Following a suggestion of Hovey and Strickland, we study the category of $K(k) \vee K(k+1) \vee \cdots \vee K(n)$-local spectra. When $k = 0$, this is equivalent to the category of $E(n)$-local spectra, while for $k = n$, this is the category of $K(n)$-local spectra, both of which have been studied in detail by Hovey and Strickland. Based on their ideas, we classify the localizing and colocalizing subcategories, and give characterizations of compact and dualizable objects. We construct an Adams type spectral sequence and show that when $p \gg n$ it collapses with a horizontal vanishing line above filtration degree $n^2+n-k$ at the $E_2$-page for the sphere spectrum. We then study the Picard group of $K(k) \vee K(k+1) \vee \cdots \vee K(n)$-local spectra, showing that this group is algebraic, in a suitable sense, when $p \gg n$. We also consider a version of Gross--Hopkins duality in this category. A key concept throughout is the use of descent.
We propose a generalization of Sullivan's de Rham homotopy theory to non-simply connected spaces. The formulation is such that the real homotopy type of a manifold should be the closed tensor dg-category of flat bundles on it much the same as the real homotopy type of a simply connected manifold is the de Rham algebra in original Sullivan's theory. We prove the existence of a model category structure on the category of small closed tensor dg-categories and as a most simple case, confirm an equivalence between the homotopy category of spaces whose fundamental groups are finite and whose higher …
This is an expository paper providing an overview of the unstable motivic homotopy category using the theory of $(\infty,1)$-categories. In this paper, we examine two constructions in the literature and discuss their equivalence.
In this article we study thick ideals defined by periodic self maps in the stable motivic homotopy category over $\mathbb{C}$. In addition, we extend some results of Ruth Joachimi about the relation between thick ideals defined by motivic Morava K-theories and the preimages of the thick ideals in the stable homotopy category under Betti realization.
Let $R$ be a ring and Ch($R$) the category of chain complexes of $R$-modules. We put an abelian model structure on Ch($R$) whose homotopy category is equivalent to $K(Proj)$, the homotopy category of all complexes of projectives. However, the cofibrant objects are not complexes of projectives, but rather all complexes of flat modules. The trivial objects are what Positselski calls contraacyclic complexes and so the homotopy category coincides with his contraderived category. We in fact construct this model on the category of chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves on any scheme $X$ admitting…
In this paper we study the global structure of the stable homotopy theory of spectra. We establish criteria for when the homotopy theory associated to a given stable model category agrees with the classical stable homotopy theory of spectra. One sufficient condition is that the associated homotopy category is equivalent to the stable homotopy category as a triangulated category with an action of the ring of stable homotopy groups of spheres. In other words, the classical stable homotopy theory, with all of its higher order information, is determined by the homotopy category as a triangulated c…
We investigate a new case of rigidity in stable homotopy theory which is the rigidity of the $K(1)$-local stable homotopy category $\mathrm{Ho}(L_{K(1)}\mathrm{Sp})$ at $p=2$. In other words, we show that recovering higher homotopy information by just looking at the triangulated structure of $\mathrm{Ho}(L_{K(1)}\mathrm{Sp})$ is possible, which is a property that only few interesting stable model categories are known to possess.
Algebraic topological methods have been used successfully in concurrency theory, the domain of theoretical computer science that deals with distributed computing. L. Fajstrup, E. Goubault, and M. Raussen have introduced partially ordered spaces (pospaces) as a model for concurrent systems. In this paper it is shown that the category of pospaces under a fixed pospace is both a fibration and a cofibration category in the sense of H. Baues. The homotopy notion in this fibration and cofibration category is relative directed homotopy. It is also shown that the category of pospaces is a closed model…
This work was intended as an attempt to investigate a model of irreversible process and natural phenomena. For this, we introduce the notion of irreversible path (that for brevity we write ir-path), ir-homotopy, ir-contractible space, and Lusternik-Schnirelmann ir-category by equipping the $I=[0,1]$ with left order topology. We will restrict the irreversibility of definitions to $T_0$ Spaces, such that for $T_1$ spaces, the ir-paths are constant. After providing some theorems and properties of these notions, eventually, we prove that Lusternik-Schnirelmann ir-category is an invariant of ir-hom…

The embedded cobordism category under study in this paper generalizes the category of conformal surfaces, introduced by G. Segal in order to formalize the concept of field theories. Our main result identifies the homotopy type of the classifying space of the embedded d-dimensional cobordism category for all d. For d=2, our results lead to a new proof of the generalized Mumford conjecture, somewhat different in spirit from the original one.
