We consider a natural, yet seemingly not much studied, extremal problem in bipartite graphs. A bi-hole of size $t$ in a bipartite graph $G$ is a copy of $K_{t, t}$ in the bipartite complement of $G$. Let $f(n, Δ)$ be the largest $k$ for which every $n \times n$ bipartite graph with maximum degree $Δ$ in one of the parts has a bi-hole of size $k$. Determining $f(n, Δ)$ is thus the bipartite analogue of finding the largest independent set in graphs with a given number of vertices and bounded maximum degree. Our main result determines the asymptotic behavior of $f(n, Δ)$. More precisely, we show that for large but fixed $Δ$ and $n$ sufficiently large, $f(n, Δ) = Θ(\frac{\log Δ}Δ n)$. We further address more specific regimes of $Δ$, especially when $Δ$ is a small fixed constant. In particular, we determine $f(n, 2)$ exactly and obtain bounds for $f(n, 3)$, though determining the precise value of $f(n, 3)$ is still open.
In this article, we define a family of regular bipartite graphs and show that the homotopy type of the independence complexes of this family is the wedge sum of spheres of certain dimensions.
A connected graph is called a bi-block graph if each of its blocks is a complete bipartite graph. Let $\mathcal{B}(\mathbf{k}, α)$ be the class of bi-block graph on $\mathbf{k}$ vertices with given independence number $α$. It is easy to see that every bi-block graph is a bipartite graph. For a bipartite graph $G$ on $\mathbf{k}$ vertices, the independence number $α(G)$ satisfies $\ceil*{\frac{\mathbf{k}}{2}} \leq α(G) \leq \mathbf{k}-1$. In this article, we prove that the maximum spectral radius $ρ(G)$ among all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{B}(\mathbf{k}, α)$, is uniquely attained for the complete …
A bi-hole of size $t$ in a bipartite graph $G$ is a copy of $K_{t,t}$ in the bipartite complement of $G$. Given an $n \times n$ bipartite graph $G$, let $β(G)$ be the largest $k$ for which $G$ has a bi-hole of size $k$. We prove that \[ β(G) \geq \left \lfloor \frac{1}{2} \cdot \sum_{v \in V(G)} \frac{1}{d(v)+1} \right \rfloor. \] Furthermore, we prove the following generalization of the result above. Given an $n \times n$ bipartite graph $G$, Let $β_d(G)$ be the largest $k$ for which $G$ has a $k \times k$ $d$-degenerate subgraph. We prove that \[ β_d(G) \geq \left \lfloor \frac{1}{2} \cdot \…
This paper is devoted to present two counterexamples to the theorem from \cite{MK} Maria R., Katherine T. M., Bernardo S. M., Extremal graphs with bounded vertex bipartiteness number, Linear Algebra Appl. 493 (2016) 28-36. Moreover, the corrected theorem and proof are presented.
We disprove the characterisation of graphs with equal independence and annihilation number by Larson and Pepper (2011). Series of counterexamples with arbitrary number of vertices, arbitrary number of components, arbitrary large independence number and arbitrary large difference between the critical and the regular independence number are provided. Furthermore, we point out the error in the proof of the theorem. However, we show that the theorem still holds for bipartite graphs and connected claw-free graphs.
A dissociation set in a graph is a set of vertices inducing a subgraph of maximum degree at most $1$. Computing the dissociation number ${\rm diss}(G)$ of a given graph $G$, defined as the order of a maximum dissociation set in $G$, is algorithmically hard even when $G$ is restricted to be bipartite. Recently, Hosseinian and Butenko proposed a simple $\frac{4}{3}$-approximation algorithm for the dissociation number problem in bipartite graphs. Their result relies on the inequality ${\rm diss}(G)\leq\frac{4}{3}α(G-M)$ implicit in their work, where $G$ is a bipartite graph, $M$ is a maximum matc…
We prove that for every $k$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $g$ such that every graph with tree-width at most $k$ and odd-girth at least $g$ has circular chromatic number at most $2+\varepsilon$.
The bounded degree complex $BD(G,λ)$ is a generalization of the matching complexes of a graph. In this paper, we show that the bounded degree complex of a forest is shellable, by using independence complexes of hypergraphs. We obtain a wedge decomposition result of bounded degree complexes when a graph $G$ has a leaf
We show that the problem of counting perfect matchings remains #P-complete even if we restrict the input to very dense graphs, proving the conjecture in [5]. Here "dense graphs" refer to bipartite graphs of bipartite independence number $\leq 2$, or general graphs of independence number $\leq 2$. Our proof is by reduction from counting perfect matchings in bipartite graphs, via elementary linear algebra tricks and graph constructions.
