Recently, the theory concerning piecewise smooth vector fields (PSVFs for short) have been undergoing important improvements. In fact, many results obtained do not have an analogous for smooth vector fields. For example, the chaoticity of planar PSVFs, which is impossible for the smooth ones. These differences are generated by the non-uniqueness of trajectory passing through a point. Inspired by the classical fact that one-dimensional discrete dynamic systems can produce chaotic behavior, we construct a conjugation between the shift map and PSVFs. By means of the results obtained and the techniques employed, a new perspective on the study of PSVFs is brought to light and, through already established results for discrete dynamic systems, we will be able to obtain results regarding PSVFs.
These last years an increasing interest appeared for studying the planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems motivated by the rich applications in modelling real phenomena. One of the difficulties for understanding the dynamics of these systems is the study their limit cycles. In this paper we study the maximum number of crossing limit cycles of some classes of planar discontinuous piecewise differential systems separated by a straight line, and formed by combinations of linear centers (consequently isochronous) and cubic isochronous centers with homogeneous nonlinearities. For these …
In this paper, we study the existence of limit cycles in continuous and discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential systems with two or three zones separated by straight lines and such that the linear systems that define the piecewise one have isolated singular points, i.e. centers or saddles. In this case, we show that if the planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system is either continuous or discontinuous with two zones, then it has no limit cycles. Now, if the planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system is discontinuous with three zones, then it ha…
For any integer $r$ with $1\leq r<\infty$, we present a one-parameter family $F_σ$ $(0<σ<1)$ of 2-dimensional piecewise $\mathcal C^r$ expanding maps such that each $F_σ$ has an observable (i.e. Lebesgue positive) Lyapunov irregular set. These maps are obtained by modifying the piecewise expanding map given in Tsujii (2000). In strong contrast to it, we also show that any Lyapunov irregular set of any 2-dimensional piecewise real analytic expanding map is not observable. This is based on the spectral analysis of piecewise expanding maps in Buzzi (2000).
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcating from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines. We prove that if the central subsystem, i.e. the system defined between the two parallel lines, has a real center and the others subsystems have centers or saddles, then we have at least three limit cycles that appear after perturbations of periodic annulus. For this, we study the number of zeros of a Melnikov function for piecewise Hamiltonian system and present a norm…
We study the parameter space of a family of planar maps, which are linear on each of the right and left half-planes. We consider the set of parameters for which every orbit recurs to the boundary between half-planes. These parameters consist of algebraic curves, determined by the symbolic dynamics of the itinerary that connects boundary points. We study the algebraic and geometrical properties of these curves, in relation with such a symbolic dynamics.
Consider an analytical function $f:V\subset\mathbb R^2\rightarrow\mathbb R$ having $0$ as its regular value, a switching manifold $Σ=f^{-1}(0)$ and a piecewise analytical vector field $X=(X^+,X^-)$, i.e. $X^\pm$ are analytical vector fields defined on $Σ^\pm=\{p\in V: \pm f(p)>0\}$. We characterize when the vector field $X$ has a monodromic singular point in $Σ$, called $Σ$-monodromic singular point. Moreover, under certain conditions, we show that a $Σ$-monodromic singular point of $X$ has a neighborhood free of limit cycles.
