We address the following question: When a randomly chosen regular bipartite multi--graph is drawn in the plane in the ``standard way'', what is the distribution of its maximum size planar matching (set of non--crossing disjoint edges) and maximum size planar subgraph (set of non--crossing edges which may share endpoints)? The problem is a generalization of the Longest Increasing Sequence (LIS) problem (also called Ulam's problem). We present combinatorial identities which relate the number of $r$-regular bipartite multi--graphs with maximum planar matching (maximum planar subgraph)of at most $d$ edges to a signed sum of restricted lattice walks in $\ZZ^d$, and to the number of pairs of standard Young tableaux of the same shape and with a ``descend--type'' property. Our results are obtained via generalizations of two combinatorial proofs through which Gessel's identity can be obtained (an identity that is crucial in the derivation of a bivariate generating function associated to the distribution of LISs, and key to the analytic attack on Ulam's problem).
We study bipartite graphs partially ordered by the induced subgraph relation. Our goal is to distinguish classes of bipartite graphs which are or are not well-quasi-ordered (wqo) by this relation. Answering an open question from \cite{Ding92}, we prove that $P_7$-free bipartite graphs are not wqo. On the other hand, we show that $P_6$-free bipartite graphs are wqo. We also obtain some partial results on subclasses of bipartite graphs defined by forbidding more than one induced subgraph.
For a bipartite graph G, let h(G) be the largest t such that either G or the bipartite complement of G contain K_{t,t}. For a class F of graphs, let h(F)= min {h(G): G\in F}. We say that a bipartite graph H is strongly acyclic if neither H nor its bipartite complement contain a cycle. By Forb(n, H) we denote a set of bipartite graphs with parts of sizes n each, that do not contain H as an induced bipartite subgraph respecting the sides. One can easily show that h(Forb(n,H))= O(n^{1-s}) for a positive s if H is not strongly acyclic. Here, we prove that h(Forb(n, H)) is linear in n for all stron…
This exposition contains a short and streamlined proof of the recent result of Kwan, Letzter, Sudakov and Tran that every triangle-free graph with minimum degree $d$ contains an induced bipartite subgraph with average degree $Ω(\ln d/\ln\ln d)$.
Let G be a simple balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices, $δ= δ(G)/n$, and $ρ={δ+ \sqrt{2 δ-1} \over 2}$. If $δ> 1/2$ then it has a $\lfloor ρn \rfloor$-regular spanning subgraph. The statement is nearly tight.
We prove that every bipartite graph of sufficiently large average degree has either a $K_{t,t}$-subgraph or an induced subgraph of average degree at least $t$ and girth at least $6$. We conjecture that "$6$" can be replaced by "$k$", which strengthens a conjecture of Thomassen. In support of this conjecture, we show that it holds for regular graphs.
In this note, we answer the following question of Foucaud, Krivelevich and Perarnau. What is the size of the largest $K_{r,s}$-free subgraph one can guarantee in every graph $G$ with $m$ edges? We also discuss the analogous problem for hypergraphs.
This paper establishes sufficient conditions that force a graph to contain a bipartite subgraph with a given structural property. In particular, let $β$ be any of the following graph parameters: Hadwiger number, Hajós number, treewidth, pathwidth, and treedepth. In each case, we show that there exists a function $f$ such that every graph $G$ with $β(G)\geq f(k)$ contains a bipartite subgraph $\hat{G}\subseteq G$ with $β(\hat{G})\geq k$.
In this paper, we investigate the set of sizes of induced subgraphs of bipartite graphs. We introduce the definition of $C$-$Bipartite$-$Ramsey$ graphs, which is closely related to Ramsey graphs and prove that in `most' cases, these graphs have multiplication tables of $Ω(e(G))$ in size. We apply our result to give direct evidence to the conjecture that the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ is the minimiser of the multiplication table on $n^2$ edges raised by Narayanan, Sahasrabudhe and Tomon.
