We give a detailed proof that locally Noetherian moduli stacks of sections carry canonical obstruction theories. As part of the argument we construct a dualizing sheaf and trace map, in the lisse-etale topology, for families of tame twisted curves, when the base stack is locally Noetherian.
In a previous paper, the first two named authors established an isomorphism between the moduli space of framed flags of sheaves on the projective plane and the moduli space of stable representations of a certain quiver. In the present note, we substitute one of the claims made, namely [5, Theorem 17], for a weaker claim regarding the existence of unobstructed points in the quiver moduli space. We also extend some of the results of the cited paper, concerning the maximal stability chamber within which the isomorphism mentioned holds, and the existence of a perfect obstruction theory for the qui…
We introduce semi-perfect obstruction theory of a Deligne-Mumford stack $X$ consisting of local perfect obstruction theories with weak comparisons on overlaps. We show that semi-perfect obstruction theory shares similar properties with perfect obstruction theory. We use semi-perfect obstruction theory to construct virtual cycles of moduli of derived objects on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In the revision, we assume the existence of obstruction sheaf and put the (coarse moduli of the) intrinsic normal cone inside the obstruction sheaf. This avoids the issue of descent of bundle stacks of the local ob…
Let $C$ be a curve of genus $g$. A coherent system on $C$ is a pair $(E,V)$, where $E$ is a finite rank vector bundle on $C$ and $V$ is a linear subspace of the space of global sections of $E$. The type of a coherent system $(E,V)$ is a triple $(n,d,k)$, where $n$ is the rank of $E$, $d$ is the degree of $E$ and $k$ is the dimension of $V$. The notion of stability for a coherent system $(E,V)$ differs from the stability of the bundle $E$ and depends on the choice of a real parameter $α$. The moduli space of $α$-stable coherent systems of type $(n,d,k)$ has an expected dimension $β= β(n,d,k)$ w…
We study the section conjecture of anabelian geometry and the sufficiency of the finite descent obstruction to the Hasse principle for the moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties and of curves over number fields. For the former we show that the section conjecture fails and the finite descent obstruction holds for a general class of adelic points, assuming several well-known conjectures. This is done by relating the problem to a local-global principle for Galois representations. For the latter, we prove some partial results that indicate that the finite descent obstruction suff…
Let $G$ be $Sl_n, Sp(2n)$ or SO(2n). We consider the moduli space $M$ of semistable principal $G$-bundles over a curve $X$. Our main result is that if $U$ is a Zariski open subset of $M$ then there is no universal bundle on $U\times X$.
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
The moduli space of canonical divisors (with prescribed zeros and poles) on nonsingular curves is not compact since the curve may degenerate. We define a proper moduli space of twisted canonical divisors in the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable pointed curves which includes the space of canonical divisors as an open subset. The theory leads to geometric/combinatorial constraints on the closures of the moduli spaces of canonical divisors. In case the differentials have at least one pole (the strictly meromorphic case), the moduli spaces of twisted canonical divisors on genus g curves are o…
We prove that the moduli of stable supercurves with punctures is a smooth proper DM stack and study an analog of the Mumford's isomorphism for its canonical line bundle.
A Finsler metric, whose holomorphic curvature is bounded from above by a negative constant, is constructed on the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds including singularities. Demailly's version of Ahlfors' lemma yields hyperbolicity of the moduli stack.
We study the log canonical models of the moduli space MBar_{0,n} of pointed stable genus zero curves with respect to the standard log canonical divisors K+aD, where D denotes the boundary. In particular we show that, as a formal consequence of a conjecture by Fulton regarding the ample cone of MBar_{0,n}, these log canonical models are equal to certain of Hassett's weighted pointed curve spaces.
We show that the moduli spaces of non-triple cyclic coverings of genus 2 curves and that of even spin curves of genus 2 are birationally isomorphic via the Prym map. We describe the log canonical models of the moduli space of even spin curves of genus 2 and use this to extend the above birational map.
In this paper, we initiate our investigation of log canonical models for the moduli space of curves with the boundary divisor $\a \d$ as we decrease $\a$ from 1 to 0. We prove that for the first critical value $\a = 9/11$, the log canonical model is isomorphic to the moduli space of pseudostable curves, which have nodes and cusps as singularities. We also show that $\a = 7/10$ is the next critical value, i.e., the log canonical model stays the same in the interval $(7/10, 9/11]$. In the appendix, we develop a theory of log canonical models of stacks that explains how these can be expressed in …
We study the moduli space of minimal surfaces of general type with $K_S^2 = 1$ and $p_g = 2$ and show that it is irreducible, has dimension $28$ and admits a compactification which is unirational.
