We present a $(1+\frac{k}{k+2})$-approximation algorithm for the Maximum $k$-dependent Set problem on bipartite graphs for any $k\ge1$. For a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, the algorithm runs in $O(k m \sqrt{n})$ time and improves upon the previously best-known approximation ratio of $1+\frac{k}{k+1}$ established by Kumar et al. [Theoretical Computer Science, 526: 90--96 (2014)]. Our proof also indicates that the algorithm retains its approximation ratio when applied to the (more general) class of König-Egerváry graphs.
A bipartite graph is subcubic if it is an irregular bipartite graph with maximum degree three. In this paper, we prove that the asymptotic value of maximum spectral radius over subcubic bipartite graphs of order $n$ is $3-\varTheta(\frac{π^{2}}{n^{2}})$. Our key approach is taking full advantage of the eigenvalues of certain tridiagonal matrices, due to Willms [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 30 (2008) 639--656]. Moreover, for large maximum degree, i.e., the maximum degree is at least $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$, we characterize irregular bipartite graphs with maximum spectral radius. For general maximum…
In this paper we determine all the bipartite graphs with the maximum sum of squares of degrees among the ones with a given number of vertices and edges.
The Estrada index of a graph $G$ is defined as $EE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^ne^{λ_i}$, where $λ_1,$ $ λ_2,\ldots, λ_n$ are the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the unique bipartite graph with maximum Estrada index among bipartite graphs with given matching number and given vertex-connectivity, edge-connectivity, respectively.
We prove a sharp Ore-type criterion for hamiltonicity of balanced bipartite digraphs: A bipartite digraph D, with colour classes of cardinality N, is hamiltonian if, for every pair of vertices u and v from opposite colour classes of D such that the arc uv is not in D, the sum of the outdegree of u and the indegree of v is greater than or equal to N+2.
We consider a natural, yet seemingly not much studied, extremal problem in bipartite graphs. A bi-hole of size $t$ in a bipartite graph $G$ is a copy of $K_{t, t}$ in the bipartite complement of $G$. Let $f(n, Δ)$ be the largest $k$ for which every $n \times n$ bipartite graph with maximum degree $Δ$ in one of the parts has a bi-hole of size $k$. Determining $f(n, Δ)$ is thus the bipartite analogue of finding the largest independent set in graphs with a given number of vertices and bounded maximum degree. Our main result determines the asymptotic behavior of $f(n, Δ)$. More precisely, we show …
A maximum stable set in a graph G is a stable set of maximum size. S is a local maximum stable set if it is a maximum stable set of the subgraph of G spanned by the union of S and N(S), where N(S) is the neighborhood of S. A matching M is uniquely restricted if its saturated vertices induce a subgraph which has a unique perfect matching, namely M itself. One theorem of Nemhauser and Trotter Jr., working as a useful sufficient local optimality condition for the weighted maximum stable set problem, ensures that any local maximum stable set of G can be enlarged to a maximum stable set of G. In on…

The enumeration of minimal connected dominating sets is known to be notoriously hard for general graphs. Currently, it is only known that the sets can be enumerated slightly faster than $\mathcal{O}^{*}(2^n)$ and the algorithm is highly nontrivial. Moreover, it seems that it is hard to use bipartiteness as a structural aide when constructing enumeration algorithms. Hence, to the best of our knowledge, there is no known input-sensitive algorithm for enumerating minimal dominating sets, or one of their related sets, in bipartite graphs better than that of general graphs. In this paper, we provid…
We prove that for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, there exists a constant $C_r$ such that the following is true. Let $\mathcal{F}=\{F_1,F_2,\dots\}$ be an infinite sequence of bipartite graphs such that $|V(F_i)|=i$ and $Δ(F_i)\leq Δ$ hold for all $i$. Then in any $r$-edge coloured complete graph $K_n$, there is a collection of at most $\exp(C_rΔ)$ monochromatic subgraphs, each of which is isomorphic to an element of $\mathcal{F}$, whose vertex sets partition $V(K_n)$. This proves a conjecture of Corsten and Mendonça in a strong form and generalizes results on the multicolour Ramsey numbers of bounded-…
We study the minimum number of maximum matchings in a bipartite multigraph G with parts $X$ and $Y$ under various conditions, refining the well-known lower bound due to M. Hall. When $|X|=n$, every vertex in $X$ has degree at least $k$, and every vertex in $X$ has at least $r$ distinct neighbors, the minimum is $r!(k-r+1)$ when $n\ge r$ and is $[r+n(k-r)]\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(r-i)$ when $n<r$. When every vertex has at least two neighbors and $|Y|-|X|=t\ge 0$, the minimum is $[(n-1)t+2+b](t+1)$, where $b=|E(G)|-2(n+t)$. We also determine the minimum number of maximum matchings in several other situ…
We estimate Ramsey numbers for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. In particular we determine asymptotically the two and three color Ramsey numbers for grid graphs. More generally, we determine asymptotically the two color Ramsey number for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree and the three color Ramsey number for such graphs with the additional assumption that the bipartite graph is balanced.