In this paper we describe two ways on which cofibred categories give rise to bisimplicial sets. The "fibred nerve" is a natural extension of Segal's classical nerve of a category, and it constitutes an alternative simplicial description of the homotopy type of the total category. If the fibration is splitting, then one can construct the "cleaved nerve", a smaller variant which emerges from a distinguished closed cleavage. We interpret some classical theorems by Thomason and Quillen in terms of our constructions, and use the fibred and cleaved nerve to establish new results on homotopy and homo…
We define a simplicial enrichment on the category of differential graded Hopf cooperads (the category of dg Hopf cooperads for short). We prove that our simplicial enrichment satisfies, in part, the axioms of a simplicial model category structure on the category of dg Hopf cooperads. We use this simplicial model structure to define a model of mapping spaces in the category of dg Hopf cooperads and to upgrade results of the literature about the homotopy automorphism spaces of dg Hopf cooperads by dealing with simplicial monoid structures. The rational homotopy theory of operads implies that the…
We study $p$-localizations, where $p$ is an odd prime, of the full subcategories $S^n$ of stable homotopy category consisting of CW-complexes having cells in $n$ successive dimensions. Using the technique of triangulated categories and matrix problems we classify atoms (indecomposable objects) in $S_p^n$ for $n\le 4(p-1)$ and show that for $n>4(p-1)$ such classification is wild in the sense of the representation theory.
We propose a simplified definition of Quillen's fibration sequences in a pointed model category that fully captures the theory, although it is completely independent of the concept of action. This advantage arises from the understanding that the homotopy theory of the model category's arrow category contains all homotopical information about its long fibration sequences.
For any finite group G, we show that the 2-local G-equivariant stable homotopy category, indexed on a complete G-universe, has a unique equivariant model in the sense of Quillen model categories. This means that the suspension functor, homotopy cofiber sequences and the stable Burnside category determine all "higher order structure" of the 2-local G-equivariant stable homotopy category, such as the equivariant homotopy types of function G-spaces. The theorem can be seen as an equivariant version of Schwede's rigidity theorem at the prime 2.
We show that the classifying space functor $B: Mon \to Top*$ from the category of topological monoids to the category of based spaces is left adjoint to the Moore loop space functor $Ω': Top*\to Mon$ after we have localized $Mon$ with respect to all homomorphisms whose underlying maps are homotopy equivalences and $Top*$ with respect to all based maps which are (not necessarily based) homotopy equivalences. It is well-known that this localization of $Top*$ exists, and we show that the localization of $Mon$ is the category of monoids and homotopy classes of homotopy homomorphisms. To make this …
The classifying space of the embedded cobordism category has been identified in by Galatius, Tillmann, Madsen, and Weiss as the infinite loop space of a certain Thom spectrum. This identifies the set of path components with the classical cobordism group. In this paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the higher homotopy groups as certain cobordism groups where all manifolds are now equipped with a set of orthonormal sections in the tangent bundle. We also give a description of the fundamental group as a free group with a set of geometrically intuitive relations.
We construct models for the motivic homotopy category based on simplicial functors from smooth schemes over a field to simplicial sets. These spaces are homotopy invariant and therefore one does not have to invert the affine line in order to get a model for the motivic homotopy category.
