A {\it heterochromatic tree} is an edge-colored tree in which any two edges have different colors. The {\it heterochromatic tree partition number} of an $r$-edge-colored graph $G$, denoted by $t_r(G)$, is the minimum positive integer $p$ such that whenever the edges of the graph $G$ are colored with $r$ colors, the vertices of $G$ can be covered by at most $p$ vertex-disjoint heterochromatic trees. In this paper we determine the heterochromatic tree partition number of an $r$-edge-colored complete graph.
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. A heterochromatic cycle of $G$ is one in which every two edges have different colors. For a vertex $v\in V(G)$, let $CN(v)$ denote the set of colors which are assigned to the edges incident to $v$. In this note we prove that $G$ contains a heterochromatic cycle of length 4 if $G$ has $n\geq 60$ vertices and $|CN(u)\cup CN(v)|\geq n-1$ for every pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. This extends a result of Broersma et al. on the existence of heterochromatic cycles of length 3 or 4.
Let $K_n$ be the complete graph with $n$ vertices and $c_1, c_2, ..., c_r$ be $r$ different colors. Suppose we randomly and uniformly color the edges of $K_n$ in $c_1, c_2, ..., c_r$. Then we get a random graph, denoted by $\mathcal{K}_n^r$. In the paper, we investigate the asymptotic properties of several kinds of monochromatic and heterochromatic subgraphs in $\mathcal{K}_n^r$. Accurate threshold functions in some cases are also obtained.
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. A heterochromatic (rainbow, or multicolored) path of $G$ is such a path in which no two edges have the same color. Let $d^c(v)$ denote the color degree and $CN(v)$ denote the color neighborhood of a vertex $v$ of $G$. In a previous paper, we showed that if $d^c(v)\geq k$ (color degree condition) for every vertex $v$ of $G$, then $G$ has a heterochromatic path of length at least $\lceil\frac{k+1}{2}\rceil$, and if $|CN(u)\cup CN(v)|\geq s$ (color neighborhood union condition) for every pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, then $G$ has a heterochromatic path of …
In this paper, graphs under consideration are always edge-colored. We consider long heterochromatic paths in heterochromatic triangle free graphs. Two kinds of such graphs are considered, one is complete graphs with Gallai colorings, i.e., heterochromatic triangle free complete graphs; the other is heterochromatic triangle free graphs with $k$-good colorings, i.e., minimum color degree at least $k$. For the heterochromatic triangle free graphs $K_n$, we obtain that for every vertex $v\in V(K_n)$, $K_n$ has a heterochromatic $v$-path of length at least $d^c(v)$; whereas for the heterochromatic …
In 2006, Suzuki, and Akbari & Alipour independently presented a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have a heterochromatic spanning tree, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we propose $f$-chromatic graphs as a generalization of heterochromatic graphs. An edge-colored graph is $f$-chromatic if each color $c$ appears on at most $f(c)$ edges. We also present a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have an $f$-chromatic spanning forest with exactly $m$ components. Moreover, usin…
In 2001, Brualdi and Hollingsworth proved that an edge-colored balanced complete bipartite graph Kn,n with a color set C = {1,2,3,..., 2n-1} has a heterochromatic spanning tree if the number of edges colored with colors in R is more than |R|^2 /4 for any non-empty subset R \subseteq C, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have distinct colors, namely, any color appears at most once. In 2010, Suzuki generalized heterochromatic graphs to f-chromatic graphs, where any color c appears at most f(c). Moreover, he presented a necessary and sufficient condition for grap…
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. The color degree of a vertex $v$ of $G$, is defined as the number of colors of the edges incident to $v$. The color number of $G$ is defined as the number of colors of the edges in $G$. A rainbow triangle is one in which every pair of edges have distinct colors. In this paper we give some sufficient conditions for the existence of rainbow triangles in edge-colored graphs in terms of color degree, color number and edge number. As a corollary, a conjecture proposed by Li and Wang (Color degree and heterochromatic cycles in edge-colored graphs, European J. Combin…
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. A rainbow (heterochromatic, or multicolored) path of $G$ is such a path in which no two edges have the same color. Let the color degree of a vertex $v$ be the number of different colors that are used on the edges incident to $v$, and denote it to be $d^c(v)$. It was shown that if $d^c(v)\geq k$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$, then $G$ has a rainbow path of length at least $\min\{\lceil\frac{2k+1}{3}\rceil,k-1\}$. In the present paper, we consider the properly edge-colored complete graph $K_n$ only and improve the lower bound of the length of the longest rainbow p…
We are given a bipartite graph that contains at least one perfect matching and where each edge is colored from a set $Q=\{c_1,c_2,\ldots,c_q}\$. Let $Q_i=\set{e\in E(G):c(e)=c_i}$, where $c(e)$ denotes the color of $e$. The perfect matching color profile $mcp(G)$ is defined to be the set of vectors $(m_1,m_2,\ldots,m_q)\in [n]^q$ such that there exists a perfect matching $M$ such that $|M\cap Q_i|=m_i$. We give bounds on the matching color profile for a randomly colored random bipartite graph.