We study the classical weighted perfect matchings problem for bipartite graphs or sometimes referred to as the assignment problem, i.e., given a weighted bipartite graph $G = (U\cup V,E)$ with weights $w : E \rightarrow \mathcal{R}$ we are interested to find the maximum matching in $G$ with the minimum/maximum weight. In this work we present a new and arguably simpler analysis of one of the earliest techniques developed for solving the assignment problem, namely the auction algorithm. Using our analysis technique we present tighter and improved bounds on the runtime complexity for finding an a…
The bipartite Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(m,n; H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any bipartite graph $G=(X,Y; E)$ with $|X|=m$ and $|Y|=n$ which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we determined $ex(m,n; F_{\ell})$ for arbitrary $\ell$ and appropriately large $n$ with comparing to $m$ and $\ell$, where $F_\ell$ is a linear forest which consists of $\ell$ vertex disjoint paths. Moreover, the extremal graphs have been characterized. Furthermore, these results are used to obtain the maximum spectral radius of bipartite graphs which does not contain $F_{\ell}$ a…
The first Zagreb index $M_{1}$ of a graph is defined as the sum of the square of every vertex degree, and the second Zagreb index $M_{2}$ of a graph is defined as the sum of the product of vertex degrees of each pair of adjacent vertices. In this paper, we study the Zagreb indices of bipartite graphs of order $n$ with $κ(G)=k$ (resp. $κ'(G)=s$) and sharp upper bounds are obtained for $M_1(G)$ and $M_2(G)$ for $G\in \mathcal{V}^k_n$ (resp. $\mathcal{E}^s_n$), where $\mathcal{V}^k_n$ is the set of bipartite graphs of order $n$ with $κ(G)=k$, and $\mathcal{E}^s_n$ is the set of bipartite graphs o…
We prove new results for approximating Graphic TSP. Specifically, we provide a polynomial-time \frac{9}{7}-approximation algorithm for cubic bipartite graphs and a (\frac{9}{7}+\frac{1}{21(k-2)})-approximation algorithm for k-regular bipartite graphs, both of which are improved approximation factors compared to previous results. Our approach involves finding a cycle cover with relatively few cycles, which we are able to do by leveraging the fact that all cycles in bipartite graphs are of even length along with our knowledge of the structure of cubic graphs.
A graph is called dispersable if it has a book embedding in which each page has maximum degree 1 and the number of pages is the maximum degree. Bernhart and Kainen conjectured every k-regular bipartite graph is dispersable. Forty years later, Alam, Bekos, Gronemann, Kaufmann, and Pupyrev have disproved this conjecture, identifying nonplanar 3- and 4-regular bipartite graphs that are not dispersable. They also proved all cubic planar bipartite 3-connected graphs are dispersable and conjectured that the connectivity condition could be relaxed. We prove that every cubic planar bipartite multigrap…
The Erdős-Sós Conjecture states that every graph with average degree more than $k-2$ contains all trees of order $k$ as subgraphs. In this paper, we consider a variation of the above conjecture: studying the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(k,l)$-bipartite trees for given integers $n\ge m$ and $k\ge l$. In particular, we determine that the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(n,m)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs (or all $(k,2)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs, respectively). Furthermore, all these extremal graphs are characte…
A strong edge-coloring of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a partition of its edge set $E$ into induced matchings. We study bipartite graphs with one part having maximum degree at most $3$ and the other part having maximum degree $Δ$. We show that every such graph has a strong edge-coloring using at most $3 Δ$ colors. Our result confirms a conjecture of Brualdi and Quinn Massey ~\cite{[BQ]} for this class of bipartite graphs.
