A connected graph is called a bi-block graph if each of its blocks is a complete bipartite graph. Let $\mathcal{B}(\mathbf{k}, α)$ be the class of bi-block graph on $\mathbf{k}$ vertices with given independence number $α$. It is easy to see that every bi-block graph is a bipartite graph. For a bipartite graph $G$ on $\mathbf{k}$ vertices, the independence number $α(G)$ satisfies $\ceil*{\frac{\mathbf{k}}{2}} \leq α(G) \leq \mathbf{k}-1$. In this article, we prove that the maximum spectral radius $ρ(G)$ among all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{B}(\mathbf{k}, α)$, is uniquely attained for the complete bipartite graph $K_{α, \mathbf{k}-α}$.
In this paper, we investigate some properties of the Perron vector of connected graphs. These results are used to characterize that all extremal connected graphs with having the minimum (maximum) spectra radius among all connected graphs of order $n=kα$ with the independence number $α$, respectively.
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and degree diagonal matrix $D (G)$. In 2017, Nikiforov [Appl. Anal. Discrete Math., 11 (2017) 81--107] defined the matrix $A_α(G) = αD(G) + (1-α)A(G)$ for any real $α\in[0,1]$. The largest eigenvalue of $A(G)$ is called the spectral radius of $G$, while the largest eigenvalue of $A_α(G)$ is called the $A_α$ spectral radius of $G$. Let $\mathcal{G}_{n,i}$ be the set of graphs of order $n$ with independence number $i$. Recently, for all graphs in $\mathcal{G}_{n,i}$ having the minimum or the maximum $A$, $Q$ and $A_α$ spectral radius where $i\in\{1…
Let $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ be the set of connected graphs with order $n$ and independence number $α$. Given $k=n-α$, the graph with minimum spectral radius among $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ is called the minimizer graph. Stevanović in the classical book [D. Stevanović, Spectral Radius of Graphs, Academic Press, Amsterdam, 2015.] pointed that determining minimizer graph in $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ appears to be a tough problem on page $96$. Very recently, Lou and Guo in \cite{Lou} proved that the minimizer graph of $\mathbb{G}_{n,α}$ must be a tree if $α\ge\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$. In this paper, we further give …
The edge-connectivity of a graph is the minimum number of edges whose deletion disconnects the graph. Let $Δ(G)$ the maximum degree of a graph $G$ and let $ρ(G)$ be the spectral radius of $G$. In this article we present a lower bound for $Δ(G)-ρ(G)$ in terms of the edge connectivity of $G$, where $G$ is a nonregular distance-hereditary graph. We also prove that $ρ(G)$ reaches the maximum at a unique graph in $\mathcal G$, when $\vert V(G)\vert = n$, and $\mathcal G$ either is in the class of graphs with bounded tree-width or is in the class of block graphs with prescribed independence number.
A blocking quadruple (BQ) is a quadruple of vertices of a graph such that any two vertices of the quadruple either miss (have no neighbours on) some path connecting the remaining two vertices of the quadruple, or are connected by some path missed by the remaining two vertices. This is akin to the notion of asteroidal triple used in the classical characterization of interval graphs by Lekkerkerker and Boland. We show that a circular-arc graph cannot have a blocking quadruple. We also observe that the absence of blocking quadruples is not in general sufficient to guarantee that a graph is a circ…
Let $\mathcal{B}(n,q)$ be the class of block graphs on $n$ vertices having all their blocks of the same size. We prove that if $G\in \mathcal{B}(n,q)$ has at most three pairwise adjacent cut vertices then the minimum spectral radius $ρ(G)$ is attained at a unique graph. In addition, we present a lower bound for $ρ(G)$ when $G\in \mathcal{B}(n,q)$.
Let $G$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A connected and acyclic hypergraph is called a supertree. For $0\leqα<1$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $αD(G)+(1-α)A(G)$, where $D(G)$ and $A(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of the degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we determine the unique supertrees with the maximum $α$-spectral radius among all $k$-uniform supertrees with $m$ edges and independence number $β$ for $\lceil\frac{m(k-1)+1}{k}\rceil\leqβ\leq m$, among all $k$-uniform supertrees with giv…
For integer $k\geq2,$ a spanning $k$-ended-tree is a spanning tree with at most $k$ leaves. Motivated by the closure theorem of Broersma and Tuinstra [Independence trees and Hamilton cycles, J. Graph Theory 29 (1998) 227--237], we provide tight spectral conditions to guarantee the existence of a spanning $k$-ended-tree in a connected graph of order $n$ with extremal graphs being characterized. Moreover, by adopting Kaneko's theorem [Spanning trees with constraints on the leaf degree, Discrete Appl. Math. 115 (2001) 73--76], we also present tight spectral conditions for the existence of a spann…
We study the locations of complex zeroes of independence polynomials of bounded degree hypergraphs. For graphs, this is a long-studied subject with applications to statistical physics, algorithms, and combinatorics. Results on zero-free regions for bounded-degree graphs include Shearer's result on the optimal zero-free disk, along with several recent results on other zero-free regions. Much less is known for hypergraphs. We make some steps towards an understanding of zero-free regions for bounded-degree hypergaphs by proving that all hypergraphs of maximum degree $Δ$ have a zero-free disk almo…
We give lower bounds on the size and total size of clique partitions of a graph in terms of its spectral radius and minimum degree, and derive a spectral upper bound for the maximum number of edge-disjoint $t$-cliques. The extremal graphs attaining the bounds are exactly the block graphs of Steiner $2$-designs and the regular graphs with $K_t$-decompositions, respectively.
The chromatic number $χ(G)$ of a graph $G$, that is, the smallest number of colors required to color the vertices of $G$ so that no two adjacent vertices are assigned the same color, is a classic and extensively studied parameter. Here we consider the case where $G$ is a random block graph, also known as the stochastic block model. The vertex set is partitioned into $k\in\mathbb{N}$ parts $V_1, \dotsc, V_k$, and for each $1 \le i\le j\le k$, two vertices $u \in V_i, v\in V_j$ are connected by an edge with some probability $p_{ij} \in (0,1)$ independently. Our main result pins down the typical …
We study the following problem: for given integers $d$, $k$ and graph $G$, can we reduce some fixed graph parameter $π$ of $G$ by at least $d$ via at most $k$ graph operations from some fixed set $S$? As parameters we take the chromatic number $χ$, clique number $ω$ and independence number $α$, and as operations we choose the edge contraction ec and vertex deletion vd. We determine the complexity of this problem for $S=\{\mbox{ec}\}$ and $S=\{\mbox{vd}\}$ and $π\in \{χ,ω,α\}$ for a number of subclasses of perfect graphs. We use these results to determine the complexity of the problem for $S=\{…
