The 2-dimensional Hamming graph H(2,n) consists of the $n^2$ vertices $(i,j)$, $1\leq i,j\leq n$, two vertices being adjacent when they share a common coordinate. We examine random subgraphs of H(2,n) in percolation with edge probability $p$, so that the average degree $2(n-1)p=1+ε$. Previous work by van der Hofstad and Luczak had shown that in the barely supercritical region $n^{-2/3}\ln^{1/3}n\ll ε\ll 1$ the largest component has size $\sim 2εn$. Here we show that the second largest component has size close to $ε^{-2}$, so that the dominant component has emerged. This result also suggests that a {\it discrete duality principle} might hold, whereby, after removing the largest connected component in the supercritical regime, the remaining random subgraphs behave as in the subcritical regime.
We study random subgraphs of the 2-dimensional Hamming graph H(2,n), which is the Cartesian product of two complete graphs on $n$ vertices. Let $p$ be the edge probability, and write $p=\frac{1+\vep}{2(n-1)}$ for some $\vep\in \R$. In Borgs et al., Random subgraphs of finite graphs: I. The scaling window under the triangle condition, Rand. Struct. Alg. (2005), and in Borgs et al., Random subgraphs of finite graphs: II. The lace expansion and the triangle condition, Ann. Probab. (2005), the size of the largest connected component was estimated precisely for a large class of graphs including H(2…
The d-dimensional Hamming torus is the graph whose vertices are all of the integer points inside an a_1 n X a_2 n X ... X a_d n box in R^d (for constants a_1, ..., a_d > 0), and whose edges connect all vertices within Hamming distance one. We study the size of the largest connected component of the subgraph generated by independently removing each vertex of the Hamming torus with probability 1-p. We show that if p=λ/ n, then there exists λ_c > 0, which is the positive root of a degree d polynomial whose coefficients depend on a_1, ..., a_d, such that for λ< λ_c the largest component has O(log …
The interchange process on a finite graph is obtained by placing a particle on each vertex of the graph, then at rate 1, selecting an edge uniformly at random and swapping the two particles at either end of this edge. In this paper we develop new techniques to show the existence of a phase transition of the interchange process on the 2-dimensional Hamming graph. We show that in the subcritical phase, all of the cycles of the process have length $O(\log n)$, whereas in the supercritical phase a positive density of vertices lie in cycles of length at least $n^{2-\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilo…
In a recent work of the authors and Kim, we derived a complete description of the largest component of the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$ as it emerges from the critical window, i.e. for $p = (1+ε)/n$ where $ε^3 n \to\infty$ and $ε=o(1)$, in terms of a tractable contiguous model. Here we provide the analogous description for the supercritical giant component, i.e., the largest component of $G(n,p)$ for $p = λ/n$ where $λ>1$ is fixed. The contiguous model is roughly as follows: Take a random degree sequence and sample a random multigraph with these degrees to arrive at the kernel; Replace th…
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on a large scale-free tree in the supercritical regime, meaning informally that there exists a giant cluster with high probability. We obtain a weak limit theorem for the sizes of the next largest clusters, extending a recent result for large random recursive trees. The approach relies on the analysis of the asymptotic behavior of branching processes subject to rare neutral mutations, which may be of independent interest.
We consider the model of random trees introduced by Devroye (1999), the so-called random split trees. The model encompasses many important randomized algorithms and data structures. We then perform supercritical Bernoulli bond-percolation on those trees and obtain a precise weak limit theorem for the sizes of the largest clusters. We also show that the approach developed in this work may be useful for studying percolation on other classes of trees with logarithmic height, for instance, we study also the case of $d$-regular trees.
