We use blowup to study the regularization of codimension one two-fold singularities in planar piecewise smooth (PWS) dynamical systems. We focus on singular canards, pseudo-equlibria and limit cycles that can occur in the PWS system. Using the regularization of Sotomayor and Teixeira \cite{Sotomayor96}, we show rigorously how singular canards can persist and how the bifurcation of pseudo-equilibria is related to bifurcations of equilibria in the regularized system. We also show that PWS limit cycles are connected to Hopf bifurcations of the regularization. In addition, we show how regularization can create another type of limit cycle that does not appear to be present in the original PWS system. For both types of limit cycle, we show that the criticality of the Hopf bifurcation that gives rise to periodic orbits is strongly dependent on the precise form of the regularization. Finally, we analyse the limit cycles as locally unique families of periodic orbits of the regularization and connect them, when possible, to limit cycles of the PWS system. We illustrate our analysis with numerical simulations and show how the regularized system can undergo a canard explosion phenomenon.
The existence and bifurcation of homoclinic orbits in planar piecewise linear homogeneous systems with two regions separated by a discontinuity boundary are investigated in this paper. In addition, existence of periodic orbits and stability of the origin are also discussed without the assumption of continuity for the planar piecewise linear homogeneous systems.
This paper presents results concerning bifurcations of 2D piecewise-smooth dynamical systems governed by vector fields. Generic three-parameter families of a class of Non-Smooth Vector Fields are studied and the bifurcation diagrams are exhibited. Our main results describe the unfolding of the so called Resonant $Fold-Saddle$ singularity.
This Letter outlines 20 geometric mechanisms by which limit cycles are created locally in two-dimensional piecewise-smooth systems of ODEs. These include boundary equilibrium bifurcations of hybrid systems, Filippov systems, and continuous systems, and limit cycles created from folds and by the addition of hysteresis or time-delay. Scaling laws for the amplitude and period of the limit cycles are compared to (classical) Hopf bifurcations.
Mode-locking regions (resonance tongues) formed by border-collision bifurcations of piecewise-smooth, continuous maps commonly exhibit a distinctive sausage-like geometry with pinch points called "shrinking points". In this paper we extend our unfolding of the piecewise-linear case [{\em Nonlinearity}, 22(5):1123-1144, 2009] to show how shrinking points are destroyed by nonlinearity. We obtain a codimension-three unfolding of this shrinking point bifurcation for $N$-dimensional maps. We show that the destruction of the shrinking points generically occurs by the creation of a curve of saddle-no…
Resonance tongues are mode-locking regions of parameter space in which stable periodic solutions occur; they commonly occur, for example, near Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. For piecewise-smooth, continuous maps these tongues typically have a distinctive lens-chain (or sausage) shape in two-parameter bifurcation diagrams. We give a symbolic description of a class of "rotational" periodic solutions that display lens-chain structures for a general $N$-dimensional map. We then unfold the codimension-two, shrinking point bifurcation, where the tongues have zero width. A number of codimension-one bif…
In this paper, the general perturbation problem of piecewise smooth integrable differential systems with two switching planes is considered. Firstly, when the unperturbed system has a family of periodic orbits, the first order Melnikov vector function is derived which can be used to study the number of periodic orbits bifurcated from the period annuli. Then, by using the obtained Melnikov vector function, we get an upper bound of the number of periodic orbits of a concrete $n$-dimensional piecewise smooth differential system.
In this paper, we perturb the global center of the planar polynomial vector fields $\mathcal{X}(x,y)=(-y(x^2+a^2),x(x^2+a^2))$ ($a\neq0$) inside cubic piecewise smooth polynomials with switching line $y=0$. By using average function of first order, we prove that the sharper bound of the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the period annulus is 6.