We study the Maximum Bipartite Subgraph (MBS) problem, which is defined as follows. Given a set $S$ of $n$ geometric objects in the plane, we want to compute a maximum-size subset $S'\subseteq S$ such that the intersection graph of the objects in $S'$ is bipartite. We first give a simple $O(n)$-time algorithm that solves the MBS problem on a set of $n$ intervals. We also give an $O(n^2)$-time algorithm that computes a near-optimal solution for the problem on circular-arc graphs. We show that the MBS problem is NP-hard on geometric graphs for which the maximum independent set is NP-hard (hence,…
We consider the bipartite version of the degree/diameter problem, namely, given natural numbers Δ \geq 2 and D \geq 2, find the maximum number Nb(Δ,D) of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree Δ and diameter D. In this context, the Moore bipartite bound Mb(Δ,D) represents an upper bound for Nb(Δ,D). Bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ, diameter D and order Mb(Δ,D), called Moore bipartite graphs, have turned out to be very rare. Therefore, it is very interesting to investigate bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ \geq 2, diameter D \geq 2 and order Mb(Δ,D) - εwith small ε> 0, that is,…
An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,...,t$ is called an interval $t$-coloring if all colors are used, and the colors of edges incident to any vertex of $G$ are distinct and form an interval of integers. In 1991 Erdős constructed a bipartite graph with 27 vertices and maximum degree 13 which has no interval coloring. Erdős's counterexample is the smallest (in a sense of maximum degree) known bipartite graph which is not interval colorable. On the other hand, in 1992 Hansen showed that all bipartite graphs with maximum degree at most 3 have an interval coloring. In this paper we give …
We investigate the terminal-pairability problem in the case when the base graph is a complete bipartite graph, and the demand graph is a (not necessarily bipartite) multigraph on the same vertex set. In computer science, this problem is known as the edge-disjoint paths problem. We improve the lower bound on the maximum value of $Δ(D)$ which still guarantees that the demand graph $D$ has a realization in $K_{n,n}$. We also solve the extremal problem on the number of edges, i.e., we determine the maximum number of edges which guarantees that a demand graph is realizable in $K_{n,n}$.
We investigate the terminal-pairibility problem in the case when the base graph is a complete bipartite graph, and the demand graph is also bipartite with the same color classes. We improve the lower bound on maximum value of $Δ(D)$ which still guarantees that the demand graph $D$ is terminal-pairable in this setting. We also prove a sharp theorem on the maximum number of edges such a demand graph can have.
Let $G$ be a non-bipartite graph which does not contain any odd cycle of length at most $2k+1$. In this paper, we determine the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ if its order is fixed, and the corresponding extremal graph is uniquely characterized. Moreover, if the size of $G$ is given, the maximum $Q$-index of $G$ and the unique extremal graph are also proved.
Given any graph $G$, the (adjacency) spread of $G$ is the maximum absolute difference between any two eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$. In this paper, we resolve a pair of 20-year-old conjectures of Gregory, Hershkowitz, and Kirkland regarding the spread of graphs. The first states that for all positive integers $n$, the $n$-vertex graph $G$ that maximizes spread is the join of a clique and an independent set, with $\lfloor 2n/3 \rfloor$ and $\lceil n/3 \rceil$ vertices, respectively. Using techniques from the theory of graph limits and numerical analysis, we prove this claim for all…
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $2n$ vertices and a perfect matching. We denote by $f(G)$ and $F(G)$ the minimum and maximum forcing number of $G$, respectively. Hetyei obtained that the maximum number of edges of graphs $G$ with a unique perfect matching is $n^2$. We know that $G$ has a unique perfect matching if and only if $f(G)=0$. Along this line, we generalize the classical result to all graphs $G$ with $f(G)=k$ for $0\leq k\leq n-1$, and characterize corresponding extremal graphs as well. Hence we get a non-trivial lower bound of $f(G)$ in terms of the order and size. For bipartite graph…
For graph $G$, $F$ and integer $n$, the generalized Tuán number $ex(n,G,F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $G$ that an $F$-free $n$-vertex graph can have. We study this parameter when both $G$ and $F$ are complete bipartite graphs.
Here we prove that counting maximum matchings in planar, bipartite graphs is #P-complete. This is somewhat surprising in the light that the number of perfect matchings in planar graphs can be computed in polynomial time. We also prove that counting non-necessarily perfect matchings in planar graphs is already #P-complete if the problem is restricted to bipartite graphs. So far hardness was proved only for general, non-necessarily bipartite graphs.