We consider a supercritical symmetric continuous-time branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with a finite number of particle generation sources of varying positive intensities without any restrictions on the variance of jumps of the underlying random walk. It is assumed that the spectrum of the evolution operator contains at least one positive eigenvalue. We prove that under these conditions the largest eigenvalue of the evolution operator is simple and determines the rate of exponential growth of particle quantities at every point on the lattice as well as on the lattice as a wh…
We study the diameter of $C_1$, the largest component of the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$ in the emerging supercritical phase, i.e., for $p = \frac{1+ε}n$ where $ε^3 n \to \infty$ and $ε=o(1)$. This parameter was extensively studied for fixed $ε> 0$, yet results for $ε=o(1)$ outside the critical window were only obtained very recently. Prior to this work, Riordan and Wormald gave precise estimates on the diameter, however these did not cover the entire supercritical regime (namely, when $ε^3 n\to\infty$ arbitrarily slowly). Łuczak and Seierstad estimated its order throughout this regime, …
We study the "rank 1 case" of the inhomogeneous random graph model. In the subcritical case we derive an exact formula for the asymptotic size of the largest connected component scaled to log n. This result is new, it completes the corresponding known result in the supercritical case. We provide some examples of application of a new formula.
Let $\mathcal{C}^n$ be the largest open cluster for supercritical Bernoulli bond percolation in $[-n, n]^d \cap \mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d \ge 2$. We obtain a sharp estimate for the effective resistance on $\mathcal{C}^n$. As an application we show that the cover time for the simple random walk on $\mathcal{C}^n$ is comparable to $n^d (\log n)^2$. Noting that the cover time for the simple random walk on $[-n, n]^d \cap \mathbb{Z}^d$ is of order $n^d \log n$ for $d \ge 3$ (and of order $n^2 (\log n)^2$ for $d = 2$), this gives a quantitative difference between the two random walks for $d \ge 3$.
For the size of the largest component in a supercritical random geometric graph, this paper estimates its expectation which tends to a polynomial on a rate of exponential decay, and sharpens its asymptotic result with a central limit theory. Similar results can be obtained for the size of biggest open cluster, and for the number of open clusters of percolation on a box, and so on.
We consider vertex percolation on pseudo-random $d-$regular graphs. The previous study by the second author established the existence of phase transition from small components to a linear (in $\frac{n}{d}$) sized component, at $p=\frac{1}{d}$. In the supercritical regime, our main result recovers the sharp asymptotic of the size of the largest component, and shows that all other components are typically much smaller. Furthermore, we consider other typical properties of the largest component such as the number of edges, existence of a long cycle and expansion. In the subcritical regime, we stre…
We study the inhomogeneous random graphs in the subcritical case. We derive an exact formula for the size of the largest connected component scaled to $\log n$ where $n$ is the size of the graph. This generalizes the recent result for the "rank 1 case". Here we discover that the same well-known equation for the survival probability, whose positive solution determines the asymptotics of the size of the largest component in the supercritical case, plays the crucial role in the subcritical case as well. But now these are the negative solutions which come into play.
We study bond percolation on the Hamming hypercube {0,1}^m around the critical probability p_c. It is known that if p=p_c(1+O(2^{-m/3})), then with high probability the largest connected component C_1 is of size Theta(2^{2m/3}) and that this quantity is non-concentrated. Here we show that for any sequence eps_m such that eps_m=o(1) but eps_m >> 2^{-m/3} percolation on the hypercube at p_c(1+eps_m) has |C_1| = (2+o(1)) eps_m 2^m and |C_2| = o(eps_m 2^m) with high probability, where C_2 is the second largest component. This resolves a conjecture of Borgs, Chayes, the first author, Slade and Spen…
It is well-known that the behaviour of a random subgraph of a $d$-dimensional hypercube, where we include each edge independently with probability $p$, undergoes a phase transition when $p$ is around $\frac{1}{d}$. More precisely, standard arguments show that just below this value of $p$ all components of this graph have order $O(d)$ with probability tending to one as $d \to \infty$ (whp for short), whereas Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi [Largest random component of a $k$-cube, Combinatorica 2 (1982), no. 1, 1--7; MR0671140] showed that just above this value, in the supercritical regime, whp ther…
