In this paper we contribute to qualitative and geometric analysis of planar piecewise smooth vector fields, which consist of two smooth vector fields separated by the straight line $y=0$ and sharing the origin as a non-degenerate equilibrium. In the sense of $Σ$-equivalence, we provide a sufficient condition for linearization and give phase portraits and normal forms for these linearizable vector fields. This condition is hard to be weakened because there exist vector fields which are not linearizable when this condition is not satisfied. Regarding perturbations, a necessary and sufficient condition for local $Σ$-structural stability is established when the origin is still an equilibrium of both smooth vector fields under perturbations. In the opposition to this case, we prove that for any piecewise smooth vector field studied in this paper there is a limit cycle bifurcating from the origin, and there are some piecewise smooth vector fields such that for any positive integer $m$ there is a perturbation having exactly $m$ limit cycles bifurcating from the origin. Here $m$ maybe infinity.
We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions with small amplitude of the non--linear planar double pendulum perturbed by smooth or non--smooth functions.
We study the linear stability of $(1+n)$-gon elliptic relative equilibrium (ERE for short), that is the Kepler homographic solution with the $(1+n)$-gon central configurations. We show that for $n\geq 8$ and any eccentricity $e\in[0,1)$, the $(1+n)$-gon ERE is stable when the central mass $m$ is large enough. Some linear instability results are given when $m$ is small.
In this paper, we apply the averaging method via Brouwer degree in a class of planar systems given by a linear center perturbed by a sum of continuous homogeneous vector fields, to study lower bounds for their number of limit cycles. Our results can be applied to models where the smoothness is lost on the set $Σ=\{xy=0\}$. We also apply them to present a variant of Hilbert 16th problem, where the goal is to bound the number of limit cycles in terms of the number of monomials of a family of polynomial vector fields, instead of doing this in terms of their degrees.
In this paper we research global dynamics and bifurcations of planar piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous polynomial differential systems. We present sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of a center in piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous systems. Moreover, the center is global and non-isochronous if it exists, which cannot appear in smooth quadratic quasi-homogeneous systems. Then the global structures of piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous systems are studied. Finally we investigate limit cycle bifurcations …
In this paper some aspects on chaotic behavior and minimality in planar piecewise smooth vector fields theory are treated. The occurrence of non-deterministic chaos is observed and the concept of orientable minimality is introduced. It is also investigated some relations between minimality and orientable minimality and observed the existence of new kinds of non-trivial minimal sets in chaotic systems. The approach is geometrical and involve the ordinary techniques of non-smooth systems.
We consider a switched system of two subsystems that are activated as the trajectory enters the regions $\{(x,y):x>\bar x\}$ and $\{(x,y):x<-\bar x\}$ respectively, where $\bar x$ is a positive parameter. We prove that a regular asymptotically stable equilibrium of the associated Filippov equation of sliding motion (corresponding to $\bar x=0$) yields an orbitally stable limit cycle for all $\bar x>0$ sufficiently small. The research is motivated by an application to a dc-dc power converter, where $\bar x>0$ is used in place of $\bar x=0$ to avoid sliding motions.
Recently, the theory concerning piecewise smooth vector fields (PSVFs for short) have been undergoing important improvements. In fact, many results obtained do not have an analogous for smooth vector fields. For example, the chaoticity of planar PSVFs, which is impossible for the smooth ones. These differences are generated by the non-uniqueness of trajectory passing through a point. Inspired by the classical fact that one-dimensional discrete dynamic systems can produce chaotic behavior, we construct a conjugation between the shift map and PSVFs. By means of the results obtained and the techn…
A rigorous proof of a theorem on the coexistence of smooth Lyapunov function and smooth planar dynamical system with one arbitrary limit cycle is given, combining with a novel decomposition of the dynamical system from the perspective of mechanics. We base on this dynamic structure incorporating several efforts of this dynamic structure on fixed points, limit cycles and chaos, as well as on relevant known results, such as Schoenflies theorem, Riemann mapping theorem, boundary correspondence theorem and differential geometry theory, to prove this coexistence. We divide our procedure into three …
Classical canard explosion results in smooth systems require the vector field to be at least $C^3$, since canard cycles are created as the result of a Hopf bifurcation. The work on canards in nonsmooth, planar systems is recent and has thus far been restricted to piecewise-linear or piecewise-smooth Van der Pol systems, where an extremum of the critical manifold arises from the nonsmoothness. In both of these cases, a canard (or canard-like) explosion is created through a nonsmooth bifurcation as the slow nullcline passes through a corner of the critical manifold. Additionally, it is possible …
The paper deals with the study of a satellite attracted by n primary bodies, which form a relative equilibrium. We use orthogonal degree to prove global bifurcation of planar and spatial periodic solutions from the equilibria of the satellite. In particular, we analyze the restricted three body problem and the problem of a satellite attracted by the Maxwell's ring relative equilibrium.