Polynomial algorithms are given for the following two problems: given a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, where $m \ge 3 n^{3/2}$, find a complete balanced bipartite subgraph with parts about $\ln n/(\ln (n^2/m))$, given a graph with $n$ vertices, find a decomposition of its edges into complete balanced bipartite graphs having altogether $O(n^2 / \ln n)$ vertices. Previous proofs of the existence of such objects, due to Kővári-Sós-Turán, Chung-Erdős-Spencer, Bublitz and Tuza were non-constructive.
Motivated by the concept of well-covered graphs, we define a graph to be well-bicovered if every vertex-maximal bipartite subgraph has the same order (which we call the bipartite number). We first give examples of them, compare them with well-covered graphs, and characterize those with small or large bipartite number. We then consider graph operations including the union, join, and lexicographic and cartesian products. Thereafter we consider simplicial vertices and 3-colored graphs where every vertex is in triangle, and conclude by characterizing the maximal outerplanar graphs that are well-bi…
It was proved by Scott that for every $k\ge2$, there exists a constant $c(k)>0$ such that for every bipartite $n$-vertex graph $G$ without isolated vertices, there exists an induced subgraph $H$ of order at least $c(k)n$ such that $\textrm{deg}_H(v) \equiv 1\pmod{k}$ for each $v \in H$. Scott conjectured that $c(k) = Ω(1/k)$, which would be tight up to the multiplicative constant. We confirm this conjecture.
Let G be a random subgraph of the n-cube where each edge appears randomly and independently with probability p. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of G is almost surely λ_1(G)= (1+o(1)) max(Δ^{1/2}(G),np), where Δ(G) is the maximum degree of G and o(1) term tends to zero as max (Δ^{1/2}(G), np) tends to infinity.
The problem of finding dense induced bipartite subgraphs in $H$-free graphs has a long history, and was posed 30 years ago by Erdős, Faudree, Pach and Spencer. In this paper, we obtain several results in this direction. First we prove that any $K_t$-free graph with minimum degree at least $d$ contains an induced bipartite subgraph of minimum degree at least $c_t \log d/\log \log d$, confirming (asymptotically) several conjectures by Esperet, Kang and Thomassé. Complementing this result, we further obtain optimal bounds for this problem in the case of dense triangle-free graphs, and we also ans…
We study the polyhedral properties of three problems of constructing an optimal complete bipartite subgraph (a biclique) in a bipartite graph. In the first problem we consider a balanced biclique with the same number of vertices in both parts and arbitrary edge weights. In the other two problems we are dealing with unbalanced subgraphs of maximum and minimum weight with nonnegative edges. All three problems are established to be NP-hard. We study the polytopes and the cone decompositions of these problems and their 1-skeletons. We describe the adjacency criterion in 1-skeleton of the polytope …
Given a finite simple graph one can associate the edge ideal. In this paper we prove that a graded Betti number of the edge ideal does not vanish if the original graph contains a set of complete bipartite subgraphs with some conditions. Also we give a combinatorial description for the projective dimension of the edge ideals of unmixed bipartite graphs.
A bipartite graph on 2n vertices is bipancyclic if it contains cycles of all even lengths from 4 to 2n. In this paper we prove that the random bipartite graph $G(n,n,p)$ with $p(n)\gg n^{-2/3}$ asymptotically almost surely has the following resilience property: Every Hamiltonian subgraph $G'$ of $G(n,n,p)$ with more than $(1/2+o(1))n^2p$ edges is bipancyclic. This result is tight in two ways. First, the range of $p$ is essentially best possible. Second, the proportion 1/2 of edges cannot be reduced. Our result extends a classical theorem of Mitchem and Schmeichel.
Given $m$ points and $n$ hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, if there are many incidences, we expect to find a big cluster $K_{r,s}$ in their incidence graph. Apfelbaum and Sharir found lower and upper bounds for the largest size of $rs$, which only match in three dimensions. In this paper we close the gap in four and five dimensions, up to some logarithmic factors.