The monochromatic tree partition number of an $r$-edge-colored graph $G$, denoted by $t_r(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that whenever the edges of $G$ are colored with $r$ colors, the vertices of $G$ can be covered by at most $k$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic trees. In general, to determine this number is very difficult. For 2-edge-colored complete multipartite graph, Kaneko, Kano, and Suzuki gave the exact value of $t_2(K(n_1,n_2,...,n_k))$. In this paper, we prove that if $n\geq 3$, and K(n,n) is 3-edge-colored such that every vertex has color degree 3, then $t_3(K(n,n))=3.$
We consider the Turán problems of $2$-edge-colored graphs. A $2$-edge-colored graph $H=(V, E_r, E_b)$ is a triple consisting of the vertex set $V$, the set of red edges $E_r$ and the set of blue edges $E_b$ with $E_r$ and $E_b$ do not have to be disjoint. The Turán density $π(H)$ of $H$ is defined to be $\lim_{n\to\infty} \max_{G_n}h_n(G_n)$, where $G_n$ is chosen among all possible $2$-edge-colored graphs on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a sub-graph and $h_n(G_n)=(|E_r(G)|+|E_b(G)|)/{n\choose 2}$ is the formula to measure the edge density of $G_n$. We will determine the Turán densities of…
Let $k,l,m$ be integers and $r(k,l,m)$ be the minimum integer $N$ such that for any red-blue-green coloring of $K_{N,N}$, there is a red matching of size at least $k$ in a component, or a blue matching of at least size $l$ in a component, or a green matching of size at least $m$ in a component. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $r(k,l,m)$ completely. Applying a technique originated by Łuczak that applies Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma to reduce the problem of showing the existence of a monochromatic cycle to show the existence of a monochromatic matching in a component, we obtain th…
A heterochromatic (or rainbow) graph is an edge-colored graph whose edges have distinct colors, that is, where each color appears at most once. In this paper, I propose a $(g,f)$-chromatic graph as an edge-colored graph where each color $c$ appears at least $g(c)$ times and at most $f(c)$ times. I also present a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs (not necessary to be proper) to have a $(g,f)$-chromatic spanning tree. Using this criterion, I show that an edge-colored complete graph $G$ has a spanning tree with a color probability distribution `similar' to that of $G$. Mo…
F-nomial coefficients encompass among others well-known binomial coefficients or Gaussian coefficients that count subsets of finite set and subspaces of finite vector space respectively. Here, the so called F-cobweb tiling sequences N(a) are considered. For such specific sequences a new interpretation with respect to Kwasniewski general combinatorial interpretation of F-nomial coefficients is unearhed. Namely, for tiling sequences F = N(a)$ the F-nomial coefficients are equal to the number of labeled special bipartite multigraphs denoted here as a-multigraphs G(a,n,k). An explicit relation bet…
Gyárfás and Lehel and independently Faudree and Schelp proved that in any 2-coloring of the edges of $K_{n,n}$ there exists a monochromatic path on at least $2\lceil n/2\rceil$ vertices, and this is tight. We prove a stability version of this result which holds even if the host graph is not complete; that is, if $G$ is a balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(3/4+o(1))n$, then in every 2-coloring of the edges of $G$, either there exists a monochromatic cycle on at least $(1+o(1))n$ vertices, or the coloring of $G$ is close to an extremal coloring -- in which c…

