We construct models for the motivic homotopy category based on simplicial functors from smooth schemes over a field to simplicial sets. These spaces are homotopy invariant and therefore one does not have to invert the affine line in order to get a model for the motivic homotopy category.
A rigidity property for the homotopy invariant stable linear framed presheaves is established. As a consequence a variant of Gabber rigidity theorem is obtained for a cohomology theory representable in the motivic stable homotopy category by a $ϕ$-torsion spectrum with $ϕ\in\mathrm{GW}(k)$ of rank coprime to the (exponential) characteristic of the base field $k$. It is shown that the values of such cohomology theories at an essentially smooth Henselian ring and its residue field coincide. The result is applicable to cohomology theories representable by $n$-torsion spectra as well as to the one…
Given a small simplicial category $\C$ whose underlying ordinary category is equipped with a Grothendieck topology $τ$, we construct a model structure on the category of simplicially enriched presheaves on $\C$ where the weak equivalences are the local weak equivalences of the underlying (non-enriched) simplicial presheaves. We show that this model category is a $t$-complete model topos and describe the Grothendieck topology $[τ]$ on the homotopy category of $\C$ that corresponds to this model topos. After we first review a proof showing that the motivic homotopy theory is not a model topos, w…
There are two approaches to the homotopy theory of simplicial (pre-)sheaves. One developed by Joyal and Jardine works for all sites but produces a model structure which is not finitely generated even in the case of sheaves on a Noetherian topological space. The other one developed by Brown and Gersten gives a nice model structure for sheaves on a Noetherian space of finite dimension but does not extend to all sites. In this paper we define a class of sites for which a generalized version of the Brown-Gersten approach works.
The usual notion of a site fibred over a stack is expanded to a definition of a site C/A fibred over a presheaf of categories A. Presheaves of simplicial sets on the site fibred over a presheaf of categories A are contravariant enriched diagrams defined on A, taking values in simplicial sets. The standard model structure for presheaves of simplicial sets induces a coarse equivariant structure for enriched contravariant A-diagrams. If the presheaf of categories is a presheaf of groupoids G, then the associated homotopy theory is Quillen equivalent to the homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves…
Let $F$ and $k$ be perfect fields. The main goal of this paper is to investigate algebraic models for the Morel-Voevodsky unstable motivic homotopy category $\mathrm{Ho}(F)$ after $\mathbf{H}^{\mathbb{A}^1}k$ localization. More specifically, we extend results of Goerss to the $\mathbb{A}^1$-algebraic topology setting: we study the homotopy theory of the category $s\mathrm{coCAlg}_k(Sm_F)$ of presheaves of simplicial coalgebras over a field $k$ and their $τ$ and $\mathbb{A}^1$-localizations. For $k$ algebraically closed, we show that the unit of the adjunction $k^δ[-]\dashv(-)^{gp}$ determines …
We introduce the notion of a relative limit simplicial partial motivic site and a corresponding notion of motivic measurability which specializes to the notion of finite schemic motivic measures of H. Schoutens and the notion of infinite schemic motivic measures of the author. The advantage to working with simplicial motivic sites is that it gives the correct notion of the motivic measure of a derived stacks which have some reasonable finiteness conditions. This work was partially supported by the Chateaubriand Fellowship.
In this paper we define the triangulated category of motives over a simplicial scheme. The morphisms between the Tate objects in this category compute the motivic cohomology of the underlying scheme. In the last section we consider the special case of "embedded" simplicial schemes, which correspond to the subsheaves of the constant sheaf and naturally appear in the descent problems for motivic cohomology such as the Bloch-Kato conjecture.
An n-truncated model structure on simplicial (pre-)sheaves is described having as weak equivalences maps that induce isomorphisms on certain homotopy sheaves only up to degree n. Starting from one of Jardine's intermediate model structures we construct such an n-type model structure via Bousfield-Friedlander localization and exhibit useful generating sets of trivial cofibrations. Injectively fibrant objects in these categories are called n-hyperstacks. The whole setup can consequently be viewed as a description of the homotopy theory of higher hyperstacks. More importantly, we construct analog…
We develop further the theory of integrable functions within the theory of relative simplicial motivic measures. We provide a primitive change of variables formula for this theory.
For an $\A^1$-connected pointed simplicial sheaf $\sX$ over a perfect field $k$, we prove that the Hurewicz map $π_1^{\A^1}(\sX) \to H_1^{\A^1}(\sX)$ is surjective. We also observe that the Hurewicz map for $¶^1_k$ is the abelianisation map. In the course of proving this result, we also show that for any morphism $ϕ$ of strongly $\A^1$-invariant sheaves of groups, the image and kernel of $ϕ$ are also strongly $\A^1$-invariant.