The existence of a uniform upper bound for the maximum number of limit cycles of planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by a straight line has been subject of interest of hundreds of papers. After more than 30 years of investigation since Lum-Chua's work, it has remained an open question whether this uniform upper bound exists or not. Here, we give a positive answer for this question by establishing the existence of a natural number $L^*\leq 8$ for which any planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line has no more than $…
In this paper, we are interested in providing lower estimations for the maximum number of limit cycles $H(n)$ that planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by the curve $y=x^n$ can have, where $n$ is a positive integer. For this, we perform a higher order Melnikov analysis for piecewise linear perturbations of the linear center. In particular, we obtain that $H(2)\geq 4,$ $H(3)\geq 8,$ $H(n)\geq7,$ for $n\geq 4$ even, and $H(n)\geq 9,$ for $n\geq 5$ odd. This improves all the previous results for $n\geq2.$ Our analysis is mainly based on some recent results about C…
In the present study we consider planar piecewise linear vector fields with two zones separated by the straight line $x=0$. Our goal is to study the existence of simultaneous crossing and sliding limit cycles for such a class of vector fields. First, we provide a canonical form for these systems assuming that each linear system has center, a real one for $y<0$ and a virtual one for $y>0$, and such that the real center is a global center. Then, working with a first order piecewise linear perturbation we obtain piecewise linear differential systems with three crossing limit cycles. Second, we se…
Planar piecewise linear systems with two linearity zones separated by a straight line and with a periodic orbit at infinity are considered. By using some changes of variables and parameters, a reduced canonical form with five parameters is obtained. Instead of the usual Bendixson transformation to work near infinity, a more direct approach is introduced by taking suitable coordinates for the crossing points of the possible periodic orbits with the separation straight line. The required computations to characterize the stability and bifurcations of the periodic orbit at infinity are much easier…
This paper is devoted to the study of the maximum number of limit cycles, $H(m,n)$, of a planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by the curve $y^n-x^m=0$, with $n,m$ being positive integers. More precisely, we provide a lower estimate of $ H(m,n)$. for all $m,n\in \mathbb{N}$, for piecewise linear perturbations of the linear center using some recent results about Chebyshev systems with positive accuracy and Melnikov Theory

Consider a planar polynomial vector field $X$, and assume it admits a symbolic first integral $\mathcal{F}$, i.e. of the $4$ classes, in growing complexity: Rational, Darbouxian, Liouvillian and Riccati. If $\mathcal{F}$ is not rational, it is sometimes possible to reduce it to a simpler class first integral. We will present algorithms to reduce symbolic first integral to a lower complexity class. These algorithms allow to find the minimal class first integral and in particular to test the existence of a rational first integral except in the case where $\mathcal{F}$ is a $k$-Darbouxian first i…
In this paper we contribute to qualitative and geometric analysis of planar piecewise smooth vector fields, which consist of two smooth vector fields separated by the straight line $y=0$ and sharing the origin as a non-degenerate equilibrium. In the sense of $Σ$-equivalence, we provide a sufficient condition for linearization and give phase portraits and normal forms for these linearizable vector fields. This condition is hard to be weakened because there exist vector fields which are not linearizable when this condition is not satisfied. Regarding perturbations, a necessary and sufficient con…
We study the existence of periodic solutions in a class of planar Filippov systems obtained from non-autonomous periodic perturbations of reversible piecewise smooth differential systems. It is assumed that the unperturbed system presents a simple two-fold cycle, which is characterized by a closed trajectory connecting a visible two-fold singularity to itself. It is shown that under certain generic conditions the perturbed system has sliding and crossing periodic solutions. In order to get our results, Melnikov's ideas were applied together with tools from the geometric singular perturbation t…
In this paper some piecewise smooth perturbations of a three-dimensional differential system are considered. The existence of invariant manifolds filled by periodic orbits is obtained after suitable small perturbations of the original differential system. These manifolds emerge from a continuum of cylinders of $\mathbb{R}^3$ which does exist for the piecewise smooth differential systems after a rotation of some planar algebraic polynomial curves. The main tool used in order to obtain the results is the averaging theory for piecewise smooth differential systems.
In this paper we develop symbolic computation algorithms to investigate finiteness of central configurations for the planar $n$-body problem. Our approach is based on Albouy-Kaloshin's work on finiteness of central configurations for the 5-body problems. In their paper, bicolored graphs called $zw$-diagrams were introduced for possible scenarios when the finiteness conjecture fails, and proving finiteness amounts to exclusions of central configurations associated to these diagrams. Following their method, the amount of computations becomes enormous when there are more than five bodies. Here we…
In this paper, we extend the slow divergence-integral from slow-fast systems, due to De Maesschalck, Dumortier and Roussarie, to smooth systems that limit onto piecewise smooth ones as $ε\rightarrow 0$. In slow-fast systems, the slow divergence-integral is an integral of the divergence along a canard cycle with respect to the slow time and it has proven very useful in obtaining good lower and upper bounds of limit cycles in planar polynomial systems. In this paper, our slow divergence-integral is based upon integration along a generalized canard cycle for a piecewise smooth two-fold bifurcatio…