Gallai-colorings are edge-colored complete graphs in which there are no rainbow triangles. Within such colored complete graphs, we consider Ramsey-type questions, looking for specified monochromatic graphs. In this work, we consider monochromatic bipartite graphs since the numbers are known to grow more slowly than for non-bipartite graphs. The main result shows that it suffices to consider only $3$-colorings which have a special partition of the vertices. Using this tool, we find several sharp numbers and conjecture the sharp value for all bipartite graphs. In particular, we determine the Gal…
Two edge colorings of a graph are {\em edge-Kempe equivalent} if one can be obtained from the other by a series of edge-Kempe switches. This work gives some results for the number of edge-Kempe equivalence classes for cubic graphs. In particular we show every 2-connected planar bipartite cubic graph has exactly one edge-Kempe equivalence class. Additionally, we exhibit infinite families of nonplanar bipartite cubic graphs with a range of numbers of edge-Kempe equivalence classes. Techniques are developed that will be useful for analyzing other classes of graphs as well.
A path in an edge-colored graph $G$ is called a rainbow path if no two edges of the path are colored the same. The minimum number of colors required to color the edges of $G$ such that every pair of vertices are connected by at least $k$ internally vertex-disjoint rainbow paths is called the rainbow $k$-connectivity of the graph $G$, denoted by $rc_k(G)$. For the random graph $G(n,p)$, He and Liang got a sharp threshold function for the property $rc_k(G(n,p))\leq d$. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of random bipartite graph $G(m,n,p)$.

A subgraph in an edge-colored graph is multicolored if all its edges receive distinct colors. In this paper, we study the proper edge-colorings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ which forbid multicolored cycles. Mainly, we prove that (1) for any integer $k\geq 2$, if $n\geq 5k-6$, then any properly $n$-edge-colored $K_{k,n}$ contains a multicolored $C_{2k}$, and (2) determine the order of the properly edge-colored complete bipartite graphs which forbid multicolored $C_6$.
Motivated by the problem in [6], which studies the relative efficiency of propositional proof systems, 2-edge colorings of complete bipartite graphs are investigated. It is shown that if the edges of $G=K_{n,n}$ are colored with black and white such that the number of black edges differs from the number of white edges by at most 1, then there are at least $n(1-1/\sqrt{2})$ vertex-disjoint forks with centers in the same partite set of $G$. Here, a fork is a graph formed by two adjacent edges of different colors. The bound is sharp. Moreover, an algorithm running in time $O(n^2 \log n \sqrt{n α(…
Let $G$ be an edge colored graph. A {\it}{rainbow path} in $G$ is a path in which all the edges are colored with distinct colors. Let $d^c(v)$ be the color degree of a vertex $v$ in $G$, i.e. the number of distinct colors present on the edges incident on the vertex $v$. Let $t$ be the maximum length of a rainbow path in $G$. Chen and Li showed that if $d^c \geq k$, for every vertex $v$ of $G$, then $t \geq \left \lceil \frac{3 k}{5}\right \rceil + 1$ (Long heterochromatic paths in edge-colored graphs, The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 12 (2005), # R33, Pages:1-33.) Unfortunately, proof b…
Recent investigations in computational biology have focused on a family of 2-colored digraphs, called 2-colored best match graphs, which naturally arise from rooted phylogenetic trees. Actually the defining properties of such graphs are unusual, and a natural question is whether they also have properties which well fit in structural graph theory. In this paper, we prove that some underlying oriented bipartite graphs of a 2-colored best match graph are acyclic and we point out that the arising topological ordering can efficiently be used for constructing new families of 2-colored best match gra…
In this paper we obtain a new sufficient condition for the existence of directed cycles of length 4 in oriented bipartite graphs. As a corollary, a conjecture of H. Li is confirmed. As an application, a sufficient condition for the existence of rainbow cycles of length 4 in bipartite edge-colored graphs is obtained.
For a connected graph, we define the proper-walk connection number as the minimum number of colors needed to color the edges of a graph so that there is a walk between every pair of vertices without two consecutive edges having the same color. We show that the proper-walk connection number is at most three for all cyclic graphs, and at most two for bridgeless graphs. We also characterize the bipartite graphs that have proper-walk connection number equal to two, and show that this characterization also holds for the analogous problem where one is restricted to properly colored paths.
Motivated by the concept of well-covered graphs, we define a graph to be well-bicovered if every vertex-maximal bipartite subgraph has the same order (which we call the bipartite number). We first give examples of them, compare them with well-covered graphs, and characterize those with small or large bipartite number. We then consider graph operations including the union, join, and lexicographic and cartesian products. Thereafter we consider simplicial vertices and 3-colored graphs where every vertex is in triangle, and conclude by characterizing the maximal outerplanar graphs that are well-bi…
A path in an edge-colored graph is said to be a rainbow path if no two edges on the path have the same color. An edge-colored graph is (strongly) rainbow connected if there exists a rainbow (geodesic) path between every pair of vertices. The (strong) rainbow connection number of $G$, denoted by ($scr(G)$, respectively) $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ (strongly) rainbow connected. Though for a general graph $G$ it is NP-Complete to decide whether $rc(G)=2$, in this paper, we show that the problem becomes easy when $G$ is a bipartite graph. Moreover…
An edge-colored graph $G$ is called properly colored if no two adjacent edges share a color in $G$. An edge-colored connected graph $G$ is called properly connected if between every pair of distinct vertices, there exists a path that is properly colored. In this paper, we discuss how to make a connected graph properly connected efficiently. More precisely, we consider the problem to convert a given monochromatic graph into properly connected by recoloring $p$ edges with $q$ colors so that $p+q$ is as small as possible. We discuss how this can be done efficiently for some restricted graphs, suc…