Given a topological group G, its orbit category Orb_G has the transitive G-spaces G/H as objects and the G-equivariant maps between them as morphisms. A well known theorem of Elmendorf then states that the category of G-spaces and the category of contravariant functors Func(Orb_G,Spaces) have equivalent homotopy theories. We extend this result to the context of orbispaces, with the role of Orb_G now played by a category whose objects are topological groups and whose morphisms are given by Hom(H,G) = Mono(H,G) x_G EG. On our way, we endow the category of topological groupoids with notions of we…
Greenlees defined an abelian category A whose derived category is equivalent to the rational S^1-equivariant stable homotopy category whose objects represent rational S^1-equivariant cohomology theories. We show that in fact the model category of differential graded objects in A (dgA) models the whole rational S^1-equivariant stable homotopy theory. That is, we show that there is a Quillen equivalence between dgA and the model category of rational S^1-equivariant spectra, before the quasi-isomorphisms or stable equivalences have been inverted. This implies that all of the higher order structur…
Crossed modules are known to be a model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types; formally, the homotopy category of crossed modules is equivalent to the category of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. In forming the homotopy category of crossed modules, one must resort to computing derived morphisms using non-constructive topological methods, but Behrang Noohi was able to find an algebraic model of these derived morphisms called butterflies. The result is a completely algebraic model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. Reduced crossed complexes are a generalization of crossed modules and mode…
We study the subcategory of topological operads $P$ such that $P(0) = *$ (the category of unitary operads in our terminology). We use that this category inherits a model structure, like the category of all operads in topological spaces, and that the embedding functor of this subcategory of unitary operads into the category of all operads admits a left Quillen adjoint. We prove that the derived functor of this left Quillen adjoint functor induces a left inverse of the derived functor of our category embedding at the homotopy category level. We deduce from this result that the derived mapping sp…
We introduce and compare two approaches to equivariant homotopy theory in a topological or ordinary Quillen model category. For the topological model category of spaces, we generalize Piacenza's result that the categories of topological presheaves indexed by the orbit category of a fixed topological group $G$ and the category of $G$-spaces can be endowed with Quillen equivalent model category structures. We prove an analogous result for any cofibrantly generated model category and discrete group $G$, under certain conditions on the fixed point functors of the subgroups of $G$. These conditions…
In this paper we develop homotopy theoretical methods for studying diagrams. In particular we explain how to construct homotopy colimits and limits in an arbitrary model category. The key concept we introduce is that of a model approximation. Our key result says that if a category admits a model approximation then so does any diagram category with values in this category. From the homotopy theoretical point of view categories with model approximations have similar properties to those of model categories. They admit homotopy categories (localizations with respect to weak equivalences). They als…
In this article, we construct a cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of spaces stratified over a fixed poset, and show that it is Quillen-equivalent to a category of diagrams of simplicial sets. Then, considering all those model structures together, we construct a cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of all stratified spaces. In both model categories, weak-equivalences are characterized by stratified homotopy groups.
Given any model category, or more generally any category with weak equivalences, its simplicial localization is a simplicial category which can rightfully be called the "homotopy theory" of the model category. There is a model category structure on the category of simplicial categories, so taking its simplicial localization yields a "homotopy theory of homotopy theories." In this paper we show that there are two different categories of diagrams of simplicial sets, each equipped with an appropriate definition of weak equivalence, such that the resulting homotopy theories are each equivalent to …
We define a homotopy relation between arrows of a category with weak equivalences, and give a condition under which the quotient by the homotopy relation yields the homotopy category. In the case of the fibrant-cofibrant objects of a model category this condition holds, and we show that our notion of homotopy coincides with the classical one. We also show that Quillen's construction of the homotopy category of a model category, in which the arrows are homotopical classes of a single arrow between fibrant-cofibrant objects, can be made as well for categories with weak equivalences using this no…
We study topological spaces with a distinguished set of paths, called directed paths. Since these directed paths are generally not reversible, the directed homotopy classes of directed paths do not assemble into a groupoid, and there is no direct analog of the fundamental group. However, they do assemble into a category, called the fundamental category. We define models of the fundamental category, such as the fundamental bipartite graph, and minimal extremal models which are shown to generalize the fundamental group. In addition, we prove van Kampen theorems for subcategories, retracts, and m…
A model category is called combinatorial if it is cofibrantly generated and its underlying category is locally presentable. As shown in recent years, homotopy categories of combinatorial model categories share useful properties, such as being well generated and satisfying a very general form of Ohkawa's theorem.
In \cite{CompTheo} we studied the indeterminacy of the value of a derived functor at an object using different definitions of a derived functor and different types of fibrant replacement. In the present work we focus on derived or homotopy limits, which of course depend on the model structure of the diagram category under consideration. The latter is not necessarily unique, which is an additional source of indeterminacy. In the case of homotopy pullbacks, we introduce the concept of full homotopy pullback by identifying the homotopy pullbacks associated with three different model structures of…
We distinguish between faint, weak, strong and strict localizations of categories at morphism families and show that this framework captures the different types of derived functors that are considered in the literature. More precisely, we show that Kan and faint derived functors coincide when we use the classical Kan homotopy category, and when we use the Quillen homotopy category, Kan and strong derived functors coincide. Our comparison results are based on the fact that the Kan homotopy category is a weak localization and that the Quillen homotopy category is a strict localization.