Induced bipartite subgraphs of maximal vertex cardinality are an essential concept for the analysis of graphs. Yet, discovering them in large graphs is known to be computationally hard. Therefore, we consider in this work a weaker notion of this problem, where we discard the maximality constraint in favor of inclusion maximality. Thus, we aim to discover locally maximal bipartite subgraphs. For this, we present three heuristic approaches to extract such subgraphs and compare their results to the solutions of the global problem. For the latter, we employ the algorithmic strength of fast SAT-sol…
For the Erdős-Rényi random graph G(n,p), we give a precise asymptotic formula for the size of a largest vertex subset in G(n,p) that induces a subgraph with average degree at most t, provided that p = p(n) is not too small and t = t(n) is not too large. In the case of fixed t and p, we find that this value is asymptotically almost surely concentrated on at most two explicitly given points. This generalises a result on the independence number of random graphs. For both the upper and lower bounds, we rely on large deviations inequalities for the binomial distribution.
A unit disk graph is the intersection graph of disks of equal radii in the plane. The class of unit disk graphs is hereditary, and therefore admits a characterization in terms of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. In spite of quite active study of unit disk graphs very little is known about minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for this class. We found only finitely many minimal non unit disk graphs in the literature. In this paper we study in a systematic way forbidden induced subgraphs for the class of unit disk graphs. We develop several structural and geometrical tools, and use them to rev…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of fixed graphs and let $d$ be large enough. For every $d$-regular graph $G$, we study the existence of a spanning $\mathcal{F}$-free subgraph of $G$ with large minimum degree. This problem is well-understood if $\mathcal{F}$ does not contain bipartite graphs. Here we provide asymptotically tight results for many families of bipartite graphs such as cycles or complete bipartite graphs.
We study the weighted induced bipartite subgraph problem (WIBSP). The goal of WIBSP is, given a graph and nonnegative weights for the nodes, to find a set W of nodes with the maximum total weight such that a subgraph induced by W is bipartite. WIBSP is also referred as to the graph bipartization problem or the odd cycle transversal problem. In this paper, we show that WIBSP can be reduced to the weighted independent set problem (WISP) where the number of nodes becomes twice and the maximum degree increase by 1. WISP is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem. Thus, by using the reduc…
The Erdős-Sós Conjecture states that every graph with average degree more than $k-2$ contains all trees of order $k$ as subgraphs. In this paper, we consider a variation of the above conjecture: studying the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(k,l)$-bipartite trees for given integers $n\ge m$ and $k\ge l$. In particular, we determine that the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(n,m)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs (or all $(k,2)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs, respectively). Furthermore, all these extremal graphs are characte…
Consider the random process in which the edges of a graph $G$ are added one by one in a random order. A classical result states that if $G$ is the complete graph $K_{2n}$ or the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, then typically a perfect matching appears at the moment at which the last isolated vertex disappears. We extend this result to arbitrary $k$-regular bipartite graphs $G$ on $2n$ vertices for all $k = ω\left( \frac{n}{\log^{1/3} n} \right)$. Surprisingly, this is not the case for smaller values of $k$. Using a construction due to Goel, Kapralov and Khanna, we show that there exist bip…
Let S and T be vectors of positive integers with the same sum. We study the uniform distribution on the space of simple bipartite graphs with degree sequence S in one part and T in the other; equivalently, binary matrices with row sums S and column sums T. In particular, we find precise formulae for the probabilities that a given bipartite graph is edge-disjoint from, a subgraph of, or an induced subgraph of a random graph in the class. We also give similar formulae for the uniform distribution on the set of simple directed graphs with out-degrees S and in-degrees T. In each case, the graphs o…