It is well-known that eigenvalues of graphs can be used to describe structural properties and parameters of graphs. A theorem of Nosal states that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph with $m$ edges, then $λ(G)\le \sqrt{m}$, equality holds if and only if $G$ is a complete bipartite graph. Recently, Lin, Ning and Wu [Combin. Probab. Comput. 30 (2021)] proved a generalization for non-bipartite triangle-free graphs. Moreover, Zhai and Shu [Discrete Math. 345 (2022)] presented a further improvement. In this paper, we present an alternative method for proving the improvement by Zhai and Shu. Furthermore…
In this work we study the null space of bipartite graphs without cycles of length multiple of $4$, and its relation to structural properties. We decompose them into two subgraphs: $C_N(G)$ and $C_S(G)$. $C_N(G)$ has perfect matching and its adjacency matrix is nonsingular. $C_S(G)$ has a unique maximum independent set and the dimension of its null space equals the dimension of the null space of $G$. Even more, we show that the fundamental spaces of $G$ are the direct sum of the fundamental spaces of $C_N(G)$ and $C_S(G)$. We also obtain formulas relating the independence number and the matchin…
We address the following question: When a randomly chosen regular bipartite multi--graph is drawn in the plane in the ``standard way'', what is the distribution of its maximum size planar matching (set of non--crossing disjoint edges) and maximum size planar subgraph (set of non--crossing edges which may share endpoints)? The problem is a generalization of the Longest Increasing Sequence (LIS) problem (also called Ulam's problem). We present combinatorial identities which relate the number of r-regular bipartite multi--graphs with maximum planar matching (maximum planar subgraph) of at most d …
For a bipartite graph $G$ with parts $X$ and $Y$, an $X$-interval coloring is a proper edge coloring of $G$ by integers such that the colors on the edges incident to any vertex in $X$ form an interval. Denote by $χ'_{int}(G,X)$ the minimum $k$ such that $G$ has an $X$-interval coloring with $k$ colors. The author and Toft conjectured [Discrete Mathematics 339 (2016), 2628--2639] that there is a polynomial $P(x)$ such that if $G$ has maximum degree at most $Δ$, then $χ'_{int}(G,X) \leq P(Δ)$. In this short note, we prove this conjecture; in fact, we prove that a cubic polynomial suffices. We al…
A strong edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to edges such that every color class induces a matching. We here focus on bipartite graphs whose one part is of maximum degree at most $3$ and the other part is of maximum degree $Δ$. For every such graph, we prove that a strong $4Δ$-edge-coloring can always be obtained. Together with a result of Steger and Yu, this result confirms a conjecture of Faudree, Gyárfás, Schelp and Tuza for this class of graphs.

We consider the bipartite version of the {\it degree/diameter problem}, namely, given natural numbers $d\ge2$ and $D\ge2$, find the maximum number $\N^b(d,D)$ of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $D$. In this context, the bipartite Moore bound $\M^b(d,D)$ represents a general upper bound for $\N^b(d,D)$. Bipartite graphs of order $\M^b(d,D)$ are very rare, and determining $\N^b(d,D)$ still remains an open problem for most $(d,D)$ pairs. This paper is a follow-up to our earlier paper \cite{FPV12}, where a study on bipartite $(d,D,-4)$-graphs (that is, bipartite gr…
We show the existence of rainbow perfect matchings in $μn$-bounded edge colourings of Dirac bipartite graphs, for a sufficiently small $μ>0$. As an application of our results, we obtain several results on the existence of rainbow $k$-factors in Dirac graphs and rainbow spanning subgraphs of bounded maximum degree on graphs with large minimum degree.
If $k\geq 0$, then a $k$-edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to edges of $G$ from the set of $k$ colors, so that adjacent edges receive different colors. A $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of $G$ is maximum if it is the largest among all $k$-edge-colorable subgraphs of $G$. For a graph $G$ and $k\geq 0$, let $ν_{k}(G)$ be the number of edges of a maximum $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of $G$. In 2010 Mkrtchyan et al. proved that if $G$ is a cubic graph, then $ν_2(G)\leq \frac{|V|+2ν_3(G)}{4}$. This result implies that if the cubic graph $G$ contains a perfect matching, in particula…
We estimate the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced bipartite graphs $H$ with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. More precisely, we show that the minimum value of $N$ such that in any $3$-edge colouring of $K_{N,N}$ there is a monochromatic copy of $H$ is at most $\big(3/2+o(1)\big)|V(H)|$. In particular, we determine asymptotically the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced grid graphs.