Classical canard explosion results in smooth systems require the vector field to be at least $C^3$, since canard cycles are created as the result of a Hopf bifurcation. The work on canards in nonsmooth, planar systems is recent and has thus far been restricted to piecewise-linear or piecewise-smooth Van der Pol systems, where an extremum of the critical manifold arises from the nonsmoothness. In both of these cases, a canard (or canard-like) explosion is created through a nonsmooth bifurcation as the slow nullcline passes through a corner of the critical manifold. Additionally, it is possible …
We solve the center-focus problem in a class of piecewise quadratic polynomial differential systems with an invariant straight line. The separation curve is also a straight line which is not invariant. We provide families having at the origin a weak-foci of maximal order. In the continuous class, the cyclicity problem is also solved, being $3$ such maximal number. Moreover, for the discontinuous class but without sliding segment, we prove the existence of $7$ limit cycles of small amplitude.
Motivated by models that arise in controlled ship maneuvering, we analyze Hopf bifurcations in systems with piecewise smooth nonlinear part. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the generalization of the first Lyapunov coefficient to this setting. This generically determines the direction of branching (super- versus sub-criticality), but in general this differs from any fixed smoothing of the vector field. We focus on nonsmooth nonlinearities of the form $u_i|u_j|$, but our results are formulated in broader generality for systems in any dimension with piecewise smooth nonlinear part.…
Piecewise linear recurrent neural networks (PLRNNs) form the basis of many successful machine learning applications for time series prediction and dynamical systems identification, but rigorous mathematical analysis of their dynamics and properties is lagging behind. Here we contribute to this topic by investigating the existence of n-cycles $(n\geq 3)$ and border-collision bifurcations in a class of n-dimensional piecewise linear continuous maps which have the general form of a PLRNN. This is particularly important as for one-dimensional maps the existence of 3-cycles implies chaos. It is sho…
For many physical systems the transition from a stationary solution to sustained small amplitude oscillations corresponds to a Hopf bifurcation. For systems involving impacts, thresholds, switches, or other abrupt events, however, this transition can be achieved in fundamentally different ways. This paper reviews 20 such `Hopf-like' bifurcations for two-dimensional ODE systems with state-dependent switching rules. The bifurcations include boundary equilibrium bifurcations, the collision or change of stability of equilibria or folds on switching manifolds, and limit cycle creation via hysteresi…
In this paper we study conditions for the existence of the close orbit in piecewise continuous Matsumoto-Chua System. Our interest are in a pseudo saddle-node bifurcation in the first return application. In this bifurcation the close orbit is releted to stable fixed point.
The phenomenon of slow passage through a Hopf bifurcation is ubiquitous in multiple-timescale dynamical systems, where a slowly-varying quantity replacing a static parameter induces the solutions of the resulting slow-fast system to feel the effect of a Hopf bifurcation with a delay. This phenomenon is well understood in the context of smooth slow-fast dynamical systems. In the present work, we study for the first time this phenomenon in piecewise linear (PWL) slow-fast systems. This special class of systems is indeed known to reproduce all features of their smooth counterpart while being more…
We show that a nonlinear, piecewise-smooth, planar dynamical system can exhibit canard phenomena. Canard solutions and explosion in nonlinear, piecewise-smooth systems can be qualitatively more similar to the phenomena in smooth systems than piecewise-linear systems, since the nonlinearity allows for canards to transition from small cycles to canards ``with heads." The canards are born of a bifurcation that occurs as the slow-nullcline coincides with the splitting manifold. However, there are conditions under which this bifurcation leads to a phenomenon called super-explosion, the instantaneou…
In this paper we use the blow up method of Dumortier and Roussarie \cite{dumortier_1991,dumortier_1993,dumortier_1996}, in the formulation due to Krupa and Szmolyan \cite{krupa_extending_2001}, to study the regularization of singularities of piecewise smooth dynamical systems \cite{filippov1988differential} in $\mathbb R^3$. Using the regularization method of Sotomayor and Teixeira \cite{Sotomayor96}, first we demonstrate the power of our approach by considering the case of a fold line. We quickly recover a main result of Bonet and Seara \cite{reves_regularization_2014} in a simple manner. The…
As the parameters of a piecewise-smooth system of ODEs are varied, a periodic orbit undergoes a bifurcation when it collides with a surface where the system is discontinuous. Under certain conditions this is a grazing-sliding bifurcation. Near grazing-sliding bifurcations structurally stable dynamics are captured by piecewise-linear continuous maps. Recently it was shown that maps of this class can have infinitely many asymptotically stable periodic solutions of a simple type. Here this result is used to show that at a grazing-sliding bifurcation an asymptotically stable periodic orbit can bif…
This paper deals with the problem of limit cycle bifurcations for piecewise smooth integrable differential systems with four zones. When the unperturbed system has a family of periodic orbits, the first order Melnikov function is derived which can be used to study the number of limit cycles bifurcated from the periodic orbits. As an application, using the first order Melnikov function and Picard-Fuchs equation, we obtain an upper bound of the number of bifurcated limit cycles of a concrete piecewise smooth differential system.
