We study random subgraphs of the 2-dimensional Hamming graph H(2,n), which is the Cartesian product of two complete graphs on $n$ vertices. Let $p$ be the edge probability, and write $p=\frac{1+\vep}{2(n-1)}$ for some $\vep\in \R$. In Borgs et al., Random subgraphs of finite graphs: I. The scaling window under the triangle condition, Rand. Struct. Alg. (2005), and in Borgs et al., Random subgraphs of finite graphs: II. The lace expansion and the triangle condition, Ann. Probab. (2005), the size of the largest connected component was estimated precisely for a large class of graphs including H(2,n) for $\vep\leq ΛV^{-1/3}$, where $Λ> 0$ is a constant and $V=n^2$ denotes the number of vertices in H(2,n). Until now, no matching lower bound on the size in the supercritical regime has been obtained.
In this paper we prove that, when $\vep\gg (\log{V})^{1/3} V^{-1/3}$, then the largest connected component has size close to $2\vep V$ with high probability. We thus obtain a law of large numbers for the largest connected component size, and show that the corresponding values of $p$ are supercritical. Barring the factor $(\log{\chs{V}})^{1/3}$, this identifies the size of the largest connected component all the way down to the critical $p$ window.
The 2-dimensional Hamming graph H(2,n) consists of the $n^2$ vertices $(i,j)$, $1\leq i,j\leq n$, two vertices being adjacent when they share a common coordinate. We examine random subgraphs of H(2,n) in percolation with edge probability $p$, so that the average degree $2(n-1)p=1+ε$. Previous work by van der Hofstad and Luczak had shown that in the barely supercritical region $n^{-2/3}\ln^{1/3}n\ll ε\ll 1$ the largest component has size $\sim 2εn$. Here we show that the second largest component has size close to $ε^{-2}$, so that the dominant component has emerged. This result also suggests th…
In 2004, Frieze, Krivelevich and Martin [17] established the emergence of a giant component in random subgraphs of pseudo-random graphs. We study several typical properties of the giant component, most notably its expansion characteristics. We establish an asymptotic vertex expansion of connected sets in the giant by a factor of $\tilde{O}\left(ε^2\right)$. From these expansion properties, we derive that the diameter of the giant is typically $O_ε\left(\log n\right)$, and that the mixing time of a lazy random walk on the giant is asymptotically $O_ε\left(\log^2 n\right)$. We also show similar …
We study the connectivity of random subgraphs of the $d$-dimensional Hamming graph $H(d, n)$, which is the Cartesian product of $d$ complete graphs on $n$ vertices. We sample the random subgraph with an i.i.d.\ Bernoulli bond percolation on $H(d,n)$ with parameter $p$. We identify the window of the transition: when $ np- \log n \to - \infty$ the probability that the graph is connected goes to $0$, while when $ np- \log n \to + \infty$ it converges to $1$. We also investigate the connectivity probability inside the critical window, namely when $ np- \log n \to t \in \mathbb{R}$. We find that th…
The d-dimensional Hamming torus is the graph whose vertices are all of the integer points inside an a_1 n X a_2 n X ... X a_d n box in R^d (for constants a_1, ..., a_d > 0), and whose edges connect all vertices within Hamming distance one. We study the size of the largest connected component of the subgraph generated by independently removing each vertex of the Hamming torus with probability 1-p. We show that if p=λ/ n, then there exists λ_c > 0, which is the positive root of a degree d polynomial whose coefficients depend on a_1, ..., a_d, such that for λ< λ_c the largest component has O(log …
It is well-known that the behaviour of a random subgraph of a $d$-dimensional hypercube, where we include each edge independently with probability $p$, undergoes a phase transition when $p$ is around $\frac{1}{d}$. More precisely, standard arguments show that just below this value of $p$ all components of this graph have order $O(d)$ with probability tending to one as $d \to \infty$ (whp for short), whereas Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi [Largest random component of a $k$-cube, Combinatorica 2 (1982), no. 1, 1--7; MR0671140] showed that just above this value, in the supercritical regime, whp ther…
We study the isoperimetric subgraphs of the infinite cluster $\textbf{C}_\infty$ for supercritical bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d\geq 3$. Specifically, we consider the subgraphs of $\textbf{C}_\infty \cap [-n,n]^d$ which have minimal open edge boundary to volume ratio. We prove a shape theorem for these subgraphs, obtaining that when suitably rescaled, these subgraphs converge almost surely to a translate of a deterministic shape. This deterministic shape is itself an isoperimetric set for a norm we construct. As a corollary, we obtain sharp asymptotics on a natural modification of…