We prove that for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, there exists a constant $C_r$ such that the following is true. Let $\mathcal{F}=\{F_1,F_2,\dots\}$ be an infinite sequence of bipartite graphs such that $|V(F_i)|=i$ and $Δ(F_i)\leq Δ$ hold for all $i$. Then in any $r$-edge coloured complete graph $K_n$, there is a collection of at most $\exp(C_rΔ)$ monochromatic subgraphs, each of which is isomorphic to an element of $\mathcal{F}$, whose vertex sets partition $V(K_n)$. This proves a conjecture of Corsten and Mendonça in a strong form and generalizes results on the multicolour Ramsey numbers of bounded-…
A graph is equimatchable if each of its matchings is a subset of a maximum matching. It is known that any 2-connected equimatchable graph is either bipartite, or factor-critical, and that these two classes are disjoint. This paper provides a description of k-connected equimatchable factor-critical graphs with respect to their k-cuts for $k\ge 3$. As our main result we prove that if G is a k-connected equimatchable factor-critical graph with at least 2k+3 vertices and a k-cut S, then G-S has exactly two components and both these components are close to being complete or complete bipartite. If b…
The goal of this paper is to accurately describe the maximal zero-free region of the independence polynomial for graphs of bounded degree, for large degree bounds. In previous work with de Boer, Guerini and Regts it was demonstrated that this zero-free region coincides with the normality region of the related occupation ratios. These ratios form a discrete semi-group that is in a certain sense generated by finitely many rational maps. We will show that as the degree bound converges to infinity, the properly rescaled normality regions converge to a limit domain, which can be described as the ma…
Erdos asked in 1962 about the value of f(n,k,l), the minimum number of k-cliques in a graph of order n and independence number less than l. The case (k,l)=(3,3) was solved by Lorden. Here we solve the problem (for all large n) when (k,l) is (3,4), (3,5), (3,6), (3,7), (4,3), (5,3), (6,3), and (7,3). Independently, Das, Huang, Ma, Naves, and Sudakov did the cases (k,l)=(3,4) and (4,3).
We show the existence of rainbow perfect matchings in $μn$-bounded edge colourings of Dirac bipartite graphs, for a sufficiently small $μ>0$. As an application of our results, we obtain several results on the existence of rainbow $k$-factors in Dirac graphs and rainbow spanning subgraphs of bounded maximum degree on graphs with large minimum degree.
We estimate Ramsey numbers for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. In particular we determine asymptotically the two and three color Ramsey numbers for grid graphs. More generally, we determine asymptotically the two color Ramsey number for bipartite graphs with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree and the three color Ramsey number for such graphs with the additional assumption that the bipartite graph is balanced.
S.B. Rao conjectured in 1971 that graphic degree sequences are well quasi ordered by a relation defined in terms of the induced subgraph relation. In 2008, M. Chudnovsky and P. Seymour proved this long standing Rao's Conjecture by giving structure theorems for graphic degree sequences. In this paper, we prove and use a variant of Dickson's Lemma from commutative semigroup theory to give a short proof of the bounded degree case of Rao's Conjecture that is independent of the Chudnovsky-Seymour structure theory. In fact, we affirmatively answer two questions of N. Robertson, the first of which im…
In this paper we consider a natural extremal graph theoretic problem of topological sort, concerning the minimization of the (topological) connectedness of the independence complex of graphs in terms of its dimension. We observe that the lower bound $\frac{\dim(\mathcal{I}(G))}{2} - 2$ on the connectedness of the independence complex $\mathcal{I}(G)$ of line graphs of bipartite graphs $G$ is tight. In our main theorem we characterize the extremal examples. Our proof of this characterization is based on topological machinery. Our motivation for studying this problem comes from a classical conje…
Let G be a bipartite graph with edge ideal I(G) whose quotient ring R/I(G) is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We prove: (1) the independence complex of G must be vertex decomposable, and (2) the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of R/I(G) can be determined from the invariants of G.