In this paper we research global dynamics and bifurcations of planar piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous polynomial differential systems. We present sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of a center in piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous systems. Moreover, the center is global and non-isochronous if it exists, which cannot appear in smooth quadratic quasi-homogeneous systems. Then the global structures of piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous systems are studied. Finally we investigate limit cycle bifurcations …
Two-fold singularities in a piecewise smooth (PWS) dynamical system in $\mathbb{R}^3$ have long been the subject of intensive investigation. The interest stems from the fact that trajectories which enter the two-fold are associated with forward non-uniqueness. The key questions are: How do we continue orbits forward in time? Are there orbits that are distinguished among all the candidates? We address these questions by regularizing the PWS dynamical system for the case of the visible-invisible two-fold. Within this framework, we consider a regularization function outside the class of Sotomayor…

In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcate from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines, such that the linear differential systems that define the piecewise one have a center and two saddles. That is, the linear differential system in the region between the two parallel lines (i.e. the central subsystem) has a center and the others subsystems have saddles. We prove that if the central subsystem has a real or a boundary center, then we have at least six limit …
The stable and unstable manifolds of an invariant set of a piecewise-smooth map are themselves piecewise-smooth. Consequently, as parameters of a piecewise-smooth map are varied, an invariant set can develop a homoclinic connection when its stable manifold intersects a non-differentiable point of its unstable manifold (or vice-versa). This is a codimension-one bifurcation analogous to a homoclinic tangency of a smooth map, referred to here as a homoclinic corner. This paper presents an unfolding of generic homoclinic corners for saddle fixed points of planar piecewise-smooth continuous maps. I…
This paper is concerned with the local bifurcation analysis around typical singularities of piecewise smooth planar dynamical systems. Three-parameter families of a class of non$-$smooth vector fields are studied and the tridimensional bifurcation diagrams are exhibited. Our main results describe the unfolding of the so called fold-cusp singularity by means of the variation of 3 parameters.

A piecewise-linear model with a single degree of freedom is derived from first principles for a driven vertical cantilever beam with a localized mass and symmetric stops. The resulting piecewise-linear dynamical system is smoothed by a switching function (nonlinear homotopy). For the chosen smoothing function it is shown that the smoothing can induce bifurcations in certain parameter regimes. These induced bifurcations disappear when the transition of the switching is sufficiently and increasingly localized as the impact becomes harder. The bifurcation structure of the impact oscillator respon…
In this paper, a two parameters family $F_{β_1,β_2}$ of maps of the plane living two different subspaces invariant is studied. We observe that, our model exhibits two chaotic attractors $A_i$, $i=0,1$, lying in these invariant subspaces and identify the parameters at which $A_i$ has a locally riddled basin of attraction or becomes a chaotic saddle. Then, the occurrence of riddled basin in the global sense is investigated in an open region of $β_1β_2$-plane. We semi-conjugate our system to a random walk model and define a fractal boundary which separates the basins of attraction of the two chao…
From two-dimensional continuous maps to one-dimensional discontinuous maps: a novel reduction explaining complex bifurcation structures in piecewise-linear families of maps
In this paper, we study the problem of limit cycle bifurcation in two piecewise polynomial systems of Liénard type with multiple parameters. Based on the developed Melnikov function theory, we obtain the maximum number of limit cycles of these two systems.