We use a Voronoi-type tessellation based on a compound Poisson point process to construct a polynomially mixing stationary random smooth planar vector field with bounded nonnegative components such that, with probability one, none of the associated integral curves possess an asymptotic direction.
Particles are injected to a large planar rectangle through the boundary. Assuming that the particles move independently from one another and the boundary is also absorbing, we identify a set of abstract conditions which imply the local equilibrium of the particle density in diffusive scaling limit. We verify that our abstract conditions hold in two examples: iid random walks and the periodic Lorentz process.
We construct a planar smooth weakly mixing stationary random vector field with nonnegative components such that, with probability 1, the flow generated by this vector field does not have an asymptotic direction. Moreover, for all individual trajectories, the set of partial limiting directions coincides with those spanning the positive quadrant. A modified example shows that a particle in space-time weakly mixing positive velocity field does not necessarily have an asymptotic average velocity.
We use blowup to study the regularization of codimension one two-fold singularities in planar piecewise smooth (PWS) dynamical systems. We focus on singular canards, pseudo-equlibria and limit cycles that can occur in the PWS system. Using the regularization of Sotomayor and Teixeira \cite{Sotomayor96}, we show rigorously how singular canards can persist and how the bifurcation of pseudo-equilibria is related to bifurcations of equilibria in the regularized system. We also show that PWS limit cycles are connected to Hopf bifurcations of the regularization. In addition, we show how regularizati…
Since the strong degeneracies present in the N-body problem, even in the basic case of the planar three-body problem, nobody inspects the problem of nonlinear stability of Lagrange relative equilibrium. We introduce a new coordinate system to reduce degeneracies according to intrinsic symmetrical characteristic of the N-body problem, then we prove that Lagrange relative equilibrium is stable in the sense of measure, provided it is spectrally stable and except six special resonant cases. Indeed, under this condition, there are abundant KAM invariant tori or quasi-periodic solutions near Lagrang…
In this work, we revisit the planar restricted four-body problem to study the dynamics of an infinitesimal mass under the gravitational force produced by three heavy bodies with unequal masses, forming an equilateral triangle configuration. We unify known results about the existence and linear stability of equilibrium points of this problem which have been obtained earlier, either as relative equilibria or a central configuration of the planar restricted $(3 + 1)$-body problem. It is the first attempt in this direction. A systematic numerical investigation is performed to obtain the resonance …
The famous conjecture of V.Ya.Ivrii says that {\it in every billiard with infinitely-smooth boundary in a Euclidean space the set of periodic orbits has measure zero}. In the present paper we study its complex analytic version for quadrilateral orbits in two dimensions, with reflections from holomorphic curves. We present the complete classification of 4-reflective complex analytic counterexamples: billiards formed by four holomorphic curves in the projective plane that have open set of quadrilateral orbits. This extends the previous author's result classifying 4-reflective complex planar alge…
We study equilibrium measures (Käenmäki measures) supported on self-affine sets generated by a finite collection of diagonal and anti-diagonal matrices acting on the plane and satisfying the strong separation property. Our main result is that such measures are exact dimensional and the dimension satisfies the Ledrappier-Young formula, which gives an explicit expression for the dimension in terms of the entropy and Lyapunov exponents as well as the dimension of the important coordinate projection of the measure. In particular, we do this by showing that the Käenmäki measure is equal to the sum …
It is known that the dynamics of planar billiards satisfies strong mixing properties (e.g. exponential decay of correlations) provided that some expansion condition on unstable curves is satisfied. This condition has been shown to always hold for smooth dispersing planar billiards, but it needed to be assumed separately in the case of dispersing planar billiards with corner points. We prove that this expansion condition holds for any dispersing planar billiard with corner points, no cusps and bounded horizon.
