Starting with a vertex-weighted pointed graph $(Γ,μ,v_0)$, we form the free loop algebra $\mathcal{S}_0$ defined in Hartglass-Penneys' article on canonical $\rm C^*$-algebras associated to a planar algebra. Under mild conditions, $\mathcal{S}_0$ is a non-nuclear simple $\rm C^*$-algebra with unique tracial state. There is a canonical polynomial subalgebra $A\subset \mathcal{S}_0$ together with a Dirac number operator $N$ such that $(A, L^2A,N)$ is a spectral triple. We prove the Haagerup-type bound of Ozawa-Rieffel to verify $(\mathcal{S}_0, A, N)$ yields a compact quantum metric space in the sense of Rieffel.
We give a weighted analog of Benjamini-Schramm convergence for vertex-weighted pointed graphs. As our $\rm C^*$-algebras are non-nuclear, we adjust the Lip-norm coming from $N$ to utilize the finite dimensional filtration of $A$. We then prove that convergence of vertex-weighted pointed graphs leads to quantum Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of the associated adjusted compact quantum metric spaces.
As an application, we apply our construction to the Guionnet-Jones-Shyakhtenko (GJS) $\rm C^*$-algebra associated to a planar algebra. We conclude that the compact quantum metric spaces coming from the GJS $\rm C^*$-algebras of many infinite families of planar algebras converge in quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance.
We propose a notion of isometric coaction of a compact quantum group on a compact quantum metric space in the framework of Rieffel where the metric structure is given by a Lipnorm. We prove the existence of a quantum isometry group for finite metric quantum spaces, preserving a given state.
Let N be a nest on a Hilbert space H and AlgN the corresponding nest algebra. We obtain a characterization of the compact and weakly compact multiplication operators defined on nest algebras. This characterization leads to a description of the closed ideal generated by the compact elements of AlgN . We also show that there is no non-zero weakly compact multiplication operator on AlgN / (AlgN $\cap$ K(H)).
In this paper, we prove a Galois correspondence for compact group actions on C*-algebras in the presence of a commuting minimal action. Namely, we show that there is a one to one correspondence between the C*-subalgebras that are globally invariant under the compact action and the commuting minimal action, that in addition contain the fixed point algebra of the compact action and the closed, normal subgroups of the compact group.
We introduce C*-algebras over C_{\infty}(Q,C) as Banach-Kantorovich *-algebras over the algebra C_{\infty}(Q,C) of extended continuous complex-valued functions, defined on comeager subsets of Stonean compact Q, whose norm satisfies conditions similar to the axioms of C*-algebras, and show that such algebras can be uniquely up to a Q-C*-isomorphism represented by means of a continuous complete fiber bundle of C*-algebras over Q.
We study the elementary C*-algebra whose elements are the sum of a diagonal plus a compact operator. We describe the structure of the unitary group, the sets of ideals, automorhisms and projections.
In the present paper 2-local derivations on various algebras of infinite dimensional matrix-valued functions on a compact are considered. It is proved that every 2-local derivation on such algebra is a derivation. Also we explain that the method developed in the given paper can be applied to associative, Jordan and Lie algebras of infinite dimensional matrix-valued functions on a compact.
A C*-metric algebra consists of a unital C*-algebra and a Leibniz Lip-norm on the C*-algebra. We show that if the Lip-norms concerned are lower semicontinuous, then any unital *-homomorphism from a C*-metric algebra to another one is necessarily Lipschitz. It results that the free product of two Lipschitz unital *-homomorphisms between C*-metric algebras coming from *-filtrations is still a Lipschitz unital *-homomorphism.