We combine several mini miracles to achieve an elementary understanding of infinite loop spaces and very effective spectra in the algebro-geometric setting of motivic homotopy theory. Our approach combines $Γ$-spaces and framed correspondences into the concept of framed motivic $Γ$-spaces; these are continuous or enriched functors of two variables that take values in motivic spaces and are equipped with a framing. We craft proofs of our main results by imposing further axioms on framed motivic $Γ$-spaces such as a Segal condition for simplicial Nisnevich sheaves, cancellation, ${\mathbb A}^{1}…
These lecture notes cover four topics. There is a proof of the fact that the functors represented by the motivic Eilenberg-Maclane spaces on the motivic homotopy category coincide with the motivic cohomology defined in terms of the motivic complexes. There is a description of the equivariant motivic homotopy category for a finite flat group scheme (over a noetherian base) together with a new characterization of A^1-equivalences. There is a part where we introduce a class of sheaves called solid sheaves. Finally there is a part where we study functors of the form X -> X/G and X -> X^W and show …
We formalize an abstraction of Grothendieck's philosophy of motives and construct a category of derived motivic spectra in the Segal category $\mathbb{R} \underline{\text{Hom}} ((\text{dSt}_k)^{\text{op}}_{/F}, \text{Top})$ ($\text{dSt}_k$ the Segal category of derived stacks on s$k$-Alg, Top = $L \text{Set}_Δ$ the Segal category of simplicial sets), thereby providing a starting point for a construction of a stable motivic homotopy category in the Segal setting.
In this short note we show that the homotopy category of smooth compactifications of smooth algebraic varieties is equivalent to the homotopy category of smooth varieties over a field of characteristic zero. As an application we show that the functor sending a variety to the p-th step of the Hodge filtration of its complex cohomology is representable in the homotopy category of simplicial presheaves on smooth complex varieties. The main motivation are recent applications of homotopy theory to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology theories.
The motivic homotopy categories can be defined with respect to different topologies and different underlying categories of schemes. For a number of reasons (mainly because of the Gluing Theorem) the motivic homotopy category built out of smooth schemes with respect to the Nisnevich topology plays a distinguished role but in some cases it is very desirable to be able to work with all schemes instead of the smooth ones. In this paper we prove that, under the resolution of singularities assumption, the unstable motivic homotopy category of all schemes over a field with respect to the cdh-topology…
Beginning with the conjecture of Artin and Tate in 1966, there has been a series of successively more general conjectures expressing the special values of the zeta function of an algebraic variety over a finite field in terms of other invariants of the variety. In this article, we present the ultimate such conjecture, and provide evidence for it. In particular, we enhance Voevodsky's Z[1/p]-category of etale motivic complexes with a p-integral structure, and show that, for this category, our conjecture follows from the Tate and Beilinson conjectures. As the conjecture is stated in terms of mot…
Let X be a Noetherian scheme of finite dimension and denote by rho the (additive inverse of the) morphism in SH(X) from S to Gm corresponding to the unit -1. Here SH(X) denotes the motivic stable homotopy category. We show that the category obtained by inverting rho in SH(X) is canonically equivalent to the (simplicial) local stable homotopy category of the site X_ret, by which we mean the small real etale site of X, comprised of etale schemes over X with the real etale topology. One immediate application is that SH(RR)[rho^-1] is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. In partic…
We study a version of the James model for the loop space of a suspension in unstable ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. We use this model to establish an analog of G.W. Whitehead's classical refinement of the Freudenthal suspension theorem in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory: our result refines F. Morel's ${\mathbb A}^1$-simplicial suspension theorem. We then describe some $E_1$-differentials in the EHP sequence in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. These results are analogous to classical results of G.W. Whitehead's. Using these tools, we deduce some new results about unstable ${\mathbb A}^1$-homo…
The category of finite Milnor-Witt correspondences, introduced by Calmès and Fasel, provides a new type of correspondences closer to the motivic homotopy theoretic framework than Suslin-Voevodsky's correspondences. A fundamental result of the theory of ordinary correspondences concerns homotopy invariance of sheaves with transfers, and in the present paper we address this question in the setting of Milnor-Witt correspondences. Employing techniques due to Druzhinin, Fasel-Østvær and Garkusha-Panin, we show that homotopy invariance of presheaves with Milnor-Witt transfers is preserved under Nisn…
