We consider non-zero endomorphisms of the Dales and Davie algebras of infinitely differentiable functions on intervals in the real line. We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for a selfmap of the interval to induce a compact endomorphism of these algebras. We also determine the spectra of these compact endomorphisms.
Let B be a unital commutative semi-simple Banach algebra. We study endomorphisms of B which are simultaneously Riesz operators. Clearly compact and power compact endomorphisms are Riesz. Several general theorems about Riesz endomorphisms are proved, and these results are then applied to the question of when Riesz endomorphisms of certain algebras are necessarily power compact. This paper is a continuation of our study of compact, power compact, Riesz, and quasicompact endomorphisms of commutative Banach algebras. Previously it has been shown that if $B$ is a unital commutative semisimple Banach algebra with connected character space, and $T$ is a unital endomorphism of $B$, then $T$ is quasicompact if and only if the operators $T^n$ converge in operator norm to a rank-one unital endomorphism of $B$. In this note the discussion is extended in two ways: we discuss endomorphisms of commutative Banach algebras which are semiprime and not necessarily semisimple; we also …
In this note we study the endomorphisms of certain Banach algebras of infinitely differentiable functions on compact plane sets, associated with weight sequences M. These algebras were originally studied by Dales, Davie and McClure. In a previous paper this problem was solved in the case of the unit interval for many weights M. Here we investigate the extent to which the methods used previously apply to general compact plane sets, and introduce some new methods. In particular, we obtain many results for the case of the closed unit disc. This research was supported by EPSRC grant GR/M31132
We investigate properties of essential spectra of disjointness preserving operators acting on Banach $C(K)$-modules. In particular, we prove that under some very mild conditions the upper semi-Fredholm spectrum of such an operator is rotation invariant. In the last part of the paper we provide a full description of the spectrum and the essential spectra of operators acting on Kaplansky modules of the form $T = wU$, where $w \in C(K)$, $U$ is a $d$-isomorphism, and the spectrum of $U$ is a subset of the unit circle.
Introducing the notions of (inner) $σ$-derivation, (inner) $σ$-endomorphism and one-parameter group of $σ$-endomorphisms ($σ$-dynamics) on a Banach algebra, we correspond to each $σ$-dynamics a $σ$-derivation named as its $σ$-infinitesimal generator. We show that the $σ$-infinitesimal generator of a $σ$-dynamics of inner $σ$-endomorphisms is an inner $σ$-derivation and deal with the converse. We also establish a nice generalized Leibniz formula and extend the Kleinenckr--Sirokov theorem for $σ$-derivations under certain conditions.
We give formulas for the spectral radius of weighted endomorphisms $aα: C(X,D)\to C(X,D)$, $a\in C(X,D)$, where $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space and $D$ is a unital Banach algebra. Under the assumption that $α$ generates a partial dynamical system $(X,φ)$, we establish two kinds of variational principles for $r(aα)$: using linear extensions of $(X,φ)$ and using Lyapunov exponents associated with ergodic measures for $(X,φ)$. This requires considering (twisted) cocycles over $(X,φ)$ with values in an arbitrary Banach algebra $D$, and thus our analysis can not be reduced to any of mutliplicative…
We prove an existence and uniqueness result for the infinitely delayed stochastic evolution equation $$dU(t) = &\big(AU(t) + F(t,U_t)\big) dt + B(t,U_t)dW_H(t), t\in[0,T_0]$$ where $A$ is the generator of an analytic semigroup on a UMD space $E$, $F$ and $B$ satisfy Lipschitz conditions and $\mathscr{B}$ is a weighted $L^p$ history space. This paper is based on recent work of van Neerven \emph{et al.}~which developed the theory of abstract stochastic evolution equations in UMD spaces.
We construct infinitely differentiable norms and partitions of unity for a class of Banach spaces which includes all spaces $\C(K)$ with $K$ a countable compact space, and all spaces $\C_0[0,Ω)$ with $Ω$ an ordinal.
The use of the properties of actions on an algebra to enrich the study of the algebra is well-trodden and still fashionable. Here, the notion and study of endomorphic elements of (Banach) algebras are introduced. This study is initiated, in the hope that it will open up, further, the structure of (Banach) algebras in general, enrich the study of endomorphisms and provide examples. In particular, here, we use it to classify algebras for the convenience of our study. We also present results on the structure of some classes of endomorphic elements and bring out the contrast with idempotents.
Given a symbol $φ,$ i.e., a holomorphic endomorphism of the unit disc, we consider the composition operator $C_φ(f)=f\circφ$ defined on the Banach spaces of holomorphic functions $A(\mathbb{D})$ and $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$. We obtain different conditions on the symbol $φ$ which characterize when the composition operator is mean ergodic and uniformly mean ergodic in the corresponding spaces. These conditions are related to the asymptotic behaviour of the iterates of the symbol. As an appendix, we deal with some particular case in the setting of weighted Banach spaces of holomorphic functions.