The set of transverse homoclinic intersections for a saddle-focus equilibrium in the planar equilateral restricted four-body problem admit certain simple homoclinic orbits which form the skeleton of the complete homoclinic intersection -- or homoclinic web. In the present work, the planar restricted four-body problem is viewed as an invariant subsystem of the spatial problem, and the influence of this planar homoclinic skeleton on the spatial dynamics is studied from a numerical point of view. Starting from the vertical Lyapunov families emanating from saddle focus equilibria, we compute the s…
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of invariant curves of planar mappings which are quasi-periodic in the spatial variable, satisfy the intersection property, $\mathcal{C}^{p}$ smooth with $p>2n+1$, $n$ is the number of frequencies.
An attractor of a piecewise-smooth continuous system of differential equations can bifurcate from a stable equilibrium to a more complicated invariant set when it collides with a switching manifold under parameter variation. Here numerical evidence is provided to show that this invariant set can be chaotic. The transition occurs locally (in a neighbourhood of a point) and instantaneously (for a single critical parameter value). This phenomenon is illustrated for the normal form of a boundary equilibrium bifurcation in three dimensions using parameter values adapted from of a piecewise-linear m…
The dynamics of the 4-body problem allows for two binary collisions to occur simultaneously. It is known that in the collinear 4-body problem this simultaneous binary collision (SBC) can be block-regularised, but that the resulting block map is only $C^{8/3}$ differentiable. In this paper, it is proved that the $C^{8/3}$ differentiability persists for the SBC in the planar 4-body problem. The proof uses several geometric tools, namely, blow-up, normal forms, dynamics near normally hyperbolic manifolds of equilibrium points, and Dulac maps.
By introducing a new coordinate system, we prove that there are abundant new periodic orbits near relative equilibrium solutions of the N-body problem. We consider only Lagrange relative equilibrium of the three-body problem and Euler-Moulton relative equilibrium of the N-body problem, although we believe that there are similar results for general relative equilibrium solutions. All of these periodic orbits lie on a 2d-dimensional central manifold of the planar N-body problem. Besides d one parameter family of periodic orbits which are well known as Lyapunov's orbits or Weinstein's orbits, we …
We prove an equidistribution result for $C^{\infty}$ maps with respect to equilibrium states. We apply the result to the time-one map of the geodesic flow of a closed smooth Riemannian manifold.
A caustic of a strictly convex planar bounded billiard is a smooth curve whose tangent lines are reflected from the billiard boundary to its tangent lines. The famous Birkhoff Conjecture states that if the billiard boundary has an inner neighborhood foliated by closed caustics, then the billiard is an ellipse. It was studied by many mathematicians, including H.Poritsky, M.Bialy, S.Bolotin, A.Mironov, V.Kaloshin, A.Sorrentino and others. In the paper we study its following generalized dual version stated by S.Tabachnikov. Consider a closed smooth strictly convex curve $γ\subset\mathbb{RP}^2$ eq…
The system of four point vortices in the plane has relative equilibria that behave as composite particles, in the case where three of the vortices have strength $-Γ/3$ and one of the vortices has strength $Γ$. These relative equilibria occur at nongeneric momenta. The reduction of this system, at those momenta, by continuous and then discrete symmetries, classifies the 4-vortex states which have been observed as products of collisions of two such composite particles. In this article I explicitly calculate these reductions, and show they are qualitatively identical one degree of freedom systems…
We study the linear and nonlinear stability of relative equilibria in the planar N-vortex problem, adapting the approach of Moeckel from the corresponding problem in celestial mechanics. After establishing some general theory, a topological approach is taken to show that for the case of positive circulations, a relative equilibrium is linearly stable if and only if it is a nondegenerate minimum of the Hamiltonian restricted to a level surface of the angular impulse (moment of inertia). Using a criterion of Dirichlet's, this implies that any linearly stable relative equilibrium with positive vo…
In this paper, we analyse the impact of delayed event detection on the stability of a 2-mode planar hybrid automata. We consider hybrid automata with a unique equilibrium point for all the modes, and we find the maximum delay that preserves stability of that equilibrium point. We also show for the class of hybrid automata treated that the instability of the equilibrium point for the equivalent hybrid automaton with delay in the transitions is equivalent to the existence of a closed orbit in the hybrid state space, a result that is inspired by the Joint Spectral Radius theorem. This leads to an…
Let $\{T^t\}$ be a smooth flow with positive speed and positive topological entropy on a compact smooth three dimensional manifold, and let $μ$ be an ergodic measure of maximal entropy. We show that either $\{T^t\}$ is Bernoulli, or $\{T^t\}$ is isomorphic to the product of a Bernoulli flow and a rotational flow. Applications are given to Reeb flows.
By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In a…