This paper gives an introduction to homotopy descent, and its applications in algebraic $K$-theory computations for fields. On the étale site of a field, a fibrant model of a simplicial presheaf can be constructed from naive Galois cohomological objects given by homotopy fixed point constructions, but only up to pro-equivalence. The homotopy fixed point spaces define finite Galois descent for simplicial presheaves (and their relatives) over a field, but a pro-categorical construction is a necessary second step for passage from finite descent conditions to full homotopy descent in a Galois coho…
V. Voevodsyky laid the groundwork of delooping motivic spaces in order to provide a new, more computation-friendly, construction of the stable motivic category $SH(k)$, G. Garkusha and I. Panin made that project a reality, while collaborating with A. Ananievsky, A. Neshitov and A. Druzhinin. In particular, G. Garkusha and I. Panin proved that for an infinite perfect field $k$ and any $k$-smooth scheme $X$ the canonical morphism of motivic spaces $C_*Fr(X)\to Ω^{\infty}_{\mathbb{P}^1} Σ^{\infty}_{\mathbb{P}^1} (X_+)$ is Nisnevich-locally a group-completion. In the present work, a generalisation…
For a subring $R$ of the rational numbers, we study $R$-localization functors in the local homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves on a small site and then in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. To this end, we introduce and analyze two notions of nilpotence for spaces in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory paying attention to future applications for vector bundles. We show that $R$-localization behaves in a controlled fashion for the nilpotent spaces we consider. We show that the classifying space $BGL_n$ is ${\mathbb A}^1$-nilpotent when $n$ is odd, and analyze the (more complicated) situation whe…
Morel's stable connectivity theorems state that for any connective $S^1$-spectrum $F$ of motivic spaces (Nisnevich simplicial sheaves) over an arbitrary field, the spectrum $L_{\mathbb A^1}(F)$ is connective, and the same property for $\mathbb P^1$-spectra of motivic spaces. Here $L_{\mathbb A^1}$ denotes the $\mathbb A^1$-localisation in the category of motivic spectra over a field $k$. Originally the same property was conjectured for the case of motivic $S^1$-spectra over a base scheme $S$.In view of Ayoub's conterexamples the modified version of conjecture states that $L_{\mathbb A^1}(F)$ i…
The strictly homotopy invariance of the associated Nisnevish sheave $\widetilde{\mathcal F}_{Nis}$ of a homotopy invariant presheave $\mathcal F$ with GW-transfers (or Witt-transfers) on the category of smooth varieties over a prefect field $k$, $char\,k \neq 2$, is proved, i.e. the isomorphism $$H^i_{Nis}(\mathbb A^1\times X,\widetilde{\mathcal F}_{Nis})\simeq H^i_{Nis}(X,\widetilde{\mathcal F}_{Nis})$$ for any $X\in Sm_k$ is obtained. This theorem is necessary for the construction of the triangulated category of GW-motives $\mathbf{DM}^{GW}(k)$ and Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^W(k)$ by the Voev…
Simplicial presheaves on cartesian spaces provide a general notion of smooth spaces. There is a corresponding smooth version of the singular complex functor, which maps smooth spaces to simplicial sets. We consider the localisation of the (projective or injective) model category of smooth spaces at the morphisms which become weak equivalences under the singular complex functor. We prove that this localisation agrees with a motivic-style $\mathbb{R}$-localisation of the model category of smooth spaces. Further, we exhibit the singular complex functor for smooth spaces as one of several Quillen …
Let $Z\to X$ be a closed immersion of smooth affine schemes over an arbitrary field $k$, and $X^h_Z$ denote the henselization of $X$ along $Z$. For each presheaf $E\colon \mathbf{SH}(k)\to \mathrm{Ab}^\mathrm{op}$ on the stable motivic homotopy category over $k$ and the induced continuous presheaf $E\colon \mathrm{EssSm}_k\to \mathrm{Ab}^\mathrm{op}$ on the category of essentially smooth schemes there is a homomorphism \[E(X^h_Z)\to E(Z).\] We prove that this is an isomorphism for any $l_\varepsilon$-torsion presheaf $E$, for $l\in \mathbb Z$, $(l,\mathrm{chark}\,k)=1$, and $l_\varepsilon=\sum…
We continue the work initiated in arXiv:1206.3645, where we introduced a new stable symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-category $SH_{nc}$ encoding a motivic stable homotopy theory for the noncommutative spaces of Kontsevich and obtained a canonical monoidal colimit-preserving functor $SH\to SH_{nc}$ relating this new theory to the $(\infty,1)$-category encoding the stable motivic $\mathbb{A}^1$ theory of Morel-Voevodsky. For a scheme $X$ this map recovers the dg-derived category of perfect complexes $L_{pe}(X)$. In this sequel we address the study of the different flavours of algebraic $K$-theory…
We define Albanese and Picard 1-motives of smooth (simplicial) schemes over a perfect field. For smooth proper schemes, these are the classical Albanese and Picard varieties. For a curve, these are t he homological 1-motive of Lichtenbaum and the motivic $H^1$ of Deligne. This paper proves a conjecture of Deligne about providing an algebraic description, via 1-motives, of the first homology and cohomology groups of a complex algebraic variety. (L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas have also proved this independently.) It also contains a purely algebraic proof of Lichtenbaum's conjecture that the …