We run Mori's program for the moduli space of pointed stable rational curves with divisor $K +\sum a_{i}ψ_{i}$. We prove that, without assuming the F-conjecture, the birational model for the pair is the Hassett's moduli space of weighted pointed stable rational curves, without any modification of weight coefficients.
The first obstruction to splitting a supermanifold S is one of the three components of its super Atiyah class, the two other components being the ordinary Atiyah classes on the reduced space M of the even and odd tangent bundles of S. We evaluate these classes explicitly for the moduli space of super Riemann surfaces ("super moduli space") and its reduced space, the moduli space of spin curves. These classes are interpreted in terms of certain extensions arising from line bundles on the square of the varying (super) Riemann surface. These results are used to give a new proof of the non-project…
We give a universal approach to the deformation-obstruction theory of objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves over a smooth projective family. We recover and generalise the obstruction class of Lowen and Lieblich, and prove that it is a product of Atiyah and Kodaira--Spencer classes. This allows us to obtain deformation-invariant virtual cycles on moduli spaces of objects of the derived category on threefolds.
Generalizing the well-known Shafarevich hyperbolicity conjecture, it has been conjectured by Viehweg that a quasi-projective manifold that admits a generically finite morphism to the moduli stack of canonically polarized varieties is necessarily of log general type. Given a quasi-projective surface that maps to the moduli stack, we employ extension properties of logarithmic pluri-forms to establish a strong relationship between the moduli map and the minimal model program of the surface. As a result, we can describe the fibration induced by the moduli map quite explicitly. A refined affirmativ…
We give a functorial normal crossing compactification of the moduli of smooth marked cubic surfaces entirely analogous to the Grothendieck-Knudsen compactification $M_{0,n} \subset \bar{M}_{0,n}$.
We describe the final log canonical model of the moduli space of stable curves of genus four. We prove that the rational map from $\bar{M}_4$ to this model contracts the Petri and the boundary divisors and flips the hyperelliptic locus. As an application, we find an exact bound on slopes of moving divisors on $\bar{M}_4$.
We compare the deformation theory and the analytic structure of the Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces of a Kähler surface to the corresponding components of the Hilbert scheme, and show that they are isomorphic. Next we show how to compute the invariant in case the moduli space is smooth but not of the expected dimension, and apply this study to elliptic surfaces. Finally we discuss ruled surfaces, both products and more general ruled surfaces. For product ruled surfaces we relate the infinitesimal structure of the moduli spaces to Brill-Noether theory and compute the invariant in special cases. Fo…
We prove a global Torelli theorem for pairs (Y,D), where Y is a smooth projective rational surface and D is an effective anti-canonical divisor which is a cycle of rational curves. This Torelli theorem was conjectured by Friedman in 1984. In addition, we construct natural universal families for such pairs.
We study rank-one sheaves and stable pairs on a smooth projective complex surface. We obtain an embedding of the moduli space of limit stable pairs into a smooth space. The embedding induces a perfect obstruction theory, which, over a surface with irregularity 0, agrees with the usual deformation-obstruction theory. The perfect obstruction theory defines a virtual fundamental class on the moduli space. Using the embedding, we show that the virtual class equals the Euler class of a vector bundle on the smooth ambient space. As an application, we show that on $\mathbb{P}^2$, the expected count o…
We show that the compatibility of the relative canonical sheaf with base change fails generally in families of normal varieties. Furthermore, it always fails if the general fiber of a family of pure dimension n is Cohen-Macaulay and the special fiber contains a strictly S_{n-1} point. In particular, in moduli spaces with functorial relative canonical sheaves Cohen-Macaulay schemes can not degenerate to S_{n-1} schemes. Another, less immediate consequence is that the canonical sheaf of an S_{n-1}, G_2 scheme of pure dimension n is not S_3.
In this article we study the deformation of finite maps and show how to use this deformation theory to construct varieties with given invariants in a projective space. Among other things, we prove a criterion that determines when a finite map can be deformed to a one--to--one map. We use this criterion to construct new simple canonical surfaces with different $c_1^2$ and $χ$. Our general results enable us to describe some new components of the moduli of surfaces of general type. We also find infinitely many moduli spaces $\mathcal M_{(x',0,y)}$ having one component whose general point correspo…
Using Kollár's semipositivity results, we produce a number of nef and ample tautological divisors on Hassett's spaces of weighted stable pointed curves. As an application, we prove that Hassett's spaces are log canonical models of Deligne-Mumford spaces of stable pointed curves.