We study a restricted form of list colouring, for which every pair of lists that correspond to adjacent vertices may not share more than one colour. The optimal list size such that a proper list colouring is always possible given this restriction, we call separation choosability. We show for bipartite graphs that separation choosability increases with (the logarithm of) the minimum degree. This strengthens results of Molloy and Thron and, partially, of Alon. One attempt to drop the bipartiteness assumption precipitates a natural class of Ramsey-type questions, of independent interest. For exam…
A graph $G$ is $H$-free, if it contains no $H$ as a subgraph. A graph is said to be \emph{$H$-minor free}, if it does not contain $H$ as a minor. In recent years, Nikiforov asked that what is the maximum spectral radius of an $H$-free graph of order $n$? In this paper, we consider about some Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problems on bipartite graphs. In 2015, Zhai, Lin and Gong proved that if $G$ is a bipartite graph with order $n \geq 2k+2$ and $ρ(G)\geq ρ(K_{k,n-k})$, then $G$ contains a $C_{2k+2}$ unless $G \cong K_{k,n-k}$ [Linear Algebra Appl. 471 (2015)]. Firstly, we give a new and more sim…
An old problem of Erdős, Fajtlowicz and Staton asks for the order of a largest induced regular subgraph that can be found in every graph on n vertices. Motivated by this problem, we consider the order of such a subgraph in a typical graph on n vertices, i.e., in a binomial random graph G(n,1/2). We prove that with high probability a largest induced regular subgraph of G(n,1/2) has about n^{2/3} vertices.
Let $α_{1} (G)$ denote the maximum size of an edge set that contains at most one edge from each triangle of $G$. Let $τ_{B} (G)$ denote the minimum size of an edge set whose deletion makes $G$ bipartite. It was conjectured by Lehel and independently by Puleo that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le n^2/4$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$. Puleo showed that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le 5n^2/16$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$. In this note, we improve the bound by showing that $α_{1} (G) + τ_{B} (G) \le 4403n^2/15000$ for every $n$-vertex graph $G$.
This paper examines the structure of the largest subgraphs of the Erdős-Rényi random graph, $G_{n,p}$, with a given matching number. This extends a result of Erdős and Gallai who, in 1959, gave a classification of the structures of the largest subgraphs of $K_n$ with a given matching number. We show that their result extends to $G_{n,p}$ with high probability when $p\ge \frac{8 \ln n}{n}$ or $p \ll \frac{1}{n}$, but that it does not extend (again with high probability) when $\frac{4\ln(2e)}{n} < p< \frac{\ln n}{3n}$.
We study the Maximum Bipartite Subgraph (MBS) problem, which is defined as follows. Given a set $S$ of $n$ geometric objects in the plane, we want to compute a maximum-size subset $S'\subseteq S$ such that the intersection graph of the objects in $S'$ is bipartite. We first give a simple $O(n)$-time algorithm that solves the MBS problem on a set of $n$ intervals. We also give an $O(n^2)$-time algorithm that computes a near-optimal solution for the problem on circular-arc graphs. We show that the MBS problem is NP-hard on geometric graphs for which the maximum independent set is NP-hard (hence,…
We consider a sparse random subraph of the $n$-cube where each edge appears independently with small probability $p(n) =O(n^{-1+o(1)})$. In the most interesting regime when $p(n)$ is not exponentially small we prove that the largest eigenvalue of the graph is asymtotically equal to the square root of the maximum degree.
We prove inequalities between the densities of various bipartite subgraphs in signed graphs and graphons. One of the main inequalities is that the density of any bipartite graph with girth r cannot exceed the density of the r-cycle. This study is motivated by Sidorenko's conjecture, which states that the density of a bipartite graph F with m edges in any graph G is at least the m-th power of the edge density of G. Another way of stating this is that the graph G with given edge density minimizing the number of copies of F is, asymptotically, a random graph. We prove that this is true locally, i…
An old conjecture of Erdős and McKay states that if all homogeneous sets in an $n$-vertex graph are of order $O(\log n)$ then the graph contains induced subgraphs of each size from $\{0,1,\ldots, Ω(n^2)\}$. We prove a bipartite analogue of the conjecture: if all balanced homogeneous sets in an $n \times n$ bipartite graph are of order $O(\log n)$ then the graph contains induced subgraphs of each size from $\{0,1,\ldots, Ω(n^2)\}$.