We show that there exist efficient algorithms for the triangle packing problem in colored permutation graphs, complete multipartite graphs, distance-hereditary graphs, k-modular permutation graphs and complements of k-partite graphs (when k is fixed). We show that there is an efficient algorithm for C_4-packing on bipartite permutation graphs and we show that C_4-packing on bipartite graphs is NP-complete. We characterize the cobipartite graphs that have a triangle partition.
The concept of rainbow disconnection number of graphs was introduced by Chartrand et al. in 2018. Inspired by this concept, we put forward the concepts of rainbow vertex-disconnection and proper disconnection in graphs. In this paper, we first show that it is $NP$-complete to decide whether a given edge-colored graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)=4$ is proper disconnected. Then, for a graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\leq 3$ we show that $pd(G)\leq 2$ and determine the graphs with $pd(G)=1$ and $2$, respectively. Furthermore, we show that for a general graph $G$, deciding whether $pd(G)=1$ is $NP$-complete…
We present results on partitioning the vertices of $2$-edge-colored graphs into monochromatic paths and cycles. We prove asymptotically the two-color case of a conjecture of Sárközy: the vertex set of every $2$-edge-colored graph can be partitioned into at most $2α(G)$ monochromatic cycles, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Another direction, emerged recently from a conjecture of Schelp, is to consider colorings of graphs with given minimum degree. We prove that apart from $o(|V(G)|)$ vertices, the vertex set of any $2$-edge-colored graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1…
A path in an edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is called a rainbow path if no two edges of the path are colored the same. For a $κ$-connected graph $G$ and an integer $k$ with $1\leq k\leq κ$, the rainbow $k$-connectivity $rc_k(G)$ of $G$ is defined as the minimum integer $j$ for which there exists a $j$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that any two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by $k$ internally disjoint rainbow paths. A tree in an edge-colored graph $G$ is said to be a rainbow tree if no two edges on the tree share the same color. Given two positive integers $k$, $\ell$ with $k\geq 3$, the \emph{$(k,\ell)$-rainbow index} $rx_{k,\ell}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed in an edge-coloring of $G$ such that for any set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exist $\ell$ internally disjoint rainbow trees connecting $S$. This concept was introduced by Chartrand et al., and there have been very few results about it. In this paper, we investigate the $(k,\ell)$-rainbow index for complete bipartite graphs…

It is well-known that in every $r$-coloring of the edges of the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ there is a monochromatic connected component with at least ${m+n\over r}$ vertices. In this paper we study an extension of this problem by replacing complete bipartite graphs by bipartite graphs of large minimum degree. We conjecture that in every $r$-coloring of the edges of an $(X,Y)$-bipartite graph with $|X|=m$, $|Y|=n$, $δ(X,Y) > \left( 1 - \frac{1}{r+1}\right) n$ and $δ(Y,X) > \left( 1 - \frac{1}{r+1}\right) m$, there exists a monochromatic component on at least $\frac{m+n}{r}$ vertices (as…

