of the same $L$-value. We show that our lower bounds are precisely those predicted by the celebrated conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
Let C/Q be the genus 3 Picard curve given by the affine model y^3=x^4-x. In this paper we compute its Sato-Tate group, show the generalized Sato-Tate conjecture for C, and compute the statistical moments for the limiting distribution of the normalized local factors of C.
In arXiv:math/0404297 a non-commutative Iwasawa Main Conjecture for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ has been formulated. In this note we show that it holds for all CM-elliptic curves $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. This was claimed in (loc.\ cit.) without proof, which we want to provide now assuming that the torsion conjecture holds in this case. This article is a contribution to the project of classifying the torsion growth of elliptic curve upon base-change. In this article we treat the case of elliptic curve defined over the rationals with complex multiplication. For this particular case, we give a description of the possible torsion growth over cubic fields and a completely explicit description of this growth in terms of some invariants attached to a given elliptic curve.
We present an algorithm which speeds scalar multiplication on a general elliptic curve by an estimated 3.8 % to 8.5 % over the best known general methods when using affine coordinates. This is achieved by eliminating a field multiplication when we compute 2P+Q from given points P, Q on the curve. We give applications to simultaneous multiple scalar multiplication and to the Elliptic Curve Method of factorization. We show how this improvement together with another idea can speed the computation of the Weil and Tate pairings by up to 7.8 %.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
We establish several results towards the two-variable main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves without complex multiplication over imaginary quadratic fields, namely (i) the existence of an appropriate p-adic L-function, building on works of Hida and Perrin-Riou, (ii) the basic structure theory of the dual Selmer group, following works of Coates, Hachimori-Venjakob, et al., and (iii) the implications of dihedral or anticyclotomic main conjectures with basechange. Let E be an elliptic curve over Q with complex multiplication. The aim of the present paper is to strengthen the theoretical and numerical results of \cite{CZS}. For each prime p, let t_{E/Q, p} denote the Z_p-corank of the p-primary subgroup of the Tate-Shafarevich group of E/Q. For each ε 0, we prove that t_{E/Q, p} is bounded above by (1/2+ε)p for all sufficiently large good ordinary primes p. We present seven theorems on the structure of prime order torsion points on CM elliptic curves defined over number fields. The first three results refine bounds of Silverberg and Prasad-Yogananda by taking into account the class number of the CM order and the splitting of the prime in the CM field. In many cases we can show that our refined bounds are optimal or asymptotically optimal. We also derive asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the least degree of a CM-point on X_1(N). In this paper we prove the finiteness of the set of S-integral points of a punctured rational elliptic curve without complex multiplication using the Chabauty-Kim method. This extends previous results of Kim in the complex multiplication case. The key input of our approach is the use of modularity techniques to prove the vanishing of certain Selmer groups involved in the Chabauty-Kim method.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has potential complex multiplication by the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ we construct a polynomial $P_E \in \mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ which is a planar model of $E$ and such that the Mahler measure $m(P_E) \in \mathbb{R}$ is related to the special value of the $L$-function $L(E,s)$ at $s = 2$.
In a series of papers we classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves base-extended to number fields of a fixed degree. In this paper we turn our attention to the question of how the torsion of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over the rationals grows over quadratic fields. We go further and we give an explicit characterization of the quadratic fields where the torsion grows in terms of some invariants attached to the curve.

Elliptic curve multiplications can be improved by replacing the standard ladder algorithm's base 2 representation of the scalar multiplicand, with mixed-base representations with power-of-2 bases, processing the n bits of the current digit in one optimized step. Consider the elliptic curve $E$ given by the Weierstrass equation $y^2 = x^3 - 11x - 14$, which has complex multiplication by the order of conductor $2$ inside $\mathbb{Z}[i]$. It was recently observed in a paper of Daniels and Lozano-Robledo that, for each $n \geq 2$, $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{2^{n+1}}) \subseteq \mathbb{Q}(E[2^n])$. In this note, we prove that this (a priori surprising) ``tower of vertical entanglements'' is actually more a feature than a bug: it holds for any elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with complex multiplication by any order of even discriminant.
We give a general framework for uniform, constant-time one-and two-dimensional scalar multiplication algorithms for elliptic curves and Jacobians of genus 2 curves that operate by projecting to the x-line or Kummer surface, where we can exploit faster and more uniform pseudomultiplication, before recovering the proper "signed" output back on the curve or Jacobian. This extends the work of L{ó}pez and Dahab, Okeya and Sakurai, and Brier and Joye to genus 2, and also to two-dimensional scalar multiplication. Let G(A) be an AF-algebra given by periodic Bratteli diagram with the incidence matrix A in GL(n, Z). For a given polynomial p(x) in Z[x] we assign to G(A) a finite abelian group Z^n/p(A) Z^n. It is shown that if p(0)=1 or p(0)=-1 and Z[x]/(p(x)) is a principal ideal domain, then Z^n/p(A) Z^n is an invariant of the strong stable isomorphism class of G(A). For n=2 and p(x)=x-1 we conjecture a formula linking values of the invariant and torsion subgroup of elliptic curves with complex multiplication.