We study the isoperimetric subgraphs of the giant component $\textbf{C}_n$ of supercritical bond percolation on the square lattice. These are subgraphs of $\textbf{C}_n$ having minimal edge boundary to volume ratio. In contrast to the work of Biskup, Louidor, Procaccia and Rosenthal, the edge boundary is taken only within $\textbf{C}_n$ instead of the full infinite cluster. The isoperimetric subgraphs are shown to converge almost surely, after rescaling, to the collection of optimizers of a continuum isoperimetric problem emerging naturally from the model. We also show that the Cheeger constan…
Let $d\geq 2$. We consider an i.i.d. supercritical bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, every edge is open with a probability $p>p_c(d)$, where $p_c(d)$ denotes the critical point. We condition on the event that $0$ belongs to the infinite cluster $\mathcal{C}_\infty$ and we consider connected subgraphs of $\mathcal{C}_\infty$ having at most $n^d$ vertices and containing $0$. Among these subgraphs, we are interested in the ones that minimize the open edge boundary size to volume ratio. These minimizers properly rescaled converge towards a translate of a deterministic shape and their open edge b…
The interchange process on a finite graph is obtained by placing a particle on each vertex of the graph, then at rate 1, selecting an edge uniformly at random and swapping the two particles at either end of this edge. In this paper we develop new techniques to show the existence of a phase transition of the interchange process on the 2-dimensional Hamming graph. We show that in the subcritical phase, all of the cycles of the process have length $O(\log n)$, whereas in the supercritical phase a positive density of vertices lie in cycles of length at least $n^{2-\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilo…
The Hamming torus of dimension $d$ is the graph with vertices $\{1,\dots,n\}^d$ and an edge between any two vertices that differ in a single coordinate. Bootstrap percolation with threshold $θ$ starts with a random set of open vertices, to which every vertex belongs independently with probability $p$, and at each time step the open set grows by adjoining every vertex with at least $θ$ open neighbors. We assume that $n$ is large and that $p$ scales as $n^{-α}$ for some $α>1$, and study the probability that an $i$-dimensional subgraph ever becomes open. For large $θ$, we prove that the critical …
We study random subgraphs of an arbitrary finite connected transitive graph $\mathbb G$ obtained by independently deleting edges with probability $1-p$. Let $V$ be the number of vertices in $\mathbb G$, and let $Ω$ be their degree. We define the critical threshold $p_c=p_c(\mathbb G,λ)$ to be the value of $p$ for which the expected cluster size of a fixed vertex attains the value $λV^{1/3}$, where $λ$ is fixed and positive. We show that for any such model, there is a phase transition at $p_c$ analogous to the phase transition for the random graph, provided that a quantity called the triangle d…
In a previous paper, we defined a version of the percolation triangle condition that is suitable for the analysis of bond percolation on a finite connected transitive graph, and showed that this triangle condition implies that the percolation phase transition has many features in common with the phase transition on the complete graph. In this paper, we use a new and simplified approach to the lace expansion to prove quite generally that for finite graphs that are tori the triangle condition for percolation is implied by a certain triangle condition for simple random walks on the graph. The lat…
The cover time of a graph is a celebrated example of a parameter that is easy to approximate using a randomized algorithm, but for which no constant factor deterministic polynomial time approximation is known. A breakthrough due to Kahn, Kim, Lovasz and Vu yielded a (log log n)^2 polynomial time approximation. We refine this upper bound, and show that the resulting bound is sharp and explicitly computable in random graphs. Cooper and Frieze showed that the cover time of the largest component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,c/n) in the supercritical regime with c>1 fixed, is asymptotic to f…
We define a Markov process on the partitions of $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ by drawing a sample in $[n]$ at each time of a Poisson process, by merging blocks that contain one of these points and by leaving all other blocks unchanged. This coalescent process appears in the study of the connected components of random graph processes in which connected subgraphs are added over time with probabilities that depend only on their size. First, we determine the asymptotic distribution of the coalescent time. Then, we define a Bienayme-Galton-Watson (BGW) process such that its total population size dominates t…