We introduce the notion of a quantum locally compact metric space, which is the noncommutative analogue of a locally compact metric space, and generalize to the nonunital setting the notion of quantum metric spaces introduced by Rieffel. We then provide several examples of such structures, including the Moyal plane, as well as compact quantum metric spaces and locally compact metric spaces. This paper provides an answer to the question raised in the literature about the proper notion of a quantum metric space in the nonunital setup and offers important insights into noncommutative geometry for…
We generalize some aspects of the theory of compact projections relative to a C*-algebra, to the setting of more general algebras. Our main result is that compact projections are the decreasing limits of `peak projections', and in the separable case compact projections are just the peak projections. We also establish new forms of the noncommutative Urysohn lemma relative to an operator algebra, and we show that a projection is compact iff the associated face in the state space of the algebra is weak* closed.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. Consider the C$^*$-algebra $C_0(G)$ of continuous complex functions on $G$, tending to 0 at infinity. The product in $G$ gives rise to a coproduct $Δ_G$ on the C$^*$-algebra $C_0(G)$. A locally compact {\it quantum} group is a pair $(A,Δ)$ of a C$^*$-algebra $A$ with a coproduct $Δ$ on $A$, satisfying certain conditions. The definition guarantees that the pair $(C_0(G),Δ_G)$ is a locally compact quantum group and that conversely, every locally compact quantum group $(A,Δ)$ is of this form when the underlying C$^*$-algebra $A$ is abelian. Assume now that $G$ …
In this paper, we introduce C*-algebraic partial compact quantum groups, which are quantizations of topological groupoids with discrete object set and compact morphism spaces. These C*-algebraic partial compact quantum groups are generalisations of Hayashi's compact face algebras to the case where the object set can be infinite. They form the C*-algebraic counterpart of an algebraic theory of partial compact quantum groups developed in an earlier paper by the author and T. Timmermann, the correspondence between which will be dealt with in a separate paper. As an interesting example to illustra…
We provide a detailed study of actions of the integers on compact quantum metric spaces, which includes general criteria ensuring that the associated crossed product algebra is again a compact quantum metric space in a natural way. We moreover provide a flexible set of assumptions ensuring that a continuous family of *-automorphisms of a compact quantum metric space, yields a field of crossed product algebras which varies continuously in Rieffel's quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance. Lastly we show how our results apply to continuous families of Lip-isometric actions on compact quantum metric sp…
We show that finitely subgraded Lie algebras of compact operators have invariant subspaces when conditions of quasinilpotence are imposed on certain components of the subgrading. This allows us to obtain some useful information about the structure of such algebras. As an application, we prove a number of results on the existence of invariant subspaces for algebraic structures of compact operators. Along the way we obtain new criteria for the triangularizability of a Lie algebra of compact operators.
We define the notion of invariant derivation of a C*-algebra under a compact quantum group action and prove that in certain conditions, such derivations are generators of one parameter automorphism groups.
We construct a topology on the standard Hilbert module $l^2(\mathcal A)$ over a unital $W^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$ such that any "compact" operator, (i.e.\ any operator in the norm closure of the linear span of the operators of the form $x\mapsto\left<y,x\right>z$) maps bounded sets into totally bounded sets.
We give some sufficient conditions for the injectivity of actions of compact quantum groups on $C^{\ast}$-algebra. As an application, we prove that any faithful smooth action by a compact quantum group on a compact smooth (not necessarily connected) manifold is injective. A similar result is proved for actions on $C^{\ast}$- algebras obtained by Rieffel-deformation of compact, smooth manifolds.
Given a compact metric space X and a unital C*-algebra A, we introduce a family of seminorms on the C*-algebra of continuous functions from X to A, denoted C(X, A), induced by classical Lipschitz seminorms that produce compact quantum metrics in the sense of Rieffel if and only if A is finite-dimensional. As a consequence, we are able isometrically embed X into the state space of C(X,A). Furthermore, we are able to extend convergence of compact metric spaces in the Gromov-Hausdorff distance to convergence of spaces of matrices over continuous functions on the associated compact metric spaces i…
We consider non-zero endomorphisms of the Dales and Davie algebras of infinitely differentiable functions on intervals in the real line. We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for a selfmap of the interval to induce a compact endomorphism of these algebras. We also determine the spectra of these compact endomorphisms.
We study closedness of the range, adjointability and generalized invertibility of modular operators between Hilbert modules over locally C*-algebras of coefficients. Our investigations and the recent results of M. Frank [Characterizing C*-algebras of compact operators by generic categorical properties of Hilbert C*-modules, {\it J. K-Theory} {\bf 2} (2008), 453-462] reveal a number of equivalence properties of the category of Hilbert modules over locally C*-algebras which characterize precisely the inverse limit of C*-algebras of the C*-algebra of compact operators.
We study multiplier algebras for a large class of Banach algebras which contains the group algebra $L_1(G)$, the Beurling algebras $L_1(G, ω)$, and the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$. This study yields numerous new results and unifies some existing theorems on $L_1(G)$ and $A(G)$ through an abstract Banach algebraic approach. Applications are obtained on representations of multipliers over locally compact quantum groups and on topological centre problems. In particular, five open problems in abstract harmonic analysis are solved.
Given a unital inductive limit of C*-algebras for which each C*-algebra of the inductive sequence comes equipped with a compact quantum metric of Rieffel, we produce sufficient conditions to build a compact quantum metric on the inductive limit from the quantum metrics on the inductive sequence by utilizing the completeness of the dual Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity of Latremoliere on compact quantum metric spaces. This allows us to place new quantum metrics on all unital AF algebras that extend our previous work with Latremoliere on unital AF algebras with faithful tracial state. As a consequen…
We obtain a fundamental inequality for a contraction with respect to a $C^*$-algebra valued metric space. As an application of this inequality a simple proof is given for the fixed point theorem in $C^*$-algebra valued metric space.
We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the Fourier algebra A(G) for a locally compact groupoid G. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.