The independence number $α(G)$ and the dissociation number ${\rm diss}(G)$ of a graph $G$ are the largest orders of induced subgraphs of $G$ of maximum degree at most $0$ and at most $1$, respectively. We consider possible improvements of the obvious inequality $2α(G)\geq {\rm diss}(G)$. For connected cubic graphs $G$ distinct from $K_4$, we show $5α(G)\geq 3{\rm diss}(G)$, and describe the rich and interesting structure of the extremal graphs in detail. For bipartite graphs, and, more generally, triangle-free graphs, we also obtain improvements. For subcubic graphs though, the inequality cann…
We show that a simple Markov chain, the Glauber dynamics, can efficiently sample independent sets almost uniformly at random in polynomial time for graphs in a certain class. The class is determined by boundedness of a new graph parameter called bipartite pathwidth. This result, which we prove for the more general hardcore distribution with fugacity $λ$, can be viewed as a strong generalisation of Jerrum and Sinclair's work on approximately counting matchings, that is, independent sets in line graphs. The class of graphs with bounded bipartite pathwidth includes claw-free graphs, which general…
Let $G$ be an abelian group of bounded exponent and $A \subseteq G$. We show that if the collection of translates of $A$ has VC dimension at most $d$, then for every $ε>0$ there is a subgroup $H$ of $G$ of index at most $ε^{-d-o(1)}$ such that one can add or delete at most $ε|G|$ elements to/from $A$ to make it a union of $H$-cosets. We also establish a removal lemma with polynomial bounds, with applications to property testing, for induced bipartite patterns in a finite abelian group with bounded exponent.
We prove that independence complex of a bipartite circle graph is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres, resolving a conjecture posed by Przytycki and Silvero. As a corollary, we obtain that extreme Khovanov spectrum, $\mathcal{X}_{j_{extreme}}$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In particular, the extreme Khovanov homology has no torsion.
We show that the number of independent sets in an N-vertex, d-regular graph is at most (2^{d+1} - 1)^{N/2d}, where the bound is sharp for a disjoint union of complete d-regular bipartite graphs. This settles a conjecture of Alon in 1991 and Kahn in 2001. Kahn proved the bound when the graph is assumed to be bipartite. We give a short proof that reduces the general case to the bipartite case. Our method also works for a weighted generalization, i.e., an upper bound for the independence polynomial of a regular graph.
In the Exact Matching Problem (EM), we are given a graph equipped with a fixed coloring of its edges with two colors (red and blue), as well as a positive integer $k$. The task is then to decide whether the given graph contains a perfect matching exactly $k$ of whose edges have color red. EM generalizes several important algorithmic problems such as perfect matching and restricted minimum weight spanning tree problems. When introducing the problem in 1982, Papadimitriou and Yannakakis conjectured EM to be $\textbf{NP}$-complete. Later however, Mulmuley et al.~presented a randomized polynomial …
We prove that there exist infinite families of regular bipartite Ramanujan graphs of every degree bigger than 2. We do this by proving a variant of a conjecture of Bilu and Linial about the existence of good 2-lifts of every graph. We also establish the existence of infinite families of `irregular Ramanujan' graphs, whose eigenvalues are bounded by the spectral radius of their universal cover. Such families were conjectured to exist by Linial and others. In particular, we prove the existence of infinite families of (c,d)-biregular bipartite graphs with all non-trivial eigenvalues bounded by sq…
We propose new bounds on the domination number and on the independence number of a graph and show that our bounds compare favorably to recent ones. Our bounds are obtained by using the Bhatia-Davis inequality linking the variance, the expected value, the minimum, and the maximum of a random variable with bounded distribution.
A recent result of Condon, Kim, Kühn and Osthus implies that for any $r\geq (\frac{1}{2}+o(1))n$, an $n$-vertex almost $r$-regular graph $G$ has an approximate decomposition into any collections of $n$-vertex bounded degree trees. In this paper, we prove that a similar result holds for an almost $αn$-regular graph $G$ with any $α>0$ and a collection of bounded degree trees on at most $(1-o(1))n$ vertices if $G$ does not contain large bipartite holes. This result is sharp in the sense that it is necessary to exclude large bipartite holes and we cannot hope for an approximate decomposition into …
We estimate the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced bipartite graphs $H$ with small bandwidth and bounded maximum degree. More precisely, we show that the minimum value of $N$ such that in any $3$-edge colouring of $K_{N,N}$ there is a monochromatic copy of $H$ is at most $\big(3/2+o(1)\big)|V(H)|$. In particular, we determine asymptotically the $3$-colour bipartite Ramsey number for balanced grid graphs.
