It was proved by Scott that for every $k\ge2$, there exists a constant $c(k)>0$ such that for every bipartite $n$-vertex graph $G$ without isolated vertices, there exists an induced subgraph $H$ of order at least $c(k)n$ such that $\textrm{deg}_H(v) \equiv 1\pmod{k}$ for each $v \in H$. Scott conjectured that $c(k) = Ω(1/k)$, which would be tight up to the multiplicative constant. We confirm this conjecture.
A large body of research in graph theory concerns the induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number, and especially which induced cycles must occur. In this paper, we unify and substantially extend results from a number of previous papers, showing that, for every positive integer k, every graph with large chromatic number contains either a large complete subgraph or induced cycles of all lengths modulo k. As an application, we prove two conjectures of Kalai and Meshulam from the 1990's connecting the chromatic number of a graph with the homology of its independence complex.
We show that with high probability the random graph $G_{n, 1/2}$ has an induced subgraph of linear size, all of whose degrees are congruent to $r\pmod q$ for any fixed $r$ and $q\geq 2$. More generally, the same is true for any fixed distribution of degrees modulo $q$. Finally, we show that with high probability we can partition the vertices of $G_{n, 1/2}$ into $q+1$ parts of nearly equal size, each of which induces a subgraph all of whose degrees are congruent to $r\pmod q$. Our results resolve affirmatively a conjecture of Scott, who addressed the case $q=2$.
We study the subgraph of the Young-Fibonacci graph induced by elements with odd $f$-statistic (the $f$-statistic of an element $w$ of a differential graded poset is the number of saturated chains from the minimal element of the poset to $w$). We show that this subgraph is a binary tree. Moreover, the odd residues of the $f$-statistics in a row of this tree equidistibute modulo any power two. This is equivalent to a purely number theoretic result about the equidistribution of residues modulo powers of two among the products of distinct odd numbers less than a fixed number.
We characterise the structure of those graphs of a given order which maximise the number of connected induced subgraphs for seven different graph classes, each with other prescribed parameters like minimum degree, independence number, vertex cover number, vertex connectivity, edge connectivity, chromatic number, number of bridges, thereby contributing to filling a gap in the literature.
A graph is (m, k)-colourable if its vertices can be coloured with m colours such that the maximum degree of any subgraph induced on ver- tices receiving the same colour is at most k. The k-defective chromatic number for a graph is the least positive integer m for which the graph is (m, k)-colourable. All triangle-free graphs on 8 or fewer vertices are (2, 1)-colourable. There are exactly four triangle-free graphs of order 9 which have 1-defective chromatic number 3. We show that these four graphs appear as subgraphs in almost all triangle-free graphs of order 10 with 1-defective chromatic numb…
As an extension of the Brooks theorem, Catlin in 1979 showed that if $H$ is neither an odd cycle nor a complete graph with maximum degree $Δ(H)$, then $H$ has a vertex $Δ(H)$-coloring such that one of the color classes is a maximum independent set. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order at least $2$. A $G$-free $k$-coloring of a graph $H$ is a partition of the vertex set of $H$ into $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that $H[V_i]$, the subgraph induced on $V_i$, does not contain any subgraph isomorphic to $G$. As a generalization of Catlin's theorem we show that a graph $H$ has a $G$-free $\lceil{Δ(H)\over …
For graphs F and G an F-matching in G is a subgraph of G consisting of pairwise vertex disjoint copies of F. The number of F-matchings in G is denoted by s(F,G). We show that for every fixed positive integer m and every fixed tree F, the probability that s(F,T_n) = 0 mod m, where T_n is a random labeled tree with n vertices, tends to one exponentially fast as n grows to infinity. A similar result is proven for induced F-matchings. This generalizes a recent result of Wagner who showed that the number of independent sets in a random labeled tree is almost surely a zero residue.
We establish a new criterion for a bigraph to have a subgraph with prescribed degree conditions. We show that the bigraph $G[X,Y]$ has a spanning subgraph $F$ such that $g(x)\leq deg_F(x) \leq f(x)$ for $x\in X$ and $deg_F(y) \leq f(y)$ for $y\in Y$ if and only if $\sum\nolimits_{b\in B} f(b)\geq \sum\nolimits_{a\in A} \max \big\{0, g(a) - deg_{G-B}(a)\big\}$ for $A\subseteq X, B\subseteq Y$. Using Folkman-Fulkerson's Theorem, Cymer and Kano found a different criterion for the existence of such a subgraph (Graphs Combin. 32 (2016), 2315--2322). Our proof is self-contained and relies on alterna…
The residue of a graph is the number of zeros left after iteratively applying the Havel-Hakimi algorithm to its degree sequence. Favaron, Mahéo, and Saclé showed that the residue is a lower bound on the independence number. The Maxine heuristic reduces a graph to an independent set of size $M$. It has been shown that given a graph $G$, $M$ is bounded between the independence number and the residue of a graph for any application of the Maxine heuristic. We improve upon a forbidden subgraph classification of graphs such that $M$ is equal to the independence number given by Barrus and Molnar in 2…
A graph is (m,k)-colourable if its vertices can be coloured with m colours such that the maximum degree of the subgraph induced on the set of all vertices receiving the same colour is at most k. The k-defective chromatic number $χ_k(G)$ is the least positive integer $m$ for which graph G is (m,k)-colourable. Let f(m,k;tfp) be the smallest order of a triangle-free planar graph such that $χ_k(G)$=m. In this paper we show that f(3,1;tfp)=11.