It is well-known that in every $r$-coloring of the edges of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ there is a monochromatic connected component with at least ${2n\over r}$ vertices. It would be interesting to know whether we can additionally require that this large component be balanced; that is, is it true that in every $r$-coloring of $K_{n,n}$ there is a monochromatic component that meets both sides in at least $n/r$ vertices? Over forty years ago, Gyárfás and Lehel and independently Faudree and Schelp proved that any $2$-colored $K_{n,n}$ contains a monochromatic $P_n$. Very recently, Buci…

A star edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring with no $2$-colored path or cycle of length four. The star chromatic index $χ'_{st}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number $t$ for which $G$ has a star edge coloring with $t$ colors. We prove upper bounds for the star chromatic index of complete bipartite graphs; in particular we obtain tight upper bounds for the case when one part has size at most $3$. We also consider bipartite graphs $G$ where all vertices in one part have maximum degree $2$ and all vertices in the other part has maximum degree $b$. Let $k$ be an integer ($k\geq 1$), we pr…

Equivalently, any edge-coloring of $G$ with at least $rb(G,H)=f(G,H)+1$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $H$, where a rainbow subgraph of an edge-colored graph is such that no two edges of it have the same color. The number $rb(G,H)$ is called the {\it rainbow number of $H$ with respect to $G$}, and simply called the {\it bipartite rainbow number of $H$} if $G$ is the complete b…

For a vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|\geq 2$, a tree is called an \emph{$S$-tree} if it connects $S$ in $G$ . A \emph{$k$-proper coloring} of $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ having the property that for every set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exists a…
Given a simple undirected graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, the $k$-forcing number of $G$, denoted $F_k(G)$, is the minimum number of vertices that need to be initially colored so that all vertices eventually become colored during the discrete dynamical process described by the following rule. Starting from an initial set of colored vertices and stopping when all vertices are colored: if a colored vertex has at most $k$ non-colored neighbors, then each of its non-colored neighbors becomes colored. When $k=1$, this is equivalent to the zero forcing number, usually denoted with $Z(G)$, a rec…

We present here random distributions on $(D+1)$-edge-colored, bipartite graphs with a fixed number of vertices $2p$. These graphs are dual to $D$-dimensional orientable colored complexes. We investigate the behavior of quantities related to those random graphs, such as their number of connected components or the number of vertices of their dual complexes, as $p \to \infty$. The techniques involved in the study of these quantities also yield a Central Limit Theorem for the genus of a uniform map of order $p$, as $p \to \infty$.

Let $f(n,p,q)$ be the minimum number of colors necessary to color the edges of $K_n$ so that every $K_p$ is at least $q$-colored. We improve current bounds on the {7/4}n-3$, slightly improving the bound of Axenovich. We make small improvements on bounds of Erd\H os and Gyárfás by showing ${5/6}n+1\leq f(n,4,5)$ and for all even $n\not\equiv 1 \pmod 3$, $f(n,4,5)\leq n-1$ . For a complete bipartite graph $G=K_{n,n}$, we show an n-color construction to color the edges of $G$ so that every $C_4\subseteq G$ is colored by at least three colors. This improves the best known upper bound of M. Axenovi…
Consider a graph $G$ with a coloring of its edge set $E(G)$ from a set $Q = \set{c_1,c_2, \ldots, c_q}$. Let $Q_i$ be the set of all edges colored with $c_i$. Recently, Frieze defined a notion of the perfect matching color profile denoted by $\mcp(G)$, which is the set of vectors $(m_1, m_2, \ldots, m_q) \in [n]^q$ such that there exists a perfect matching $M$ in $G$ with $|Q_i \cap M| = m_i$ for all $i$. Let $\a_1, \a_2, \ldots, \a_q$ be positive constants such that $\sum_{i=1}^q \a_i = 1$. Let $G$ be the random bipartite graph $G_{n,n,p}$. Suppose the edges of $G$ are independently colored w…
A graph drawn in the plane with straight-line edges is called a geometric graph. If no path of length at most $k$ in a geometric graph $G$ is self-intersecting we call $G$ $k$-locally plane. The main result of this paper is a construction of $k$-locally plane graphs with a super-linear number of edges. For the proof we develop randomized thinning procedures for edge-colored bipartite (abstract) graphs that can be applied to other problems as well.