In this paper we present a study of the mixing time of a random walk on the largest component of a supercritical random graph, also known as the giant component. We identify local obstructions that slow down the random walk, when the average degree d is at most (ln n lnln n)^{1/2}, proving that the mixing time in this case is O((ln n/d)^2) asymptotically almost surely. As the average degree grows these become negligible and it is the diameter of the largest component that takes over, yielding mixing time O(ln n/ln d). We proved these results during the 2003-04 academic year. Similar results bu…
Fix a graph $G$ in which every edge is colored in some of $k\ge 2$ colors. Two vertices $u$ and $v$ are CA-connected if $u$ and $v$ may be connected using any subset of $k - 1$ colors. CA-connectivity is an equivalence relation dividing the vertex set into classes called CA-components. In two recent papers, Ráth, Varga, Fekete, and Molontay, and Lichev and Schapira studied the size of the largest CA-component in a randomly colored random graph. The second of these works distinguished and studied three regimes (supercritical, intermediate, and subcritical) in which the largest CA-component has …
Let $\mathcal{C}_1$ be the largest component of the Erdős--Rényi random graph $\mathcal{G}(n,p)$. The mixing time of random walk on $\mathcal {C}_1$ in the strictly supercritical regime, $p=c/n$ with fixed $c>1$, was shown to have order $\log^2n$ by Fountoulakis and Reed, and independently by Benjamini, Kozma and Wormald. In the critical window, $p=(1+\varepsilon)/n$ where $λ=\varepsilon^3n$ is bounded, Nachmias and Peres proved that the mixing time on $\mathcal{C}_1$ is of order $n$. However, it was unclear how to interpolate between these results, and estimate the mixing time as the giant co…
We study near-critical behavior in the configuration model. Let $D_n$ be the degree of a random vertex. We let $ν_n={\mathbb E} [D_n(D_n-1)]/{\mathbb E}[D_n]$ and, assuming that $ν_n \to 1$ as $n \to \infty$, we write $\varepsilon_n=ν_n-1$. We call the setting where $\varepsilon_n n^{1/3}/({\mathbb E}[D_n^3])^{2/3} \to \infty$ the {\it barely supercritical} regime. We further assume that the variance of $D_n$ is uniformly bounded as $n \to \infty$. Let $D_n^*$ denote the size-biased version of $D_n$. We prove that there is a unique giant component of size $n ρ_n {\mathbb E} D_n (1+o(1))$, wher…
In this paper, we study the level-set of the zero-average Gaussian Free Field on a uniform random $d$-regular graph above an arbitrary level $h\in (-\infty, h_{\star})$, where $h_{\star}$ is the level-set percolation threshold of the GFF on the $d$-regular tree $\mathbb{T}_d$. We prove that w.h.p as the number $n$ of vertices diverges, the GFF has a unique giant connected component $\mathcal{C}_1^{(n)}$ of size $η(h) n+o(n)$, where $η(h)$ is the probability that the root percolates in the corresponding GFF level-set on $\mathbb{T}_d$. This gives a positive answer to the conjecture of \cite{ACr…
We describe the component sizes in critical independent p-bond percolation on a random d-regular graph on n vertices, where d \geq 3 is fixed and n grows. We prove mean-field behavior around the critical probability p_c=1/(d-1). In particular, we show that there is a scaling window of width n^{-1/3} around p_c in which the sizes of the largest components are roughly n^{2/3} and we describe their limiting joint distribution. We also show that for the subcritical regime, i.e. p = (1-eps(n))p_c where eps(n)=o(1) but \eps(n)n^{1/3} tends to infinity, the sizes of the largest components are concent…
We determine the asymptotic size of the largest component in the $2$-type binomial random graph $G(\mathbf{n},P)$ near criticality using a refined branching process approach. In $G(\mathbf{n},P)$ every vertex has one of two types, the vector $\mathbf{n}$ describes the number of vertices of each type, and any edge $\{u,v\}$ is present independently with a probability that is given by an entry of the probability matrix $P$ according to the types of $u$ and $v.$ We prove that in the weakly supercritical regime, i.e. if the distance to the critical point of the phase transition is given by an $\va…
Suppose that $X=\{X_t, t\ge 0\}$ is a supercritical superprocess on a locally compact separable metric space $(E, m)$. Suppose that the spatial motion of $X$ is a Hunt process satisfying certain conditions and that the branching mechanism is of the form $$ ψ(x,λ)=-a(x)λ+b(x)λ^2+\int_{(0,+\infty)}(e^{-λy}-1+λy)n(x,dy), \quad x\in E, \quadλ> 0, $$ where $a\in \mathcal{B}_b(E)$, $b\in \mathcal{B}_b^+(E)$ and $n$ is a kernel from $E$ to $(0,\infty)$ satisfying $$ \sup_{x\in E}\int_0^\infty y^2 n(x,dy)<\infty. $$ Put $T_tf(x)=\mathbb{P}_{δ_x}< f,X_t>$. Let $λ_0>0$ be the largest eigenvalue of the g…