Boettcher, Schacht and Taraz gave a condition on the minimum degree of a graph G on n vertices that ensures G contains every r-chromatic graph H on n vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth o(n), thereby proving a conjecture of Bollobas and Komlos. We strengthen this result in the case when H is bipartite. Indeed, we give an essentially best-possible condition on the degree sequence of a graph G on n vertices that forces G to contain every bipartite graph H on n vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth o(n). This also implies an Ore-type result. In fact, we prove a much stronger result …
In this work we study the null space of bipartite graphs without cycles of length multiple of $4$, and its relation to structural properties. We decompose them into two subgraphs: $C_N(G)$ and $C_S(G)$. $C_N(G)$ has perfect matching and its adjacency matrix is nonsingular. $C_S(G)$ has a unique maximum independent set and the dimension of its null space equals the dimension of the null space of $G$. Even more, we show that the fundamental spaces of $G$ are the direct sum of the fundamental spaces of $C_N(G)$ and $C_S(G)$. We also obtain formulas relating the independence number and the matchin…
Given a graph $G$, the adjacency matrix and degree diagonal matrix of $G$ are denoted by $A(G)$ and $D(G)$, respectively. In 2017, Nikiforov \cite{0007} proposed the $A_α$-matrix: $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G),$ where $α\in [0, 1]$. The largest eigenvalue of this novel matrix is called the $A_α$-index of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the graphs with minimum $A_α$-index among $n$-vertex graphs with independence number $i$ for $α\in[0,1)$, where $i=1,\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor,\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil,{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor+1},n-3,n-2,n-1,$ whereas for $i=2$ we consider the same problem for $α…
Since 1997 a considerable effort has been spent on the study of the swap (switch) Markov chains on graphic degree sequences. Several results were proved on rapidly mixing Markov chains on regular simple, on regular directed, on half-regular directed and on half-regular bipartite degree sequences. In this paper, the main result is the following: Let $U$ and $V$ be disjoint finite sets, and let $0 < c_1 \le c_2 < |U|$ and $0 < d_1 \le d_2 < |V|$ be integers. Furthermore, assume that the bipartite degree sequence on $U \cup V$ satisfies $c_1 \le d(v) \le c_2\ : \ \forall v\in V$ and $d_1 \le d(u)…
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G = (V, E)$ is called {\em cycle independent} if the induced subgraph $\langle S\rangle$ is acyclic, and called {\em odd-cycle indepdendet} if $\langle S\rangle$ is bipartite. A set $S$ is {\em cycle dominating} (resp. {\em odd-cycle dominating}) if for every vertex $u \in V \setminus S$ there exists a vertex $v \in S$ such that $u$ and $v$ are contained in a (resp. odd cycle) cycle in $\langle S \setminus \{u\}\rangle$. A set $S$ is {\em cycle irredundant} (resp. odd-cycle irredundant) if for every vertex $v \in S$ there exists a vertex $u \in V \setminus S$ …
The problem of Zarankiewicz asks for the maximum number of edges in a bipartite graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain the complete bipartite graph $K_{k,k}$ as a subgraph. A classical theorem due to Kővári, Sós, and Turán says that this number of edges is $O\left(n^{2 - 1/k}\right)$. An important variant of this problem is the analogous question in bipartite graphs with VC-dimension at most $d$, where $d$ is a fixed integer such that $k \geq d \geq 2$. A remarkable result of Fox, Pach, Sheffer, Suk, and Zahl [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS), no. 19, 1785-1810] with multiple applications in in…
We prove that the degeneracy of graphs in a hereditary class defined by a finite set S of forbidden induced subgraphs is bounded if and only if S includes a complete graph, a complete bipartite graph and a forest.
We classify the two-way independence quasi-independence models (or independence models with structural zeros) that have rational maximum likelihood estimators, or MLEs. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on the bipartite graph associated to the model for the MLE to be rational. In this case, we give an explicit formula for the MLE in terms of combinatorial features of this graph. We also use the Horn uniformization to show that for general log-linear models $\mathcal{M}$ with rational MLE, any model obtained by restricting to a face of the cone of sufficient statistics of $\mathcal{M…
Given a digraph $D$ with $m$ arcs and a bijection $τ: A(D)\rightarrow \{1, 2, \ldots, m\}$, we say $(D, τ)$ is an antimagic orientation of a graph $G$ if $D$ is an orientation of $G$ and no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum under $τ$, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u$ in $D$ under $τ$ is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz in 2010 initiated the study of antimagic orientations of graphs, and conjectured that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation. This conjecture seems hard, and few …