We show how a quasi-smooth derived enhancement of a Deligne-Mumford stack X naturally endows X with a functorial perfect obstruction theory in the sense of Behrend-Fantechi. This result is then applied to moduli of maps and perfect complexes on a smooth complex projective variety. For moduli of maps, we consider X=S an algebraic K3-surface, $g\geq 0$, and $β$ a curve class, and we construct a derived stack whose truncation is the usual stack of pointed stable maps from curves of genus g to S hitting the class $β$, and such that the inclusion of the trunaction induces on a perfect obstruction t…
In this paper I present a new geometric approach to the factorization rule for generalised theta functions. Let $X$ be an irreducible projective nodal curve with one singularity and let $Y$ be its normalization. Recently I have constructed the moduli stack $GVB(X)$ of rank $n$ Gieseker vector bundles on $X$ and have shown that its normalization is a locally trivial fibration over the moduli stack $VB(Y)$ of vector bundles on $Y$, where the fibre is a canonical compactification of $Gl_n$. In this paper I prove a canonical direct sum decomposition of the space of global sections of a power of th…
For a smooth canonically embedded curve $C$ of genus $9$ together with a pencil $|L|$ of degree $6$, we study the relative canonical resolution of $C\subset X\subset \mathbb{P}^8$, where $X$ is the scroll swept out by the pencil $|L|$. We show that the second syzygy bundle in this resolution of $C\subset X$ is unbalanced. The proof reveals a new geometric connection between the universal Brill--Noether variety $\mathcal{W}^1_{9,6}$ and a moduli space $\mathcal{F}^\mathfrak{h}$ of lattice polarized $K3$ surfaces (for a certain rank $3$ lattice $\mathfrak{h}$). As a by-product we prove the unira…
In this paper we collect some results on the obstruction spaces for rational surface singularities and minimally elliptic surface singularities. Based on the known results we calculate higher obstruction spaces for such surface singularities. The results imply that in general the higher obstruction spaces of deforming semi-log-canonical surfaces do not vanish. We apply the calculation result to show that there is no Li-Tian and Behrend-Fantechi style virtual fundamental class on such moduli space of semi-log-canonical surfaces.
Compactifications of moduli spaces of (1,p)-polarized abelian surfaces with level structures of canonical type have been described in great detail by Hulek, Kahn and Weintraub. The aim of this paper is to determine some invariants of smooth models of these moduli spaces. In particular, a geometric description of their canonical divisors is given and their Chern numbers are computed.
In this article, we study the moduli of irregular surfaces of general type with at worst canonical singularities satisfying $K_X^2 = 4p_g(X)-8$, for any even integer $p_g\geq 4$. These surfaces also have unbounded irregularity $q$. We carry out our study by investigating the deformations of the canonical morphism $φ:X\to \mathbb{P}^N$, where $φ$ is Galois of degree 4. These canonical covers are classified in by the first two authors into four distinct families. We show that any deformation of $φ$ factors through a double cover of a ruled surface and, hence, is never birational. More interestin…
On a threefold with trivial canonical bundle, Kuranishi theory gives an algebro-geometry construction of the (local analytic) Hilbert scheme of curves at a smooth holomorphic curve as a gradient scheme, that is, the zero-scheme of the exterior derivative of a holomorphic function on a (finite-dimensional) polydisk. (The corresponding fact in an infinite dimensional setting was long ago discovered by physicists.) An analogous algebro-geometric construction for the holomorphic Chern-Simons functional is presented giving the local analytic moduli scheme of a vector bundle. An analogous gradient s…
We prove a formula of log canonical models for moduli space $\bar{M}_{g,n}$ of pointed stable curves which describes all Hassett's moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable curves in a single equation. This is a generalization of the preceding result for genus zero to all genera.
This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonic…
Given a degree one del Pezzo surface with canonical singularities, the linear series generated by twice the anti-canonical divisor exhibits the surface as the double cover of the quadric cone branched along a sextic curve. It is natural to ask if this description extends to the boundary of a compactification of the moduli space of degree one del Pezzo surfaces. The goal of this paper is to show that this is indeed the case. In particular, we give an explicit classification of the boundary of the moduli space of anti-canonically polarized broken del Pezzo surfaces of degree one as double covers…
Almost perfect obstruction theories were introduced in an earlier paper by the authors as the appropriate notion in order to define virtual structure sheaves and $K$-theoretic invariants for many moduli stacks of interest, including $K$-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of sheaves and complexes on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The construction of virtual structure sheaves is based on the $K$-theory and Gysin maps of sheaf stacks. In this paper, we generalize the virtual torus localization and cosection localization formulas and their combination to the setting of almost perfect obstruction theory…
This is the third installment in our series of articles (dg-ga/9712005, dg-ga/9710032) on the application of the PU(2) monopole equations to prove Witten's conjecture (hep-th/9411102) concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. The moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations provides a noncompact cobordism between links of compact moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles of Seiberg-Witten type and the moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections, which appear as singularities in this larger moduli space. In this paper we prove …
Perfect quadratic forms give a toroidal compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian g-folds that is Q-factorial and whose ample classes are characterized, over any base. In characteristic zero it has canonical singularities if g is at least 5, and is the canonical model (in the sense of Mori and Reid) if g is at least 12.