We introduce the homotopy surface category of a space which generalizes the 1+1-dimensional cobordism category of circles and surfaces to the situation where one introduces a background space. We explain how for a simply connected background space, monoidal functors from this category to vector spaces can be interpreted in terms of Frobenius algebras with additional structure.
Let $I$ be a small category with finite dimensional nerve, and $X\colon I\to Cat$ a diagram of small categories. We show that, under a "Reedy quasi-fibrancy condition", the homotopy limit of the geometric realization of $X$ is itself the geometric realization of a category. This categorical model for the homotopy limit is defined explicitly, as a category of natural transformations of diagrams. For the poset $\bullet\to\bullet\leftarrow\bullet$ we recover the model for homotopy pullbacks provided by Quillen's Theorem $B$ (specifically Barwick and Kan's version of Quillen's Theorem $B_2$). For …
Let $R$ be any ring with identity. We show that the homotopy category of all acyclic chain complexes of pure-projective $R$-modules is a compactly generated triangulated category. We do this by constructing abelian model structures that put this homotopy category into a recollement with two other compactly generated triangulated categories: The usual derived category of $R$ and the pure derived category of $R$. This also gives a new model for the derived category.
We construct a cofibrantly generated model structure on the category of flows such that any flow is fibrant and such that two cofibrant flows are homotopy equivalent for this model structure if and only if they are S-homotopy equivalent. This result provides an interpretation of the notion of S-homotopy equivalence in the framework of model categories.
This paper is a generalization of arXiv:0810.0808. We develop the de Rham homotopy theory of not necessarily nilpotent spaces, using closed dg-categories and equivariant dg-algebras. We see these two algebraic objects correspond in a certain way. We prove an equivalence between the homotopy category of schematic homotopy types and a homotopy category of closed dg-categories. We give a description of homotopy invariants of spaces in terms of minimal models. The minimal model in this context behaves much like the Sullivan's minimal model. We also provide some examples. We prove an equivalence be…
For a Hopf DG-algebra corresponding to a derived algebraic group, we compute the homotopy limit of the associated cosimplicial system of DG-algebras given by the classifying space construction. The homotopy limit is taken in the model category of DG-categories. The objects of the resulting DG-category are Maurer-Cartan elements of $\operatorname{Cobar}(A)$, or 1-dimensional $A_\infty$-comodules over $A$. These can be viewed as characters up to homotopy of the corresponding derived group. Their tensor product is interpreted in terms of Kadeishvili's multibraces. We also study the coderived cate…
The finite stable homotopy category S_0 has been suggested as a candidate for a category of perfect complexes over the monoid scheme Spec F_1. We apply a reconstruction theorem from algebraic geometry to S_0, and show that one recovers the one point topological space. We also classify filtering subsets of the set of principal thick subcategories of S_0, and of its p-local versions. This is motivated by a result saying that the analogous classification for the category of perfect complexes over an affine scheme provides topological information.
This paper studies the homotopy theory of algebras and homotopy algebras over an operad. It provides an exhaustive description of their higher homotopical properties using the more general notion of morphisms called infinity-morphisms. The method consists in using the operadic calculus to endow the category of coalgebras over the Koszul dual cooperad or the bar construction with a new type of model category structure, Quillen equivalent to that of algebras. We provide an explicit homotopy equivalence for infinity-morphisms, which gives a simple description of the homotopy category, and we endo…
This paper gives a uniform-theoretic refinement of classical homotopy theory. Both cubical sets (with connections) and uniform spaces admit classes of weak equivalences, special cases of classical weak equivalences, appropriate for the respective Lipschitz and uniform settings. Cubical sets and uniform spaces admit the additional compatible structures of categories of (co)fibrant objects. A categorical equivalence between classical homotopy categories of cubical sets and spaces lifts to a full and faithful embedding from an associated Lipschitz homotopy category of cubical sets into an associa…
Motivated by rational homotopy theory, we study a representable presheaf of groups $\mathbf{\mathfrak{P}}$ on the homotopy category of cocommutative differential graded coalgebras, its Lie algebraic counterpart and its linear representations. We prove a Tannaka type reconstruction theorem that $\mathbf{\mathfrak{P}}$ can be recovered from the dg-category of its linear representations along with the forgetful dg-functor to the underlying dg-category of chain complexes.