We give a simple proof that every $n$-vertex graph $d$-regular graph that does not contain a fixed bipartite graph as a subgraph has an induced matching of size $Ω((n/d)(\log d))$.
For a graph $G$, let $f_2(G)$ denote the largest number of vertices in a $2$-regular subgraph of $G$. We determine the minimum of $f_2(G)$ over $3$-regular $n$-vertex simple graphs $G$. To do this, we prove that every $3$-regular multigraph with exactly $c$ cut-edges has a $2$-regular subgraph that omits at most $\max\{0,\lfloor (c-1)/2\rfloor\}$ vertices. More generally, every $n$-vertex multigraph with maximum degree $3$ and $m$ edges has a $2$-regular subgraph that omits at most $\max\{0,\lfloor (3n-2m+c-1)/2\rfloor\}$ vertices. These bounds are sharp; we describe the extremal multigraphs.
We investigate the following generalisation of the 'multiplication table problem' of Erdős: given a bipartite graph with $m$ edges, how large is the set of sizes of its induced subgraphs? Erdős's problem of estimating the number of distinct products $ab$ with $a,b \le n$ is precisely the problem under consideration when the graph in question is the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$. In this note, we prove that the set of sizes of the induced subgraphs of any bipartite graph with $m$ edges contains $Ω(m/(\log m)^{12})$ distinct elements.
A conjecture of Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov states that, for any graph $F$, there is a constant $c_F > 0$ such that if $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $Δ$, then $χ(G) \leq c_F Δ/ \logΔ$. Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov verified this conjecture for a class of graphs $F$ that includes all bipartite graphs. Moreover, it follows from recent work by Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni that if $G$ is $K_{t,t}$-free, then $χ(G) \leq (t + o(1)) Δ/ \logΔ$ as $Δ\to \infty$. We improve this bound to $(1+o(1)) Δ/\log Δ$, making the constant factor independent of $t$. We further extend our result …
If $k\geq 0$, then a $k$-edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to edges of $G$ from the set of $k$ colors, so that adjacent edges receive different colors. A $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of $G$ is maximum if it is the largest among all $k$-edge-colorable subgraphs of $G$. For a graph $G$ and $k\geq 0$, let $ν_{k}(G)$ be the number of edges of a maximum $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of $G$. In 2010 Mkrtchyan et al. proved that if $G$ is a cubic graph, then $ν_2(G)\leq \frac{|V|+2ν_3(G)}{4}$. This result implies that if the cubic graph $G$ contains a perfect matching, in particula…
We prove that for every non-trivial hereditary family of graphs ${\cal P}$ and for every fixed $p \in (0,1)$, the maximum possible number of edges in a subgraph of the random graph $G(n,p)$ which belongs to ${\cal P}$ is, with high probability, $$ \left(1-\frac{1}{k-1}+o(1)\right)p{n \choose 2}, $$ where $k$ is the minimum chromatic number of a graph that does not belong to ${\cal P}$.