A remarkable result of Molnár [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 126 (1998), 853-861] states that automorphisms of the algebra of operators acting on a separable Hilbert space is stable under "small" perturbations. More precisely, if $ϕ,ψ$ are endomorphisms of $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ such that $\|ϕ(A)-ψ(A)\|<\|A\|$ and $ψ$ is surjective then so is $ϕ$. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to a larger class of Banach spaces including $\ell_p$ and $L_p$ spaces ($1<p<+\infty$). En route to the proof we show that for any Banach space $X$ from the above class all faithful, unital, separable, ref…
In this paper, we introduce a new notion of amenability, $σ-$Connes ideal, say, for a large class of dual Banach algebras. We extend the concept of ideal Connes amenability and study their properties. Let $σ$ be a $weak^{*}$-continuous endomorphism on a dual Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with dense range. Then the concept of ideal Connes-amenability and $σ-$ ideally Connes amenability are the same. We gave some general results and hereditary properties with some examples for this new notion of amenability.
Let $T$ be a bounded linear operator on a (real or complex) Banach space $X$. If $(a_n)$ is a sequence of non-negative numbers tending to 0. Then, the set of $x \in X$ such that $\|T^nx\| \geqslant a_n \|T^n\|$ for infinitely many $n$'s has a complement which is both $σ$-porous and Haar-null. We also compute (for some classical Banach space) optimal exponents $q>0$, such that for every non nilpotent operator $T$, there exists $x \in X$ such that $(\|T^nx\|/\|T^n\|) \notin \ell^{q}(\mathbb{N})$, using techniques which involve the modulus of asymptotic uniform smoothness of $X$.
In finitely-dimensional spaces the sum range of a series has to be an affine subspace. It is long known this is not the case in infinitely dimensional Banach spaces. In particular in 1984 M.I. Kadets and K. Wozniakowski obtained an example of a series the sum range of which consisted of two points, and asked whether it is possible to obtain more than two, but finitely many points. This paper answers the question positively, by showing how to obtain an arbitrary finite set as the sum range of a series in any infinitely dimensional Banach space.
In this paper we study the behavior of Hamilton operators and their spectra which depend on infinitely many coupling parameters or, more generally, parameters taking values in some Banach space. One of the physical models which motivate this framework is a quantum particle moving in a more or less disordered medium. One may however also envisage other scenarios where operators are allowed to depend on interaction terms in a manner we are going to discuss below. The central idea is to vary the occurring infinitely many perturbing potentials independently. As a side aspect this then leads natura…
For every well founded tree $\mathcal{T}$ having a unique root such that every non-maximal node of it has countable infinitely many immediate successors, we construct a $\mathcal{L}_\infty$-space $X_{\mathcal{T}}$. We prove that for each such tree $\mathcal{T}$, the Calkin algebra of $X_{\mathcal{T}}$ is homomorphic to $C(\mathcal{T})$, the algebra of continuous functions defined on $\mathcal{T}$, equipped with the usual topology. We use this fact to conclude that for every countable compact metric space $K$ there exists a $\mathcal{L}_\infty$-space whose Calkin algebra is isomorphic, as a Ban…

It is known that the expanders arising as increasing sequences of level sets of warped cones, as introduced by the second-named author, do not coarsely embed into a Banach space as soon as the corresponding warped cone does not coarsely embed into this Banach space. Combining this with non-embeddability results for warped cones by Nowak and Sawicki, which relate the non-embeddability of a warped cone to a spectral gap property of the underlying action, we provide new examples of expanders that do not coarsely embed into any Banach space with nontrivial type. Moreover, we prove that these expan…

Each bounded holomorphic function on the infinite dimensional polydisk $\mathbb{D}^\infty$, $f \in H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$, defines a formal monomial series expansion that in general does not converge to $f$. The set $\mon H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$ contains all $ z $'s in which the monomial series expansion of each function $f \in H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$ sums up to $f(z)$. Bohr, Bohnenblust and Hille, showed that it contains $\ell_{2} \cap \mathbb{D}^\infty$, but does not contain any of the slices $\ell_{2+\varepsilon} \cap \mathbb{D}^\infty$. This was done in the context of Diric…
Bounded holomorphic functions on the disk have radial limits in almost every direction, as follows from Fatou's theorem. Given a zero-measure set $E$ in the torus $\mathbb T$, we study the set of functions such that $\lim_{r \to 1^{-}} f(r \, w)$ fails to exist for every $w\in E$ (such functions were first constructed by Lusin). We show that the set of Lusin-type functions, for a fixed zero-measure set $E$, contain algebras of algebraic dimension $\mathfrak{c}$ (except for the zero function). When the set $E$ is countable, we show also in the several-variable case that the Lusin-type functions…