We establish a theorem on bifurcation of limit cycles from a focus boundary equilibrium of an impacting system, which is universally applicable to prove bifurcation of limit cycles from focus boundary equilibria in other types of piecewise-smooth systems, such as Filippov systems and sweeping processes. Specifically, we assume that one of the subsystems of the piecewise-smooth system under consideration admits a focus equilibrium that lie on the switching manifold at the bifurcation value of the parameter. In each of the three cases, we derive a linearized system which is capable to conclude a…
The limiting slow dynamics of slow-fast, piecewise-linear, continuous systems of ODEs occurs on critical manifolds that are piecewise-linear. At points of non-differentiability, such manifolds are not normally hyperbolic and so the fundamental results of geometric singular perturbation theory do not apply. In this paper it is shown that if the critical manifold is globally stable then the system is forward invariant in a neighbourhood of the critical manifold. It follows that in this neighbourhood the dynamics is given by a regular perturbation of the dynamics on the critical manifold and so d…
We extend and apply a recently developed approach to the study of dynamic bifurcations in PDEs based on the geometric blow-up method. We show that this approach, which has so far only been applied to study a dynamic Turing bifurcation in a cubic Swift-Hohenberg equation, can be coupled with a fast-slow extension of the method of multiple scales. This leads to a formal but systematic method, which can be viewed as a fast-slow generalisation of the formal part of classical modulation theory. We demonstrate the utility and versatility of this method by using it to derive modulation equations, i.e…
This paper consists in discussing some issues on generic local classification of typical singularities of $2D$ piecewise smooth vector fields when the switching set is an algebraic variety. The main focus is to obtain classification results concerning structural stability and generic codimension one bifurcations.
The collision of a fixed point with a switching manifold (or border) in a piecewise-smooth map can create many different types of invariant sets. This paper explores two techniques that, combined, establish a chaotic attractor is created in a border-collision bifurcation in $\mathbb{R}^d$ $(d \ge 1)$. First, asymptotic stability of the fixed point at the bifurcation is characterised and shown to imply a local attractor is created. Second, a lower bound on the maximal Lyapunov exponent is obtained from the determinants of the one-sided Jacobian matrices associated with the fixed point. Special …
We present an unfolding of the codimension-two scenario of the simultaneous occurrence of a discontinuous bifurcation and an Andronov-Hopf bifurcation in a piecewise-smooth, continuous system of autonomous ordinary differential equations in the plane. We find the Hopf cycle undergoes a grazing bifurcation that may be very shortly followed by a saddle-node bifurcation of the orbit. We derive scaling laws for the bifurcation curves that emanate from the codimension-two bifurcation.
An attractor of a piecewise-smooth continuous system of differential equations can bifurcate from a stable equilibrium to a more complicated invariant set when it collides with a switching manifold under parameter variation. Here numerical evidence is provided to show that this invariant set can be chaotic. The transition occurs locally (in a neighbourhood of a point) and instantaneously (for a single critical parameter value). This phenomenon is illustrated for the normal form of a boundary equilibrium bifurcation in three dimensions using parameter values adapted from of a piecewise-linear m…
In this paper we consider a one dimensional liner piecewise-smooth discontinuous map. It is well known that stable periodic orbits exist in this type of map for a specific parameter region. It is also known that the corresponding bifurcation phenomena termed as "period adding bifurcation" exhibits a special structure for such case. In last couple of years, various authors have analyzed this structure using border collision bifurcation (BCB) curves and given characterization for various parameter regions. In this paper we have analyzed a specific parameter space using a different method. We sho…
In this paper we study the global dynamics of piecewise smooth vector fields defined in the two dimensional torus and sphere. We provide conditions under these families exhibits periodic and dense trajectories and we describe some global bifurcations. We also study its minimal sets and characterize the chaotic behavior of the piecewise smooth vector fields defined in torus and sphere.