We study the asymptotics of large, moderate and normal deviations for the connected components of the sparse random graph by the method of stochastic processes. We obtain the logarithmic asymptotics of large deviations of the joint distribution of the number of connected components, of the sizes of the giant components, and of the numbers of the excess edges of the giant components. For the supercritical case, we obtain the asymptotics of normal deviations and the logarithmic asymptotics of large and moderate deviations of the joint distribution of the number of components, of the size of the …
We apply here methods of inhomogeneous random graphs to a class of random distance graphs. This provides an example outside of the rank 1 models which is still solvable as long as the largest connected component is concerned. In particular, we show that some random distance graphs behave exactly as the classical Erdős-Rényi model not only in the supercritical phase (as was already known) but in the subcritical case as well.
The cover time of a graph is a celebrated example of a parameter that is easy to approximate using a randomized algorithm, but for which no constant factor deterministic polynomial time approximation is known. A breakthrough due to Kahn, Kim, Lovasz and Vu yielded a (log log n)^2 polynomial time approximation. We refine this upper bound, and show that the resulting bound is sharp and explicitly computable in random graphs. Cooper and Frieze showed that the cover time of the largest component of the Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,c/n) in the supercritical regime with c>1 fixed, is asymptotic to f…
We study random subgraphs of an arbitrary finite connected transitive graph $\mathbb G$ obtained by independently deleting edges with probability $1-p$. Let $V$ be the number of vertices in $\mathbb G$, and let $Ω$ be their degree. We define the critical threshold $p_c=p_c(\mathbb G,λ)$ to be the value of $p$ for which the expected cluster size of a fixed vertex attains the value $λV^{1/3}$, where $λ$ is fixed and positive. We show that for any such model, there is a phase transition at $p_c$ analogous to the phase transition for the random graph, provided that a quantity called the triangle d…
In this note we study the geometry of the largest component C_1 of critical percolation on a finite graph G which satisfies the finite triangle condition, defined by Borgs et al. There it is shown that this component is of size n^{2/3}, and here we show that its diameter is n^{1/3} and that the simple random walk takes n steps to mix on it. Our results apply to critical percolation on several high-dimensional finite graphs such as the finite torus Z_n^d (with d large and n tending to infinity) and the Hamming cube {0,1}^n.
We study properties of some standard network models when the population is split into two types and the connection pattern between the types is varied. The studied models are generalizations of the Erdős-Rényi graph, the configuration model and a preferential attachment graph. For the Erdős-Rényi graph and the configuration model, the focus is on the component structure. We derive expressions for the critical parameter, indicating when there is a giant component in the graph, and study the size of the largest component by aid of simulations. When the expected degrees in the graph are fixed and…
Random graph models with limited choice have been studied extensively with the goal of understanding the mechanism of the emergence of the giant component. One of the standard models are the Achlioptas random graph processes on a fixed set of $n$ vertices. Here at each step, one chooses two edges uniformly at random and then decides which one to add to the existing configuration according to some criterion. An important class of such rules are the bounded-size rules where for a fixed $K\geq 1$, all components of size greater than $K$ are treated equally. While a great deal of work has gone int…
We study the critical behavior for percolation on inhomogeneous random networks on $n$ vertices, where the weights of the vertices follow a power-law distribution with exponent $τ\in (2,3)$. Such networks, often referred to as scale-free networks, exhibit critical behavior when the percolation probability tends to zero at an appropriate rate, as $n\to\infty$. We identify the critical window for a host of scale-free random graph models such as the Norros-Reittu model, Chung-Lu model and generalized random graphs. Surprisingly, there exists a finite time inside the critical window, after which, …