We study random subgraphs of the 2-dimensional Hamming graph H(2,n), which is the Cartesian product of two complete graphs on $n$ vertices. Let $p$ be the edge probability, and write $p=\frac{1+\vep}{2(n-1)}$ for some $\vep\in \R$. In Borgs et al., Random subgraphs of finite graphs: I. The scaling window under the triangle condition, Rand. Struct. Alg. (2005), and in Borgs et al., Random subgraphs of finite graphs: II. The lace expansion and the triangle condition, Ann. Probab. (2005), the size of the largest connected component was estimated precisely for a large class of graphs including H(2…
A graph is locally irregular if no two adjacent vertices have the same degree. The irregular chromatic index $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of locally irregular subgraphs needed to edge-decompose $G$. Not all graphs have such a decomposition, but Baudon, Bensmail, Przybyło, and Woźniak conjectured that if $G$ can be decomposed into locally irregular subgraphs, then $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 3$. In support of this conjecture, Przybyło showed that $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 3$ holds whenever $G$ has minimum degree at least $10^{10}$. Here we prove that every bipartite graph $G$ whi…
Erdős posed the problem of finding conditions on a graph $G$ that imply the largest number of edges in a triangle-free subgraph is equal to the largest number of edges in a bipartite subgraph. We generalize this problem to general cases. Let $δ_r$ be the least number so that any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ_rn$ has the property $P_{r-1}(G)=K_rf(G),$ where $P_{r-1}(G)$ is the largest number of edges in an $(r-1)$-partite subgraph and $K_rf(G)$ is the largest number of edges in a $K_r$-free subgraph. We show that $\frac{3r-4}{3r-1}<δ_r\le\frac{4(3r-7)(r-1)+1}{4(r-2)(3r-4)}$ w…
The bipartite Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(m,n; H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any bipartite graph $G=(X,Y; E)$ with $|X|=m$ and $|Y|=n$ which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we determined $ex(m,n; F_{\ell})$ for arbitrary $\ell$ and appropriately large $n$ with comparing to $m$ and $\ell$, where $F_\ell$ is a linear forest which consists of $\ell$ vertex disjoint paths. Moreover, the extremal graphs have been characterized. Furthermore, these results are used to obtain the maximum spectral radius of bipartite graphs which does not contain $F_{\ell}$ a…
Let $Γ=(G,σ)$ be a signed graph, where $σ$ is the sign function on the edges of $G$. The adjacency matrix of $Γ=(G, σ)$ is a square matrix $A(Γ)=A(G, σ)=\left(a_{i j}^σ\right)$, where $a_{i j}^σ=σ\left(v_{i} v_{j}\right) a_{i j}$. In this paper, we determine the eigenvalues of the signed complete bipartite graphs. Let $(K_{p, q},σ)$, $p\leq q$, be a signed complete bipartite graph with bipartition $(U_p, V_q)$, where $U_p=\{u_1,u_2,\ldots,u_p\}$ and $V_q=\{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_q\}$. Let $(K_{p, q},σ)[U_r\cup V_s]$, $r\leq p$ and $s\leq q $, be an induced signed subgraph on minimum vertices $r+s$, …
We consider the problem of maximising the largest eigenvalue of subgraphs of the hypercube $Q_d$ of a given order. We believe that in most cases, Hamming balls are maximisers, and our results support this belief. We show that the Hamming balls of radius $o(d)$ have largest eigenvalue that is within $1 + o(1)$ of the maximum value. We also prove that Hamming balls with fixed radius maximise the largest eigenvalue exactly, rather than asymptotically, when $d$ is sufficiently large. Our proofs rely on the method of compressions.
A hereditary class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ is \emph{$χ$-bounded} if there exists a function $f$ such that every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ satisfies $χ(G) \leq f(ω(G))$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and the clique number of $G$, respectively. As one of the first results about $χ$-bounded classes, Gyárfás proved in 1985 that if $G$ is $P_t$-free, i.e., does not contain a $t$-vertex path as an induced subgraph, then $χ(G) \leq (t-1)^{ω(G)-1}$. In 2017, Chudnovsky, Scott, and Seymour proved that $C_{\geq t}$-free graphs, i.e., graphs that exclude induced cycles with at least $t…
Let d = (d1, d2, ..., dn) be a vector of non-negative integers with even sum. We prove some basic facts about the structure of a random graph with degree sequence d, including the probability of a given subgraph or induced subgraph. Although there are many results of this kind, they are restricted to the sparse case with only a few exceptions. Our focus is instead on the case where the average degree is approximately a constant fraction of n. Our approach is the multidimensional saddle-point method. This extends the enumerative work of McKay and Wormald (1990) and is analogous to the theory de…