We show that a graph has an orientation under which every circuit of even length is clockwise odd if and only if the graph contains no subgraph which is, after the contraction of at most one circuit of odd length, an even subdivision of K_{2,3}. In fact we give a more general characterisation of graphs that have an orientation under which every even circuit has a prescribed clockwise parity. This problem was motivated by the study of Pfaffian graphs, which are the graphs that have an orientation under which every alternating circuit is clockwise odd. Their significance is that they are precise…
Kühn, Osthus, and Townsend asked whether there exists a constant $C$ such that every strongly $Ct$-connected tournament contains all possible $1$-factors with at most $t$ components. We answer this question in the affirmative. This is best possible up to constant. In addition, we can ensure that each cycle in the $1$-factor contains a prescribed vertex. Indeed, we derive this result from a more general result on partitioning digraphs which are close to semicomplete. More precisely, we prove that there exists a constant $C$ such that for any $k\geq 1$, if a strongly $Ck^4t$-connected digraph $D…
A graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if it contains no copy of $H$ as a subgraph but the addition of any new edge to $G$ creates a copy of $H$. In this paper we are interested in the function sat$_{t}(n,p)$, defined to be the minimum number of edges that a $K_{p}$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices can have if it has minimum degree at least $t$. We prove that sat$_{t}(n,p) = tn - O(1)$, where the limit is taken as $n$ tends to infinity. This confirms a conjecture of Bollobás when $p = 3$. We also present constructions for graphs that give new upper bounds for sat$_{t}(n,p)$ and discuss an analogous probl…
A minor-model of a graph $H$ in a graph $G$ is a subgraph of $G$ that can be contracted to $H$. We prove that for a positive integer $\ell$ and a non-empty planar graph $H$ with at least $\ell-1$ connected components, there exists a function $f_{H, \ell}:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ satisfying the property that every graph $G$ with a family of vertex subsets $Z_1, \ldots, Z_m$ contains either $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint minor-models of $H$ each intersecting at least $\ell$ sets among prescribed vertex sets, or a vertex subset of size at most $f_{H, \ell}(k)$ that meets all such minor-mod…
Let $G$ be a graph, and $g,f:V(G)\rightarrow Z^{+}$ with $g(x)\leq f(x)$ for each $x\in V(G)$. We say that $G$ admits all fractional $(g,f)$-factors if $G$ contains a fractional $r$-factor for every $r:V(G)\rightarrow Z^{+}$ with $g(x)\leq r(x)\leq f(x)$ for any $x\in V(G)$. Let $H$ be a subgraph of $G$. We say that $G$ has all fractional $(g,f)$-factors excluding $H$ if for every $r:V(G)\rightarrow Z^{+}$ with $g(x)\leq r(x)\leq f(x)$ for all $x\in V(G)$, $G$ has a fractional $r$-factor $F_h$ such that $E(H)\cap E(F_h)=\emptyset$, where $h:E(G)\rightarrow [0,1]$ is a function. In this paper, …
An $H_n$-factor of a graph $G$ is defined to be a spanning subgraph $F$ of $G$ such that each vertex has degree belonging to the set $\{1,3,5,...,2n-1,2n\}$ in $F$. In this paper, we investigate $H_n$-factors of graphs by using Lovász's structural descriptions to the degree prescribed subgraph problem. We find some sufficient conditions for the existence of an $H_n$-factor of a graph. In particular, we make progress on the characterization problem for a special family of graphs proposed by Cui and Kano in 1988.
We investigate families of graphs and graphons (graph limits) that are defined by a finite number of prescribed subgraph densities. Our main focus is the case when the family contains only one element, i.e., a unique structure is forced by finitely many subgraph densities. Generalizing results of Turan, Erdos-Simonovits and Chung-Graham-Wilson, we construct numerous finitely forcible graphons. Most of these fall into two categories: one type has an algebraic structure and the other type has an iterated (fractal-like) structure. We also give some necessary conditions for forcibility, which impl…
We determine the asymptotic behavior of the maximum subgraph density of large random graphs with a prescribed degree sequence. The result applies in particular to the Erdős-Rényi model, where it settles a conjecture of Hajek [IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 36 (1990) 1398-1414]. Our proof consists in extending the notion of balanced loads from finite graphs to their local weak limits, using unimodularity. This is a new illustration of the objective method described by Aldous and Steele [In Probability on Discrete Structures (2004) 1-72 Springer].

Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. Let $q$ be a prime power such that $q \equiv 1 \pmod {k}$ if $q$ is even, or, $q \equiv 1 \pmod {2k}$ if $q$ is odd. The generalized Paley graph of order $q$, $G_k(q)$, is the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $ab$ is an edge if and only if ${a-b}$ is a $k$-th power residue. We provide a formula, in terms of finite field hypergeometric functions, for the number of complete subgraphs of order four contained in $G_k(q)$, $\mathcal{K}_4(G_k(q))$, which holds for all $k$. This generalizes the results of Evans, Pulham and Sheehan on the original ($k$=2) Paley …
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity and $Z(R)$ and ${\rm Reg}(R)$ be the set of zero-divisors and non-zero zero-divisors of $R$, respectively. We denote by $T(Γ(R))$, the total graph of $R$, a simple graph with the vertex set $R$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x+y\in Z(R)$. The induced subgraphs on $Z(R)$ and ${\rm Reg}(R)$ are denoted by $Z(Γ(R))$ and $Reg(Γ(R))$, respectively. These graphs were first introduced by D.F. Anderson and A. Badawi in 2008. In this paper, we prove the following result: let $R$ be a finite ring and one of the following condit…
We investigate the maximum size of graph families on a common vertex set of cardinality $n$ such that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two members of the family satisfies some prescribed condition. We solve the problem completely for infinitely many values of $n$ when the prescribed condition is connectivity or $2$-connectivity, Hamiltonicity or the containment of a spanning star. We also investigate local conditions that can be certified by looking at only a subset of the vertex set. In these cases a capacity-type asymptotic invariant is defined and when the condition is to co…

Generalizing well-known results of Erdős and Lovász, we show that every graph $G$ contains a spanning $k$-partite subgraph $H$ with $λ(H)\geq \lceil{}\frac{k-1}{k}λ(G)\rceil$, where $λ(G)$ is the edge-connectivity of $G$. In particular, together with a well-known result due to Nash-Williams and Tutte, this implies that every $7$-edge-connected graphs contains a spanning bipartite graph whose edge set decomposes into two edge-disjoint spanning trees. We show that this is best possible as it does not hold for infintely many $6$-edge-connected graphs. For directed graphs, it was shown in [6] that…
Let $G = (V, E)$ be a connected graph with maximum degree $k\geq 3$ distinct from $K_{k+1}$. Given integers $s \geq 2$ and $p_1,\ldots,p_s\geq 0$, $G$ is said to be $(p_1, \dots, p_s)$-partitionable if there exists a partition of $V$ into sets~$V_1,\ldots,V_s$ such that $G[V_i]$ is $p_i$-degenerate for $i\in\{1,\ldots,s\}$. In this paper, we prove that we can find a $(p_1, \dots, p_s)$-partition of $G$ in $O(|V| + |E|)$-time whenever $1\geq p_1, \dots, p_s \geq 0$ and $p_1 + \dots + p_s \geq k - s$. This generalizes a result of Bonamy et al. (MFCS, 2017) and can be viewed as an algorithmic ext…
In the analysis of large-scale network data, a fundamental operation is the comparison of observed phenomena to the predictions provided by null models: when we find an interesting structure in a family of real networks, it is important to ask whether this structure is also likely to arise in random networks with similar characteristics to the real ones. A long-standing challenge in network analysis has been the relative scarcity of reasonable null models for networks; arguably the most common such model has been the configuration model, which starts with a graph $G$ and produces a random grap…
We study the Turán number of long cycles in random graphs and in pseudo-random graphs. Denote by $ex(G(n,p),H)$ the random variable counting the number of edges in a largest subgraph of $G(n,p)$ without a copy of $H$. We determine the asymptotic value of $ex(G(n,p), C_t)$ where $C_t$ is a cycle of length $t$, for $p\geq \frac Cn$ and $A \log n \leq t \leq (1 - \varepsilon)n$. The typical behavior of $ex(G(n,p), C_t)$ depends substantially on the parity of $t$. In particular, our results match the classical result of Woodall on the Turán number of long cycles, and can be seen as its random vers…
We investigate a class of 2-edge coloured bipartite graphs known as alternating signed bipartite graphs (ASBGs) that encode the information in alternating sign matrices. The central question is when a given bipartite graph admits an ASBG-colouring; a 2-edge colouring such that the resulting graph is an ASBG. We introduce the concept of a difference-1 colouring, a relaxation of the concept of an ASBG-colouring, and present a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for when a graph admits a difference-1 colouring. The relationship between distinct difference-1 colourings of a particular graph…