Let $X$ be a complex scheme acted on by an affine algebraic group $G$. We prove that the Atiyah class of a $G$-equivariant perfect complex on $X$, as constructed by Huybrechts and Thomas, is $G$-equivariant in a precise sense. As an application, we show that, if $G$ is reductive, the obstruction theory on the fine relative moduli space $M\to B$ of simple perfect complexes on a $G$-invariant smooth projective family $Y\to B$ is $G$-equivariant. The results contained here are meant to suggest how to check the equivariance of the natural obstruction theories on a wide variety of moduli spaces equ…
We describe weighted projective lines in the sense of Geigle and Lenzing by a moduli problem on the canonical algebra of Ringel. We then go on to study generators of the derived categories of coherent sheaves on the total spaces of their canonical bundles, and show that they are rarely tilting. We also give a moduli construction for these total spaces for weighted projective lines with three orbifold points.
A cheap method for constructing canonical models and complete moduli for complex projective varieties with a structure called "rational plurifibration" is given. A result about semistable reduction (whose nature is slightly different from alg-geom/9707012) is deduced. The method involves recursive application of moduli stacks of twisted stable maps (math.AG/9908167) and a systematic circumvention of any difficult MMP issues.
There is a canonical isomorphism between the coarse moduli spaces of somooth hyperelliptic curves of genus g and binary forms of degree 2g+2 with nonzero discriminant. In this paper, we study the extension of this isomorphism to the compactification of these moduli spaces. The main result is that the canonical isomorphism above extends to a holomorphic map f_g from the compactication of the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus g to the compactification of the moduli space of binary forms of degree 2g+2. Moreover, we work out how the boundary components are contracted by the map f_g.
In this work we study the moduli part in the canonical bundle formula of an lc-trivial fibration whose generic fibre is a rational curve. In particular we find a bound for the denominators of the discriminant and the moduli divisor.
As was shown by Harer the second homology of ${\mathbb M}_g$, the moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, is of rank 1, provided $g \geq 3$. This means a nontrivial second de Rham cohomology class on ${\mathbb M}_g$ is unique up to constant factor. But several canonical 2-forms on the moduli space have been constructed in various geometric contexts, and differ from each other. In this article we review some of constructions in order to provide materials for future research on "secondary geometry" of the moduli space ${\mathbb M}_g$.
We give a log-geometric description of the space of twisted canonical divisors constructed by Farkas--Pandharipande. In particular, we introduce the notion of a principal rubber $k$-log-canonical divisor, and we study its moduli space. It is a proper Deligne--Mumford stack admitting a perfect obstruction theory whose virtual fundamental cycle is of dimension $2g-3+n$. In the so-called strictly meromorphic case with $k=1$, the moduli space is of the expected dimension and the push-forward of its virtual fundamental cycle to the moduli space of stable curves equals the weighted fundamental class…
In this paper, we completely work out the log minimal model program for the moduli space of stable curves of genus three. We employ a rational multiple $αδ$ of the divisor $δ$ of singular curves as the boundary divisor, construct the log canonical model for the pair $(\bar{\mathcal M}_3, αδ)$ using geometric invariant theory as we vary $α$ from one to zero, and give a modular interpretation of each log canonical model and the birational maps between them. By using the modular description, we are able to identify all but one log canonical models with existing compactifications of $M_3$, some ne…
1) Assuming log Minimal Model Conjecture, we give a construction of a complete moduli space of stable log pairs of arbitrary dimension generalizing directly the space M_{g,n} of pointed stable curves. Each stable pair has semi log canonical singularities. 2) We prove that a stable quasiabelian pair, defined by author and I.Nakamura as the limit of abelian varieties with theta divisors, has semi log canonical singularities.
We extend some of the results obtained for subvarieties of the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds in "Base spaces of non-isotrivial families of smooth minimal models" (math.AG/0103122) to moduli of polarized minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero. To this aim we first show that for those manifolds there are no non isotrivial families of minimal models, which are birationally isotrivial. In the last chapter, we discuss the rigidity of curves in the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds and of polarized minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero.