Interval minors of bipartite graphs were introduced by Jacob Fox in the study of Stanley-Wilf limits. Recently, Mohar, Rafiey, Tayfeh-Rezaie and Wu investigated the maximum number of edges in $K_{k,\ell}$-interval minor free bipartite graphs when $k=2$ and $k=3$. In this paper, we investigate the maximum number of edges in $K_{k,\ell}$-interval minor free bipartite graphs for general $k$ and $\ell$. We also study the maximum number of edges in $K_{\ell_1,\ell_2,\cdots,\ell_t}$-interval minor free multipartite graphs.
We study the Bipartite Unconstrained 0-1 Quadratic Programming Problem (BQP) which is a relaxation of the Unconstrained 0-1 Quadratic Programming Problem (QP). Applications of the BQP include mining discrete patterns from binary data, approximating matrices by rank-one binary matrices, computing cut-norm of a matrix, and solving optimization problems such as maximum weight biclique, bipartite maximum weight cut, maximum weight induced subgraph of a bipartite graph, etc. We propose several classes of heuristic approaches to solve the BQP and discuss a number of construction algorithms, local se…
Let k, p, q be positive integers with k < p < q+1. We prove that the maximum spectral radius of a simple bipartite graph obtained from the complete bipartite graph Kp,q of bipartition orders p and q by deleting k edges is attained when the deleting edges are all incident on a common vertex which is located in the partite set of order q. Our method is based on new sharp upper bounds on the spectral radius of bipartite graphs in terms of their degree sequences.
We show that there exist linear-time algorithms that compute the strong chromatic index and a maximum induced matching of tree-cographs when the decomposition tree is a part of the input. We also show that there exist efficient algorithms for the strong chromatic index of (bipartite) permutation graphs and of chordal bipartite graphs.
In this paper we study the maximum value of the largest eigenvalue for simple bipartite graphs, where the number of edges is given and the number of vertices on each side of the bipartition is given. We state a conjectured solution, which is an analog of the Brualdi- Hoffman conjecture for general graphs, and prove the conjecture in some special cases.
We study the weighted induced bipartite subgraph problem (WIBSP). The goal of WIBSP is, given a graph and nonnegative weights for the nodes, to find a set W of nodes with the maximum total weight such that a subgraph induced by W is bipartite. WIBSP is also referred as to the graph bipartization problem or the odd cycle transversal problem. In this paper, we show that WIBSP can be reduced to the weighted independent set problem (WISP) where the number of nodes becomes twice and the maximum degree increase by 1. WISP is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem. Thus, by using the reduc…
A graph $G$ is $H$-free, if it contains no $H$ as a subgraph. A graph is said to be \emph{$H$-minor free}, if it does not contain $H$ as a minor. In recent years, Nikiforov asked that what is the maximum spectral radius of an $H$-free graph of order $n$? In this paper, we consider about some Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problems on bipartite graphs. In 2015, Zhai, Lin and Gong proved that if $G$ is a bipartite graph with order $n \geq 2k+2$ and $ρ(G)\geq ρ(K_{k,n-k})$, then $G$ contains a $C_{2k+2}$ unless $G \cong K_{k,n-k}$ [Linear Algebra Appl. 471 (2015)]. Firstly, we give a new and more sim…
In this paper we determine the graph whose least eigenvalue of signless Laplacian attains the minimum or maximum among all connected non-bipartite graphs of fixed order and given number of pendant vertices. Thus we obtain a lower bound and an upper bound for the least eigenvalue of signless Laplacian of a graph in terms of the number of pendent vertices.
Let $b(k,\ell,θ)$ be the maximum number of vertices of valency $k$ in a $(k,\ell)$-semiregular bipartite graph with second largest eigenvalue $θ$. We obtain an upper bound for $b(k,\ell,θ)$ for $0 < θ< \sqrt{k-1} + \sqrt{\ell-1}$. This bound is tight when there exists a distance-biregular graph with particular parameters, and we develop the necessary properties of distance-biregular graphs to prove this.