We consider the bifurcation diagram in a suitable parameter plane of a quadratic vector field in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that features a homoclinic flip bifurcation of the most complicated type. This codimension-two bifurcation is characterized by a change of orientability of associated two-dimensional manifolds and generates infinite families of secondary bifurcations. We show that curves of secondary $n$-homoclinic bifurcations accumulate on a curve of a heteroclinic bifurcation involving infinity. We present an adaptation of the technique known as Lin's method that enables us to compute such connect…
We unfold the codimension-two simultaneous occurrence of a border-collision bifurcation and a period-doubling bifurcation for a general piecewise-smooth, continuous map. We find that, with sufficient non-degeneracy conditions, a locus of period-doubling bifurcations emanates non-tangentially from a locus of border-collision bifurcations. The corresponding period-doubled solution undergoes a border-collision bifurcation along a curve emanating from the codimension-two point and tangent to the period-doubling locus here. In the case that the map is one-dimensional local dynamics are completely c…
This paper concerns stochastic perturbations of piecewise-smooth ODE systems relevant for vibro-impacting dynamics, where impact events constitute the primary source of randomness. Such systems are characterised by the existence of switching manifolds that divide the phase space into regions where the system is smooth. The initiation of impacts is captured by a grazing bifurcation, at which a periodic orbit describing motion without impacts develops a tangential intersection with a switching manifold. Oscillatory dynamics near regular grazing bifurcations are described by piecewise-smooth maps…
Planar piecewise linear systems with two linearity zones separated by a straight line and with a periodic orbit at infinity are considered. By using some changes of variables and parameters, a reduced canonical form with five parameters is obtained. Instead of the usual Bendixson transformation to work near infinity, a more direct approach is introduced by taking suitable coordinates for the crossing points of the possible periodic orbits with the separation straight line. The required computations to characterize the stability and bifurcations of the periodic orbit at infinity are much easier…
We study a class of planar continuous piecewise linear vector fields with three zones. Using the Poincaré map and some techniques for proving the existence of limit cycles for smooth differential systems, we prove that this class admits at least two limit cycles that appear by perturbations of a period annulus. Moreover, we describe the bifurcation of the limit cycles for this class through two examples of two-parameter families of piecewise linear vector fields with three zones.
The planar visible fold is a simple singularity in piecewise smooth systems. In this paper, we consider singularly perturbed systems that limit to this piecewise smooth bifurcation as the singular perturbation parameter $ε\rightarrow 0$. Alternatively, these singularly perturbed systems can be thought of as regularizations of their piecewise counterparts. The main contribution of the paper is to demonstrate the use of consecutive blowup transformations in this setting, allowing us to obtain detailed information about a transition map near the fold under very general assumptions. We apply this …
We show the existence of Shilnikov-type dynamics and bifurcation behaviour in general discrete three-dimensional piecewise smooth maps and give analytical results for the occurence of such dynamical behaviour. Our main example in fact shows a `two-sided' Shilnikov dynamics, i.e. simultaneous looping and homoclinic intersection of the one-dimensional eigenmanfolds of fixed points on both sides of the border. We also present two complementary methods to analyse the return time of an orbit to the border: one based on recursion and another based on complex interpolation.
Our object of study is non smooth vector fields on $\R^2$. We apply the techniques of geometric singular perturbations in non smooth vector fields after regularization and a blow$-$up. In this way we are able to bring out some results that bridge the space between non$-$smooth dynamical systems presenting typical singularities and singularly perturbed smooth systems.