Given a compact metric space X and a unital AF algebra A equipped with a faithful tracial state, we place quantum metrics on the tensor product of C(X) and A given established quantum metrics on C(X) and A from work with Bice and Latrémolière. We prove the inductive limit of C(X) tensor A given by A is a metric limit in the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity. We show that our quantum metric is compatible with the tensor product by producing a Leibniz rule on elementary tensors and showing the diameter of our quantum metric on the tensor product is bounded above the diameter of the Cartesian product …
This paper concerns the study of regular Fourier hypergroups through multipliers of their associated Fourier algebras. We establish hypergroup analogues of well-known characterizations of group amenability, introduce a notion of weak amenability for hypergroups, and show that every discrete commutative hypergroup is weakly amenable with constant 1. Using similar techniques, we provide a sufficient condition for amenability of hypergroup Fourier algebras, which, as an immediate application, answers one direction of a conjecture of Azimifard--Samei--Spronk [J. Funct. Anal. 256(5) 1544-1564, 2009…
We construct some inverse-closed algebras of bounded integral operators with operator-valued kernels, acting in spaces of vector-valued functions on locally compact groups. To this end we make systematic use of covariance algebras associated to $C^*$-dynamical systems defined by the abelian $C^*$-algebras of right uniformly continuous functions with respect to the left regular representation.
We consider commuting squares of finite dimensional von Neumann algebras having the algebra of complex numbers in the lower left corner. Examples include the vertex models, the spin models (in the sense of subfactor theory) and the commuting squares associated to finite dimensional Kac algebras. To any such commuting square we associate a compact Kac algebra and we compute the corresponding subfactor and its standard invariant in terms of it.
We characterize relatively norm compact sets in the regular $C^*$-algebra of finitely generated Coxeter groups using a geometrically defined positive semigroup acting on the algebra.
In this paper we construct and study the representation theory of a Hopf C^*-algebra with approximate unit, which constitutes quantum analogue of a compact group C^*-algebra. The construction is done by first introducing a convolution-product on an arbitrary Hopf algebra H with integral, and then constructing the L_2 and C^*-envelopes of H (with the new convolution-product) when H is a compact Hopf *-algebra.
We prove a number of results having to do with equipping type-I $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras with compact quantum group structures, the two main ones being that such a compact quantum group is necessarily co-amenable, and that if the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra in question is an extension of a non-zero finite direct sum of elementary $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras by a commutative unital $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra then it must be finite-dimensional.
We study group algebras for compact groups in the category of real and complex weakly complete vector spaces. We also show that the group algebra is a quotient of the weakly complete universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of the compact group. We relate this to Tannaka duality, and to functorial properties of the group algebra. We determine the structure of the group algebra in terms of the irreducible representation, both in the real and the complex case. The particular case of a compact abelian group is worked out in detail.
In this paper we compute the K-theory (algebraic and topological) and entire periodic cyclic homology of compact Lie group C*-algebras, define Chern characters between them and show that the Chern characters in both topological and algebraic cases are isomorphisms.
In this paper we introduce a new way of deforming convolution algebras and Fourier algebras on locally compact groups. We demonstrate that this new deformation allows us to reveal some informations of the underlying groups by examinining Banach algebra properties of deformed algebras. More precisely, we focus on representability as an operator algebra of deformed convolution algebras on compact connected Lie groups with connection to the real dimension of the underlying group. Similary, we investigate complete representability as an operator algebra of deformed Fourier algebras on some finitel…
We expose a K-theoretic approach to study group C*-algebras and C*-algebraic compact quantum groups: 1. The conception of multidimensional geometric quantization and the index of group C*-algebras; 2. the entire homology of noncommutative de Rham currents and the noncommutative Chern characters, and their computation for C*-algebras of compact Lie groups and compact quantum groups.
We formulate a definition of isometric action of a compact quantum group (CQG) on a compact metric space, generalizing Banica's definition for finite metric spaces. For metric spaces $(X,d)$ which can be isometrically embedded in some Euclidean space, we prove the existence of a universal object in the category of the compact quantum groups acting isometrically on $(X,d)$. In fact, our existence theorem applies to a larger class, namely for any compact metric space $(X,d)$ which admits a one-to-one continuous map $f : X \raro \IR^n$ for some $n$ such that $d_0(f(x),f(y))=ϕ(d(x,y))$ (where $d_0…
Motivated by noncommutative geometry and quantum physics, the concept of `metric operator field' is introduced. Roughly speaking, a metric operator field is a vector field on a set with values in self tensor product of a bundle of C*-algebras, satisfying properties similar to an ordinary metric (distance function). It is proved that to any such object there naturally correspond a Banach *-algebra that we call Lipschitz algebra, a class of probabilistic metrics, and (under some conditions) a (nontrivial) continuous field of C*-algebras in the sense of Dixmier. It is proved that for metric opera…
We study and classify free actions of compact quantum groups on unital C*-algebras in terms of generalized factor systems. Moreover, we use these factor systems to show that all finite coverings of irrational rotation C*-algebras are cleft.