We show that the categories PsTop and Lim of pseudotopological spaces and limit spaces, respectively, admit cofibration category structures, and that PsTop admits a model category structure, giving several ways to simultaneously study the homotopy theory of classical topological spaces, combinatorial spaces such as graphs and matroids, and metric spaces endowed with a privileged scale, in addition to spaces of maps between them. In the process, we give a sufficient condition for a topological construct which contains compactly generated Hausdorff spaces as a subcategory to admit an $I$-categor…
We compare Friedlander's definition of the etale topological type for simplicial schemes to another definition involving realizations of pro-simplicial sets. This can be expressed as a notion of hypercover descent for etale homotopy. We use this result to construct a homotopy invariant functor from the category of simplicial presheaves on the etale site of schemes over S to the category of pro-spaces. After completing away from the characteristics of the residue fields of S, we get a functor from the Morel-Voevodsky A^1-homotopy category of schemes to the homotopy category of pro-spaces.
This very speculative sketch suggests that a theory of fundamental groupoids for tensor triangulated categories could be used to describe the ring of integers as the singular fiber in a family of ring-spectra parametrized by a structure space for the stable homotopy category, and that Bousfield localization might be part of a theory of `nearby' cycles for stacks or orbifolds.
This paper is part of a series of papers about homotopy theory of strict $n$-categories. In the first paper of this series, we gave conditions that guarantee the existence of a Thomason model category structure on the category of strict $n$-categories. The main goal of our paper is to show one of these conditions. To do so, we associate to any simplicial complex a strict $\infty$-category generated by a computad. We conjecture that this $\infty$-category has the same homotopy type as the corresponding simplicial complex and we prove this conjecture when the simplicial complex comes from a pose…
We develop a homotopy theory for additive categories endowed with endofunctors, analogous to the concept of a model structure. We use it to construct the homotopy theory of a Hovey triple (which consists of two compatible complete cotorsion pairs) in an arbitrary exact category. We show that the homotopy category of an exact model structure (in the sense of Hovey) in a weakly idempotent complete exact category is equivalent to the subfactor category of cofibrant-fibrant objects as pre-triangulated categories.
We lift Charles Rezk's complete Segal space model structure on the category of simplicial spaces to a Quillen equivalent one on the category of relative categories.
In this paper, we investigate the Quillen model structure defined by Bisson and Tsemo in the category of directed graphs Gph. In particular, we give a precise description of the homotopy category of graphs associated to this model structure. We endow the categories of N-sets and Z-sets with related model structures, and show that their homotopy categories are Quillen equivalent to the homotopy category Ho(Gph). This enables us to show that Ho(Gph) is equivalent to the category cZSet of periodic Z-sets, and to show that two finite directed graphs are almost-isospectral if and only if they are h…
We prove in this paper that for a quasi-compact and semi-separated (non necessarily noetherian) scheme X, the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves over X, D(A_qc(X)), is a stable homotopy category in the sense of Hovey, Palmieri and Strickland, answering a question posed by Strickland. Moreover we show that it is unital and algebraic. We also prove that for a noetherian semi-separated formal scheme X, its derived category of sheaves of modules with quasi-coherent torsion homologies D_qct(X) is a stable homotopy category. It is algebraic but if the formal scheme is not a usual scheme, it …
Let $\mathcal C$ be a $\mathcal V$-enriched model category. We say that an object $x$ of $\mathcal C$ is homotopy tiny if the total right derived functor of $\mathcal C(x, -) : \mathcal{C} \rightarrow {\mathcal V}$ preserves homotopy weighted colimits. Let $\mathcal C_0$ be a full subcategory of $\mathcal C$ all of whose objects are homotopy tiny. Our main result says that the homotopy category of the category generated by $\mathcal C_0$ under weak equivalences and homotopy weighted colimits is equivalent to the homotopy category of the category $\mathcal V^{\mathcal C_0^{op}}$ of $\mathcal V$…
In this article we build a Quillen model category structure on the category of sequentially complete l.m.c.-C*-algebras such that the corresponding homotopy classes of maps Ho(A,B) for separable C*-algebras A and B coincide with the Kasparov groups KK(A,B). This answers an open question posed by Mark Hovey about the possibility of describing KK-theory for C*-algebras using the language of Quillen model categories.
